THE VALUE OF EDUCATION What greater or better gift can we offer the republic than
to teach and instruct our youth? —Cicero
What is the RCIA?
RCIA, which stands for Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, is the process through which men and women enter the Catholic
Church. It includes several stages marked by study, prayer and rites at Mass. The first stage is
a period of Inquiry which is an unstructured time of no fixed duration for questions
and an opportunity for the beginnings of Christian faith to form.
These informal meetings will be held in room 12 after the 9:30 liturgy beginning September 8 and all are welcome. For more
information, please contact Ray Nolte at [email protected] or Lori Muniz in the
Catechetical office at [email protected] or 909.981.7080.

Jesus tells the crowd that only those who renounce all of their
possessions can be His disciples. Is He truly asking us to give up everything? Perhaps instead He is trying to help us see that eve-rything we think we own is really a gift from God. Good stew-
ards know that and strive to use those gifts accountably.

MINISTRY COUNCIL MEETING
.CHANGE OF HEART
Today’s Gospel reading is difficult for some people to
understand. We can accept that we must carry the cross and
follow Jesus, but why does he say that
we must hate our parents, spouses, children, and even life itself to be his disciple? Hate is such a powerful
word with many emotional overtones. Perhaps the author of the Gospel used another word and “hate” is just a mistranslation? But no: the word in the original Greek is miseo and it does mean hate. Most scripture
scholars believe that Jesus was deliberately exaggerating to make his point hit home. Human
beings often cling to relationships and possessions, and these come to occupy the primary place in their
hearts—the place where God is meant to be. Where God is displaced in the believer’s heart, true
discipleship is almost impossible. Think of these examples: the woman who focuses all her attention on
her children and ignores her husband; the man who spends every evening and weekend drinking; the
young couple who are so in love that they notice no one except each other; the person who hoards things to
compensate for the loss or lack of relationships. All these are temporary displacements, but if they harden into habit they can keep people from a life with God.
Attending Mass regularly, saying frequent prayers, and keeping all the commandments are excellent habits, but they do not bring us closer to God unless our hearts are changed and God takes first place there. Such a change
is true conversion, allowing us to become Jesus’ disciples. As disciples, we carry a cross—sometimes a
dramatic process but more often a deliberate day-to-day effort to reorder our priorities and the way we live. Jesus first, others next, yourself last is a life
that spells J-O-Y. Copyright © 2009, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.

Jesús enseña a
Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

How does our parish attract inquirers each year who consider becoming Catholic?
The short answer is you! When any parish has many inquirers year after year, it is the fruit of the Holy
Spirit as parish members open their hearts to welcome others. Members of a welcoming and
evangelizing community take seriously their call to share the message to “Go out into the whole world
and proclaim the Gospel to every creature.” (Mark 16:15) It happens in parish families, in the
workplace, in gatherings with friends and neighbors, and in daily contacts.

6:30-8:30 every other week. Boldly go where many have gone before & help
pass on the Good News of Jesus Christ and our Catholic faith.
Some Good Reasons to be a Catechist #1: It’s what we are called to do Jesus said, “Go, therefore, and make
disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age” (Mt 28:19-20). By teaching the next generation about the good News, you are fulfilling your part of the Great Commandment. It may be the most important thing you will ever do.
#2: It’s fun! Kids remind adults to live and laugh in
the moment and get enthused about things like holy days and stories of saints. Not to mention there’s nothing like it when a kid “gets” one of the tenets of the faith, like the Real presence of Christ.
#3: You show your own family that you value religious education Taking time out of your life to teach the
faith shows your own children, Grandchildren, siblings and family members that you put a high priority on religious education. You may find you are teaching them as much by your example to your students as you are by your lesson plans.
#4: You will be practicing stewardship Families are struggling with rising prices
and shrinking incomes. Being a catechist is a way of being a good steward by giving a bit of your precious resource – your time! You might not be able to donate as much money as you would like, but we all have time and talent to share.
