Dear Friends and Neighbors, This column is about the past, the present and the future. Let me start with the past. As I wrote to you in June, our manager of 12 years, Craig Martin, will be retiring on October 31. There is not enough room in this column to list his accomplishments so I will go to his incredibly simple approach to management. It was to make St. Andrews “The Best of the Best.” Sounds corny, but he convinced the staff that anything less would be failure. He kept some senior managers, hired others and most importantly promoted others. He taught them that the definition of success is member service-- and they had to pass it down to their staff. The Best of the Best? Not so corny! And then came Dorian. Well we thought it was coming. Thank G-d it didn’t. But while Dorian didn’t come our staff did. Member service became personal and our well-being was personal to the staff, and what started as the Best of the Best ended up as Family. So, thank you Craig —Thank you for hiring the right people. Thank you for teaching them. Thank you for making us a Family. And to all of our members please join the Board on Thursday night October 17 (5-7 PM) for Craig’s Farewell Cocktail Party in the St. Andrews Room where we will celebrate his 12 years making us the Best of the Best. There are many more dates to put on your calendar. Whether you are a golfer, tennis player, bridge player, gym rat, enjoy our social or cultural events or the services in our spa & salon, or it is the swimming pool or dining rooms that you enjoy most, there are events in the next eight months you won’t want to miss. You should have received hard copy of our 2019/2020 Social Calendar. If you misplaced it or it went to the wrong address tell us where you would like a new copy sent or check our website. We have tried to bring transparency to a new level with communication to the membership a week or so after each Board Meeting and whenever something meaningful happens. The ultimate in transparency will be our first Semi Annual Meeting scheduled for Sunday afternoon November 24. The meeting will start at 3 PM and I have no idea when it will end. All of the Board Members will be there with their department head partners and they will discuss their plans for the upcoming season and then we will open up the floor for questions. If you send questions before the meeting we will try and have answers built into the presentations, or give them some priority when we get to Q & A.The Board has put the future in the very capable hands of our Assistant General Manager Rick Dente. I have had a chance to work extensively with Rick over the last few months and he has shown himself to possess the four keys to successful management. He Listens, Thinks makes sure he has all relevant Information and then Decides. It sounds simple, but anyone who has run a company knows it is only a few that possess the ability to do all four in the right balance. The Staff is behind him, The Board is behind him and the Membership is behind him. He will keep St. Andrews the Best of the Best.On a personal note I am proud that I live in a community that in the past, present and future can only be described as the most philanthropic community anywhere. The immediate response to help the Bahamas and the ongoing support of a myriad of different charities defines what St. Andrews is. See you all on November 9 at the opening social, at the opening golf event and, and, and………………Sincerely,

Ron GallatinPresident, Board of Governors

INSIDE StyleSeptember/October 2019

Dear Members:

This is my last Style article before departing November 1. I am genuinely appreciative and blessed for the opportunity to work at St. Andrews County Club for the past 12 years. Your concern and care of me, and my family, as well as to our family of employees, is remarkable and unique. We Thank You for the respect and appreciation you give back to us each day.

My gratitude goes to the dedicated 340 professionals who have supported our goals and fulfilled the vision while ensuring we deliver exceptional service, product and facilities for you. We have a special team who come to work each day with the spirit of achieving our mission and purpose. We all work hard each day to exceed your expectations and make certain you have the best club experience that can be found in the private club industry.

I am forever grateful to work with so many dedicated Board Members and Committee Members who have stepped up to volunteer and collaborate with management to establish such high standards and programs for the enjoyment of the membership. Each Club President from Elliot Brody, Roy Schwedelson, Mike Goldman, Ed Rice, Steve Irwin and Ron Gallatin have been supportive, made me feel important and allowed me to do my job as your General Manager & COO.

I am excited to announce some key awards recognizing several of our managers. Please join me in congratulating these fine professionals on their achievements.

Paul Clivio was honored and received the prestigious 2019 Bill Strausbaugh Award from the South Florida PGA Section as the best professional distinguishing themselves by mentoring their fellow PGA Professionals in improving their employment situations and through service to the community.

Dawn MacLellan was elected to serve on the Board of Directors of the International Spa Association which is recognized worldwide as the leading professional organization and voice of the spa industry. Dawn will have the honor and opportunity to advance the spa industry through education initiatives, promote the value of the spa experience and speak as the authoritative voice to foster professionalism and growth.

Julio Fuentes, Recreation & Aquatics Manager for the Club was just awarded the 2019 Best of Boca Raton Award for best swimming instructor. The 2019 Boca Raton Award Program focuses on quality, not quantity. Winners are determined based on the information gathered both internally by the Boca Raton Award Program and data provided by third parties.

I wish Rick Dente much continued success in his new role as your General Manager. After hiring Rick three years ago, it was my goal to have him succeed to step into my shoes when the time was right for me to depart. I feel confident of his abilities and personality to elevate St. Andrews Country Club to new heights of success.

All the best in health and happiness,

Craig D. Martin, C.C.M.

