Reflection on Today’s Readings:

St. Anastasia Catholic Church, Los Angeles, California Easter Sunday: Resurrection of the Lord April 24th, 2011

^ Ì The Family Visitation Ministry offers spiritual support to those in need. Please call Sr. Teresita at 310-216-2001, or call the Rectory Office at 310-670-2243, x42.

FOCUS: Christ is Risen, and raises us up to new life in Him - Christ is Risen! His rising from the dead invites us to be raised up to a new and fuller life in Him. We are encouraged to have our sights set on the things of heaven, rather than remaining earthbound in our spirit. Our faith in Christ’s Resurrection gives us confidence and hope that we, too, will one day overcome death and live forever with Him in heaven. LITURGY OF THE WORD: In the first reading, Peter teaches about salvation and forgiveness in Christ. In the second reading, we are reminded that, since we have received new life in Christ, we are to keep our eyes fixed on heaven. The Gospel tells of the discovery of the empty tomb. Upon hearing the news, Peter and John go to see it for themselves. LORD HEAR OUR PRAYER … For those who are ill,

and those in need of our prayers … Please let us know about the condition of those we’re praying for. We’ll keep/remove their name (s) as requested, after the first few weeks.

ËTo receive Holy Communion (for those who are sick, hospitalized, or home bound) please call Gloria Bowen, 310.670.5971, Eucharistic Minister to the Sick. To have the name(s) included in our prayers, call the Parish Office at 310-670-2243.

_ Please pray for those who have died, especially Jerry Garrison (cousin of Bill Corrigan), and Mary Kay Pence (sister of Martha Kelly) that they may rest in peace.

FACT OF LIFE "I Will Open Your Graves and Have You Rise From Them"

For certain afflictions, there exists no human remedy. Words of encouragement often fail to effect any change. Many times people in these situations are not able to do anything, not even pray. They are like Lazarus in the tomb. They need others to do something for them. Jesus once spoke these words to his disciples: "Heal the sick, raise the dead" (Matthew 10:8). Among the corporal works of mercy: feeding the hungry; giving drink to the thirsty; clothing the naked; sheltering the homeless; visiting the sick; visiting prisoners, the last one is burying the dead. Today's Gospel tells us that in addition to this corporal work of mercy, we must also "raise the dead." Only the One who has entered death's realm and engaged death itself in battle can give life to those who have died. John recounts the raising of Lazarus as a sign that transforms the tragedy into hope. Lazarus' illness and death are the occasion for the manifestation of God's glory. As Christians we do not expect to escape death; but we approach it with faith in the resurrection. (Father Thomas Rosica, Salt and Light Catholic Media Foundation). Prayer for Life: We cry out for Your mercy and ask you to remove the scourge of abortion from our land. Use us as your vessels, Lord, to bring the light of Your Truth to our nation once again. We pray this in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Joy With No End ≈ Now let the heav’ns be joyful, and earth her song begin, the whole world keep high triumph and all that is therein; let all things in creation their notes of gladnes blend, for Christ the Lord has Risen, our joy that has no end. - John Mason Neale

When Christ your life appears, then you too will appear with Him in glory. - Colossians 3:4

Easter Sunday - Very early in the morning after the Sabbath, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb to anoint Jesus’ body with precious oils. The reward of

this good and conscientious steward was to be among the first to know that Jesus had been raised from the dead! Alleluia!

Easter Sunday: Resurrection of the Lord Ministries in Action … April 24th, 2011

Support Archdiocese’s ‘Keep Kids Safe’ Campaign - April is national Child Abuse Prevention Month and “Keep Kids Safe” month in the Los Angeles Archdiocese.

It is most appropriate that these events take place during the Easter Season, since there is no better time to celebrate the protection of our most valuable gift from God — our children. During this week, children in Catholic schools and Religious Education programs in the Archdio-cese will wear bright blue ribbon shaped stickers that say, “Keep Kids Safe.” The stickers are part of a campaign to highlight the Archdiocese’s extensive abuse prevention and education programs for children and adults. Support our

parish and school in this campaign by contacting the parish office for more information on parish child safety activities, or call the Archdiocese Safeguard the Children Office, (213) 637-7508. For particular help, call Assistance Ministry at 213-637-7650.

Dear Parishioners, In the Easter Proclamation (or Exultet) on Holy Saturday,

the words are song: “Christ has conquered! Glory fills you! Darkness vanishes forever!“ Your priests are very grateful for the beautiful example of faith and love that each of you demonstrates, for your commitment to Jesus, and for your loyalty to our worshipping community. Easter celebrates a great promise and hope. And we give thanks to our loving Heavenly Father for the gift of the Resurrection of Jesus. May we, who were buried with Christ in Baptism, rise also with Him to everlasting life. “Ye sons and daughters, let us sing! The King of Heaven, our glorious King! From death today rose triumphing! Alleluia!” In the love of Christ Jesus, Fr. Gabe

FEAST OF FAITH - How do we celebrate Easter, the greatest of our Christian feasts? By doing what we do every Sunday and every day: celebrating the Mass. On the first Easter, as the heartbroken disciples walked the road to Emmaus, the Lord was with them but they did not realize it. They only recognized Him “in the breaking of the bread.” It’s the same for us. In the Mass– the breaking of the bread—we meet the Risen Lord together. We meet Him and each other—for by our Baptism into His death and resurrection, we have become members of one body, the Body of Christ. We meet Him in his word—in the liturgy the scriptures are proclaimed to us, that they might take root and grow in us. And we meet Him in a special way in the Eucharist, the Sacrament of His Body and Blood, which is food for resurrection: “whoever eats this bread will live forever. The Lord is Risen indeed, and it’s the Risen One who truly presides at this and every Eucharist. Corinna Laughlin, 8 Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

Stewardship is a way of Life for St. Anastasia Church

Living Faith for Kids… The stone which the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. By the Lord this has been done; it is wonderful in our eyes. Psalm 118:22-23 Jesus could not have been any more rejected by the “builders” of His time: The chief priests condemned Him and the Romans soldiers put Him to death. Even His friends abandoned Him at the end. All He had left was the saving power of God. That was more than enough. Now Jesus is the cornerstone of the Church, sharing with us His saving power for the salvation of the world. Thank you God, for your goodness and your power.
