CRUISING LIMITATIONS

Scan constantly for people, objects, and other watercraft. Be alert forconditions that limit your visibility orblock your vision of others.

Operate defensively at safe speedsand keep a safe distance from peo-ple, objects, and other watercraft.

Do not follow directly behind otherboats.

Do not go near others to spray orsplash them with water.

Avoid sharp turns or other maneu-vers that make it hard for others toavoid you or understand where youare going.

Avoid areas with submergedobjects or shallow water.

Operate within your limits and avoidaggressive maneuvers to reducethe risk of loss of control, ejection, and collision.

This is a high-performance boat –not a toy. Sharp turns or jumpingwaves or wakes can increase the

risk of back/spinal injury (paralysis),facial injuries, and broken legs, ankles, and other bones. Do notjump waves or wakes.

Do not operate the boat in roughwater, bad weather, or when visibili-ty is poor; this may lead to an acci-dent causing injury or death. Bealert to the possibility of bad weath-er. Take note of weather forecastsand the prevailing weather condi-tions before setting out in your boat.

Never operate in water that is lessthan 3 ft (90 cm) deep, otherwiseyou increase your chance of hittinga submerged object, which couldresult in injury.

Leave a “float plan” with a responsi-ble person on shore. Tell where youplan to go and when you plan toarrive, and provide a description ofyour boat. Advise this person if yourplans change and also when youarrive to prevent false alarms. Asample float plan is included onpage 6-6.

Attach the engine shut-off cord (lan-yard) to PFD and keep it free fromsteering wheel or other controls sothat the engine stops if the operatoraccidentally leaves the helm.Failure to attach the engine shut-offcord could result in a runaway boatif the operator is ejected.

After operation, remove the engineshut-off cord and the keys to avoidaccidental starting or unauthorizeduse by children or others.

2 Engine Shut-Off Cord with Clip

3 Cord connected to PFD

Scan constantly for swimmers andstay away from swimming areas.Swimmers are hard to see and youcould accidentally hit someone inthe water.

Avoid being hit by another boat! Youshould always take responsibility towatch for other traffic; other boatersmay not be watching for you. If theydo not see you, or you maneuvermore quickly than they expect, yourisk a collision.

Maintain a safe distance from otherboats or watercraft, and also watchfor boats’ ski ropes or fishing lines.Obey the “Rules of the Road” (seepage 1-15), and be sure to checkbehind you before making a turn.

HAZARD INFORMATION

Never start the engine or let it runfor any length of time in an enclosedarea. Exhaust fumes contain carbonmonoxide, a colorless, odorless gasthat may cause death within a shorttime. Always operate the boat in anopen area.

It is also important to have theengines off when anyone is usingthe extended swim step on modelsequipped with one because of thecarbon monoxide in the exhaustgases coming from underneath thestep.

SPORT BOAT CHARACTERISTICS

Jet thrust turns the Sport Boat.Pulling the throttle levers completelyback to idle produces only minimumthrust. If you are traveling at speedsabove trolling, you will have rapidlydecreasing ability to steer withoutthrottle. You may still have someturning ability immediately afterpulling the throttle levers back toidle, but once the engine slowsdown, the Sport Boat will no longerrespond to steering wheel input untilyou apply throttle again or you reacha trolling speed. Practice turning in

an open area without obstructionsuntil you have a good feel for themaneuver.

Yamaha Sport Boats are water-jetpropelled. The pumps are directlyconnected to the engines. Thismeans that the jet thrust will pro-duce some movement wheneverthe engines are running. The SportBoat has a “neutral” position, butsince the Sport Boat is always pro-ducing thrust while the engines arerunning, some forward or reversemovement may occur.

Do not use the reverse function toslow down or stop the boat as itcould cause you to lose control, beejected, or impact the steeringwheel or other parts of the boat. This could increase the risk of seri-ous injury. It could also damage theshift mechanism.

Reverse can be used to slow downor stop during slow speed maneu-vering, such as when docking. Oncethe engine is idling, shift to reverseand gradually increase enginespeed. Make sure that there are noobstacles or people behind youbefore shifting into reverse.

Keep away from the intake grateswhile the engine is on. Items suchas long hair, loose clothing, or PFDstraps can become entangled inmoving parts resulting in severeinjury or drowning.

Stop the engines and remove theclip from the engine shut-off switchbefore removing any debris orweeds, which may have collectedaround the jet intakes.

Never insert any object into the jetthrust nozzle while the engine isrunning. Severe injury or deathcould result from coming in contactwith the rotating parts of the jetpump.

NIGHT OPERATION

When using your Sport Boat beforedawn or after dusk, you must haveboth bow and stern lights operating. When at anchor in the dark, thestern light must be lit. See page 2-12 for instructions.

WATER-SKIING

You can use the Sport Boat to tow awater skier, using the tow cleat provid-ed.

It is the boat operator’s responsibility tobe alert to the safety of the water-skierand others. Know and follow all stateand local water-skiing regulations ineffect for the waters in which you will beoperating.

The following are some important con-siderations for minimizing risks whilewater-skiing.

The skier should wear an approvedPFD, preferably a brightly coloredone so boat operators can see theskier.

The skier should wear protectiveclothing. Severe internal injuries canoccur if water is forced into bodycavities as a result of falling into thewater or while reboarding. Normalswimwear does not adequately pro-tect against forceful water entry intorectum or vagina. The skier shouldwear a wetsuit bottom or clothingthat provides equivalent protection.Such clothing includes thick, tightly

woven, sturdy and snug fittingapparel such as denim, but does notinclude spandex or similar fabricslike those used in bicycle shorts.

A second person should be onboard as a spotter to watch theskier; in most states it is required bylaw. Let the skier direct the opera-tor’s control of speed and directionwith hand signals. The port-sideseat swivels for a backward-facingobserver. Be sure the seat is lockedin place (pg. 2-13) before gettingunderway.

When preparing to pull a skier, oper-ate the boat at the slowest possiblespeed until the boat is well awayfrom the skier and slack in thetowrope is taken up. Make sure thatthe rope is not looped around any-thing.

After checking that the skier is readyand that there is no traffic or otherobstacles, apply enough throttle toraise the skier.

Make smooth, wide turns. The SportBoat is capable of very sharp turns, which could exceed the abilities ofthe skier. Keep the skier at least50m (150 ft), about twice the dis-tance of a standard towrope, awayfrom any potential hazard.

Be alert to the hazard of the towropehandle snapping back at the boatwhen the skier falls or is unable toget up on the skis.

RULES OF THE ROADYour Yamaha Sport Boat is legally con-sidered a powerboat. Operation of theSport Boat must be in accordance withthe rules and regulations governing thewaterway on which it is used.

Just as there are rules that apply whenyou are driving on streets and high-ways, there are waterway rules thatapply when you are operating yourboat. These rules are used internation-ally, and are also enforced by theUnited States Coast Guard and localagencies. You should be aware ofthese rules, and follow them wheneveryou encounter another vessel on thewater.

