There is still a few open items that need to be completed which is being worked on.New security cameras were installed on the dock .The purpose of the cameras is to track and bill transients that dock when the harbor is not staffed and to make sure that harbor rules regarding loading/unloading freight at the dock is in compliance. The cameras are also to monitor Tony’s barge as well as Coastline use to catch and bill any other uses not within the constraints of the freight and garbage contractsDredging:Dredging will take place again this season during our allotted time under our permit May 16th – May 29th. The Home Stretch – Really!

Mother Nature fired her first, very powerful warning shot on August 26, 2011—Hurricane Irene. Very soon thereafter, FIPPOA relaunched the Seashore Defense Fund (SDF) in recognition that our dunes and beaches—our most precious resource—were at serious risk. No beaches, no dunes, no Fire Island Pines. We rallied. We responded with a massive beach scraping. We installed thousands of feet of sand fencing and planted thousands of grass seedlings. We continued the work to fill SDF’s coffers knowing that Mother Nature has a mind of her own. October 29, 2012—Superstorm Sandy—the second-costliest hurricane in United States

history. The Pines was devastated but we fought back. While homeowners rebuilt, SDF and FIPPOA focused on the dune and our beaches. Working with local government we

once again installed sand fencing, planted grass, cleaned the beaches of tons of debris and found yet another temporary solution—our now famous TrapBags! To this day, TrapBags remain our temporary but most effective barrier between the ocean and the

dune. They have taken a beating but they keep on ticking. For six years, FIPPOA and SDF have worked tirelessly; pushing for the FIMI (Fire Island to Moriches Inlet) dunes reclamation project to be completed. Financed with $60

million in federal funding; once completed the Pines and all our sister Fire Island communities will be sitting behind a new dune built on a scale that dwarfs any beach reclamation project in the past. The good news—we are in the home stretch! The modifications of our beachfront owners’ properties have been approved and are underway. Work on them began early this spring in advance of the sand replenishment which will happen over the late winter/early spring 2019. The Pines will have the largest manmade barrier between it and the Atlantic since its founding in the early1950s.

However, it is not yet time to celebrate. We need to remain vigilant and commit ourselves to doing everything in our power to prepare, preserve and protect our new dune once it is installed. How will we do that? Four back-to-back nor’easters damaged 1,700 feet of TrapBags. We’ve been asked, “Why replace them now if a huge sand

replenishment is on its way?” Simple answer: “What if we don’t take the steps, and Mother Nature (always fickle) takes another whack at us.” The stakes are too high to try. Along with newly installed TrapBags in the fall (in time for peak of the hurricane season), new sand fencing will replace that lost along the entire length of the damaged areas. We will continue to raise community awareness of the fragility of our dune and how each of us can work to protect it.

There is one thing above all that each of us can do. We must commit ourselves, our friends, renters, and visitors to our community to the one action that, more than any other, will preserve the dune: WE MUST KEEP OFF THE DUNES. Nothing is more damaging to the health of the dune than your feet. Each footstep destroys the vegetation and weakens the dune. Don’t mess with Mother Nature.

The 2018 hurricane season will soon be upon us (predicted to be worse than last year’s.) Support the Seashore Defense Fund with your dollars and by pledging to be personally responsible for keeping the dune healthy—now and in the future. Check out our website and consider a donation, too. http://seashoredefensefund.org. Or, purchase a SDF tote bag at The Pantry or some wine at The Pines Liquor Shop. Both have partnered with us and championed our cause since the beginning. Thank you!

Every time you take a few extra steps to reach the beach by a public access stairway take pride that you are supporting the Seashore Defense Fund. You are an active soldier in the ongoing battle to save our dune and community.

Happy summer!

