Message from the President

Message from the President

http://www.sea-pines.net/

As we move into the hot summer months

we will take a break from the monthly

civic association meetings and give our

Sea Pines residents time to enjoy outdoor

activities, tackle home projects, or engage

in family time. During these three

months the SPCA board will be very busy

working on making improvements to our

community. I am pleased to tell you that

at our last SPCA meeting we received

unanimous approval to move forward on a

project that will route electrical power into

the Southwind Park area. This is a BIG

first step in the development of the park

and I want to thank all of the voting mem-

bers who share our vision of making this

area a special community asset in Sea

Pines.

Over the next month or two, Withla-

coochee Electric will bore underground

and route electricity to a 30 foot dusk-to-

dawn street lamp at the entrance gate to

the park. Once we have the street lamp in

place, the SPCA will install security cam-

eras in the park similar to those at the

boat ramp. These cameras have high defi-

nition (HD) resolution and will capture

most areas in the park. For those of you

who have a mooring slip along the sea

wall, you will be able to monitor activity

by viewing images from the cameras on a

smart phone (if you download and install

the app). In addition, we can break off

metered lines (at your expense) for those

who wish to run electricity to their respec-

tive mooring space.

The SPCA board plans to make improve-

ments to the Southwind Park in a phased

development approach. Ideas include

BBQ pits, a kayak launch, fishing dock,

and a pavilion. Your ideas and input to

this process are welcomed and greatly ap-

preciated! After consideration of all the

suggestions, we will select and prioritize

the improvements. Please make your

voice heard and attend the meetings start-

ing in September.

For those who missed our last meeting, we

were pleased to have County Commissioner

Jack Mariano as a special guest. Jack spoke

about various projects Pasco County is work-

ing on that have a direct or indirect impact

on the Sea Pines community. Two projects

that generated the most interest and ques-

tions were the channel dredging program,

and the paving of Sea Pines Drive. Many

residents on both sides (Preserves and Wood-

lands) are boaters and dredging our channel

would be a huge improvement to our commu-

nity. Jack requested that all of us send an

email to him AND all of the Pasco County

commissioners requesting they approve fund-

ing to make our channel deeper. The email

address is: countycommission-

[email protected].

In regards to Sea Pines Drive, we will move

forward to get an estimate of cost from Pasco

County to pave Sea Pines Drive. A handful

of residents have volunteered to help me. A

big Thank You to all of you who volunteered

to help!

On a disappointing note - I was informed

today that trash is being dumped on vacant

lots in Sea Pines. Our crew works very hard

to keep Sea Pines looking great and they can-

not be burdened with cleaning up old carpet,

furniture, and yard waste. This is unac-

ceptable! We cannot place cameras every-

where in Sea Pines so I am asking everyone

to keep an eye out and contact me if you see

anyone dumping on a vacant lot. A vehicle

description and tag number would be helpful.

Thanks.

Sea Pines Meeting Minutes for May 15, 2019

The meeting was called to order at 7:00. The entire board was

present and 24 members attended.

There was a motion and second to approve the April meeting

minutes as documented in the Sea Pines Newsletter.

Jerry Sweet gave the Treasurer’s Report for April. There were no

questions.

Jack Mariano, County Commissioner, District 5, was our guest

speaker. He spoke for quite a while and was open to answering

as many questions as he could. He will be back at our September

or October meeting to update us on any progress. Members

should plan to attend to hear what he has to say and let him

know what is important to our community.

Commissioner Mariano discussed several topics, but there was

one important general point that he made. He encouraged all

residents to email him on any subject, but he emphasized the

importance of also emailing the entire county commission. They

will be involved in anything he might propose or want to act on,

and it will be easier if the others are already informed on the

issue too. Be a squeaky wheel, and squeak to all who are tasked

with listening in our county.

[email protected]

[email protected]

Commissioner Mariano addressed questions regarding plans for

converting existing septic tanks to sewer, improving stormwater

drainage, repaving roads with an emphasis on Sea Pines Drive,

finishing clearing our culverts and dredging and improving Pasco

County canals and channels. There were not a lot of specific de-

tails or dates, but he laid out some plans that are in the works

and gave some guidance on things we can do to help push items

we feel are important for the community of Sea Pines.

Randy proposed to Commissioner Mariano that Pasco County

adopt the same invasive plant control ordinance that Hernando

County has on the books. Randy had already researched and had

a copy of the ordinance already in place in Hernando, which

Commissioner Mariano asked Randy to send to him, as well as

the other county commissioners.

Report of Standing Committees

Boat Ramp

The boat ramp committee has purchased the BLINK cameras

and are working out the details for getting them installed and

communicating with the online app. They should be up and run-

ning over the summer.

Mowing

All mowing is currently up-to-date.

