SRI AGEING POPULATION - BX
31 December 2020
Fund Manager's Comments
Market view
The rebound in European Equity markets initiated in November with investors’ hopes of economic recovery supported by a progressive deployment of the
Covid19 vaccine continued in December after the Brexit agreement between the EU and Great Britain. This last time rally helped the sub-fund and the
MSCI Europe TR index to close the year with a very limited decline.
Over the month, the best performing sectors were a mix of cyclicals (Materials / Consumer Discretionary) and defensives (Real Estate). In contrast, both
Banks and Healthcare declined in December.
Regarding GIS SRI Ageing Population, the Consumers and Pensions & Savings investment pillars delivered positive returns while the Healthcare one
posted a muted but positive performance.
In Consumers, the top contributors over the month mainly operate in the lifestyle and luxury space (within the Ageing Well and Social Status sub-segments
of the portfolio). Adidas rose by 11%, helped by positive comments from its CEO about the year-end trading and market share gains in USA. Moreover,
the group will present early 2021 its new five-year growth plan that is expected to include ambitious targets for the current year. Richemont, up 6%,
continued to perform well, supported by the recovery of the Cartier brand and a promising ecommerce expansion in China thanks to a new joint-venture
with Alibaba and Farfetch. Alongside these names, HelloFresh (newly invested in the Ageing Well sub-segment of the portfolio early-December) jumped
34% after the German meal-kit specialist increased its 2020 guidance and provided outstanding outlook for 2021 with expected sales growth between
20% and 25% at constant exchange rate.
In Pensions & Savings, the Life Insurance sub-segment outperformed the whole investment pillar thanks to its exposure to UK names such as Prudential
and L&G, respectively up 15% and 5%. Both names climbed after EU and UK agreed Brexit trade deal a week before the end of the transition period.
Prudential PLC remains one of our preferred names for the potential recovery in its Asian business (particularly in China) and the de-risking of its US
subsidiary Jackson. In the Asset Management part, Anima bounced 6%, supported by a 2020 profit announcement significantly above analysts’
expectations. The Italian company may be at the center of M&A speculation in the coming months as BPM, its largest shareholder, might play a role in
the Italian banking consolidation.
In Healthcare, despite the sector underperformance in December, selected names in Medical Equipment & Services and Phama helped to display a
positive return. Among the top performers, Korian and Siemens Healthineers rose respectively 12% and 9%. The French leader in nursing homes
announced new transactions with the objective to increase its real asset ownership rate to 25% by end-2021. With the success of the recent share issue,
Korian’s financial strength will fuel geographic expansion and business diversification in the coming months. In Pharma, Merck Kgaa gained 5% and
closed 2020 with the best performance in Pharma (up 35%) thanks to a diversified exposure to Healthcare, Life Sciences and Performance Materials.
The top performers in December were as follows:
- Positive: Prudential, Korian, Adidas, Siemens Healthineers, Ontex
- Negative: Ipsen, Scor, AstraZeneca, Kone, bioMérieux
Portfolio Activity
At the beginning of December, ahead of the Investor Day, we initiated new position in HelloFresh as it was expected to reassure investors about the long
lasting benefits of the consumers’ discovery of the meal kit delivery service and the company’s ability to keep sustaining positive growth, while preserving
profitability. On the opposite side, we progressively reduced our holding in Ontex, where we recognize the upside of a potentially newly announced strategy
to create some momentum in the name, but for which we believe that this is more than compensated by the risks of the managerial transition and M&A.
Lastly, we cut our exposure to Symrise after the group temporarily shut down its production following a cyberattack involving malware intrusion. The
inherent risks attached to cybersecurity are closely monitored in our ESG analysis under our SPICE methodology.
At the end of December, the respective weightings of Consumers, Healthcare and Pension & Savings stood at respectively 44%, 37% and 19%.
Outlook
Ageing population is a structural growth theme supporting above average returns over time. Businesses within our investment pillars of Healthcare,
Pension & Savings and Consumers are expected to grow faster than global GDP over the coming years and to show lower cyclicality. Examples include
travel & leisure, asset management, oncology, incontinence, anti-ageing cosmetics, vitamins and dietary supplements.