Hurricane season is in full swing and we experienced our first real test of the summer. We are very fortunate to have escaped Dorian’s path and we want to thank all of our members and employees for their patience, support and understanding as we went through the Club closure process. Hopefully this was our first and only scare of the season.

As November 1 approaches I want to personally wish Craig Martin, our COO/GM all the best with his retirement from St. Andrews Country Club after leading the charge for an incredible 12 years at the helm. As his journey continues on a new path, we wish him all the best for his future endeavors. Thank you for all that you have done during your time at St. Andrews.

I want to welcome our new Director of Catering, Jennifer Capuano to the St. Andrews team. Jennifer joins us from the Polo Club of Boca Raton where she was the Catering Director for eight years and had previously

worked in their Food and Beverage operation as well. We are very excited about Jennifer’s addition to our catering team and we wish her all the best for a successful tenure at St. Andrews.

Be sure to join us for the upcoming holidays, Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur in September and October. We look forward to hosting our members and their families during this special time. Keep a look out for our upcoming Halloween Social which always promises to be a spooky good time! Always a family favorite, be sure not to miss out on the Kids Halloween Trick or Treat Caravan event followed by the Kids Halloween party.

With the many upcoming events and activities, I look forward to seeing our members and their families enjoying all that St. Andrews has to offer.

See you around Club.

Happy Hour is at The Pub from 3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.; Cafe Blue is open on Saturday and Sunday from 11:30am to 2:00pm daily and The Turn will resume its regular hours of operation 10:00am to 4:00pm mid October. The Halloween festivity is fast approaching, and I would like to encourage everyone to make their reservations. Reagan Govender, Food and Beverage Director, has traveled to South Africa this summer to recruit our international staff. During the fall, Reagan will be focusing in elevating our training program and on boarding process for all our Food and Beverage international staff. Our new international staff are arriving and undergoing training; we are seeing their performance accelerate along with our expected learning curve. It typically takes around three to four weeks for their skill level to catch up; our returners group are doing a fine job of helping their peers adjust to the high expectations of St. Andrews standards. We teach our international employees through assessments, quizzes, and manuals to enable effective learning, yet they enjoy creative flexibility through robust set of built-in and role-paly interactive elements. We allow the newly hired employees some latitude in setting the pace of learning new tasks, particularly as the training is provided by numerous employees who must perform their duties as well as train the new hire. In a busy, hectic environment, this is a huge challenge for all to overcome. As we measure their progress, the process builds the newly hired employee’s confidence through affirmation of their accomplishments. See you around Club.

Welcome SAWGA to a new season at St. Andrews and to many new rules of golf! I hope your summer adventures were interesting and full of good golf and fast carts… As we get ready to start the 2019-2020 season, there are many events (and dates) already being planned for you to add to your calendar.

Firstly, congratulations to ALL the ladies who participated in the South Palm Beach League. It is a great way to meet new players and play other courses, and our team was usually on the leaderboard! Additional congrats to all who continued to enjoy the Tuesday Tournaments through the heat and humidity of the summer months – we will see you soon.

With the High Holidays in our near future, the Tuesday Tournament will be played as a Scramble on the second day of Rosh Hashanah, and for those who want to play before Yom Kippur, thre will be an individual tournament. Sign up for any or all.

Our Fall Golf Tournament & Luncheon will be hosted this year by Kerri Benson and Harriet Levine and is open to all members of the St. Andrews Women’s Golf Association, so please register and sign up for it in the Golf Shop. The theme is “Welcome Back to Camp,” shot-gun start begins at 8:45 a.m. with a Sit Out Scramble, pairings to be done by the Pros, followed by lunch. Colors of the day are your favorite camp colors.

The first major golf tournament is the Governors Cup – Tuesday, December 10 is round one, Thursday, December 12 round two, and the final round is December 17 with December 19 as a raindate. It is a partner format and that partnership can only be for two consecutive yeears. It is match play. Stroked off low handicap in group, with only six stroke difference in partners.

Some reminders to get our season off to a great start: Dress Code – tennis and work out clothes are not allowed on the range or course – spandex tops are not suitable for golf; and Handicaps – please submit all scores or scorecards to pros to be entered into computer, or put them in yourself. Your handicap must represent your present round of golf. Sally Rowley-Williams can also assist with handicaps and GHIN numbers.

We have a weekly eblast that goes out to all SAWGA members that keeps us current on tournaments, events, rules, etc. Make sure your devices don’t send this information to spam or junk mail.

We look forward to seeing everyone in the staging area, ready to have fun and hit that ball.

With the stifling, hot and humid Florida summer heat almost behind us, we are all anxiously awaiting cooler temps and of course the return all of our members from the northern region. I hope you all have had an enjoyable summer and are excited for the upcoming season. The tennis calendar is basically complete and it’s filled with lots of variety and some terrific events for your enjoyment. One recently scheduled event, our annual Labor Day Round Robin, unfortunately was canceled due to Hurricane Dorian. We were obviously very lucky to dodge the storms path and with that said, send our well wishes and prayers to everyone who was affected by Dorian.

