Surry Community College fine art students enjoy a variety of classes including painting, drawing, two and three dimensional design, sculpture and ceramics. Art students can pursue an Associate in Fine Arts (AFA) Degree as part of the transfer program at Surry. The AFA degree allows students to go directly into the workforce as practicing artists or transfer to a four year institution to complete a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. The AFA curriculum provides graduates with a solid foundation for artistic growth and prepares students to meet the selective admission criteria of four year schools. Course work includes classes in the humanities, English, mathematics and social sciences along with a choice of concentration, depending upon individual student interests, in two or three dimensional fine arts classes.

Fine Arts student Geoffrey Walker of Elkin has a passion for hand building ceramic characters. Walker is developing a videogame called Code RXT that started as a graduation project at Elkin High School, and now he makes the characters come to life on screen and in clay. He has sculpted 80 ceramics characters and has a goal of 200. The characters are from an imaginary world where there are three factions – the good guys, the neutrals and the bad guys.

“I love the environment of the ceramics studio. It’s a great place to be. It’s relaxing, and it’s stress-less. I like to get into the zone and focus on one thing,” Walker said. “If it doesn’t go well, I just break it down and start over, or I take the mistake and work with it to make it better. It’s also a collaborative environment where the instructor is always there to help you, and the students help each other.”

Walker has received scholarships from the Foothills Arts Council and the Surry Arts Council to continue his ceramics work at the college. He hopes to own a ceramics studio one day.

Top and bottom pictures: Brown displays some of her creations developed using pen, ink and water.

DeDe Brown is a senior with the Surry Early College who is working on the completion of her high school degree along with an Associate in Arts. This Mount Airy resident hopes to transfer to either Appalachian State University or UNC-Asheville after graduation. During her studies at Surry Community College, she has discovered a love of the Fine Arts.

“I love to draw people, very abstract people,” Brown said. “I like using a lot of mixed media – pen, ink and water. Sometimes I like to incorporate physical things from nature such as flowers.”

Artists such as Banksy, Salvador Dali and M.C. Escher inspire Brown’s artwork, which she has tapped into through her college classes.

“The classes here are more creative and more freeing and more about your personal artistic process rather than learning everyone else’s process. It’s very individualized with smaller class sizes. Plus, the students in these classes are there because they want to be there, which creates a better learning environment,” she said.

Brown pushes herself in the classes and likes the collaborative atmosphere where the students help each other. She has been attending the Surry Early College since the ninth grade, and this is her senior year.

“I just love going to class here. It’s such a good school,” Brown said. “I would recommend that others take Fine Art classes at Surry. It’s such a great experience.”

For more information, contact Danajean Mabry, Lead Instructor for the Associate in Fine Arts program, at (336) 386-3284 or [email protected].

Engineering Design Certificate Leads to Career in DraftingIn The Spotlight

Students can get a certificate in Engineering Design that will lead to employment as drafters by only taking 18 credit hours of study at Surry Community College.

“There are definitely companies out there who need people skilled in Engineering Design, which is a new term for drafting,” said Scott Lester, who is an Engineering Design Technology Instructor at Surry Community College. “There is a shortage of good drafters. Drafters are the engineers’ and architects’ workhorses. People want to be an engineer or architect, but they don’t realize they have to know drafting to be one.”

Lester graduated from Surry Community College in 2008 with an Associate’s Degree in Applied Science in Mechanical Drafting Technology.

“I am very passionate about what I do. I was always the kid who loved playing with Legos, and I knew I wanted to do something in design at an early age,” Lester said. “I absolutely love drafting. At North Surry High School, I learned AutoCAD, which is a two-dimensional drafting program.”

After graduating from SCC, Lester worked at the North Carolina Granite Corporation for 4.5 years doing architectural drafting where he would take drawings from architectural firms and apply granite facades, veneers or enhancements to buildings.

Sometimes he would closely follow an architect’s instructions, and other times he would have the freedom to come up with his own design for the granite application. Then, he would create fabrication tickets for each piece of granite to be produced including the layout, calculating the angles and accounting for expansion joints.

When employed by the North Carolina Granite Corporation, he did work on the Eternal Flame Memorial at Fort Bragg and the Allentown Art Museum in Pennsylvania.

Lester has been a design drafter at Fairchild Industrial Products, known as Rotork Fairchild, since February of 2013.

“I am the next step up from a draftsman. I can design things from scratch now,” he said. “I create component drawings, assembly drawings and work instruction sheets, which are used in-house by plant assemblers as well as sent to vendors. I design tooling used to assemble the product. The engineers at our company design the product, but my work explains how the product is to be put together and fabricated.”

Rotork makes pneumatic devices for the oil and gas, medical, and tire industries. Thus, the work Lester does is behind the scenes, but important.

“I also get to dabble in marketing a little bit. I use KeyShot, which is a 3D rendering software, and apply photorealistic graphics to 3D CAD files to create images used for catalogs and flyers for distributors,” Lester said.

Drafting is rewarding and lucrative and feels like a hobby to Lester.

“The favorite part of my job is getting paid to draw stuff all day. I don’t have to do hard, manual labor. I get paid to play. Being able to see things that you have designed or drawn and hold it in your hand is really neat. The satisfying part of my job is seeing the products that I designed, and people admire every day. They just don’t realize the work that went into it,” he said.

Scott Lester is an Engineering Design Technology Instructor at Surry Community College. He also works full-time as a design drafter at Fairchild Industrial Products Inc. known as Rotork Fairchild.

