FROM THE EDITOR

Helping other people has always been an important part of the Scout promise and we have some good examples of this in action in this edition of “Banger & Mash”. A Scout Troop helped prepare beds in a church as a night shelter for homeless people this winter and some Explorers delivered a minibus load of Christmas presents to a children’s hospital. A Cub Pack raised money for Red Nose Day to help other children. These are just a few examples of Scouting in action in the local community. We also have some very talented youngsters in Scouting locally. Beavers, Cubs and Scouts in one Group recently took their Artist Badge, painting still life subjects in a way that would have done credit to an adult art class! Another Cub Pack produced amazing model aircraft from odds and ends. Yet another Pack made their own fudge from raw materials and beautifully gift-wrapped the results for Valentine’s Day. For Mother’s Day Cubs also made lovely cards to take home. The next edition of “Bangers and Mash” will be published around the end of July 2017. Please let me have your contributions by Sunday 9TH July 2017. I’m happy to receive contributions at any time- please continue letting me have news and photos of events as they happen. It makes my job much easier!

FROM THE

DISTRICT COMMISSIONER Well here we are in the summer term again and hopefully getting outdoors for some fun and adventure. I know there are great activities being run all around the District, well done. Recently Sally and I spent the day at Scout Park helping at the Monopoly Run. What a great event that is with Explorers, Network and Leaders coming from as far away as Scotland and Cornwall to take part. The success of this event is all down to the preparation put in by Mike Thurston and his team. A great big well done to them. Of course the really great thing about the Monopoly Run is that Explorers are trusted to complete a task on their own with little or no leader involvement and that is what we all work towards in the events and activities we run for our younger members. You will have seen in the press recently the huge number of children waiting to join Scouting around the Country. Our lists are not as large as some but I know we have young people who would love to join Scouting and can't. A need for leaders and helpers should be on all our minds and we should all encourage anyone we know to take up the challenge, after all we know that it is fun, we get to try new things and learn new skills and so can they we just need to invite them in. Many thanks to you all for all you do and I look forward to seeing many of you at our AGM on May 24th at the Civic Centre.

ST. GEORGE’S DAY CELEBRATIONS

This year we were able to celebrated St. George’s Day on the actual day – Sunday 23rd April – and in glorious spring sunshine! In a change from recent years the parade started in Gentlemen’s Row outside Enfield Registry Office. There were some amazing “St. George” costumes worn by the youngsters plus plenty of St. George’s flags, banners and hats to make the parade a really festive occasion and a very happy celebration of St. George’s Day.

5

There was even an old Scout trek car with a dragon’s head on it!

6

The Enfield District Scout Band led the parade, but this year they were on a lorry float rather than walking along, and were supplemented by music from various vehicles along the parade.

7

All the Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers, Network Scouts, Rainbows, Guides, Senior Section and their Leaders made their way through Enfield town along Church Street and Silver Street watched by crowds of parents and other members of the public. The parade finished in Portcullis car park opposite the Civic Centre with the traditional renewal of promises by each of the Sections. All the young people and their Leaders together made an impressive sight.

CUBS CONNECT4 COMPETITION On Monday 30th January 28 Cubs took part in this year’s Connect4 competition at the Tristram Drive HQ. Each Cub played 10 games, moving round to play a

different opponent for each game. At the end of the evening the 19th Enfield A Team were the winners, with the 19th Enfield B Team as runners up and the 5th Enfield in third place.

29TH ENFIELD MAKE MODEL AIRCRAFT

The 29th Enfield Cubs had an aircraft themed Pack meeting in February. After games relating to aircraft and airfields, the Cubs made model aircraft out of wooden clothes pegs and lolly sticks – and then painted the models in their own liveries. The Cubs produced a lot of excellent models.

DISTRICT CUB BUS MONOPOLY RUN

The Cub bus Monopoly run took place on Saturday 18th March. This year there was a different route. Starting from the 8th Enfield HQ at Ponders End Methodist church the Cubs went by bus to Waltham Cross. After looking for clues there they went back by bus along Bullsmoor Lane and the Great Cambridge Road to Morrisons. Then the Cubs either walked or got a bus along Southbury Rd back to Ponders End bus garage and then round the corner back to the 8th Enfield HQ.

Along the way the Cubs played a version of bingo using the route numbers on bus destination blinds. This worked very well with the teams getting most routes including a two groups who got a N279 by asking the driver to change the blind for them.

The results were as follows:- 1st place the 14th Enfield with 433 points. 2nd place the 18th Edmonton with 390 points. 3rd place the 20th Edmonton with 294 points. 4th place the 5th /16th Enfield with 245 points. 5th place the 8th Enfield with 221 points. Thanks to Martyn Kertai for organising the event and to Beryl of the 8th Enfield for the use of their HQ and her help.

RED NOSE DAY

The 5th Enfield cubs had a Red Nose Day meeting. They all dressed in red, the redder the better. The prize for the reddest Cub was won by Matteo.

They made some cakes and iced others throughout the evening. The parents bought the cakes at the end and they raised £100.

SOUTHERN 50 IN THE CHILTERNS On a freezing cold snowy Saturday morning in February 2017 at 07:50, our Edmonton team of Leaders (“Wheelers Whingers”), set off from Tring school at the start of this year’s Southern 50 event.

After hiking a remarkable 50 km which is approximately 76,000 steps, and burning almost 3,000 calories in a time of 12 hours 49 minutes, Abby Wheeler (novice walker), Dave Wheeler & Bradley Skinner Wright, were proud to take 27th place. I would like to congratulate you all on a gutsy performance……..!

BUSH HILL PARK EXPLORER SCOUT

UNIT

So just before Christmas we answered a cry for help from a local guy on Facebook, he needed help to transport some Christmas presents to the Evelina London Children's Hospital near Westminster. After a short conversation we offered to help. Taking a few gifts into London just in time for Santa to deliver on Christmas Eve, nothing to special about that. What we found was someone who was involved with the Evelina Hospital for very personal reasons. He had lost his baby son shortly after birth, the hospital had done all it could but was unable to save baby Isaac. The support that the hospital gave during and after this awful experience was amazing. Our new friend and his wife decided to help where they could. Running the London marathon to raise money and collecting gifts for Christmas.

The first year they managed to collect a full car load, this year people had heard about what they were doing and they ended up with £10,000 worth of new to us and gifts for the children in hospital. It ended up being a minibus full.

Two our Explorers/Young Leaders, Luke and Andrea, came to help move all these amazing gifts.

20

When we arrived at the hospital we realised how much of a special place this is. It's not like walking into a normal hospital, it was busy with people with their kids, all trying to take their mind off of what is a place for very sick children. As you walk in there is a helter-skelter in the middle of the building reaching up 3 floors. Everywhere you looked there was fun things to distract the eye. It was a great feeling to have helped out in a very small way. We have offered to help as a Scout Group this year, offering somewhere to collect and store the gifts and with the help of Santa and his sleigh deliver to the hospital.

To our great surprise, we were invited by Lord and Lady Fink to the House of Lords for an evening reception and a thank you for helping out. It was a fantastic evening listening to some very emotional and inspiring people talking about the great pioneering work done by some of the best paediatric doctors in the world.