Several sets of rules prevail accordingto geographic location, but are all basi-cally the same as the InternationalRules of the Road. The rules presentedhere in this Owner’s/Operator’s Manualare condensed, and have been provid-ed for your convenience only. Consultyour local U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliaryor Department of Motor Vehicles for acomplete set of rules governing thewaters in which you will be operatingyour boat.

STEERING AND SAILING RULES

Whenever two vessels on the watermeet one another, one vessel has theright-of-way; it is called the “stand-on”vessel. The vessel that does not havethe right-of-way is called the “give-way”or “burdened” vessel. These rulesdetermine which vessel has the right-of-way, and what each vessel shoulddo.

Stand-On VesselThe vessel with the right-of-way hasthe duty to continue its course andspeed, except to avoid an immediatecollision. When you maintain yourdirection and speed, the other vesselwill be able to determine how best toavoid you.

Give-Way VesselThe vessel which does not have theright-of-way has the duty to take posi-tive and timely action to stay out of theway of the stand-on vessel. Normally, you should not cross in front of the ves-sel with the right-of-way. You shouldslow down or change directions brieflyand pass behind the other vessel. Youshould always move in such a way thatthe operator of the other vessel cansee what you are doing.

The General Prudential Rule regardingthe right-of-way is that if a collisionappears unavoidable, neither boat hasthe right-of-way. Both boats must avoidthe collision.

In other words, follow the standardrules except when a collision will occurunless both vessels try to avoid eachother. If that is the case, both vesselsbecome give-way vessels.

RULES WHEN ENCOUNTERING VESSELS

There are three main situations thatyou may encounter with other vesselswhich could lead to a collision unlessthe Steering Rules are followed:

Meeting: you are approaching anothervessel head-on

Crossing: you are traveling acrossanother vessel's path

Overtaking: you are passing or beingpassed by another vessel

In the following illustration, your boat isin the center. You should give the right-of-way to any vessels shown in thewhite area (you are the give-way ves-sel). Any vessels in the shaded areamust yield to you (they are the give-way vessels). Both you and the meet-ing vessel must alter course to avoideach other.

MeetingIf you are meeting another power ves-sel head on, and are close enough torun the risk of collision, neither of youhas the right-of-way! Both of youshould alter course to avoid an acci-dent. You should keep the other vesselon your port (left) side. This rule doesnot apply if both of you will clear oneanother if you continue on your setcourse and speed.

CrossingWhen two power-driven vessels arecrossing each other's path closeenough to run the risk of collision, thevessel which has the other on the star-board (right) side must keep out of theway of the other. If the other vessel ison your starboard (right) side, you mustkeep out of its way; you are the give-way vessel. If the other vessel is onyour port (left) side, remember that youshould maintain course and direction, provided the other vessel gives you theright-of-way as it should.

SAFETY INFORMATION 1

1-17

OvertakingIf you are passing another vessel, youare the give-way vessel. This meansthat the other vessel is expected tomaintain its course and speed. Youmust stay out of its way until you areclear of it. Likewise, if another vessel ispassing you, you should maintain yourspeed and direction so that the othervessel can steer itself around you.

OTHER SPECIAL SITUATIONSThere are three other rules you shouldbe aware of when operating your boataround other vessels.

Narrow Channels and BendsWhen navigating in narrow channels, you should keep to the right when it issafe and practical to do so. If the oper-ator of a power-driven vessel is prepar-ing to go around a bend that mayobstruct the view of other water ves-sels, the operator should sound a pro-longed blast of four to six seconds onthe horn. If another vessel is aroundthe bend, it too should sound the horn.Even if no reply is heard, however, thevessel should still proceed around thebend with caution.

Fishing Vessel Right-of-WayAll vessels fishing with nets, lines ortrawls are considered to be “fishingvessels” under the International Rules.Vessels with trolling lines are not con-sidered fishing vessels. Fishing ves-sels have the right-of-way regardlessof position. Fishing vessels cannot, however, impede the passage of othervessels in narrow channels.

Sailing Vessel Right-of-WaySailing vessels should normally begiven the right-of-way. The exceptionsto this are:

1. When the sailing vessel is overtak-ing the power-driven vessel, thepower-driven vessel has the right-of-way.

2. Sailing vessels should keep clear ofany fishing vessel.

3. In a narrow channel, a sailing ves-sel should not hamper the safe pas-sage of a power-driven vessel thatcan navigate only in such a chan-nel.

Reading Buoys and Other MarkersThe waters of the United States aremarked for safe navigation by the later-al system of buoyage. Simply put, buoys and markers have an arrange-ment of shapes, colors, numbers andlights to show which side of the buoy aboater should pass on when navigatingin a particular direction. The markingson these buoys are oriented from theperspective of being entered from sea-ward (the boater is going towards theharbor). Red buoys are passed on yourstarboard (right) side when proceedingfrom open water into port, and blackbuoys are to your port (left) side. Aneasy way to remember the meaning ofthe colors is the phrase “red rightreturning.” When navigating out of theharbor, your position with respect to thebuoys should be reversed; red buoysshould be to port and black buoys tostarboard.

Many bodies of water used by boatersare entirely within the boundaries of aparticular state. The Uniform StateWaterway Marking System has beendevised for these waters.

This system uses buoys and signs withdistinctive shapes and colors to showregulatory or advisory information. These markers are white with black let-ters and orange borders. They signifyspeed zones, restricted areas, dangerareas, and general information.

Remember, markings may vary by geo-graphic location. Always consult localboating authorities before riding yourboat in unfamiliar waters.

ACCIDENT REPORTING

Boat operators are required by law tofile a Boating Accident Report with theirstate boating law enforcement agencyif their boat is involved in any of the fol-lowing accidents:1. There is loss of life or probable loss

of life.2. There is personal injury which

requires medical attention beyondfirst aid.

3. There is damage to boats or otherproperty which exceeds $500.00.

4. There is complete loss of a boat.

Contact local law enforcement person-nel if a report is necessary.

ENJOY YOUR SPORTBOAT RESPONSIBLY

You share the areas you enjoy whenoperating your boat with others andwith nature. So your enjoymentincludes a responsibility to treat theseother people, and the lands, waters, and wildlife with respect and courtesy.

Whenever and wherever you are boat-ing, think of yourself as the guest ofthose around you. Remember, forexample, that the sound of your boatmay be music to you, but it could bejust noise to others. And the excitingsplash of your wake can make wavesothers won't enjoy. Avoid riding close toshoreline homes and waterfowl nestingareas or other wildlife areas, and keepa respectful distance from fishermen, other boats, swimmers, and populatedbeaches. When travel in areas likethese is unavoidable, operate slowlyand obey all laws.

Remember that pollution can be harm-ful to the environment. Do not refuel oradd oil where a spill could cause dam-age to nature. And keep your surround-ings pleasant for the people and wildlifethat share the waterways: don't litter!

