We are delighted to set out our extensive range of extra-curricular activities for the 2019

Spring term. We hope that you and your children will enjoy identifying which clubs they

would like to participate in.

MONDAY – Before School Rise and Shine (Y4-6) with Mr Rennie in the Gym Due to the popularity of this club, we operate a reply slip entry as there are only 30 spaces.

Rise and Shine fitness club is a great way to start the day and work on some extra fitness.

Whether you are improving fitness for your sport or just a beginner and want to get more

active, this is a great place to start. All abilities welcome.

MONDAY – Breaktime Y6 Pen Pals with Madame Izard in the MFL room

At Pen Pal Club we take part in e-twinning projects. We create cards and posters to send to

our pen pals around Europe. It is a great way to improve your language skills!

MONDAY – Lunchtime Y5 Boys Hockey with Mr Young on the Astroturf The clubs will focus on developing a variety of skills and playing small sided games where

there will be plenty of ball on stick contact. There will also be an opportunity to learn the

rules of the game in more depth as well as a basic introduction to umpiring. All levels are

very welcome.

Junior Percussion 1 (For Y5 & Y6) with Mr Geary in the Recital Hall For pupils in Y5 and Y6 who take percussion lessons. Y4 & Y5 Dance with Mrs Ridley in the Pre-Prep Hall The club is open to boys and girls and gives them the opportunity to dance to a range of

music genres which culminates in the annual Dance Show at the end of the Spring Term.

Y6 Girls’ Netball with Mrs Webster on the Netball Courts All abilities are welcome to the club, which is fun and enjoyable. It will focus on footwork and movement as well as passing and finding space. We will look at the different positions and the skills required for each position. You will be given the opportunity to try out each position in fun games and gain a sound understanding of the rules. Y2 Ball Skills with Mrs Young and Mr Rennie in the Gym Ball Skills is a club which introduces the children to a wide variety of games which are

designed to develop skills in rolling, catching, throwing and kicking. All abilities are welcome

to the club, which is fun and enjoyable.

Y3 Hockey with Mrs Sutcliffe on the Astroturf

The club looks to build on the new skills being taught in both games and PE lessons and the

opportunity to use them in small sided games where the emphasis is fitness and fun. All

abilities welcome!

Maths Club with Mrs Butcher in 4B (12:45 – 13:15)

Maths Club is a thought provoking, student run club which introduces pupils to the fun side

of maths. It is suitable for all ages and abilities in the Upper Prep, all you need is an interest

in maths. Come along to 4B classroom to meet Mrs Butcher.

Radio Fairfield club with Ms Buchanan in the Library

This exciting new club will have members writing and editing scripts, interviewing, gathering

news from their year group and encouraging/assisting members of other school clubs to

create radio adverts for their club. Year 6 members may receive training on radio equipment

for the recording and editing of material. Initially, due to anticipated high demand, club

participation will involve sending in an application. Ultimately, pupils will produce their own

show each week with guidance and supervision.

MONDAY – After School Brownies (Age 7-10 year olds)* with Mrs Webb-Jenkins in the Eadon Hall Brownies introduces girls to a world of new opportunities, challenges and fun. Girls go along to camps, holidays, day trips and sleepovers. They get together with their friends at regular meetings where they learn new hobbies, get creative, explore other cultures and have outdoor adventures. As well as trying activities in their meetings, girls choose from interest badges related to things they want to know more about. *Please note that there are additional charges for this club. Rainbows (Age 5-7 year olds)* with Mrs Smith in the Busy Room (Year 1) Rainbows is all about developing self-confidence, building friendships, learning new things and having fun. Girls get their hands dirty with arts and crafts, get in touch with nature and play games - it's all about learning by doing. *Please note that there are additional charges for this club. Y5 & Y6 Football with Mr Pitts and Mr Rennie on the field In this club, pupils will have the chance to hone their technical, tactical and footballing skills. They will have game time to apply their skills in competitive matches too. Burton Choristers (until 17:15) with Mr West in the Music Department This choir is for boys from Y4 upwards and is by audition only. Please contact Mr West for more information. Cantamus (until 17:15) with Ms Marsh in the Music Department This choir is for girls from Y5 upwards and is by audition only. Please contact Ms Marsh for more information. Y6 Cookery Club (until 17:15) with Mrs Crookes and Mrs Barraclough in the Food Technology Room The Cookery Club is a course of 8 sessions that runs in the Spring term. Numbers are

