New Office Hours As some of you may have heard, our secretary Jennifer, is going back to school. Her class schedule are all morning classes for the fall semester. Heartbeat September 2017

Spotlight

Invite a Friend,

Neighbor, Co-

Worker or Relative!

As we were getting ready for

the community fair we

created a little resource book

for those who don’t know St.

Andrew and what we have to

offer. So, if you have

someone you would like to

invite, please take one of

these little pamphlets to

share about your church

home. It’s an easy way to let

them get to know who we are

and what we have going on

throughout the year!

Greetings St. Andrew Lutheran Church!

I love this email that often goes around. I think it is appropriate this month.

“People come into your life for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. When you figure out which it is, you know exactly what to do.

When someone is in your life for a REASON, it is usually to meet a need you

have expressed outwardly or inwardly. They have come to assist you through

a difficulty, to provide you with guidance and support, to aid you physically,

emotionally, or spiritually. They may seem like a godsend, and they are. They are there for the

reason you need them to be. Then, without any wrong doing on your part or at an inconvenient time,

this person will say or do something to bring the relationship to an end. Sometimes they die.

Sometimes they walk away. Sometimes they act up or out and force you to take a stand. What we

must realize is that our need has been met, our desire fulfilled; their work is done. The prayer you sent up has been answered and it is now time to move on.

When people come into your life for a SEASON, it is because your turn has come to share, grow, or

learn. They may bring you an experience of peace or make you laugh. They may teach you

something you have never done. They usually give you an unbelievable amount of joy. Believe it! It is real! But, only for a season.

LIFETIME relationships teach you lifetime lessons; those things you must build upon in order to have

a solid emotional foundation. Your job is to accept the lesson, love the person/people (anyway); and

put what you have learned to use in all other relationships and areas of your life. It is said that love is blind but friendship is clairvoyant.”

As most of you have already heard, my reason and season with you is coming to an end September 30th. The joys and sorrows we have shared though will last my lifetime.

Just in case you didn’t get my letter of resignation, I wanted to include it in this month’s Heartbeat.

Dear St. Andrew Lutheran Church,

I am writing to you to announce my resignation from St. Andrew Lutheran Church effective

September 30th, 2017. My last day in the office will be Monday, September 25th. I have accepted a

call to St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sarasota, Florida.

It is bittersweet that I write this letter. It has been an honor, privilege, and blessing to be your pastor.

I have loved my time at St. Andrew. Together we have laughed (especially on Holy Humor Sundays)

and prayed, worshiped and served. Together we have celebrated births and baptisms. We have

grieved the passing of saints to their heavenly homes. We even walked through the personal

betrayal and death of Holy Week and the beautiful Resurrection morn with our break-in and recovery

effort. This is where I had my first Confirmation classes that I taught and confirmed. It has been a joy

to see you live out your mission statement of being people of prayer, life-long learners, faithful witnesses and world servants for Christ. I’ve been blessed to be among you.

But most of you know of my health issues in southern California. I had hoped they would get better

as I adjusted to being here, but it only got worse for both my mom and me. Each time I would go to

Florida, Hawaii, or Minnesota, I would feel so much better and then get sick all over again once I got

back to California. I remember saying at least once that I wish St. Andrew would be in Florida. I think

that went from my mouth to God’s ears, because St. Paul is a very similar congregation to St. Andrew

Page 3: St Andrew Lutheran Church Heartbeat · 2017-08-29 · 2 Greetings St. Andrew Lutheran Church! I love this email that often goes around. I think it is appropriate this month. “People

and it’s in Florida. I know this is an earlier departure than we all hoped when I started here, but I truly

believe this is where I am called to be at this time in my life. I also truly believe that God is calling St.

Andrew to something new and wonderful. During my ministry here we have continued to do all the

ministries you have done as a larger congregation only with fewer people and financial resources. I will continue to pray for you always as you discern your future as a congregation. It is bright!

From now until the time I leave, I will continue to pastor St. Andrew, engaging fully in the good and

important ministry we have yet to do together and the hard but grace filled process of saying “see you

later.” We still have many ministries to do together including the Bunco party on August 24th, the

celebration of George Simmons’ ministry on August 27th, the Community Thank You Fair for God’s

Work Our Hands weekend on September 9th, and the Bishop’s Gathering on September 23rd in Fullerton. I ask for your prayers and understanding as we all make this transition.

May God bless you and grant you peace,

-PrAshley Nicolls

We will have a luncheon for her prior

to her leaving. Details of date and

time to follow in weekly updates and

announcements.

This is Stewardship! Often you will hear about or see that someone new has come to visit, maybe you are that person! It can be intimidating to show up at a new church, you can feel lost and alone and unsure of how to change that and become a part of the church family. One great way to change that is to volunteer. You can connect with a smaller group of people than the overall church!

The Stewardship Commission is always looking for people! If you are interested in joining the commission to see where we can increase in helpers through all our ministries, if you are interested in helping us find ways of growing our church family, we hope you will consider joining the Stewardship Commission. If you are interested or would like more information, please contact Ellen Anderson our commission chair to see where you can help!

Other Ways You Can Give!

Thrivent Choice Dollars Did you know that Thrivent is not calling or e-mailing members any more regarding directing their current Choice Dollars? Sometimes your agent may call to remind you but not all agents provide that service. Please call or email your Thrivent representative to direct your dollars to St. Andrew. These dollars are being directed to very good causes including Peru, Stained glass brochure printing and many others.