When you go boating responsibly, withrespect and courtesy for others, youhelp ensure that our waterways stayopen for the enjoyment of a variety ofrecreational opportunities.

OPERATION OF CONTROLS AND

OTHER FUNCTIONS

STEERING

➀ Steering wheel

Your Sport Boat can be steered by turn-ing the steering wheel the same direc-tion you wish to travel, to the right orleft. When the wheel is turned, theangle of the jet (output) nozzles at therear of the craft is changed, and thechange in direction of the nozzleschanges the direction of the boataccordingly. Since the strength of thejet thrust determines the speed anddirection of a turn, the throttle mustalways be opened above idle whenattempting a turn, except at trollingspeed.

Because boats steer from the stern(rear), the stern of the boat swings outin the opposite direction of your turn. Ifyou turn to the starboard (right), forexample, the stern of the boat willswing to the left. Keep this in mindwhen navigating near a person in thewater, such as a down skier, or anobstacle, such as a dock.

TILT LEVER

The tilt lever 1 is located under thesteering wheel and is used to adjust thetilt of the steering wheel. There arethree positions.

To adjust the tilt, pull the lever up, andthen move the steering wheel up ordown to the desired position. The leverwill lock into place when the wheel ismoved into one of the three availablepositions.

• Never touch the tilt lever duringoperation, otherwise the steeringwheel could suddenly changeposition, which may lead to anaccident.

• Be sure the steering wheel islocked in position after adjust-ment. If the steering wheel is notlocked in position, it may sudden-ly change position during opera-tion, which may lead to anaccident.

ENGINE SHUT-OFF SWITCH

The clip on the end of the engine shut-off cord must be attached to the engineshut-off switch for the engines to run.The cord must be attached to a secureplace on the operator’s personal flota-tion device (PFD). Should the operatorfall overboard or leave the helm, thecord will pull out the clip, stopping igni-tion to both engines. This will preventthe boat from running away underpower.

➀ Engine shut-off switch

➁ Clip

➂ Engine shut-off cord (lanyard)

Always attach the engine shut-offcord to your personal flotationdevice (PFD) BEFORE startingthe engines. Failure to attach thecord could result in a runawayboat if the operator is ejected.

Do not attach the cord to clothingthat could tear loose. Do not routethe cord in such a way that itcould become entangled, pre-venting it from functioning.

Avoid accidentally pulling thecord during normal operation.Once the engines have stoppedyou have no steering control ofthe boat which could result in anaccident. Also, without enginepower, the boat could slow rapid-ly from planing speed. This couldcause people and objects in theboat to be thrown forward, whichcould cause injury.

MAIN SWITCHESThere is a main switch for each engine. The main switches control the ignitionand electrical circuits as follows:

THROTTLE LEVERS

Throttle lever, port (left) engineThrottle lever, starboard (right) engineIdleFull speed

Before starting the engine, alwayscheck the operation of each throttlelever. It should move smoothlythrough its full range of operation.Otherwise, there could be loss ofcontrol and an accident.

A separate throttle lever controls eachengine. In normal operation the throttlelevers are moved together. Moving thethrottle levers forward increases enginespeed. Move both throttles to the idleposition before using the shift lever.

SHIFT LEVER

SEVERE INJURY OR DEATH MAYRESULT IF YOU IGNORE ANY OFTHE FOLLOWING. Check throttle, steering, and shift

lever for proper operation beforestarting the engines.

 Shift into neutral before startingengines.

Put throttle levers in idle positionbefore shifting.

Make sure there are no people orobjects behind the boat beforestarting or shifting into Reverse.

When operating in Reverse, goslowly. Do not open the throttlemore than half. Otherwise, theboat may become unstable, which could result in loss of con-trol and an accident.

Do not shift into Reverse whiletraveling at planing speeds. Lossof control, boat swamping, ordamage to the boat could occur.

NOTE: This Sport Boat is equippedwith a mechanical interlock that pre-vents shift lever movement unless boththrottle levers are put in the idle posi-tion first. It also has a start-in-gear pro-tection neutral switch that prevents theengines from cranking if the shift leveris not in Neutral.

ForwardNeutralReverse

The shift lever controls the direction oftravel.

The drive line on the Sport Boat isdirect drive, so jet thrust is alwaysbeing produced while the engines arerunning. The direction of the boat iscontrolled by jet pump gates whichdirect the flow of the jet thrust as fol-lows:

ForwardThe jet pump gates are lifted all theway up. All jet thrust is to the rear, which moves the boat forward.

NeutralThe jet pump gates are dropped downpart way over the jet nozzles. Some jetthrust is to the rear and some jet thrustis redirected forward. This balance ofthrust acts like “neutral” to keep theboat from moving.

Leave the throttles in the idle posi-tion when Neutral is selected. Theboat will start moving as if it was inForward or Reverse if engine speedis increased above idle in Neutral.

OVERHEAT WARNING SYSTEM

The engine has an overheat warningdevice. If either engine starts to over-heat, the engine speed of the affectedengine will be limited to 3000 rpm.

Each engine is equipped with cooling-water pilot outlets 1 on the starboardside of the hull. Check that watercomes out of the outlet while theengine is running, particularly whileapplying throttle. If you do not see anywater at the outlet, cooling water maynot be circulating in the engine.

NOTE: If water cooling passages onthe engines are dry, it will take about 20seconds for water to reach the pilot out-lets after starting.

If water is not circulating, somethingmay be clogging the jet intake grate.Refer to the Jet Pump Clean-Out pro-cedures on page 5-5 for further infor-mation.

If the cause of overheating cannotbe found and corrected, take specialprecautions to avoid major enginedamage while you return to shore.

SINGLE ENGINE OVERHEATING —Shut off the overheating engine anduse the properly running engine toreturn to shore. Operate at “no-wake” speed to prevent water fromflooding the non-operating enginethrough the cooling water intake.

BOTH ENGINES OVERHEATING —If getting a tow from another vesselis not possible, operate bothengines just slightly above idlewhile you return to shore. If you canbe towed, refer to “Towing the SportBoat” on page 5-3.

OPERATION 3FUEL AND OIL

GASOLINE

Use regular unleaded 87 octane (R+M÷ 2) gasoline.

GASOLINE AND ITS VAPORS AREHIGHLY FLAMMABLE AND EXPLO-SIVE!

Do not smoke when refueling, and keep away from sparks, flames, or other sources of igni-tion.

Stop engines and turn ignitionkeys to Off before refueling.

Refuel in a well-ventilated area. Ifthe Sport Boat is in the water, besure it is securely moored to thefueling dock. All passengersmust be out of the boat duringrefueling.

Take care not to spill gasoline. Ifgasoline spills, wipe it up imme-diately with dry rags. Alwaysproperly dispose of gasoline-soaked rags.

Avoid overfilling the fuel tank.Stop filling when the fuel leveljust reaches the bottom of thefiller tube. Do not fill up the fillertube because fuel expands as itwarms up and could overflow.