limited to a maximum of 14 due to the nature of the activity. Children learn to make a variety

of dishes, both sweet and savoury, incorporating lots of fresh ingredients and an opportunity

to learn new skills. Each week children will take home something tasty to share with their

family. There is a small charge for the club to cover the cost of ingredients.

TUESDAY – Before School Young Strings with Mrs Burns and Mrs Geary in the Music Department This is a group is for violins, cellos and double basses. We play in a lunchtime concert in the Autumn term and perform in another three concerts throughout the year. Players are from around grade 1 upwards. TUESDAY – Lunchtime Running Club with Mr Rennie on the Field

At Running Club we engage in lots of activities to build up stamina and fitness, including timed runs, mini assault courses, relay games, sprints, warm ups and cool downs. We try to increase stamina to be able to run for about 10 minutes continuously.

All the children have the chance to enter the Leicester Primary Schools’ League at Prestwold Hall and some go on to represent Fairfield at Town and County level.

Y6 Girls’ Hockey with Mrs Sutcliffe on the Astroturf The clubs will focus on developing a variety of skills and playing small sided games where

there will be plenty of ball on stick contact. There will also be an opportunity to learn the

rules of the game in more depth as well as a basic introduction to umpiring. All abilities are

very welcome.

Y5 Construction Club with Mrs Saperia in the Science Room

During this club, children will have the opportunity to use construction kits to build models to

develop their understanding of pulleys, gears and levers. If you enjoy making things and

solving problems, this is the club for you!

Brass Group (Y5 & Y6) with Mr Groom in the Music Department

This group is for pupils in Year 5 and Year 6 who play a brass instrument.

Y5 Girls’ Netball with Mrs Lewis on the Netball Courts

All children are welcome to the club. The club will be fun and enjoyable. It will focus on footwork and movement as well as passing and finding space. We will look at the different positions and the skills needed in each. You will be given the opportunity to try out each position in fun games, throughout the block and gain a sound understanding of the rules.

Y1 & Y2 Playground Games with Mrs Smail, Mrs Must and Mrs Cragg, in the Gym

In this very popular club, children will learn and practise playing a range of different traditional playground games, such as Oranges and Lemons in an enjoyable atmosphere. Come and have some fun, learn how to skip individually, with a partner or as a group with our larger rope. Learn some new ball skills and take part in variety of team games which you can then use with your friends at playtime!

Chess for Beginners with Mr Wallace in Mr Caldwell’s classroom

Two Chess club sessions for beginners are held during lunchtimes.

A Chess Coach comes along to run each club, teaching the rudiments of chess in the beginner sessions. There is a cost of £5 per session for these clubs which is payable each term upon registration.

Upper Prep School Council* (fortnightly at 13:00) with Mrs Ridley and Mr Caldwell

(*elected school council reps only) in 2R

In School Council, our elected School Councillors meet to discuss pertinent ways in which to

improve the school. We share and use ideas from our classes to make our school the best it

can be!

TUESDAY – After School Chess for Experts with Mr Wallace in Mr Caldwell’s classroom

We run one Chess session per week for more experienced players after school. A Chess Coach comes along to run each session, teaching more complex play. There is a cost of £5 per session for this club which is payable each term upon registration.

Junior Orchestra (until 16:30) with Mrs Geary and Mrs Watson in the Eadon Hall Junior Orchestra is for string, woodwind, brass players and percussionists who have reached around Grade 2 standard. We rehearse in the Eadon Hall from 15:40 until 16:30. We play in lots of concerts and sometimes play along with older groups too. Junior Wind Band (until 16:30) with Mr Groom in the Music Department Open to wind, brass and percussion players not in the orchestra, from Year 3 to Year 6.

