Good afternoon and welcome to The Royal British Legion Stadium for this afternoon’s home league fixture against Congleton Town FC. First of all may I welcome Congleton’s management team and all asso-ciated with the club. I hope you feel welcomed and have a safe journey home.
We still await our first win in the league this season which is disappointing, however, I feel that some of our performances have deserved more than the point we have achieved. Take Wednesday’s game for example….there was nothing in the game really until they scored, then after that I felt we dominated the game and created more than enough chances to score more than the one goal we did. We need to be ruthless in both boxes to ensure we get the points we want.
Today we face Congleton Town who I was impressed with at the end of last season. They were a big dom-inant side so I expect a very tough fixture today.
I hope you enjoy the game and visit us again for our next home fixture….
Ben Fletcher (Sponsored by S. E. I. [Maintenance] LTD)
Superb young shot stopper that had a tremendous season last year. Kept numerous clean sheets and played every single minute of every single game. 2015/16 will be his 3rd season with the club where he’ll be looking to continue his fine form.
Nathan Trout (Available for sponsorship)
Nathan moved to the Fylde coast from Liverpool. A ball winning centre half that has a big presence on the pitch, he’ll be hoping to force his way into the team and make his position his own.
Alex Colquhoun (Available for sponsorship)
After a short spell at the club last season, Alex has returned to the club hungry and deter-mined to play on a regular basis. He showed signs of quality last season and will be looking to cement his place in the 2015/16 season.
Brett Ferguson (Sponsored by Service Solutions Direct Ltd)
One of the main characters within the changing room, “Channy” as he is called, always has stories to tell, consistently produced good displays during last season and got on the score sheet on numerous occasions. A very adaptable player that has made a huge impression on all within the club. Winner of Clubman of the Year 2014/15.
Wes Benjamin (Available for sponsorship)
Wes is a highly promising defender that arrives in time for the start of the 2015/16 sea-son. He has experience playing in National League North football but is looking to develop through regular football with Squires Gate. Wes is comfortable playing at both centre back or right back and can even play in midfield if needed.
Andy Richards (Available for sponsorship)
A club stalwart! ‘Rico’ as he is known, has been with the club for many seasons and has be-come a linchpin of the side. His performances and changing room experience has played a vital role in recent success. A player with many superstitions that is well liked at the club.
Josh Westwood (Sponsored by Mark Ashmore)
Josh was a rock at the heart of defence during last season. He produced some fine individu-al displays and chipped in with a few headed goals. A quiet individual but very popular player that lets his feet, or head do the talking. Josh is also adaptable to play up front.
Terry Cummings (Available for sponsorship)
Terry is a graduate of Myerscough College. He made his debut on the opening day of this season against 1874 Northwich. He is a forward player capable of playing across the front of any of the attacking positions in midfield. With bags of skill and ability, he’ll be hoping to make his mark on the season at the earliest opportunity.
Keiffer Cunningham (Available for sponsorship)
Kiefer is a very promising young player that can play in numerous attacking positions. He made a limited number of appearances last year due to work commitments but is hoping to make a big impact this season. A young prospect with plenty to offer.
Mike Hall (Available for sponsorship)
Mike was only with Gate briefly last season but his knowledge and experi-ence of the game was beneficial to all that played alongside him. He was in-fluential in his performances and will be looking to have the same impact throughout the 2015/16 season.
Josh Kay (Available for sponsorship)
One of the youngest players in the squad that broke into the first team ranks at the end of last season. Very talented player with a strong personal-ity which makes him ideal for non league football. Very bright future ahead of him if he stays focused and learns from others around him.
Alex McKendrick (Available for sponsorship)
Alex has been at the club for a number of seasons, first arriving under the stewardship of ex manager Russ McKenna. His work rate and willingness to do the unfashionable jobs in a game have been hugely important to the team. Injury put a halt to his 2014/15 season but he’ll be looking to come back a stronger player this season.
Billy McKenna (Available for sponsorship)
The flying winger missed a large part of last season due to injury but is looking to make the right midfield position his own. A popular player within the changing room that can have a big influence on games when in the mood.