Tighten the filler cap securelyafter refueling.

If you should swallow somegasoline, inhale a lot of gasoline

vapor, or get gasoline in youreyes, get immediate medicalattention.

If any gasoline spills onto yourskin, immediately wash with soapand water. Change clothing ifgasoline spills on it.

Use only fresh gasoline that hasbeen stored in clean containers.

GasoholThere are two types of gasohol: gaso-hol containing ethanol and that con-taining methanol. Gasohol containingethanol can be used if ethanol contentdoes not exceed 10% and the fuelmeets minimum octane ratings.Gasohol containing methanol is notrecommended by Yamaha because itcan cause fuel system damage orengine performance problems.

Ring Free Fuel AdditiveGasoline is a precise blend of many dif-ferent substances, each chosen to givec e r t a i n characteristics. Gasol ineblends have been changing in recentyears in response to concerns aboutpollution and resulting emissions regu-lations. One of the most obviouschanges has been the elimination oflead from fuels.

As gasoline has changed, the amountof additives such as aromatics andoxygenates has increased. Theseadditives are important for the enginesin passenger cars, but they can havedetrimental effects in marine engines.

While many additives available mayreduce deposits, Yamaha recommendsthe use of Ring Free Fuel Additive, available from your Yamaha dealer.Ring Free has repeatedly proven itsability to clean combustion depositsfrom inside the engine, notably in thecritical piston-ring-land area, and fuelsystem components. Follow productlabeling for use instructions.

ENGINE OILRecommended oil: YAMALUBE 4-W. IfYAMALUBE 4-W is not available, another 10W-30 4-cycle engine oil withan API rating of SE, SF, SG, SH, or SJ.

FILLING

FILLING THE GASOLINE TANK

Open the fuel tank filler cap, and slow-ly add fuel to the fuel tank. Be carefulnot to spill fuel or overfill the tank.

Stop filling when the fuel just becomesvisible in the bottom of the filler tube.Do not “top off” the tank, becausegasoline could spill out. Be sure totighten the cap securely.

Be careful when refueling. Avoidgetting water or other contaminantsin the fuel tank. Contaminated fuelcan cause poor running or enginedamage.

Fuel tank capacity: 50 US gal (189 lit)

ENGINE OIL LEVELCheck the oil level in both enginesbefore each use. Check the oil on eachengine when cold to be sure there isenough oil to run the engine.

Be sure the engine has enough oilbut do not overfill. If there is too lit-tle oil, the engine can be damaged. Ifthere is too much oil, the air filtercan become saturated with oil, per-manently damaging the filter andreducing engine performance.Follow the checking procedurecarefully.

NOTE: • Each engine has an oil-tank sys-

tem. It is normal for the oil level tovary depending upon whether theengine is cold or at operating tem-perature.

• Adding 1 US qt. (0.95 l) of oil willraise the oil level on the dipstick byapproximately 2.2 in. (5.6 mm).

To check oil, be sure the boat is level, either in the water or on the trailer.Open the engine compartment bypulling up on the two latches locatedunder the front of the rear seat.

Cold Engine Check

1) Remove the oil tank filler cap 1,wipe the dipstick with a clean rag,and then screw the cap on securely.Remove the cap again and checkthe oil level.

2) If the level is at least at the minimumlevel “L” mark 2 on the dipstick, butless than the “F” mark 3, the enginecan be operated.

3) If oil must be added, add justenough oil to raise the level to the“L” mark. Adding more oil could

result in an overfilled engine once itwarms up.

4) Repeat for the other engine.

Warm Engine Check

1) Be sure the engine is warmed tooperating temperature.

NOTE: The engines are at the properoperating temperature after they havebeen run for 5 minutes or more at 7,000rpm or above and then at a trollingspeed for 2~3 minutes. If the boat is onthe trailer, run the engine with the flushattachment at an idle speed for 6 to 8minutes, or at least 13 minutes if airtemperature is 59° F (15°C) or colder.

2) Remove the oil tank filler cap 1,wipe the dipstick with a clean rag,and then screw the cap on securely.Remove the cap again and checkthe oil level.

3) The oil level should be between theminimum and maximum levelmarks. If the level is below the “L”mark 2, then add only enough oil toraise the level above the “L” markbut never above the “F” mark 3.

4) Repeat for the other engine.

If the level is above the “F” mark, theengine is overfilled. Consult aYamaha dealer to have oil extractedfrom the engine to avoid damage.

through the large drain hole in thedeck. A one-way check valve in thedrain prevents water from travelingback to the deck during mooring orwhile moving in reverse.

Bilge Pump –

Your Sport Boat is equipped with adrainage system that channels waterthat enters the boat from the storagecompartments to the bilge under theengine compartment. When the bilgepump is turned on (see page 2-11), thepump will sense when there is exces-sive water in the bilge and will auto-matically drain most of it through theoutlet 1. For normal operation, turnthe bilge pump switch on during boatuse and turn it off when leaving theboat.

If the Sport Boat is to be left in thewater after use, leave the bilgepump switch in the ON position. Thepump will activate if needed to drainany water accumulating in the bilge.

Drain Plug –

A drain plug is located at the center ofthe stern to allow more complete drain-ing when the boat is removed from thewater. Engine Compartment and Fuel Compartment Drain Plug –

Water will not normally enter theengine compartment or fuel compart-ment areas during operation. If it does, open the drain plugs 3 and allowwater to drain. Also open the enginecompartment plug when flushing theengine area with fresh water after saltwater operation.

● Excessive water in the enginecompartment bilge can splashinto the carburetor and engine. This could cause engine damage.

● Be sure all drain plugs are tight-ened before operating your SportBoat.

Gasoline and its vapors are highlyflammable and explosive. If a fuel ora fuel/water mix drains from the fueltank compartment drain or is foundin the engine compartment, wipe itup immediately with dry rags. Do notoperate the boat until the source ofthe fuel leak is found and corrected.

Cooling-Water Pilot OutletsCheck that water comes out from thepilot outlets while engine is running inthe water. Refer to page 2-10 for cor-rect operation of the device.

NOTE: It may take up to 20 secondsfor water to reach the pilot outlets whenfirst launching the boat. The amountand force of the exiting water will varywith engine rpm.

A continuous flow of water from thepilot hole shows that water is flow-ing through the engine cooling pas-sages. If water is not flowing out ofthe pilot hole during operation, donot continue to run the engines.Overheating and serious damagecould occur. See Overheat WarningSystem, page 2-10, for more infor-mation.

SEVERE INJURY OR DEATH MAYRESULT IF YOU IGNORE ANY OFTHE FOLLOWING:

Before operating your SportBoat, become familiar with allcontrols. Consult your Yamahadealer about any control or func-tion you do not fully understand.

Attach the engine shut-off switchcord to your personal flotationdevice before operating. Failureto attach cord could result in arunaway boat if operator isejected.

Check throttle, steering and shiftlever for proper operation beforestarting the engine.