WEDNESDAY – Before School Y3 Violins (08:15 – 08:55) with Mrs Geary in the Music Department This is for Year 3 violinists or for older students who have just started. Flute Group (08:20 – 08:55) with Mrs Gillies-Loach in the Music Department This group is open to flautists in Years 3 to 6. WEDNESDAY – Lunchtime Y6 Boys’ Dance with Mrs Hardy in the Gym. In this club, children have the opportunity to dance to a range of music genres and this

culminates in the annual Dance Show at the end of the Spring Term.

Junior Jazz with Mr Bennett in the Music Department This collective is open to pupils who have passed Grade 1 or higher on their chosen instrument (woodwind, brass and rhythm sections) and are in Year 3 to Year 6. Y3 Pen Pals (fortnightly) with Mrs Capper in 3C Pen Pal Club has formed links with two local care homes and gives children the opportunity to exchange letters with elderly residents. Pen pal friends use first names only and exchange news about their personal interests and day to day lives. In a world dominated by texts, twitters and social media, the children are keen to learn how to set out a letter and eager to write their news. They are even more excited when an envelope arrives back with replies from their elderly friends! Y5 & Y6 Strategy Games with Mrs McGinty in 5L

The Strategy Games Club offers a wide variety of board games for individual, pair and small groups and are available for free choice activities.

Y6 Girls’ Dance with Mrs Hardy in the Gym In this club, children have the opportunity to dance to a range of music genres and this

culminates in the annual Dance Show at the end of the Spring Term.

Y2 Football Club with Mr Prescott on the field The sessions will be on the playing field and provide an ideal opportunity for boys and girls with an interest in football to develop their individual and teamwork skills. The club will run every week but, due to popular demand, the children will be split into two groups and will have their sessions on alternating weeks. WEDNESDAY – After School Chess for Improvers with Mr Wallace in Mr Caldwell’s classroom

We run an ‘improvers’ after school Chess session, for those who are ready to move out of the beginner sessions and are improving their skills. A Chess Coach comes along to run the Chess club, teaching increasingly more sophisticated play in the club. There is a cost of £5 per session for these clubs which is payable each term upon registration.

Y3 & Y4 Tennis with Mr Wilford in the Gym* These fun sessions will be run by LTA qualified coach, Matt Wilford. Players of all abilities are welcome to come along and learn new skills or improve their existing skills. Bring your own racket or you are able to borrow one from school. *A place in this club involves an additional charge. Y4 Art Club with Mrs Parsons in the Art room Joining an after school art club is ideal for any child with a genuine interest in art to try out different techniques and media and so improve their skills. In order to provide a good level of coaching numbers are limited. If demand is high the children may be split into two groups for a half term each. Activities will depend on the year group and will complement their art lessons.

THURSDAY – Before School Rise and Shine with Mr Rennie in the Gym Due to the popularity of this club, we operate a reply slip entry as there are only 30 spaces.

It is a great way to improve your language skills! THURSDAY – Lunchtime Y3 & Y4 Football with Mr Young and Mr Smail on the field In this club, pupils will have the chance to hone their technical, tactical and footballing skills. They will have game time to apply their skills in competitive matches too. Y2 & Y3 Girls’ Dance with Mrs Waldron and Mrs Godwin in the Eadon Hall Year 2 and 3 Dance Club is open to both girls and boys in Year 3 in the Autumn Term. In the Spring Term we invite girls and boys from Year 2 to join us. After a trial of two weeks, we ask for the children to make a commitment to attend the club every week as we are rehearsing for a Dance Show which usually takes place at the end of the Spring Term. Y2 Strategy Games with Mrs Baxter and Mrs Foot in 2B

Strategy Games club is a chance to learn how to play games that make you think. We play a variety of games including Othello, Connect 4, Mastermind and Battleships. They take a few minutes to learn... and a lifetime to master! So come and try out your skill - can you outwit your friends? Y3 & Y4 Strategy Games with Mrs Coombes in Mrs Earnshaw’s classroom

Y5 & Y6 Computer Club with Mr Booth in the Computing Suite During Computer Club, we develop our programming skills, enhance our creative use of

technology and aim to improve our computational thinking capability. If you want to get

ahead in Computing, this is the club for you!