TO: The FIPPOA Membership FROM: Chief Joe Geiman DATE: May 19, 2018 RE: Spring Meeting I would like to welcome everyone back to another great season in Fire Island Pines. As I begin my term as Chief of Department, I would like to thank the great men and women of the Fire Island Pines Fire Department. Their dedication and service to this community should be applauded by us all. I would also like to thank Ex-Chief Michael Greenberg for his dedicated service to the fire department. Michael ends his term as Chief with over 15 years of service with our fire department. 9 years of that service as either a Company Line Officer or Chief Officer. I would also like to congratulate Firefighter, former Fire Department Treasurer and former Fire District Commissioner William Haberman for 50 years of service in our Fire Department. At almost 95, Bill has achieved this tremendous milestone with our fire department. And we thank him for the history and the knowledge that he continues to pass on to us. In 2017 there were 58 alarms reported for Fire Island Pines: 5 – Structure Fires; 1 – Outside Brush; 5 – Electrical Hazards; 6 – Hazardous Conditions (Gas Leaks); 1 – Chief’s Investigations; 4 – Water Rescue / Medical Emergency; 1 – Boat Fire; 1 – BBQ Fire; 12 – Residential Automatic Alarms; 12 – Commercial Automatic Alarms; and 10 – Mutual Aid calls to Neighboring Fire Departments. A reminder that Hurricane Season will be upon us soon. And Hurricane Season does not end until November 30th. It is important that everyone make themselves familiar with our communities Hurricane Preparedness Plan. If you would like to obtain a copy of the Plan, please go to our website at www.fipfd.org and click on Hurricane Prep to download a copy. Our 22 Water Rescue Bags will be in place before Memorial Day. In the event of a water emergency, please follow the instructions on the Water Rescue Boxes. This year the fire department will continue its rigorous training program for all our Firefighters and new Fire Auxiliary members. Training’s will be conducted by all our current and former Fire Officer’s and will be located throughout the community. There will be a total of twenty-three (23) drills in Fire Island Pines, our neighboring communities and at the Suffolk County Fire Academy in Yaphank. Drills will continue throughout the remainder of the 2018 season ending in mid October. So, we apologize in advance for any inconvenience we may cause residents during our training sessions. Your fire department continues looking for new members to serve as Firefighters or Fire Auxiliary members. Our recruitment drive is always looking for more good men and women. Five new members were added to the fire department roster last year, and one more is already pending this season. Remember, we are an all volunteer fire department. So, if you think that you have what it takes to be a member of the Fire Island Pines Fire Department call us at 597-6860 and leave a message or visit us at our website at www.fipfd.org and click on Join the Department. Fire Island Pines Fire Department Annex - 32 Lone Hill Walk

We are currently in our 2nd year of a five-year bond purchase for the property. The Annex was purchased through a referendum of the voting members of the community, back in the summer of 2016. As you may recall, the Annex was purchased for $600,000.00. It is perfectly situated adjacent to the Firehouse.

As the Fire District looks toward the future protection of our community, with less volunteers coming forward to train, the District might have to consider employing paid Fire Fighters/EMTs.. If and when that should be deemed necessary, the Annex will be the station to house the paid staff. At present the Annex will currently serve as office space for the chiefs, a comfortable place to host department/officer meetings. Most importantly, it is a place where our volunteer firefighters and Auxiliary members can relax after attending required training drills and responding to the numerous alarms throughout the season.

As an added benefit to the purchase, if at a time in the future, we actually do

have adequate volunteers and continue to attract new members, we have the ability of selling the property, and returning the proceeds back to the taxpayers.

New Fire Island Boulevard sidewalk

During the fall season, Superintendent Daniel P Losquadro from the Town of Brookhaven Highway Department responded to the Fire District’s request to repair the sidewalk in front of the Fire Department. The new concrete sidewalk was elevated several inches with a slope onto Burma Road for the department’s emergency vehicles. The District is happy to report that despite the heavy rains that occurred this spring season, there was no accumulation of mud and debris from flooding in front of the firehouse. This will also afford the western residents a dry path as they pass the Firehouse. The Town of Brookhaven Highway Department beach crew were commended for a job well done!

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

As the Pines Care Center (PCC) starts its 37th season, we want to thank the community for its

generous support, which enables the continued provision of routine medical services in the

Pines.

This year we have commitments from doctors to offer their services almost continually, starting

earlier than usual (May 18th) and running through the end of September. We continue to offer

services and many medications at the PCC free-of-charge, a direct result of your request and

generosity. In 2017, 16 paid doctors saw approximately 500 patients in the clinic, while they

also attended to many out-of-office calls.

As most of you know, the PCC relies on the Pines community for financial support. We ask

that you make a contribution to the PCC. You can make a contribution on our website,

pinescarecenter.org, or you can mail in your contribution using the attached form, or you drop

the form off at the Doctor’s Office at 577 Coast Guard Walk.