Shift into Neutral before startingengines. Put throttle levers in idleposition before shifting.

Never start the engine or let it runany length of time in an enclosedarea. Exhaust fumes contain car-bon monoxide, a colorless, odor-less gas that may cause loss ofconsciousness and death withina short time. Always operate theboat in an open area.

1) Always make sure the boat islaunched and used in waters thatare free from weeds and debris, andat least 3 ft (90 cm) deep.

Never operate in water that is lessthan 3 ft (90 cm) deep. You increaseyour chance of hitting an underwa-ter obstacle. You could be injured.Pebbles or sand can also be suckedinto the jet (water) intake, damagingthe impeller.

There is a hull drain plug at the bot-tom of the stern in the center. Besure it is securely tightened beforelaunching the Sport Boat.

Never turn the ignition key to “Start”while the engine is running. Do notkeep the starter motor running formore than 5 seconds. If the enginedoes not start after 5 seconds ofcranking, release the starter button.Wait at least 15 seconds before try-ing to start the engine again. If thestarter motor is engaged continu-ously for more than 5 seconds, thebattery will be quickly discharged, and it will be impossible to start theengine. The starter motor may alsobe damaged if it is engaged continu-ously for more than 5 seconds.

NOTE:

Be sure the shift lever is put in theNeutral position or the starter motorwill not operate.

On this boat, the engines are con-nected directly to the drive unit.Starting either engine generatessome thrust immediately. Onlyenough throttle should be applied tokeep the engine at a fast enoughidle to stay running.

Do not operate the Sport Boat withjust one engine running. Severeengine damage could resultbecause water can flood the non-operating engine through the cool-ing water intake. If single-engineoperation is unavoidable, operatethe boat at a “no wake” speed only.

STOPPING THE ENGINES

To stop the engine, return the throttlelevers to the idle position, then turn themain switches to “Off.” The enginescan also be stopped by pulling theengine stop switch lanyard.

Once the engine has stopped, youhave NO STEERING CONTROL overthe boat. You could collide withanother boat, a dock, or otherobstacle.

NOTE:

Remove the ignition keys and theengine stop switch lanyard if theboat will be left unattended.

Stopping the engines immediatelyafter operating at high rpm is notrecommended. Let the engines cooloff at idle or low speed for a fewminutes first.

DRIVING YOURSPORT BOAT

GETTING TO KNOW YOURSPORT BOAT

Operating your Sport Boat requiresskills acquired through practice over aperiod of time. Take the time to learnthe basic techniques well beforeattempting more difficult maneuvers.

Boating with your new Sport Boat canbe a very enjoyable activity, providingyou with hours of pleasure. But it isessential to familiarize yourself with theoperation of the Sport Boat to achievethe skill necessary to enjoy boatingsafely. Before operating this SportBoat, read this Owner’s Manual, theOperation Instruction Card, and allWarning and Caution labels on theboat. Pay particular attention to thesafety information in Chapter 1. Readall warning and caution labels on yourSport Boat.

This Sport Boat is designed to carryone operator and up to nine passen-gers, as long as the total weight of peo-ple and cargo does not exceed 1800 lb(816 kg). Never have more than tenpeople in the boat.

LEARNING TO OPERATE YOURSPORT BOAT

Before boating, always perform thePre-Operation Checks listed on page3-4. The short time spent checking themachine's condition will reward youwith added safety and a more reliableSport Boat.

Know and follow U.S. Coast Guard, state, and local laws when operatingyour Sport Boat.

Select a wide area to learn in, wherevisibility is good and other boat traffic islight. Keep the proper distance fromother boats and vehicles. Do not oper-ate where people are swimming.

Always attach the engine stop switchlanyard to your personal flotationdevice before operating.

You and all other passengers mustalways wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved personal flotation devicewhen riding in the Sport Boat. Youshould consider wearing water shoes, eye protection, gloves, and other pro-tective apparel. Water sports increaseyour risk of injury from contact withyour boat, other vessels, docks, rocks,or coral.

A water-skier should wear protectiveclothing. Severe internal injuries canoccur if water is forced into body cavi-ties as a result of falling into the wateror while reboarding. Normal swimweardoes not adequately protect againstforceful water entry into rectum or vagi-na. The skier should wear a wetsuitbottom or clothing that provides equiv-alent protection. Such clothing includesthick, tightly woven, sturdy and snug fit-ting apparel such as denim, but doesnot include spandex or similar fabricslike those used in bicycle shorts.

Grip the wheel firmly and keep bothfeet on the deck when driving the SportBoat.

3-18

TURNING THE SPORT BOAT

Steering control depends on the com-bination of steering wheel position andthe amount of throttle.

Water sucked in through the intakegrate is pressurized by the impeller inthe jet pump. As the pressurized wateris expelled from the pump through thejet thrust nozzle, it creates thrust tomove and steer the Sport Boat. Thehigher the engine speed, the morethrust is produced.

The amount of jet thrust, in addition tothe position of the steering wheel, determines how sharply you turn.

A. More throttle produces high thrust,so the Sport Boat will turn moresharply.

B. Less throttle produces low thrust, sothe Sport Boat will turn more gradu-ally.

C. Pulling the throttle levers complete-ly back to idle produces only mini-mum thrust. If you are traveling atspeeds above trolling, you will haverapidly decreasing ability to steerwithout throttle. You may still havesome turning ability immediatelyafter pulling the throttle levers backto idle, but once the engine slowsdown, the Sport Boat will no longerrespond to steering wheel input untilyou apply throttle again or youreach a trolling speed.

At trolling speed, the Sport Boat canbe turned gradually by steeringwheel position alone using just theamount of thrust available at engineidle.

D. If the engines are stopped, there isno thrust. The Sport Boat will gostraight even though the steeringwheel is turned.

YOU NEED THROTTLE TO STEER.

Do not pull the throttle leversback to idle when trying to steeraway from objects – you needthrottle to steer.

Be sure passengers are holdingon before making turns. Anunprepared passenger could losebalance and fall.

BOATING WITH PASSENGERS

When one or more passengers are onboard, the boat may handle differently,so operating it requires a higher degreeof skill.

Remember: Your Sport Boat isdesigned for one operator and up tonine passengers only. Never havemore than ten people in the Sport Boat.Passengers should sit so the weight inthe boat is balanced from side-to-sideand bow-to-stern as much as possible. If the passenger seat in front of thehelm is used, be sure the operator’sview ahead is not obstructed.

Passengers must sit in one of the seatsand hold onto the grips while puttingboth feet on the deck.

When passengers are on board, make sure they are seated and hold-ing on before you start to accelerate. An unprepared passenger couldlose balance and fall.

BOARDING FROM THE WATER

Severe internal injuries can occur ifwater is forced into body cavities asa result of being near the jet thrustnozzles.

Do not board from the rear, useswim platform, or swim behindboat if engines are running.

Stay away from the back of theboat when engines are running.