Y4-Y6 Fairfield Young Singers club with Ms Marsh in the Music Room

We will be singing a mixture of songs from the UK and around the world, old and new. There

will be rounds, canons, part-songs, games and fun – and we will sing our debut concert in

early April! There are no auditions – this is for anyone who loves singing!

Y6 Football with Mr Pitts on the field In this club, pupils will have the chance to hone their technical, tactical and footballing skills. They will have game time to apply their skills in competitive matches too. Y1 Story Time with Mrs Mills in 1M

Children can choose to come on the day of the club and do not need to save a place. It’s a

wonderful time to relax, listen to, talk about and enjoy a good story, where we explore a

range of children’s authors and themes.

THURSDAY – After School Create Club (Reception children only, until 16:30), run by Mrs Judith Coles from the Creation Station and children are escorted by Mrs Hampton. Do you like getting messy? Create Club explores science through art, with lots of creative and messy activities to get involved in. It is held in the 4th Reception Classroom after school each Thursday from 15:30 to 16:30. The Create Club is limited to 15 children per half term and places will be allocated on a first come first served basis. Please note that there is a charge for this club.

Joining an after school art club is ideal for any child with a genuine interest in art to try out different techniques and media and so improve their skills. In order to provide a good level of coaching numbers are limited. If demand is high the children may be split into two groups for a half term each. Activities will depend on the year group and will complement their art lessons. Y3 & Y4 Football with Mr Pitts, Mr Rennie and Mr Caldwell on the field In this club, pupils will have the chance to hone their technical, tactical and footballing skills. They will have game time to apply their skills in competitive matches too. Forest School with Mrs Alves in the Fairfield Outdoor Learning Area (OLA) This club takes place in the Outdoor Learning Area at Fairfield. Due to the popularity of this club and also the relatively limited space, this club runs on a ‘sign-up’ process at the beginning of each term, with the children being split into two groups. Children will be taught various outdoor skills such as toasting on the fire pit, and using various tools such as the bow saw and bill hook. They will also have the opportunity to choose from a variety of activities each week such as orienteering, shelter building, bug hunting, pond dipping, planting, outdoor crafts and building traps, to name but a few. Due to limited space in the OLA, children need to sign up at the start of each term (on the list on Mrs Alves’ door) and they will be put into groups if needed. Each group will run for a set number of weeks throughout the term. Parents will be informed of groups by Schoolcomms. Y4-Y6 Triathlon (until 17:15 and featuring Saturday morning sessions) – paid club, with Mrs Sutcliffe in the LSF Pool and Fairfield Gymnasium* This club is run in conjunction with the other Foundation Schools. Available for children from Years 4-6, the club aims to develop the skills used in the three disciplines of swimming, running and cycling. The sessions are challenging yet fun. There is a required standard of swimming to enable participation. There will be opportunities to compete at Triathlon events. Thursday (Swimming) 16:15 – 17:15 Saturday (Running, cycling and swimming) 08:30 – 10:30 *There is an additional charge for this club. Y3 Computer Club with Mr Boothe in the IT Suite During the club, we will develop pupils’ programming skills, enhance their creative use of

technology and aim to improve computational thinking capability.

