MASS INTENTIONS FOR THIS WEEK:

October 9th, 2016, 28th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME: Jesus healed ten lepers in today’s Gospel. Only one (ten percent) came back to say thank you. I, too, have received many blessings from the Lord — indeed, all I am and all I have is gift! How and how often have I remembered to thank Him?

GRATITUDE Surely we can all recall at least a few days in our lives when things were going so well that nothing could put us in a bad mood. Maybe it was the day a very special person asked us to the senior prom, or perhaps it was our wedding day. Maybe it was the day we learned that we were expecting a long-awaited child, or the day we got an overdue promotion. There was elation in our hearts and lightness in our step, an extraordinary vitality throughout the day. We probably got on the phone right away to tell at least a few key people about our good fortune. This is surely how Naaman and the leper must have felt when they were rid of their terrible diseases. They were hard-pressed to contain their gratitude, and although they were both unfamiliar with the customs of a foreign land, they had the good manners to thank the people responsible for their cures. Kids Living Faith: Sunday, October 9th, 2016

28th Sunday in Ordinary Time Ten were cleansed, were they not?

Where are the other nine? - Luke 17:17

Kyle was embarrassed. His aunt had given him an expensive baseball ball for his birthday. But Kyle didn’t feel like he deserved it. After all, he didn’t really see his aunt very much. So Kyle put off writing a thank you note. He just didn’t know what to say. Maybe that’s the reason the nine lepers in today’s Gospel never returned to thank Jesus for curing them. Maybe they didn’t feel they deserved it. But whether we think we deserve gifts or not, it’s good to let people know how thankful we are because it isn’t about us—it’s about how much others love and care for us.

Dear God, help me remember that all good gifts come from you!

WE ENCOURAGE ALL TO READ AND REFLECT ON THE BIBLICAL PASSAGES THAT

WILL BE PROCLAIMED AT ALL THE MASSES NEXT WEEK

Psalm — Our help is from the Lord, who made heaven and earth (Psalm 121). Second Reading — Remain faithful; proclaim the word; be persistent whether it is convenient or not (2 Timothy 3:14 — 4:2). Gospel — God will secure the rights of the chosen who call out day and night (Luke 18:1-8).

This Week: Saturday, October 8th/ Sunday, October 9th Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time

To Receive Holy Communion (For those who are sick, hospitalized, or home bound). Please call Gloria Bowen, Eucharistic Minister to the sick at 310-670-5971.

Reflections on Today’s Readings:

FOCUS: Faith in the midst of adversity fortifies the soul. When things are going well, it is easy to believe in a loving God. In the midst of adversity, believing can be more difficult. Witness today the strong faith of Naaman, Saint Paul speaking from prison, and the leper who was a Samaritan. All three good roles models for us in times of difficulty.

LITURGY OF THE WORD: In our first reading and in the Gospel, Elisah, a man of God, and Jesus, the son of God, heal lepers. We see the strong faith of Naaman and the Samaritan. We also hear of the nine who lacked gratitude. In the second reading, Paul speaks out from prison that the Word of God cannot be chained.

Fall Film Study Our Fall Film Study continues this Thursday, October 13th, and the

following one, October 20th in the School Library at 7:30 PM.

(Please note the new location.) We will be viewing and

discussing the film AAARRANGEDRRANGEDRRANGED...

This story of the friendship between a young Orthodox Jewish woman and a Muslim woman living in New York was

released in 2007 but is even more timely today. A film of warmth and humor, it also raises interesting questions about the nature of love and cultural imperatives. We will screen about a third of the movie

each evening, followed by discussion. For further information please contact Mark or Shelley Calde at 310-641-1157.

Diaper Drive for Unborn

Local pregnancy centers bring hope and material assistance to women pregnant in difficult circumstances. You can help

these women choose life by bringing some diapers and wipes to church and placing them in a crib by October 31. They will be delivered to local pregnancy counseling centers to give these women hope. For more information contact: [email protected] or 310-670-0285.

Celebrate Christmas at the Festival of Lights

Join the St. Anastasia Social Club as we travel to the Mission Inn in Riverside

to partake in their fabulous Festival of Lights holiday displays. We will start with lunch at the famous Cask and Cleaver Steakhouse in Riverside, followed by a guided tour of the Inn and museum. Free time will be available for browsing and shopping. The bus will be leaving St. Anastasia at 11:45 AM on Friday, December 9, and will return about 8:30 PM. The price is $80, which must be paid in full by November 4. As always, all gratuities are included. To make reservations or for more information, call Laurette at 310-670-2488.

The month of the Holy Rosary is October and this entire month is dedicated to the Rosary. The feast day of the Holy Rosary in particular is October 7th. The feast of the Rosary is held on October 7th in memory of the glorious and triumphant victory at the battle of Lepanto. That battle was the most convincing military victory that proved without a doubt the great power of the Rosary. The month of October is a good time to commit to praying the Rosary everyday. The Rosary will bring great peace and holiness to your life. It is a powerful instrument for conversion. The Rosary is the best method of honoring Mary.

Ministry equips us to deepen our love for God and share our faith…

Avoid “fixing” and try to listen and understand Sometimes adults may have a

tendency to try and fix problems that come up with their children. While the instinct to help and the loving concern behind it is understandable, it is not always the best course of action if the child is not learning something about how to handle a problem at least partly on their own. For some problems, children just need a good listener; for others they need guidance and help discerning how best to respond. Try asking questions, encouraging solutions, and praying with and for the child. For a copy of the VIRTUS® article “Communication Tip No. 10: You Can’t Fix Them, But You Can…” email [email protected] or call 213-637-7227.