Ashley Rowley (Available for sponsorship)
Ash joined Gate towards the end of last season, and impressed in the time he played. He scored a crucial equaliser at home to Congleton Town and will be looking to have an impact this season.
Danny Penswick (Sponsored by Bill White)
Danny is the captain of the club. He first joined midway through the 2013/14 season and soon established himself as a leader and highly influen-tial player. His game understanding and levels of performance have seen him become a focal point of the team.
Mark Buchan (Available for sponsorship)
Mark models himself on Ally McCoist. A fiery Scot that knows where the goal is. His workmanlike performances often go unnoticed, but he scored some valuable goals during last season. An influential player both on and off the pitch and will be a key player during this season.
Aaron Clarke (Available for sponsorship)
Aaron was part of the Kirkham and Wesham squad which was victorious at Wembley in 2008. Unfortunately for Aaron, he picked up an injury the week before the final so didn’t take part in the game. A quick striker who pos-sesses skill and eye for a pass and can also play in behind the striker in at-tacking midfield. Aaron will be looking to cement a spot up top and to fire Gate up the table.

BORE DRAW AS GATE CONTINUE
UNBEATEN MONTH
Squires Gate returned to league action last weekend as they hosted Ashton Athletic. Coming into the game, Ashton sat in 13th place in the table and came into the game on the back of a 3-1 loss to Atherton Collieries in the cup. Gate made two changes to the team that beat Irlam on Tuesday night with Benjamin coming in for Kay who was in-jured and Nathan Trout in for Ash Rowley who dropped to the bench.
Both teams made a good start to the game with both seemingly wanting to attack. Gates front men looked lively and didn’t give Ashton’s back line much time on the ball. The opening 20 minutes didn’t really have any notable clear cut chances until Mark Buchan hit the ball from the edge of the box. His shot could only find the keepers arms though. Ashton best chances came 5 minutes after Gates, but Fletcher was on hand to deny Ashton’s attack. Former Gate striker Isaac Kusaloka had the chance to open the scoring after 35 minutes but his shot cannoned way over the bar. Gates best chance of the game came soon after.
A free kick fired in found the head of Josh Westwood but his header could only find the post. But with the ball rattling off the post Cummings could have opened the scor-ing but he couldn’t guide the ball into the empty net. Ben Fletcher in net for Gate kept the home side in the game on the stroke of half time. Ashton’s Callum Mahoney strik-ing from outside the box but Fletcher was equal to push the ball of the post and Dan-iel Smith couldn’t finish the rebound.
The second half saw little in the way of chances for either side. Gate tried to influ-ence the game with substitutions and a change in formation but just couldn’t find that killer finish in the box. A good driving run beating 2 Ashton players by Cummings opened up space for Ferguson from left back but his curled effort fell straight into the arms of the keeper. Both Gates wingers were involved late on and both could have won the game for Gate. First Ash Rowley on as a sub hit the ball on the volley from outside the box but Ashton had 3 men on the line to clear the ball away. Then Billy McKenna tried a cheeky shot straight from the corner but he couldn’t catch Ashtons keeper out.
Gate still winless, as the game went on to finish 0-0.

GATE LEAVE IT LATE Wednesday 16th September 2015
Report by Mark Ashmore. Pictures by Albert Cooper
Gate still wait for the first win of the season after equalising late on at Darwen last night. Gate haven’t travelled well this year and find them-selves at the wrong end of the table. Gate made just the one change with Josh Kay coming back into the team in place of Cummings who dropped to the bench.
The returning Kay was first to have a chance for Gate, he drifted in from the left but his pass was cut out before it found Mckenna in the box. Kay again was lively down the left after a good spell of possession from Gate but after his good work to beat his man, his cross was poor. Mckenna on the other wing came into the game but after beating two Darwen men, his shot was blocked. The ball found it’s way over to Fergu-son on the left hand side soon after but his shot was deflected wide. Gate best chance of the half came from Kay. Just before half time he struck the ball from outside the box but the home keeper did well to save. The follow up corner for Gate was just headed over by Buchan in what was another good chance just before the break.