Please pick up an Evangelism brochure from the table in the lounge. The brochure has all the information needed so that you can give a new neighbor who just moved near you regarding St. Andrew. Thank you to everyone who has their Thrivent Choice dollars directed to St. Andrew. Commission Highlight of the Month – Property So, what does the property commission do? How can I help the property commission? Well, the property commission has overseen a lot of upgrades to our campus over the last year. We have upgraded our kitchen with the help of Boy Scout Troop #438. We have changed over to LED lighting in the sanctuary and we have bought some new chairs for the Fellowship Hall and Room 5, just to name a few things. Where did the money come from to accomplish these things? From our 60/60 campaign!

Since the break-in back in April, our property commission has been working hard to replace the broken doors, fix our weak spots and make us a more secure facility. We have been blessed with the income that we got from all donations to help us recover from that incident to cover the costs associated.

If you are interested in what other projects are on the property commissions wish list of things to get done with the 60/60 campaign, please check out our 60th anniversary information page (pg. 10).

Rally Day Bible Distribution On August 13th, St. Andrew celebrated with our families as our 3 year olds, third graders, and our 7th grade Confirmation students were presented with their very own Bibles during worship. Congratulations to Eve Moran, Jasmine Rodriguez, Justin Linta, Elyse Reed, and Natalie Dickerson. We look forward to walking with you in your faith journey as you use these Bibles!

60th Anniversary Party!!

We have sent out the invitations in the mail, we have started planning the

concert and we are working on getting the wonderful meal to make this event

complete. We are looking forward to celebrating this big day! If you know of

someone who you would like to give an invitation to, extras can be found in

the narthex. All are welcome to our big party. The RSVP deadline is October 1st.

2nd Annual Jazz Fest!

Mark your calendars! Our second annual jazz fest will be taking place on November 18th at 6 pm.

There will be wonderful music provided by Porfirio Mojica and other

musicians, delicious food, coffee drinks, wine and beer. Funds raised will

benefit our music ministry. Flyers are available in the narthex to take and share with others!

God’s Work, Our Hands – First Responder Cookies!

We will also be doing our traditional cookies for the first responders this weekend as

well! If you are interested in making cookies please bring them to the church either

Friday the 8th or Saturday the 9th in the morning. We will be distributing the cookies

to the different locations on Sunday morning the 10th after the ONE service. If you have any questions you can contact Elissa Linta.

Emergency Contacts As many of us have found throughout life, things can happen at the craziest of

times… even when you are at church! With the new computer program in the

church office we are able to now keep track of things like emergency contacts. We

want to have a note of emergency contact information for you in the event

something happens while you are at church. Please call, email or complete the

information on the back of your welcome card and we will make sure to note it in

the software confidentially. This may give you peace of mind to know that if a moment arises where first responders are needed your family member will also be contacted.

Refreshments on Sunday Mornings Thank you to our faithful few who provide us weekly treats, some pulling double duty every month to

make sure the congregation has some delightful munchies for our fellowship time after services. If

you would like to help provide some of the munchies and give these dedicated ladies a chance to get a Sunday off please contact the church office.

Financial Information

Thanks to all who are supporting St. Andrew and our mission to share God’s love with our congregation, community and the world.

Contributions $25,662 $22,667 $152,866 $158,667

Other Income $4,703 $1,390 $12,689 $9,730

Total Income $30,365 $24,057 $165,575 $168,397

A note on the financials: These numbers do not reflect our loan payments that we make through the

year. While our ministries have been careful with the money spent this year, we have had significant

expenses for property repairs that have come out of the contributions income that would normally go

towards the loan payment. The loan payments have totaled to date this year $18,747. We have started to enter the call process which will require its own budget as well.

60th Anniversary News!

Chairs Needed!

NEW CHAIRS ARE HERE…

We purchased about 30 of the classroom chairs and 70 of the Fellowship Hall chairs. We are heading towards our big 60th anniversary party where we are

hoping members from long ago and those we have today will attend. How nice it

will be to have comfortable chairs to sit in for the big event!

If you would like to “Purchase” a chair please donate $50 and note “Chair” on

your check or use the chair donation envelope from the lounge!

UPDATE: We have currently raised about 50% of the costs of the chairs!

60/60 Campaign Projects

Many of you have asked people on the church council what exactly the 60 for 60 is.

The goal is to raise $60,000 to celebrate our 60 years in the community.

Many of you are unsure what that money will go towards. We just finished our first and primary project of the Fellowship Hall kitchen remodel. The amount of money we spent was about $20,000 so we broke even on that

project.

There are still many more projects that we need to get done. Below is the list of projects we would like to accomplish with the $60,000 we are trying to raise.

Start as soon as funds are

available:

• Stucco repair at the base of the Fellowship Hall and Education Wing

• Paint after stucco repair • Room C in the Fellowship

Hall (full length picture window is damaged causing rain to come in. Needs full replacement)

The second priority list:

• Heating/Air Conditioning that are 30 years old

• Fellowship Hall floor replacement

• Internet access to all parts of the campus (runs $300 per month on top of office internet costs)

• Signs

If we have the funds last priority

projects are:

• Irrigation repair • Grounds/Labyrinth • Stage/Sound system

Our Trees

You may have heard on August 20th that we have one really sick tree. The problem with that tree can

infect the other trees. In an effort to save the other trees on our property we are removing the sick tree soon. If you have any questions please contact Art Revueltas

As of July 31, 2017

St. Andrew is Moving Forward

As you may have heard at church from our Council President, we have had a few Church Council meetings regarding starting the transition and call process. The day after we contacted the Synod Office, Pastor Tuvey-Allen attended our Council Meeting to let us know what the process is and how we get started. We want want you to know that we are working hard on getting everything in place to get an interim pastor quickly and will keep you updated on our progress.
