READINGS FOR THE WEEK

LIVING the

WORD

LIVING the

WORD

THIS WEEK’S FOCUS: SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW

Attempting to understand the life beyond this life can be a challenge. We know that somehow we will still live, but in a completely new way. The Risen Christ shows us the way.

FIRST READING The King of the world will raise us up to live again forever (2 Maccabees 7:1-2, 9-14). This is the account of a mother and seven sons who were arrested during a persecution of Jews. The emperor of Syria, Antiochus Epiphanies, wanted to unify his extensive empire by ordering all peoples to give up their local religious practices and to adopt the Greek way of life. Many people did this, but the Jewish people rebelled against such tyranny. The Maccabees were a family that led the rebellion. There were many martyrs. People who circumcised their babies or who refused to eat pork were put to death. This account is significant that they speak of the fact that God would reward them for their fidelity. SECOND READING May the Lord encourage and strengthen your hearts (2 Thessalonians 2:16 — 3:5). The word of God had been preached to the Thessalonian community, and they knew what was right and just. Now they had to live it. The author asks for prayers so that the word of the Lord might be accepted as readily to others as it was by the Thessalonians. It is God who was behind this success. Yet, there are some who could not accept that word. Sometimes it is a question of sinful rejection; at other times it might be that they have not yet received the gift of faith. God calls each of us in God’s own time.

The author returns to the theme of endurance. Very few of us will be called to give witness to the faith as martyrs, but each of us is called to give an everyday witness in the ordinary, common events of life. GOSPEL Those who are deemed worthy of the coming age can no longer die (Luke 20:27-38 [27, 34-38]). The Sadducees did not accept the Resurrection from the dead (as the Pharisees did). Therefore, they tried to trap Jesus by bringing up a case of a woman who had seven husbands. When a man died without an heir, the widow was to marry the next of kin. This woman married seven brothers in a row. They asked Jesus whose wife would she be in the resurrection. One problem with this question was that they were asking who owned her in heaven. We do not belong to one another in heaven. The love of heaven is not exclusive (saying we can love only one and not another). It is a love for all without limit. Toward the end, Jesus uses a rabbinic, scriptural argument to challenge the Sadducees’ rejection of the resurrection from the dead. REFLECTION A classroom teacher knows a student’s question reveals either they understand a concept or missed the point. When the Sadducees ask Jesus about whose wife the bride of seven brothers will be at the resurrection, it is clear that they miss the point. Resurrected life is a new reality in which people “can no longer die, for they are like angels.” The encounters between Jesus and the disciples following His Resurrection reveal how long it took for His disciples to understand this. They did not have an experience that helped them wrap their minds around the concept. Neither did we until Jesus’ Resurrection and it is still difficult to grasp. Something of us is the same but something of us is also very different. Any change requires that an element of a reality continue while other elements are different. However we understand the Resurrection, one thing is sure, we will live in a new way. The Lord is faithful to us throughout this life and into the next and gives us the strength to be faithful at all times. It is faith that carries us through death to new life. The seven brothers and their mother exemplify how faith in God helps us face even death. Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection is another example. So are martyrs like Archbishop Oscar Romero, Franz van der Lugt, SJ, Dorothy Stang, CND and our sisters and brothers dying for their faith today. Children of God follow the instruction: “May the Lord direct your hearts to the love of God and to the endurance of Christ.” You too will find strength to be counted.

MASS INTENTIONS FOR THE WEEK POLICY ON MASS INTENTIONS

Church Law, Canon 948 states that “separate Masses are to be applied for the intentions for which an individual offering has been made and accepted. The priest who accepts such offerings is bound in justice to satisfy the obligations personally or by committing them to another (Cc. 989, 954-55).” In 1991, the Congregations of the Clergy issued a decree in which permission was given to accept several offerings for a collective intention at a single Mass. The following regulations must be observed :

1) The donors must be informed of and consent to the combining of their offerings before the Mass at which the collective intention is. 2) The time and place for the Mass must be announced. 3) The practice may not be observed more than

twice a week. 4) The offerings are to be placed in the general funds of the parish.

