Governor’s Message By Graham Morey—Indiana Society Governor

Taking the helm from Governor Jack Buck will be no easy task. With our dedicated Board, however, I expect there will be a successful voyage for the Indiana Society. Special thanks to Chuck Provost who stepped up to replace our former Treasurer, Karen Mitchell, on short notice and Rebecca Gaddy who replaced Jon Wardlow as full-time His-torian. Jon remains the Assistant Historian and Jean Perney will serve as a genealogy consultant. Also welcome to new Board members: Deb Givan (Alonso), Lilli Swenson, and Dr. Norman Oestrike.

Good news! Your donations and our investment growth have been sufficient to increase our scholarship awards to $3,000, nearly as much as before the 2008 economic slowdown. We received seven applications this year. Win-ners will be announced at our Spring Luncheon on Saturday, April 9, 2011.

Our Governor General Judy Swan will be the speaker for our Spring Membership Luncheon. Judy has Hoosier connections, being a mem-ber of the Society of Indiana Pioneers and married to an Indianapolis native, Phil Swan. Also visiting us will be two other General Society guests: Harry Folger III, Assistant Governor General, and Alice Teal, editor of the Mayflower Quarterly. Make your reservations early for this special event. God Bless Us All,

Graham Morey,

Governor

MEET OUR NEW GOVERNOR—Graham Morey

Our new Governor, Graham Denby Morey, had known of possible connections to the Mayflower, but not for sure until late 1999. He had been working on lineage papers using Rev. James Fitch as his ancestor for Colonial Wars. One day their registrar called to ask,

“Do you know who your 7th great grandmother was?” She was Mary Brewster, great granddaughter of Elder William Brewster, who married Samuel Fitch, son of Rev. James Fitch. Armed with that info, Graham eventually joined the Indiana Society in June 2000.

Graham has previously served as Treasurer (2001-2009) and Deputy Governor (2009-2010). He has also represented the ISMD at the national meetings since 2004. He has served both as the Assistant Governor-Indiana and Deputy Governor General-Indiana at

these meetings.

Outside of ISMD, Graham has been quite active in numerous lineage and veterans organizations. He is or has been an officer within the Knights of Columbus, American Legion, Sons of the American Revolution, Sons of Union Veterans, Colonial Wars, and War of 1812. Currently, he’s also Governor of the Sons & Daughter of the Pilgrims, Indiana Branch. Pilgrim Elder Brewster

GOVERNOR’S FUND

What is the Governor’s Fund? What is it for? Why do we need it? These are questions which you may be asking. The fund is used to cover operating expenses. Money is needed for such projects as printing the newsletter or invita-tions, postage, speaker or program costs, rental of audio visual equipment, purchas-ing medals, etc. Please consider making a donation to the Governor’s Fund to off-set these expenses. You may use the coupon at the bottom of page 2.

Meet Our New Historian: Rebecca Gaddy Born and raised in Indiana, after college and one year of teaching, I left the state—not so much for adventure as for a

career not involving teaching, nursing or insurance which were the primary fields for women in the 1960’s and 1970’s. My first stop was New York City where I worked in advertising and managed to live in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens in one year! From there I travelled across country to Los Angeles for a 13 year stint. There I began my

23 year publishing career, working for such publications as Architectural Digest, Bon Appetit, Oui and Los Angeles Magazine.. From there I moved to Chicago and worked for a color separator and then Spiegel catalog company. After ten years in Chicago publishing took a downturn, so I moved back to Indy for two years, working at Pewter Junction. My wanderlust took me back to Pasadena, CA; this time I worked for a printer. Another downturn in this industry led

me to go back to school; I studied television operations at Pasadena City College. After a year in the television industry I was given an opportunity to teach television operations and production at Pasadena City College. I did this for seven years as an assistant adjunct professor.

In 2006 I returned to Indy to help care for my mother, Claire Long, who died last October due to complications from MS. Shortly after her death, my sister invited me to the Mayflower luncheon. I walked away renewing my membership and volunteering for the Historian position. By nature I have an interest in

history, but I would never have considered myself a genealogy buff. My grandmother, Pauline Woodward, was the genealogist in the family. She succeeded in documenting the family history of both my maternal grandfather and father; both traced back to the Pilgrim Isaac Allerton.

When I was eleven, I remember going to Washington, D.C. with my grandmother. I was looking forward to sightseeing, but was sorely disappointed. I saw the Washington and Lincoln monuments from afar. I spent my nights at the YWCA. We ate at the Mayflower Hotel once. The rest of the time was spent in

the National Archives where I did get to see the Declaration Independence and many records. Two things really impressed me: the fierce protection sys-tem for the Declaration of Independence and the number of people listed in the census who had no names. Looking at microfilm was not boring but re-quired a lot of sitting—difficult for an eleven year old.

Perhaps this genealogy gene has finally worked its way to the surface. I am enjoying communicating with Mayflower applicants and am amazed by the

intricacy of the documentation required for membership in the society. This makes me admire the efforts of my grandmother.

The Mayflower Dogs In Mourt’s Relation, (1622) Edward Winslow has left a re-cord of at least two dogs who participated in the settling of Plymouth Colony. He tells us a mastiff and a spaniel were involved in the first explorations of discovery on Cape Cod and the activities of homebuilding during the first winter ashore. Although there may have been other pets aboard Mayflower during her historic voyage, they are not men-tioned. This information came from an awesome website you can access through a google search: The Pilgrims and Plymouth Colony 1620.
