(or) D (deuterium) and 31 H (or) T

(tritium). Deuterium is also known as heavy

hydrogen. One part of tritium is present per 1018

parts of ordinary hydrogen mostly inthe form of HD

Of these isotopes, only tritium is radioactive and emit low energy harmless-particles.

Acid strength increses in the ordergiven as HF << HCl << HBr <<HI.Statement II : As the size of theelements F, Cl, Br, I increases downthe group, the bond strength of HF,HCl, HBr and HI decreases and sothe acid strength increases. In the light of the above statments, choose the correct answer of fromthe options given below.1) Both Statement I and Statement IIare false.2) Statement I is correct but StatementII is false.3) Statement I is incorrect butStatement II is true.4) Both Statement I and Statement IIare true.

Hydrogen Halides Bond strength, bond length and thermal

stability :• Since size of halogen atom increases

from F to I down the gorup, bond lengthof H–X bond increases down the group.

Reactivity and acidic character .

HF < HCl < HBr < HI• Bond strength is inversely, proportional

to bond length i.e., larger the bondlength, lower the bond strength is

HF > HCl > HBr > HI• Higher the bond dissociation energy,

greater will be thermal stability. Thus, thermal stability follows the order.

HF > HCl > HBr > HI.