Adopt-A-Road

A few members met at the clubhouse on Saturday, May 18th to

clean up our stretch of Old Dixie from the Sun West Park to New

York. The group is very organized with all the equipment needed

to stage “pickers” and get the job done quickly and efficiently;

however, we could certainly use more volunteers. Keep your eyes

out for the next planned clean up and show up!

Membership

We have 755 paid members as of the end of April.

Newsletter

The Sea Pines newsletter will continue to be published over the

summer months even though we will not be having monthly

meetings in June, July or August. Be sure and check it out to

keep up with any SPCA news over the summer. If you have

news, ads or anything else to contribute to the newsletter, please

make sure your submissions are sent to Jerry Sweet by the 20th

of the month.

Parks

Maintenance on both parks is up-to-date and both are looking

great. The lock has been put back on the gate on the Southwind

Park, and keys are available for those who would like access to

the park.

Welcome

The welcome committee has put together a nice package with all

kinds of useful information and some contributions from local

businesses. Please contact Donna if you are aware of new home-

owners in the neighborhood.

Website

The new website has been officially rolled out. View it at

seapines-fl.com. They are working on an e-commerce element,

so that members can pay their Sea Pines invoices online. We are

really hoping that we will be able to provide interesting infor-

mation to the community and maybe get some content and con-

tributions from the membership, as well.

Old Business

The board presented a quote from Withlacoochee River Electric

for having a transformer and a 30’ light pole installed inside

Southwind Park. This is an important first step for the park be-

coming more of a neighborhood asset. It will allow the installa-

tion of security cameras and potentially a sliding gate for the

park.

The quote received from Withlacoochee was for $5600. A motion

was made and seconded to approve the funds to have the work

done, and it passed unanimously.

New Business

Don Spence (16231 Sea Pines Drive) has volunteered to be the

Petition Leader for the effort to get Sea Pines Drive paved. The

board will be working with Don to provide Pasco County with the

necessary documents to get the ball rolling.

We are still looking for a leader/organizer to head up an

EVENTS Committee. This committee would be responsible for

organizing Sea Pines events such as the Volunteers Appreciation

Dinner, Christmas Party, Trunk-or-Treat, and perhaps some

new events. If you are interested or know someone who might

like to get involved with activities in the community, please con-

tact a member of the board.

There being no additional business, the meeting was adjourned

at 8:27.

*******SEA PINES WOMEN’S CLUB*******

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN JUNE

This past season, of wonderful times together, has come to an end. We will not be meeting over the summer this year. In past years we have tried to continue with a shortened schedule without success. I do hope that you will all check out the monthly submissions to the newsletter, as I will be writing very short stories for each month. The stories will be about adventures that the Women’s club has experi-enced. I hope you enjoy.

Please watch for our fall re-start…. It will be in September…. And we hope you will be part of our next season of fun.

A DAY AT THE RACES

Once the races start in November we go to them once a month. It has always been a hit with the ladies. We pool our money and bet on each race as a group, and then at the end of the day we split all the “winnings”. There have always been fun times and there are always those special memories. We usually watch the first two rac-es track side, then we go to the clubhouse, and have a lovely lunch and possible a bloody Mary….in the air conditioning We have been doing this for many years, and we always have lots of fun. Here are a few special memories from these outings.

HOW LUCKY CAN YOU GET!

On one of our first outings to Tampa Bay Downs we did as usual. But, by the end of the day, splitting our winnings we found that the total came to .47 cents each. (Not anything I would ever brag about). We left that day with our shabby winnings. Of course we always tip well, and make sure that the hostess had a tip (as we had great seats). When we went to the races the following month, we got the most wonderful seating… at the window, where there were high rollers! As the hostess took us to our seats she introduced us to one of the high rollers, indicating that we had been there the month before, and must have won, since we were so gracious about her tip! Of course we informed them that our 47 cents was nothing to brag about! Needless to say, the high roller was very pleasant to us, but never asked for our advice in betting!

HOW CLOSE DO YOU REALLY WANT TO GET?

During one of our outings we all decided to get up to the track, as the horses were about to run. As we all stood there watching the horses get into the gate, and as the announcer began “AND….. THERE’RE OFF”….. The pigeons that were in the track, just in front of us took off….. Over our heads, and of course, lightening their load just as they were above us! We spent some time in the ladies room before going to lunch!

WOW…. HOW DID YOU DO THAT?

Sometimes we have “newbie’s” that join us. We always try to make sure that they are informed and know as much as we have learned over the years (that’s really not so much). Anyway, a few years ago we had a newbie join us. It was a great day, and everyone was hav-ing a really good time. By the time that the last race was ready to run, half of our group (there were about 9 of us) decided to go track-side to see the last race, so the rest of us stayed in the clubhouse. As the last race came in we began to realize that we had hit the win-ner, who was a 62 to 1 shot! I collected the winnings, and began to split all the winnings for the day…. Of course it was taking a bit of time, since we are splitting up the cash into 9 piles. All of a sudden, my phone rings. As I answer it I realized it was one of the girls who were track side….. “Where are you? We thought that you might have gone home without us?” I was silent for a moment, and then I realized that they did not know that we had won the last race! .I answered “I’m counting our money”… they said “what”… then I told them that we had hit $125. From the other end of the phone

came—“take all the time you need” Oh bye the way…. The newbie picked the horse that won that race! Just to prove….. It’s all luck!