ENGINEERING DESIGNT E C H N O L O G Y

About the ProgramA course of study that prepares the students to apply technical skills and advanced computer software and hardware to create working drawings, graphic representations and computer simulations for mechanical and industrial designs.

JobsGraduates of the SCC Engineering Design program have the opportunity to be employed as:

Mechanical Drafter CAD DesignerDesigner Project Designer

Lester says that artists can make some of the best designers, but the creative side needs to be reined in with structure and organization. Students will benefit from taking advanced math and physics classes, he said.

“Students interested in Engineering Design have to be very self motivated and driven to learn new things. They have to be creative in design and disciplined in production standards,” Lester said.

Surry Community College offers a certificate in Engineering Design, which requires seven classes. The curriculum prepares students to apply technical skills and advanced computer software and hardware to create working drawings, graphic representations and computer simulations for mechanical and industrial designs. Graduates should qualify for employment in mechanical areas such as manufacturing, fabrication, research and development, and service industries.

For more information, contact Engineering Technologies Chairperson Jason Randall at (336) 386-3435 or go to www.surry.edu. Information about the Engineering Design program can also be found at facebook.com/sccengineering.

Scott Lester instructs students at Surry Community College on how to use SOLIDWORKS a computer-aided design software. Students also learn technical drafting such as AutoCAD.

Tax Dollars Set Aside for SCC Training PartnershipIn The Spotlight

The North Carolina Community College System offers a customized training program consisting of education, training and support services for new, expanding and existing business and industry in all of the state’s 100 counties.

Through Surry Community College, companies in Surry and Yadkin counties are assisted with various projects. SCC ranked third in 2014-2015 among the community colleges in the state for the highest number of projects in this program, formally known as the NCWorks Customized Training Program.

In 2008, the N.C. Community College System received legislative approval to not only provide assistance to companies that were creating jobs but to support those eligible companies that were investing in new machinery and equipment, as well as to support the productivity enhancement of the incumbent workforce. Money used to fund this program comes from tax dollars that are set aside for training.

Frankie Vernon is the Human Resources Manager at Nester Hosiery, a state-of-the-art manufacturer in Mount Airy. Vernon has been working with Sam Brim, Business and Industry Services Director at Surry Community College, to provide training to Nester employees.

“Through Surry Community College, we have been able to train 20 people in Microsoft Office, Excel, and Word. Ten people have been certified in CPR, AED and First Aid. Our managers have been able to benefit from an extensive managers training class,” Vernon said.

The corporate-college partnership also allowed Nester Hosiery to receive project dollars that allowed for on-site technical training from Italy, which would have been cost prohibitive otherwise. Nester Hosiery also underwent a safety update for maintenance and housekeeping including blood borne pathogens, electrical safety, forklift safety, lockout/tagout and updated OSHA training through SCC.

“The trainers are excellent. They are not just about academics. They have been out in industry and actually done these things,” Vernon said. “The medical instructors were also paramedics, so they were

all highly trained in their areas. If Sam Brim had not been pushing us, our company would have never gotten all this training. He and his staff have been great to work with. I would highly recommend other companies to reach out to Surry Community College for assistance. It’s been very helpful for us.”

Nathan Lewis is the Human Resource Manager at the Phillips Van Heusen Distribution Center in Jonesville. PVH has a diversified portfolio of brands that are sold internationally including Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger, Van Heusen, IZOD, ARROW, Speedo, Warner’s and Olga.

SCC provided new hire training, lock out/tag out training, OSHA re-certifications, and assisted with updating the company’s HAZCOM policy, as well as conducting an associate survey at PVH.

“Having the partnership with SCC, makes my life easier,” said Lewis. “I know where to go for these training requirements. I can call Surry when I need help, and they are going to have what I need or help me find it. It’s been great, and it’s cost effective. We have not had to pay anything.”

The college helped PVH with a large OSHA update in 2013. “The college helped us pull that off with over 600 associates,” Lewis said. “SCC was great to help us get to where we needed to be. They are great partners to work with, absolutely great.”

Willow Tex, a textile manufacturer and distributor based in Mount Airy, is another company that has benefited from Surry Community College’s Customized Industry Training programs. Debbie Hooker is the Human Resources Manager.

“Surry Community College has been extremely helpful with training and explaining what classes and resources are available,” Hooker said. “Our company conducted ISO 9001 internal auditor training through North Carolina State University at our facility with assistance from Surry Community College.”

Surry has provided Willow Tex with training on OSHA 10, lock out/tag out, confined space entry, first aid, CPR, hazardous waste, forklift training, electrical safety, and Auto CAD among others.

“Sam Brim, the trainers and others at the college have provided a significant service to our company and workforce,” Hooker said. “As an HR manager, they have made my job easier by being able to obtain training for our employees at little to no cost. Training is expensive for a small company, especially when you are just getting started. Surry Community College’s assistance has been very beneficial for our company.”

The goals of SCC’s Customized Industry Training Program are to develop long-term strategic partnerships with business/industry leaders; to assist small business startups and expansions; and to place Surry students into local jobs.

“We want to continue to build strong partnerships with business and industry throughout Surry and Yadkin counties. We want business and industry to reach out to Surry Community College as a first option for training and student resources,” Brim said.

SCC offers support with comprehensive training plans, contingent office/meeting space, record keeping for training, advisory programs, and business support programs.

For more information about SCC’s Customized Training Program, contact Sam Brim at (336) 386-3684 or [email protected].
