PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

WHOLE SCHOOL ASSEMBLY

We held a whole school assembly on Thursday 21 October to celebrate the achievements of our students and to acknowledge our class of 2010. A number of students were recognised for their efforts in the Australian Mathematics Competition and Mathematics Challenge. The debating teams were congratulated for once again reaching great heights. Several volleyball teams were presented with medallions for winning lunchtime competitions held during term 3. Those students involved in the 40 hour famine were acknowledged for their efforts and for making a difference in our global community. The school captains and vice captains provided some words of wisdom and a trip down memory lane. The assembly finished with a slide show which morphs a year 7 photo into a more recent photo of our current year 12 students. I received a lot of positive feedback about the new projector system which was used for the first time at a whole school assembly.

SWISS AND ITALIAN FESTA

I attended the Swiss and Italian Festa Schools Performance at the Hepburn Palais on Saturday 16 October. The students from our local primary schools once again kept everyone entertained and all of the students should be proud of their efforts. Lewis Ingham did a professional job with the sound system whilst Aiden Carter and Taylah Godfrey were applauded on numerous occasions as masters of ceremonies. I would like to acknowledge the efforts of Susan Verbyla who does make a tremendous contribution in our wider community.

JUNIOR SCHOOL NEWS

YEAR 8 & 9 2011

To save paper the 2011 Year 8 & 9 handbooks will not be distributed this year in hard copy. They are available on the school website: www.daylesfordsc.vic.edu.au. Learning Rotation preference sheets have been distributed to Year 7 and 8 students and many students have returned their forms. The data has been entered and we are now deciding on the Learning Rotation subjects that will run in 2011. Students will be placed into subjects according to their preference sheet. If your child has not returned their preference sheet they can still do so.

PRIMARY SCHOOL VISITS

Mr Gooding will be visiting all of our feeder primary schools during the week commencing Monday 25th October. He will answer any questions that current grade 6 students may have with regard to the orientation day and to provide some insight into what it will be like to be a Daylesford Secondary College student.

TERM 4 CLASSES

This week sees Year 12s completing formal classes and we wish them all the best for their exams and their future. It is important to remember that the end of the term for the rest of the school is still many weeks away and that all students need to keep applying themselves. This means bringing all the required equipment/ books etc to all classes, completing all set tasks and trying their hardest.

4

Let’s aim for great attendance in 2010! Missing school is an easy way for your child to be disadvantaged. It‟s of utmost importance for your child to be at school every day of term, unless they have a really significant reason for being at home. Let‟s aim to improve the individual attendance of every child at Daylesford Secondary College for 2010. „It‟s Not OK To Be Away!‟ (P.S don‟t forget to inform the College if your child is absent. We have a duty of care to know where your child is if they are supposed to be at school.)

HIGH SCHOOL SPOOFICAL

REPRISE.

Just before we put our fabulous

production to bed for 2010 I would like

to share with you just some of the

fabulous feedback we have received.

Again, we must thank our Drama

teacher, Wayne Pickering for his

dedication and creativity.

Here’s a review from Petrus.

High School Spoof-ical. The very rhythmic and feel good opening number ‟Dizney Kidz‟, sung by a stage full of energetic students, awoke the audience out of its winter slumber into the new energy of spring and, at the same time, launched this year‟s wonderful high school play. The student‟s enthusiasm engaged the audience‟s

attention and readied them for a journey of wonder and delight.

One of the highlights of the Daylesford Secondary College agenda is, undoubtedly, their annual play and this year‟s production, once again, did not disappoint. Director Wayne Pickering, plus his staff and cast, have created something special, something magical. A musical play of great imagination.

This year‟s play, „High-School spoof-ical‟ was, first and foremost, great entertainment. It also had all the necessary elements to make it exciting. Gutsy musical numbers, special surprises, wonderful make-up, inventive costumes, a multimedia aspect and a down to earth story line. Secondly, it showcased the amazing talents of the students and expressed plenty of great acting potential. Some of the actors were outstanding. Such promise. Young kids with a demanding stage presence.

The whole production felt as if it was the student‟s own story. A presentation, which dealt with the issues of their age group, was therefore relevant, believable and engaging for both them and their audience. Issues such as questions of relationships, sex, puberty, periods, woodies and jealousy which, ultimately, developed into a celebration of teenage life.

As a result of the strength and success of the performance, we, the audience members, were once again re-assured that the future is in safe hands, that the all important creative spirit (that powerful engine-room of any sane society) is, by the enthusiastic efforts of the performers, kept very much alive.

And here lies the magic of the annual performance, the director, of many years and as many wonderful creations, has once again been able to bring the best out in his students. And how, in this endeavour, he continues to discover not only new talent for us to enjoy and for the students to savour and develop, but also how he encourages (the most important part of a teacher‟s responsibility) the shy, often hidden, and undeveloped talents of many others, by giving as many students as possible a go. Allowing them to shine, boost their confidence and excite their sense of delight. In the process he has opened the door to creative possibilities not only for those on stage, but also for those behind the scenes. A teacher with a passion for his subject. A play such as this also boosts the self esteem and confidence of all the

6

participants and, as a consequence, that of the whole of the school community.

I came away from the evening high on the artistic energy of the play and, indeed, a great feeling of trust in the future of our community. It is in safe and creative hands.

With thanks to all involved. Petrus