STOPPING

The Sport Boat is not equipped with aseparate braking system. It is stoppedby water resistance after the throttlelevers are moved back to idle. From fullspeed, the Sport Boat stops in approx-imately 345 ft (105 m) after the throttleis moved back to idle. The stopping dis-tance varies depending on grossweight, water surface conditions, andwind direction. The stated straight-linestopping distance should be used for areference. The boat slows down assoon as the throttle levers are returnedto idle but will coast for a distancebefore fully stopping. If you are not sureyou can stop in time before hitting anobstacle, apply throttle and turn inanother direction.

You will lose steering control if youcompletely pull the throttle leversback to idle.

DOCKING1) Make sure no obstructions, boats or

swimmers are close to the SportBoat. Come to a stop before youreach the dock.

2) Notice how wind and water currentsare affecting boat movement as youattach your mooring lines and fenders.

3) Approach the dock at idle speed.Use reverse as necessary duringslow speed maneuvering to helpcontrol speed and direction.Position the boat according to windand water conditions.

Do not use your hand, arm, or otherpart of your body to try to keep theboat from hitting the dock. Youcould be injured if the boat pushesagainst the dock.

Wind or current pushing boat awayfrom dock:Slowly approach the dock at about a45° angle. Secure the bow to the dock, then use engine thrust or a boat hookto gently move the stern to the dock.

Wind or current pushing boattoward dock:

Slowly maneuver to a shallow angleand allow the boat to move toward thedock.

No wind or current:Approach the dock at a shallow angle.Secure the bow to the dock, then useengine thrust or a boat hook to gentlymove the stern to the dock.

LEAVING A DOCK

Because boats steer from the stern, the stern first moves in the directionopposite your desired turn. It is espe-cially important to understand thischaracteristic when leaving a dock. Ifyou simply turn the wheel to steer thebow away from the dock, as you wouldwhen driving a car out of a parkingspace, you will drive the stern of theboat into the dock. Following is a basicmaneuvering technique which can beused in most circumstances.

1) With engines idling and the bow stillmoored to the dock, turn the steer-ing wheel toward the dock. This willstart to move the stern of the boataway from the dock.

2) When the stern is out a few feet, release the bow mooring then steerin the direction you want the bow tomove. Open the throttle slightly andbegin to move away from the dock.

BEACHING

1) Make sure no obstructions, boats orswimmers are near the beach.

2) Approach the beach slowly and stopthe engines when the water is about3 ft (90 cm) deep. Remember: turn-ing is impossible with the enginestopped.

3) Get out of the boat and pull the bowup on the beach.

4) When leaving the beach, push theboat out into water that is at least3 ft (90 cm) deep before starting theengines.

● Small pebbles, sand, seaweed, and other debris can be ingestedinto the jet intake and impair ordamage the impeller. Always stopthe engines before beaching theboat. Be sure the boat is in water3 ft (90 cm) deep before startingthe engines again.

● Do not beach the boat on rockybeaches. The hull gelcoat andexposed pump housings can bedamaged.

● Pay attention to shifts in tides.Beaching at high tide may makeit impossible to re-launch theboat if the tide recedes.

ANCHORING

Always anchor from the bow.Anchoring from the stern will makethe boat unsteady. A strong currentcan pull a stern-anchored boatunderwater.

Select an anchor appropriate for yourboat and water conditions. A “danforth”(or fluke) type anchor is suitable formost applications; your dealer can helpyou choose an anchor.

1) Make sure the anchor line is secure-ly tied to the anchor and to the boweye.

2) Move the boat to the spot where youwant to lower the anchor, headingthe boat into the wind or current.Stop the boat, then lower the anchoruntil it hits bottom.

3) While keeping tension on the line, slowly back up the boat until youhave let out line that is 4 to 6 timesthe depth of the water. For example,if you are anchoring in 10 feet ofwater, let out 40 to 60 feet of line.Secure the line.

4) Pull on the line to be sure theanchor is holding. Also, periodicallycheck your boat’s position againstthe shoreline to make sure it is notdrifting and dragging the anchor.Reset it if necessary.

5) To pull in (“weigh”) the anchor, startthe engines and move forward, keeping tension on the line as youpull it in. When the anchor line isstraight up and down, pull hard to liftthe anchor from the bottom material.

6) If the anchor is stuck on the bottom, try this: Let out a few feet of anchorline and secure the line to the boat, again. Slowly maneuver the boataround the anchor until the anchorpulls loose. Keep the line taut duringthis procedure.

CROSSING WAKES AND SWELLS

You will not always have flat, smoothwater. There will be swells, wakes fromother boats, etc.

The best way to cross wakes andswells is with the least jolt to you andthe boat. Small swells are not as diffi-cult to cross as larger swells or wakes.Crossing a sharp wake gives more of ajolt than a broad swell.

To cross a wake or swell, change yourspeed and choose the angle at whichyou cross the wake or swell. Usually, aslower speed and “quartering” thewake (crossing at an angle) will reducethe jolt.

Two other things you may notice. Thefirst is that crossing a group of wakesor swells is not as easy or smooth ascrossing just one wake. The second isthat when you quarter the wake orswell the boat will try to steer awayfrom the wake or swell. When crossingat a 45° angle, you may not notice this, but at a smaller angle, say 10°, it canbe very strong. Be prepared to steerand balance as necessary.

POST-OPERATIONCHECKS

POST-OPERATION CHECKS

These post-operation procedures aredeveloped to help preserve the long-term appearance and reliability of yourSport Boat. Perform these proceduresas soon as possible after the boat isloaded back on the trailer after theday’s use.

Some owners plan to moor their boatseasonally, rather than keeping it onthe trailer between uses. The proce-dures described in this section may notbe possible if your Sport Boat ismoored in the water. Boats which aremoored will require periodic removalfrom the water to clean the hull and jetpump area. The frequency of this main-tenance will depend upon whether thewater is salt or fresh, as well as otherlocal water conditions.

Leaving the boat in the water forextended periods will accelerate therate of normal deterioration of thejet pump components and hull fin-ish. Stray electrical voltage in thewater, marine organisms, and salt-water corrosion are a few of the con-ditions that can adversely affect thelife of many Sport Boat compo-nents.

1) After putting the Sport Boat on thetrailer, flush cooling system on eachengine to prevent the cooling sys-tem from clogging up with salt, sand, or dirt. Refer to page 4-1 forthe cooling system flushing proce-dure.

2) Drain residual water from theexhaust system by starting theengine then alternately pushing thethrottle lever up to half throttle andback for 10 to 15 seconds.

Never run the engine at full throttleor for more than 15 seconds whilethe boat is out of the water. Theengine may overheat and/or seize.

3) Wash down the hull, helm, and bothjet drive units with fresh water.

4) Open the rear platform hatch, andcheck for any water pooled on top ofthe clean-out port caps. If water isfound, remove the caps, let waterdrain, then reinstall the caps. SeePage 5-5 for more information.