Our Ladies’ and Men’s league teams begin play in September and we are thrilled to have eight total tennis teams representing St. Andrews Country Club. Best of luck to everyone participating and thanks, as always, for your commitment and support of our St. Andrews Tennis Program.

Some awesome upcoming events you definitely won’t want to miss are the following: Twilight Mixer (Monday, October 14), Complimentary Clinic (Saturday, October 19), Halloween Mixer (Saturday, October 26) and our Fall Opening Tennis Event & Luncheon (Saturday, November 9). Please sign up in the Tennis Shop at your earliest convenience.

Our Jr. Tennis Program begins in early October and my entire staff is so excited for another great year on the courts with the little ones. One upcoming event for the kids is our very popular Jr. Halloween Tennis Pizza Party (Friday, October 25). Please sign up early as this event fills up quickly.

In closing, I am sure most, if not all of you, watched some of the recently played US Open Tennis Championships in NY. How amazing is Rafael Nadal? His determination, mental toughness, heart and footspeed is truly remarkable. It’s really hard not to marvel at all his achievements, longevity and will to win attitude. Nadal now stands at 19 grand slam singles titles. Will he reach Federer’s 20 next year and eventually surpass it? Can’t wait to see how it all plays out.

See you on the Courts!

Fitness✔DOMORE

For the last 30 years the personnel in the Fitness Center has been pushing the idea that you need to stay fit so that you keep your muscles strong, your joints flexible, your heart healthy, your waistline trim and now we are finding out that we were wrong! The main reason to work out is for your brain health. Studies have shown that years ago that people were concerned that they would outlive their money if they lived to be 80 or 90 but now they are more concerned with losing their cognitive capabilities and/or their memory. Research shows that less physical effort leads directly to less cognitive effort. So For all you gym users that is great news, keep it up. But for all you who we do not see in the gym, it is time to start. Exercise can affect many areas of your brain in just one session. It builds new cells, and then new synapses and then it strengthens those synapses and grows new neurons to stop your brain from shrinking. So depending on if you’re a moderate workout person or a vigorous workout person you need to UP your minimum amount of exercise to 5 hours a week (moderate people) or 2.5 hours a week (vigorous people). Make sure that these hours you spend in the gym include cardiovascular elements, resistance training, motor coordination, cognitive physical training and balance. Exercise also boosts your immune system, to fight off all sorts of infections. You can easily have the immune system of a 20 year old by regularly getting to the gym. Remember the fitter you are when something goes wrong, (and it always seems something does) the faster you’ll be back up and around living life to the fullest. It is time to get a personal trainer, Pilates teacher, Gyro instructor, take some classes, work your core and train your brain. Call Ginger at extension 427 to find the fit that’s right for you.

Dawn MacLellan Director of Spa & Salon at St. Andrews Country Club

The summer months have been quite busy for us here in the Spa & Salon. Our team has enjoyed serving our membership and using any spare time to sharpen the skills of their specific trade. We have been busy selecting new professional and boutique products and treatments to enhance the member experience here in the Spa & Salon. Many exciting events have been scheduled and we hope that you will come and experience all that we have to offer. Be sure to check the website and watch for flyers regarding these events. We have enhanced communication from the spa relaxation areas to the front desk for added convenience to our members. If at any time, the locker room attendant is not immediately available, you have the ability to communicate via phone located on the counter in the relaxation room. In the salon, we have added an incredible FAST DRYING, EASY REMOVAL, non-damaging nail polish line, Dazzle Dry. No soak off is required and dries in 5 minutes. Many members have tried the product and have raved about the results. In addition, we have selected many new vendors for both personal and gift giving needs. Eat protein at every meal, including breakfast.

When you eat carbohydrates, choose the high fiber, low sugar carbohydrates. The best choices are slow cooked oatmeal, sweet potatoes, beans, lentils, sprouted breads, grains and at least seven veggies/day.

Don’t eat unlimited amounts of fruit and be careful with the extra-sweet, extra-ripe variety. For now, keep fruits to 2-3 a day, and choose the low-sugar, high-fiber variety, like apples, pears, plums, and berries. For now, fruit should be eaten alone or with something like nuts. No fruit juice!

Eat dairy foods like low-fat (1%) cottage cheese or Greek yogurt. Stay away from hard cheeses, which are high in saturated fats.

Try eliminating alcohol. You can always go back to moderate drinking later on if it works for you.

Worry less about the amount of fat you eat and pay more attention to the kind of fat you eat. The worst kinds of fat are in margarine, and foods that contain hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils. The best are the omega-3: found in fish, walnuts, almonds, olive oil, avocado and flaxseed.

Stress can make you fat; try deep breathing exercises and take care of yourself.

Sleep deprivation will halt weight loss; half of the U.S. population is walking around in some degree of sleep deprivation. Begin by going to bed earlier, ban the TV, take a warm bath, and play soothing music.

Drink at least eight or more large glasses of pure water a day. Everyday and no excuses.

Drink 1-2 glasses of Green tea per day.