The home side had the first chance of the half but Fletcher was well be-hind the strike. The home side would open the scoring soon after. The ball played across the goal and with Gates defence stood still Darwen pounced and opened the scoring. Gate who had been the better team throughout, continued to attack and had plenty of chances. Gaul, the scorer for Darwen, had another chance but this time it was over. Billy McKenna had Gates next chance but the keeper spilt his shot. Nobody could follow up on the loose ball, which was eventually cleared. Two of Gates substitutes almost linked up to equalise for Gate. Terry Cummings sent down the line and he found space to play a superb ball across the box but Rowley who was in he middle, couldn’t make contact with the ball. Late drama ensued for Gate as minutes from the end of the game Danny Penswick had a header cleared off the line by Darwen Player/manager Neil Prince. Gates kept the pressure coming and were all over Darwen in the last 10 minutes. They would make that pressure pay with seconds left on the clock, Terry Cummings stepping up to poke the ball home after a scramble in the box.
The late draw means Gate are still without a league win but were much the better side and deserved more than one point.

Highest Attendance: 6,800 (vs Macclesfield Town, 1953-54)
FA Cup Progression: 1 st Round (vs Crewe Alexandra 1989-90)
Congleton Town are based in Cheshire. The club was formed in 1901, and were crowned champions in their first 3 seasons (1901-02 to 1903-04). The season after, they finished in fifth place. After a few decades, Congleton joined the Northern Premier League in the newly created Division One, where they finished 9th. In the 1989-90 season, they reached the first round of the FA Cup, after beating Witton Albion in the fourth qualifying round. In the first round they were drawn away to Football League side Crewe Alexandra, where they lost 2-0. However, they struggled most years at the higher level of the Northern Premier League and after finishing in last place in the 2000-01 sea-son, they were relegated to the NWCFL. They did though, reach the fourth round of the FA Trophy where they lost 6-2 to Worksop Town. The club remained in Division One, which was renamed to the Premier Division in 2008.
At the end of that season, Congleton finished fourth behind now Conference North side AFC Fylde, New Mills and Newcastle Town and only AFC Fylde gained promotion to the Northern Premier League. Regardless of where they had finished, they would not have gained promotion because they did not submit an application for promotion.
At the end of the 2010-11 season, the bears appointed ex Wigan goalkeeper Giuseppe Paladino, who was assistant manager at Rossendale United, but some disappointing performances and declining attendances saw his reign short lived. Within 2011 and 2014, Congleton had Dean Sibson and Jim Vince at the helm but after 3 years Vince stepped down and handed over to current caretaker managers Steve Hardy and Mike McDonald
This week we interviewed Squires Gate supporter Spencer Leader, as he
talks about how he got involved at the club, his most memorable moment,
and his expectations for this season.
Spencer, what encouraged you to get involved at Squires Gate?
Well, I come down about four years ago, Albert bought be down with Bill.
We felt at home straight away, everyone was welcoming and we fitted in
well with everyone.
We have made some great friends along the way as well. It passes my
Saturday afternoon, although sometimes it can be very frustrating. But all
in all, I really enjoy myself every week, home or away, whether good, bad
or ugly. The ground is always in great condition as well, thanks to Mr Brian
Addison who does a fantastic job with his fellow groundsmen.
Within your time at the club, what has been your most memorable
game?
I would have to say last seasons FA Cup game away at New Mills AFC. It
was a fantastic game for us, progressing through to the next round but also
the fact we turned it round from 2-1 down to win 3-2 and overall a great
performance from our lads.
I also think the games against Glossop North End were entertaining, but
not any game in particular. It was just always good to watch, as we were
always pressuring them.
Any players that you think have potential to bring something special to
the club?
Of course, Jack Sowerby was definitely one of the best players I have seen
at non league level and deserves his chance at Fleetwood Town. We are
lucky to have some great players here at Squires Gate, but Joshua Kay and
Ash Rowley are showing what they can add this season. We have a great
captain in Danny Penswick, and I’d hate to lose Ben Fletcher. He’s a star
every week!