NOTE: This boat is equipped with anelectric bilge pump that automaticallyremoves excess water from the bilgewhile you are underway. However, some residual water remains that mustbe drained by removing the drain plug.

Tighten the hull drain plug 11

securely before launching the SportBoat. Clean any foreign material, such as dirt or sand, from thethreads before installing the drainplug.

TRAILERING

Avoid accident and injury fromimproper trailering:

The trailer must be matched forthe Sport Boat’s weight and hull.

The towing vehicle must have thecapacity of pulling the load.Pulling a load that exceeds thetowing capacity may cause lossof control.

Be sure the boat is secured to thetrailer and the trailer is properlyhitched to the towing vehiclebefore towing.

A trailer is provided as standard equip-ment with your Sport Boat. If you needto obtain another trailer, choose onethat is manufactured to carry a boat ofthe size and weight of your Sport Boat.Check the certification label on the leftforward side of the trailer. This label isrequired to show the Gross VehicleWeight Rating (GVWR), which is theload carrying capacity of the trailer plusthe trailer’s weight. Be sure that thetotal weight of your boat, any cargo, and the trailer weight itself does notexceed the GVWR.

HITCHThe trailer hitch ball must match thesize of the socket on the trailer hitchcoupler. Hitches are divided into class-es that specify the gross trailer weight(GTW) and the maximum tongueweight. Always use a hitch rated for thesame or higher class. Use a bolted-onor welded-on hitch; clamp-on bumperhitches are not recommended. Be surethe trailer hitch’s release handle islatched with the lock pin installedbefore towing.

Use safety chains between the towingvehicle and the trailer so the trailer willnot detach completely from the towingvehicle if it accidentally comes loosefrom the hitch ball. Crisscross thechains under the trailer tongue so thetongue will not hit the road surface if itfalls loose. Rig the chains as tightly aspossible while allowing just enoughslack to permit tight turns.

Be sure the tongue weight (verticalweight on the hitch point) is correct.Generally, 5% to 10% of the combinedweight of the boat and trailer should beon the tongue. Too much or too littleweight can cause difficult steering ortrailer swaying.

TRAILERING CHECKLIST Check your state laws to be sure

your trailer meets all regulations, such as proper licensing, brake, axle load, and safety chain require-ments.

Check trailer for any loose fastenersor damaged parts.

 Check tires for proper inflation.

Check wheel bearings and wheellug nuts before each trip.

Check tail, brake, and turn signallights for proper operation.

Secure the bow of the boat to thetrailer with the winch line and alsowith the chain. Secure the sterncleats to the trailer with tie-downs.

Take down and store the bimini top,if used. The top is not designed tostay unsecured on the Sport Boat athighway speeds. See page 3-12.

Carry a spare tire for the trailer, along with sufficient tools to changethe tire.

While traveling, check the wheelhubs on the trailer whenever youpark. If the hub feels abnormally hot, have the bearing inspected beforecontinuing your trip. On longer trips,

it is a good idea to carry a set ofspare wheel bearings, seals, andraces.

When making a turn, do not cut cor-ners. The trailer has a smaller turn-ing circle so it turns more sharplyaround the corner than the towingvehicle.

Before backing your trailer into thewater, disconnect the light plug fromthe towing vehicle. This will reducethe likelihood of the lights blowingout when submerged.

BACKING YOUR TRAILERIt takes practice to back a trailer suc-cessfully. If you are not familiar backingup with a trailer, practice first in an openarea away from obstacles.

Keep the following points in mind:

Back slowly. Make steering adjust-ments in small steps.

Turn the towing vehicle’s wheelsopposite the direction you want thetrailer to go.

After the trailer begins moving, turnthe towing vehicle to follow it.

OPERATION 3LAUNCHING

As a courtesy to other boaters, prepareyour Sport Boat for launching beforeusing the ramp.

Each launch may have particular differ-ences, such as ramp angle, prevailingwind, waves, and water currents. Ifpossible, watch a couple of boaterslaunch their boats first to notice anyproblems. While every boater developsa preferred launch procedure, here is arecommended general procedure:

1) Perform the Pre-Operation Checksshown on page 3-4 that can be per-formed on land, including operatingthe blower for at least 4 minutes.

2) Remove all trailering tie-down linesfrom the boat and attach your dock-ing lines and fenders, if used.

3) Disconnect the trailer lights from thetowing vehicle.

4) Back the trailer down the ramp asclose to 90° to the shoreline as youcan. If possible, have a second per-son stand aside as an observer.Stop when the wheels are at leasthalfway submerged. Set the parkingbrake.

5) Remove the bow line from the boweye.

6) Back the trailer farther into thewater until just the tops of the fend-ers show, then reset the parkingbrake. Board the boat and start it. Ifpossible, remain on the trailer untilthe engines are warm and areresponding to throttle.

7) Back the boat out into the water, watching carefully for people, otherboats, or obstacles.

LOADING

1) Disconnect the trailer lights from thetowing vehicle.

2) Back the trailer down the ramp asclose to 90° to the shoreline as youcan. If possible, have a second per-son act as an observer while stand-ing to the side of the boat. Stopwhen the tops of the trailer’s fend-ers are about 3 inches above thewaterline.

3) With the boat moving at the slowestidle speed, guide the boat onto thesupport rails. Use throttle only ifnecessary for steering ability.

Using too much throttle can causethe boat to jump over the front of thetrailer which can result in injury tothe boat operator and bystanders.Use only enough throttle to maneu-ver the boat into the correct posi-tion.

Page 73: SR230 Owner's / Operator's Manual - Yamaha Motor Company · Yamaha Motor Corporation, U.S.A. is expressly prohibited. Printed in U.S.A. LIT-18626-05-66 ... Owner’s/Operator’s

4) Make sure the boat is centered onthe support rails and is headedstraight for the bow stop (bumperboard). Ease the boat forward untilthe bow rests against the bow stop.

5) Attach and tighten the winch line.

The winch line is not designed topull the boat onto the trailer.

The winch line should not be theonly line securing the bow duringtrailering. Use the chain alongwith the winch to secure the boatto the trailer.

6) Pull the trailer up the ramp out of theway of other boaters. Attach thebow and stern tie-downs.Reconnect the trailer lights.

7) Follow the Post-Operation Checkson page 3-25.

LIFTING

Do not attach lifting cables to thebow eye, cleats, water-ski tow eye,or grab handles. Serious damage tothe boat can occur. Use only a slingdesigned specifically for liftingboats.

If you need to remove the Sport Boatfrom the water without a trailer, usethese guidelines:

Use a sling-type lifting mechanismdesigned for lifting boats. The slingshould be covered with a protectivematerial to prevent damage to thehull gelcoat.

Use spreader bars to avoid sidestress to the hull that may causecracks in the gelcoat and fiberglass.

Attach guidelines to the bow eyeand stern tie-down cleats to controlmovement of the boat during lifting.

Remove all people and all cargofrom the boat. Drain any excesswater from the bilge using the bilgepump.

