Fridays, March 29 and April 5 & 12, 20191:00 pm – 2:30 pmHigh Learning & Wellness Center, Landis HomesEnrollment Limit: 60

Springtime – or anytime – is a great time to visit the charming cities of Beauford, SC; Savannah, GA; and Charleston, SC. First stop is Beauford where draperies of Spanish moss on the trees bid welcome to this magical city by the bay. Its majestic mansions served as sets for motion pictures such as “The Prince of Tides,” “The Big Chill,” and “The Great Santini.”Then on to Savannah, that graceful lady high on the bank above the river – remember “Moon River”? In springtime the flowering azaleas give a special brilliance to the city. Of course, Savannah’s Spanish moss gives a ghostly feeling to its cemeteries. And who can forget the mysterious tale of “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.” Our tour concludes in charming Charleston, where the Atlantic Ocean is said to begin! Its quaint streets, beautiful gardens, and stately mansions dazzle the senses – Charleston provided the setting for Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess” and “North and South” among others. A survivor of the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, and storms such as Hurricane Hugo, we, too, shall survive to return to Landis Homes.

LH34RUNAWAY BRIDES, HAPLESS MALES & THE EVER HUMOROUS ROMANTIC BATTLE OF THE SEXES: A ROMP THROUGH HOLLYWOOD’S MADCAP SCREWBALL COMEDIES OF THE 1930s AND 1940sInstructor: Dr. Roger A. Godin

Thursdays, March 7, 14, 21, and 28, 20191:30 pm – 3:30 pmHigh Learning & Wellness Center, Landis HomesEnrollment Limit: 60

From the mid-1930s until the mid-1940s, the heyday of the Hollywood Studio Era, a genre of rapidly paced movies emerged depicting strong female characters. These women slyly dominated their romantic relationships with males, challenging their masculinity, causing lots of fun, laughter and love to ensue. These “Screwball” comedies provided a unique slant on romance and love, putting more of an emphasis on spoofing the traditional male-female relationship. These fun, fast-paced movies included rapid-fire witty repartee, farcical situations, masquerades and hilarious plot lines involving courtship and marriage.Throughout this course we will be entertained by watching a large sampling of hysterically funny, uproarious, and comic scenes that illuminate the timeless “boy meets girl” scenario of life. Watching these joyful scenes, showcasing many of Hollywood’s great stars of that era, will provide a heart-warming therapy of sheer laughter that will make us all healthier and (maybe) just a bit wiser!