ALL IN ALL…

A day at the races always is fun. We take time to just have fun, laugh a little, and enjoy the day with friends, old and new. It has become a great social event. Please consider joining us on one of our “Race Days”. Promise that there won’t be any dive bombing birds, as we have had a great learning experience.

WE WILL SEE YOU IN THE FALL!

JUNE RECIPE

I just stumbled upon this recipe, and thought that it seemed super easy and has the potential to be really yummy.

This recipe comes from France…. In fact from a French restaurant named “Tatin” hence the name for the desert.

There are only 4 ingredients, so for the most part you should have them on hand. No need to run to the store for some special item.

Good luck with your new adventure, and I hope you enjoy this new recipe!

Please check out the monthly newsletters for information regarding the Sea Pines Women’s Club activities, which will resume in Sep-tember. We would love to see you at any of our activities.

TARTE TATIN

INGREDIENTS;

Dough for one 8 inch pie crust

4 tart apples

1/3 cup butter

2/3 cups sugar

Preheat your over to 400 degrees.

To make filling: peel, quarter, and core 4 tart apples. Then cut them into slices.

Grease an 8 inch flan pan with ½ of the butter. Then sprinkle with ½ of the sugar.

Arrange the apple slices on it, and then sprinkle with the remaining sugar and dot with the remaining butter.

Roll out the dough thinly and cut a neat circle a little bit larger than the flan pan. Place the circle over the apples, tucking the edge in-side the flan pan, and bake in the preheated oven for 25 to 30 minutes or until the dough is cooked and the apples have caramel-ized.

Invert the tart onto a serving plate and serve warm…. Perhaps with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Hope you enjoy!

SEA P INES NEWS

June 1 marks the official start of the hurricane season in the

United States. Last year, Pasco County again dodged a bullet

when Hurricane Michael slammed into the Florida Panhan-

dle, which was recently upgraded to a Level 5 hurricane due

to its destructive power. This reminds us that it can happen

here and we all need to be prepared as much as possible when

the unthinkable happens. It is that time of year for all of us to

go over our hurricane and disaster preparedness before it is

too late.

Personal/Family Preparedness

Know your risk. Know whether you are in anXXXXXXX

evacuation zone and if so, which one.

Develop a plan for sheltering your family whether it is

with friends, family, hurricane shelters, or your own

house. Let your family and friends know where you are

relocating to in case communication infrastructure is

damaged in the storm.

Stock up supplies. Water, non-perishable food, batteries,

toiletries, first aid supplies, medications, cash, and fuel.

Do not forget about extra supplies for your pets too! You

should have enough water (one gallon per person per day)

and food for at least 7 days.

Items for a “go-bag” (such as a duffle bag or suitcase) in-

clude blankets; electrical chargers; games, etc. Consider

obtaining kennels for pets if you do not already have one.

Ensure pet vaccinations and related records are up-to-date.

Home Preparedness

Purchase plywood and fabricate shutters for your win-

dows now. Do not wait until days before the storm when

you will likely not be able to find necessary supplies. If

you already have storm shutters, locate and inspect them

for any necessary repair.

Trim trees, remove dead or damaged trees, pick up and

dispose of all limbs and other debris on or near your prop-

erty. Secure garbage cans, flower pots, lawn furniture,

etc., so they do not become projectiles during a storm.

Obtain sandbags now. Do not wait until everyone else is

trying to do the same thing.

Purchase or inspect your current tarps, tie-downs, and

straps to assist with securing large items in your yard,

like a boat or ATV. Have them ready along with a plan in

case you need it. Pre-planning reduces prep-time.

Purchase or inspect your current equipment (chainsaws,

pole saws, generators, etc.) to make sure they do not re-

quire any maintenance.

Check house for pre-existing damage that could be aggra-

vated during a storm. Consider a roof inspection.

PASCO SHERIFF’S OFFICE NEWSLETTER June 2019

Clear and clean gutters. Seal windows and doors.

If you intend on sheltering your family at your residence,

consider identifying or constructing a safe room.

Financial Preparedness

Review your homeowner’s insurance policy – know there

is typically a 30-day waiting period so the time to obtain

adequate coverage is now. Do not wait for a storm. Re-

view clauses covering damage related to wind, water,

flooding, and specifically hurricanes. Most insurance poli-

cies have a separate hurricane deductible and most do

not cover damage from flooding without separate flood

insurance.

Make copies of and/or protect important documents. Back

-up important electronic files.

Document valuable items. Record serial numbers.