Be sure all people are standingclear, then lift boat slowly and justfar enough to verify that the boat issecurely held and properly bal-anced. If necessary, lower the boatagain and adjust the slings.

When ready, lift the boat slowly andcarefully.

STORAGEStoring your Sport Boat for prolongedperiods of time, such as winter storage, requires preventative maintenance toensure against deterioration. It is advis-able to have the Sport Boat serviced byan authorized Yamaha Sport Boat deal-er before storage. However, the follow-ing procedures can be performed bythe owner with a minimum of tools.

FUEL SYSTEM

Top off the fuel tank with fresh fuel, adding one ounce of Yamaha FuelConditioner and Stabilizer or an equiv-alent to each gallon of fuel. A full fueltank is less likely to allow condensationto collect in the tank, reducing thechance of contaminated fuel. Runningthe engines with treated fuel duringcooling system flushing will also helpprotect carburetors and fuel lines.

NOTE: Use of Yamaha FuelConditioner and Stabilizer eliminatesthe need to drain the fuel system.Consult your Yamaha dealer or otherqualified mechanic if the fuel system isto be drained instead.

COOLING SYSTEM FLUSHING

➀ Flush Hose Connector➁ Garden Hose Adapter➂ Cap

Cooling system flushing is essential toprevent the cooling system from clog-ging up with salt, sand, or dirt.

1) Open the cap for the engine you aregoing to flush. Press the flush kitgarden hose adapter into the flushhose connector and turn until theyare securely connected.

2) Start the engine, then immediatelyturn on the water supply fully.

Never turn on the water beforestarting the engine. The watercould flow back through the muf-fler into the crankcase causingsevere engine damage.

Be sure to turn on the waterimmediately after starting theengine to prevent engine over-heating.

3) Run the engine at a fast idle for10~15 minutes.

SPARK PLUG CLEANING ANDADJUSTMENT

The spark plug is an important enginecomponent and is easy to inspect. Thecondition of the spark plug can indicatesomething about the condition of theengine. For example, if the center elec-trode porcelain is very white, this couldindicate an intake air leak or carbure-tion problem in that cylinder.

Do not attempt to diagnose any prob-lems yourself. Instead, take the SportBoat to a Yamaha Sport Boat dealer. You should periodically remove andinspect the spark plug because heatand deposits will cause the spark plugto slowly break down and erode. Ifelectrode erosion becomes excessive,or if carbon and other deposits areexcessive, you should replace thespark plug with another of the correcttype.

Before installing the spark plug, mea-sure the electrode gap with a wirethickness gauge; adjust the gap tospecification if necessary.

When fitting the plug, always clean thegasket surface and use a new gasket.Wipe off any dirt from the threads andscrew in the spark plug to the correcttorque.

NOTE: Before installing the spark plugcap, be sure to wipe off any water onthe spark plug or inside the cap. Pushthe spark plug cap down until it clicks.

NOTE: If a torque-wrench is not avail-able when you are fitting a spark plug,a good estimate of the correct torque(with a new gasket) is 1/4 to 1/2 turnpast finger-tight. Have the spark plugadjusted to the correct torque as soonas possible with a torque wrench.

When removing or installing a sparkplug, be careful not to damage theinsulator. A damaged insulator couldallow external sparks, which couldlead to explosion or fire.

EMERGENCYPROCEDURES

TOWING THE SPORT BOAT

➀ Bow eye

The Sport Boat should be towed only ifit becomes inoperative.

The towing rope should be longenough so that the Sport Boat will notcollide with the towing boat when slow-ing down. A good rule of thumb is a towrope which is three times the combinedlength of the towing boat and the SportBoat.

Tow the Sport Boat using the bow eyeonly. Tow the boat at a “no wake”speed.

Do not tow the Sport Boat at speedfast enough to leave a wake. Severeengine damage could resultbecause water can flood the non-operating engines through the cool-ing water intake.

The operator of the towing boatmust keep speed to a minimum andavoid traffic or obstacles whichcould be a hazard to the driver onthe Sport Boat.

RUNNING ON ONE ENGINE

If one engine becomes inoperative, theproperly running engine can be used toreturn to shore. Operate at a “no wake”speed to prevent water from floodingthe non-operating engine through thecooling water intake.

Do not operate the Sport Boat abovea “no wake” speed with just oneengine. Severe engine damagecould result because water canflood the non-operating enginesthrough the cooling water intake.

JUMP STARTING

➀ Negative (–) jumper cable

➁ Positive (+) jumper cable

If the boat battery runs down, theengines can be started in an emer-gency using a 12-volt battery andjumper cables.

SEVERE INJURY OR DEATH MAYRESULT IF YOU IGNORE ANY OFTHE FOLLOWING:

● If blower will not operate, venti-late engine compartment byopening engine compartmenthatch for several minutes beforeattempting jump starting.

● Do not connect the negative (–)jumper cable to the negative (–)terminal of the dead battery.Sparks could ignite battery orfuel vapors, which could causean explosion.

To connect the jumper cables:

1) Connect the positive (+) terminal ofthe dead battery to the positive ter-minal (+)of the booster battery withthe positive jumper cable.

2) Connect one end of the negative (–)jumper cable to the negative (–) ter-minal of the booster battery.

3) Connect the other end of the nega-tive (–) cable to an engine hangeron either side of the engine oil tank.

Be sure all connections are secureand correct before attempting to startthe engine. Any wrong connectionmay damage the electrical system.

4) Start the engine, then disconnectthe cables by reversing the abovesteps.

Do not turn the starter motor formore than 5 seconds. If the enginedoes not start in 5 seconds, releasethe starter switch and try again after15 seconds. Continuous cranking formore than 5 seconds will dischargethe battery and the engine will notstart. The starter motor may also bedamaged if it is engaged continuous-ly for more than five seconds.

SEVERE INJURY OR DEATH MAYRESULT IF YOU IGNORE ANY OFTHE FOLLOWING:

● Turn off and remove both ignitionkeys, remove lanyard, and waitfor all movement to stop beforeremoving access port caps.

● Never override interlocks to runengine with hatch open.

● The impeller has sharp edges. Becareful when reaching into jetpump area.

If weeds or debris get caught in theintake or impeller, cavitation can occur, and though the engine speed rises, for-ward thrust will decrease. If this condi-tion is allowed to continue, pumpdamage can occur and the enginesmay overheat and seize. If there is anysign that the jet intake or impeller isclogged with weeds or debris, followthis cleanout procedure.

1) Turn off and remove ignition keys, remove lanyard, and wait for allmovement to stop.

2) Lift the hatch on the rear platform.

3) Check that the retaining cord issecurely attached to the cap andretaining strap. Press the releasebutton and lift the cap up out of theport. Set the cap where it cannot beaccidentally knocked overboard.

4) Remove any weeds or debris fromthe drive shaft, impeller, pump hous-ing, and steering nozzle. If you can-not remove the debris, consult yourYamaha Sport Boat Dealer.