What do you expect from this season?
With the way things are going at the moment, I would say a mid-table
finish. A couple of new signings would make a difference though.
Thanks for your time Spencer.
SQUIRES GATE 0-2 Congleton Town
Tues 15 April 2014
Squires Gate welcomed mid table, Congle-ton Town, with fond memories of their 25th March encounter when Gate came away with three valuable points winning goals to nil. The game was even with both sides showing they wanted to win. Billy McKenna, was finding space down the right and Sowerby, and Mullan were caus-ing problems or the visiting defenders.
But a corner for Gate, was cleared and Town raced the length of the pitch with Brandon Moores lashing the ball past keeper Ben Fletcher. On 10 mins. Despite the early setback the home side pushed forward with Neil Unsworth, and Seydou Bamba providing crosses into the danger area. The visitors keeper, had to make a couple of saves, and Gate must have felt they were unlucky to go in for the interval be-hind.
The second half started at a fast pace with the home side attacking, and looking deter-mined to pull back the first half goal. As the game wore on the visitors showed that they were just as determined to take revenge for their ear-lier meeting and on the 68th min. a shot was parried by Ben Fletcher, but the ball went straight to Brandon Moore
GATE GO INTO FINAL DAY NEEDING A
WIN TO SURVIVE
SQUIRES GATE 1-1 CONGLETON TOWN
Sat 18 April, 2015
At the end of the 2014/15 season, Squires Gate hosted Congleton Town, who were on the back of a 1-0 defeat the last time out, were looking to end the season on a high and with maximum points. Gate made two changes to the starting 11 with Reece Lancashire coming in to make his first start for the club in place of Josh Kay who served his one match ban and Ashley Rowley coming in for Alex Murphy, who was unavailable.
Gate made the worst possible start to the game as after just two minutes into the first half they were behind. A mix up between Ferguson and Westwood at the back led to the foul on the Congleton attacker. From the free kick Congleton striker Scott McGowan found himself in acres of space to easily finish to put the visitors into a 2 minute lead. It would be fair to say that the visitors started the better of the two as they went on to control the next 15 minutes of the game. It was after 20 minutes that Gate came back into the game chances for both Mckenna and Buchan but neither really tested Eve in net. After a good 10 minute spell of play by Gate Congleton again came back into the game and finished the half the better team. Congleton would put together some lovely passing moves knocking the ball around with confidence but didn't really test Fletcher in net for Gate for the rest of the first half.
The second half was a closer affair with Gate coming back into the game as the half continued. Gate seemed to look to utilise their wide men more in the second half trying to get in behind Congleton's backline. Congleton's midfield though were winning the important battles in the middle constantly winning the second balls to counter Gates attack. One positive on show for the home side though was their willingness and determination not to give up. The persistence in attack and threat throughout the second half from the home side was something to be applauded by all. Gate's hard work would pay off as they mounted the pressure in the last 10 minutes. Gate manager Dave McCann brought himself onto the pitch with 10 minutes left to lead the line and change the game for Gate. The introduction of the manager coincided with a change of style for Gate as they looked to deliver the ball long from deep. Alongside Centre back Josh Westwood, now pushed up front, Gate possessed plenty to aim for in the box. It was McCann who had a golden chance to equalise for Gate with 4 minutes left on the clock, but his first time volley went high over the bar much to the dismay of the crowd. With literally the last kick off the game Gate would get their reward for the hard work put in. The ball fired into the area fell to Centre back Josh Westwood on the edge of the box quick footwork and clever thinking from the defender saw him

WIN YOUR HOME GAMES AND DRAW YOUR AWAY
GAMES
Well, at least that’s what they say. In theory, Gate have got
half of that right, picking up four points from eight games. We
are well into the new season now, yet we are still winless
and currently sit in the bottom three, but hopefully we can
start to turn things around within the next month.