Year 1 Little Wickets Cricket* in the Gym Little Wickets is more than just learning to bat, bowl and field. The Spirit of Cricket is delivered by enthusiastic and qualified coaches; focusing on the ‘FUNdamentals of Movement’ to develop individual skills, teamwork and fair play. The children pick up essential life skills whilst having fun and receiving first class Cricket training. Beavers (16:15 – 17:15) with Mrs Hobson in the Scout Hut

During their time in the Colony, Beaver Scouts will get a chance to try a wide range of different activities as well as going on trips, days out, and on sleepovers. Participation, rather than meeting set standards, is the key approach, and there are a range of badges and challenge awards that Beaver Scouts can gain to recognise their achievements. FRIDAY – Before School Burton Choristers (08:15 – 08:55) with Mr West in the Music Department This choir is for boys in Year 5 to Year 9 across the Foundation, who have unchanged voices. there will be plenty of ball on stick contact. There will also be an opportunity to learn the

Y5 Girls’ Football with Mr Wilbraham on the field This an opportunity for the girls to learn key skills and have lots of fun. The game is played

competitively at the High School so this might be a good option for those who want to

explore an alternative sport.

Guitar Group with Miss Richardson in the Music Department

This group rehearses from 12:15-12:45 in MS5. The group plays in a concert in January, and joins with older players to play in a large group sometimes too. This club is open to pupils in Years 5 and 6 who take guitar lessons. Y6 Basketball with Mr Pitts in the Gym The Basketball club on Friday lunchtimes is open to both boys and girls in Year 6. It is a

team sport that can develop not only individual ball handling skills but also teamwork,

leadership, confidence and self-esteem.

Soundbites with Mrs Marsh in the Pre-Prep Hall At Soundbites, our musicians at Fairfield have the opportunity to perform their pieces to an enthusiastic and positive crowd of parents, staff and fellow pupils. Pupils taking lessons at school must sign up via their instrumental teacher. Pupils taking lessons outside of school must sign up via Ms Marsh.

Reeds Group with Mrs Watson in the Music Department This group is for pupils in Years 5 and 6 who play the saxophone or clarinet.

Y3 Bananagrams with Mr Moseley in 3M

Fancy getting one of your five a day? Fancy yourself as a super speller? Fancy ‘monkeying

around’ whilst developing your spelling skills? Well if the answer to these questions is yes,

then Bananagrams is for you! Bananagrams Club is where we play the fun-filled word game

of Bananagrams. Use your tiles to spell words and then try and join them in a crossword

before your friends do so you can be Top Banana! Learn new words, apply your spelling

skills and most importantly have lots of fun with friends!

Harp Ensemble with Miss Vermuelen in the Music Department This ensemble is for pupils who take harp lessons with at least one term’s playing experience. FRIDAY – After School Cubs (16:00 – 17:30) with Mrs Hobson at the Scout Hut Cub Scouts will get a chance to try a wide range of different activities as well as going on trips, days out, and on camps. Participation and personal development, rather than meeting set standards, is the key approach, and there are a range of badges and challenge awards that Cub Scouts can gain to recognise their achievements. Fairfield Prep School has successfully been running an extra curricular gymnastics club for several years now with the help of Rob Payne and his company 360 Gymnastics UK. Each Friday after school sees pupils work alongside Rob as he challenges them to develop their gymnastic skill set and confidence. A former International gymnast himself, Rob delivers inclusive sessions that develop pupils body awareness and physical ability to perform floor and vault gymnastic skills and combinations. The club is quick to fill up with many pupils returning to the club each term.

Scouts (17:45 – 19:30) for pupils in Y5 and Y6, plus Senior School pupils with Mrs Hobson at the Scout Hut Scouts are encouraged to take part in a wide range of activities as part of their programme including traditional Scouting skills, such as camping, survival and cooking, as well as a wider spectrum of adventurous activities, from abseiling to zorbing. Participation rather than meeting set standards is the key approach, and there are a number of badges and awards that Scouts can gain to recognise their achievements.

Y5 & Y6 Hockey Herons (beginning after February half-term, until 17:15), with Mrs Sutcliffe and Mr Clarke (LGS) on the Astroturf – paid club for boys and girls* This club is run in conjunction with the other Foundation Schools. It is a mixed club for children in Years 5 and 6, where the emphasis is on small-sided games and plenty of ball time. The activities help develop hockey skills and team play within a fun environment. *Please note that there is an additional charge for this club.