If you’re acknowledged in our website’s report (and recent mailing) as one of our supporters in

2017, we sincerely thank you and hope you will continue your commitment this year. If you

have not contributed in the past, we encourage you to join your neighbors and service

providers who help ensure that we are able to enjoy our time in the Pines with the peace of

mind in knowing that medical services are nearby if needed.

Remember, if you have an emergency, please remember to call 911 first, and then the

doctor at PCC at (631) 597–6160. Our doctors will be available for routine office visits most

days in the summer season from 11 a.m. to noon, and from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.

We thank you for your generous support, and best wishes for a healthy 2018 summer!

Dear Friends & Neighbors, On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Fire Island Pines Arts Project (FIPAP), I want to welcome you back to the Pines. Our 2018 season starts off with our extremely popular Unplugged Series. We begin on May 19 with our first Unplugged at 5pm with Metropolitan Opera Mezzo-soprano Rihab Chaieb and MET accompanist Bryan Wagorn. We continue our joint venture with Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, Broadway Bares Fire Island on June 2. Always a special event, those scantily clad boys and girls return for a show created especially for the Pines. Show times are 7PM and 9PM. On Saturday, June 16, put your gambling hats on for a Casino Night at Whyte Hall. Rat Pack Casino Night will offer Blackjack, Poker, Craps, Roulette and Wheel of Chance from 6pm to 10pm. There will be a prize for the biggest winner of the evening along with a raffle. The more you win, the more chances you have of winning a prize! On July 1 at 5pm, continues our Unplugged collaboration with Harry Inglis with music for string trio. On August 4 at 5pm, we will showcase Brazilian Singer/Songwriter Aline Muniz, and on August 18th at 5pm, we welcome Broadway Vocalist Daniel Reichard to the Pines. And finally, on Labor Day Weekend, FIPAP presents THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW, a musical with music, lyrics and book by Richard O'Brien. Rocky Horror is a humorous tribute to the science fiction and horror B movies of the late 1940s through to the early 1970s. Performances are on August 31 at 8pm, and September 1 & 2 at 6pm. FIPAP sadly lost one of our own this past winter. Rita Lichtenstein was one of our original members of FIPAP and graced our stage many times throughout the years. Her light and love will be missed. FIPAP is always looking for volunteers to help with our many projects. There are many behind-the-scenes tasks like assisting with ticket sales, helping out at Whyte Hall with the show, or just cleaning up after one of our events. If you would like to get involved, please visit our website at fipap.org. There is also information on our website on how to become a sponsor or underwriter of FIPAP. We look forward to seeing you at a FIPAP event this summer!!! Best wishes, Steven Alan Black, President

We are very excited as the Pines celebrates another historic moment with the 20th Anniversary of the

Pines Party. We have spent much of the winter building our website pineshistory.org. It continues to

grow as we reach out to the world so people not only can learn about this magical place we call home,

but former residents and visitors can remember their time here with fondness. Our most popular posts

are about historic homes. Every home has a history. If your home has a history you know of please

contact us. As we move into our 8th year we again celebrate our legendary Tea Dance with our event

called "Souvenirs" the weekend of July 6th held at the Blue Whale where it all began. Legendary DJ

Robbie Leslie again joins us as he teams up with some of our working DJ's to create a cross generational

event. We also will be having an exhibit called "Where Ocean meets Sky" A vintage display of aerial

photos of the Pines in early June. We look forward to archiving another year of Pines history as we help

to create the future with the past...

Spring 2018

Dear Fire Island Pines Neighbors:

The Greater Fire Island Pines Chamber is a group of select businesses supporting the growth of

the Pines Community. The organization was incorporated in 2002 and currently consists of over

46 local businesses, all duly licensed and insured at time of membership if applicable. All

members of the Greater Fire Island Pines Chamber of Commerce are dedicated to serving the

needs of the community by providing essential professional services and supporting the

community’s infrastructure.

In addition to each individual member so serving the community through their vocations, the

Greater Fire Island Pines Chamber of Commerce seeks to provide the community with advocacy

and a liaison with local officials, to help the community realize important goals and to enhance

the environment within which we work.

During the last year the Chamber has worked closely with members of the FIPPOA Boulevard

Committee in organizing and enhancing the contractor areas along FI Boulevard. In 2018, we

have already hosted a community meet and greet Kentucky Derby party and will be sponsoring a

second event in September.

The Greater Fire Island Pines Chamber welcomes you to the 2018 Season and looks forward to

continuing our work within the community.

Sincerely,

PJ McAteer

President