On Wednesday night, we travelled down to AFC Darwen. It
was never going to be an easy task, going to a newly promoted side and getting
three points, even more so AFC Darwen have had a good run of form this sea-
son and sat mid-table going into the game. The ground was neat and tidy, fitted
with a modern bar and clubhouse and I must say the pie and chips were good
value at £2.50! Onto the game, and for the first 20 minutes there were no flood-
lights on the opposite side to the dugouts, but this didn’t really affect the run of
play as the sides went in 0-0 at half time. The home side got the opener in the
second half through a cross that was not dealt with between Westwood and Fer-
guson, and their striker was there to take advantage to put them one up.
McCann bought on attackers Ash Rowley and Terry Cummings, who linked up
well to get Gate an equaliser with a minute to go.
Today, we welcome Cheshire side Congleton Town who have had an excellent
FA Cup run and play away to four times FA Vase winners, Whitley Bay, in the
next round. In the league however, they sit one place above Gate in the bottom
three but have played nearly half the amount of games. They go into today’s
game on the back of a 4-2 defeat to Runcorn Town, so they will be looking to get
back on track here.
Unfortunately, I won’t be at today’s game as I am in Newcastle for the weekend
supporting Watford but I hope everyone enjoys the match programme as much
as we enjoy putting it together!
UNDER 13’S ACTION
Mick Bishop’s under 13’s are away at Fishersfield tomorrow, as they look to
carry on their excellent start against Foxhall. They have scored 31 goals in 4
games and 17 goals in the league so there will be plenty of goals. On the 27th
September they will be at home to Bispham Vipers and on the 4th October, they
will be taking part in their first cup game as they take on Euxton Villa in the
Lancashire Cup. Feel free to come on down and support the lads!

Squires Gate reserves made the long journey to Workington Town on Wednesday night, as they played their first leg of the Lancashire Cup. Gate fought hard but on the 71st minute, Workington took the lead through sub Jonny Murray and their lead was soon doubled 8 minutes later when Robbie Hebson looked to have given Workington a comfortable advantage going into the 2nd leg. However, in the 90th minute, Barney Morris climbed higher then the defenders to give Gate a consolation going into the second leg.

SQUIRES GATE 7-2 ALSAGER TOWN
Sat 20 Sep, 2014
Squires Gate entertained Alsager Town at School Road, hoping to bounce back in the league after their FA cup exit at the hands of Bamber Bridge. Gate made just one change from that team with Andy Richards coming back in for Brett Ferguson.
Alsager made the brighter start in the game looking fired up, looking the more confident and having the best of the possession in the opening stages. And it was also the away side who went ahead early on, a mistake by Danny Penswick who's back pass let in Alsager attacker Josh Gordon in to finish well.
It took Gate until the 24th minute to equalise the scoreline, Sean Holmes hacked down on the edge of the box and with the referee awarding a penal-ty, Alex Murphy stepped up to slot home. Gate looked threatening and again got themselves on the score sheet Danny Penswick rising highest from the corner to put the home side ahead. Gate who could have been ahead even further shortly after but Alex Murphy's couldn't control the ball on the edge of the area, moments later Murphy had a chance to add another goal to his tally but his header found the wrong side of the post. But on 40 minutes Gate would cement thier lead, tricky Harry Dunn using his lighten-ing pace eased away past the defence and finish cleverly slotted the ball past Kurasic the Alsager keeper.
Into the second half and there was abuzz around the ground after Gate had come back from one down to be leading 3-1 many fans were expecting double figures. Gate started the second half like the finished the first, the home side were first to every ball and clearly wanted the win more. The man of the first half Alex Murphy could have added another goal to his col-lection but his header was saved well by the Alsager goal keeper. It took Gate until the 60th minute to add to their tally, Jake Forshaw meeting the ball first to head past the on-rushing keeper.
It would be Forshaw who would steal the headlines, the winger beating the offside trap before a com-posed finish to make it 5 on the 75th minute. But the little winger wasn't done there, when on the 89th minute he completed his hatrick from the penalty spot. Harry Dunn fouled on the edge of the box and Forshaw was adamant to take the spot kick to make it