These collective intentions will be held at St. Anthony Parish on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the year, provided the day does not fall on a Church Feast or Holiday, such as Christmas.

No more than five intentions can be celebrated at each of these two Masses. These intentions will be scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. All other Masses will be offered for a single intention only, in accord with Church Law.

If you would like to have your Mass intention offered sooner than the parish can accommodate, Mass intentions can be sent to the Joliet Chancery Office where they will be sent to retired priests, who will offer them at their convenience. Only one Mass intention a day can be accepted by any priest.

If you need any clarification of this policy, please see the Pastor at your convenience.

Due to a low Mass attendance on Sunday, it was decided that before adding an additional Mass after Labor Day, we would monitor the attendance and need for the month of September. The 6:30 pm Mass attendance has increased and other Masses still have empty spaces, even after the return of Religious Education families from their summer vacation. For this reason we have decided not to add another Mass at this time. We will continue to watch the attendance, and if the need arises we can change the schedule at a later date.

Once the side aisles are finished, ministers will come to the back of church. When you see the ministers approach please raise your hand. Thank you for your patience in this transition. In today’s Gospel we find that God is a God of the living, and this is indeed the core of our hope. Jesus has risen and is with us, therefore, at no time should we be without hope for the future. When you give food or cash donations for the Food Pantry next week you give hope to your neighbors who struggle to make ends meet.

Weekly Gospel/Homily Reflections…

T he Sadducees were a group within Judaism in Jesus' time. As the

Gospel tells us, they did not believe in resurrection. Other groups within Judaism in Jesus' time did believe in resurrection. Some Sadducees tested Jesus with a question about what happens after a person dies; their question had to do with marriage. Jesus' answer suggests that life after death will be different from our life on earth. Jesus' response to the Sadducees shows that we sometimes miss the most important things about what God has planned for us because we get stuck in the details of human existence. Jesus wants us to open our minds and hearts to the possibilities that God has in store for us. Our imaginations are too small when it comes to God! There are many things that we do not know about our life after we die, but the most important thing we do know. Our faith tells us that when we die our life is changed, but it is not ended. This is good news because we know that we will continue to share a relationship with God even after our death.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK

For Children: Death is a hard reality in our human life, but if we believe in the resurrection, we know it isn’t the end of the journey. How does your belief in heaven affect the way you live?

For Adults: Having faith in difficult times is hard! What makes you believe in the promise that God will be your strength, as Paul says?

To re-read the Gospel to assist with your weekly reflection, go to: www.usccb.org/bible/readings. Click to the right of the calendar for the week’s readings and scroll to “Gospel”.

CATECHIST CORNER What Changed in the World

as a Result of the Resurrection? Because death is now no longer the end of everything, joy and hope came into the world. Now that death "no longer has dominion" (Rom 6:9) over Jesus, it has no more power over us, either, who belong to Jesus. [655, 658] (YOUCAT question 108)

FOSTER GRANDPARENT VOLUNTEERS Catholic Charities Diocese of Joliet Foster Grandparent Program offers 55-older adults an opportunity to help children in your community develop academic and life skills that are critical to their development and future successes. Sharing 20 hours a week of your time and experience can help children learn how to read, prepare younger students for school readiness, tackle tough subjects and make decisions that will keep them on the right path. We'll match your skills and passions to opportunities that interest you, including those in elementary schools in Districts 86 and 89, faith-based schools, Head Start sites, and preschools. If you are income-eligible you will receive a tax-free hourly stipend. No formal experience in tutoring and mentoring needed. Orientation/training provided. Contact Mari at 815-724-1134 or [email protected] to learn about volunteering.

Mission Statement We, the members of St. Anthony Catholic Church, gather together to worship and celebrate the sacraments, especially the Eucharist, as we strive to live the Gospel in our daily lives. Empowered by the Holy Spirit, we are called to invite, inform, inspire and ignite the community in our faith journey by fostering stewardship through sharing of our gifts of time, talent and treasure. We are further called to share our faith through active evangelization and charitable outreach.
