Dear Parents/Guardians,

School Camps Set to Resume

School camps can reopen from 11.59pm on 21 June, aligned with the opening of holiday accommodation

communal facilities, including shared kitchens and bathrooms.

The Victorian Chief Health Officer has advised that accommodation providers, including privately operated school

camps and outdoor education schools and camps operated by individual schools and the Department of Education

and Training, can accept school group bookings consistent with typical class/year level sizes and are not bound by

public gathering limits. Health and safety precautions will be required.

Further advice and health and safety precautions for camp operators and schools will be provided in a DET update

tomorrow.

The precautions will include advice about:

sleeping arrangements

hygiene practices and cleaning of facilities

physical distancing among adults

camp operators undertaking risk assessments and planning

the involvement of parent volunteers.

Congratulations Mrs Smart!

I would like to congratulate Mrs Smart and her husband Chris on the delightful news that they are expecting a baby

in December. This means that Mrs Smart will start her family leave in early Term 4. I wish them both well as they

edge closer to an exciting addition to their family.

We are currently communicating with Miss Floyd in the UK about the possibility of her taking over Mrs Smart’s

class. Miss Floyd is due to return to our school next year but she is very keen to return in time to support our school

and Mrs Smart’s children. This would be a great outcome as Miss Floyd is very familiar with our school and our

junior department.

School Council Summary

Our June School Council meeting was held on Monday. Many items were discussed and/or ratified, including:

Remote Learning/Return to School

An update on our return to school was provided, including the very successful return of our Grade 3-6 children. All

families and staff members are demonstrating some additional caution when it comes to illness. All current hygiene

measures are being well supported by all students.

School Review

Our School Review that was scheduled for Term 3 will now take place in Term 4. We will use Term 3 to gather

feedback from our students and parents. In particular, we will aim to capture what we are doing well as a school (so

we can keep doing these things) and where some opportunities exist to make improvements.

Curriculum Days

Permission was gained to reschedule our previously approved Literacy Professional Development curriculum day

from 30th April to 31st July (Week 3, Term 3). Our Mathematics Professional Development curriculum day with

George Booker, which was scheduled for 29th May, is yet to be rescheduled. Our Assessment and Reporting

curriculum day for 11th November remains unchanged.

SRC Representatives

All SRC representatives were finalised on Friday. Student Voice is planned to have a much bigger role in 2020 and

our SCR will be a big part of this.

Music in the Hub

We have been having fun utilising the new speakers in The Hub. Our SRC have been asked how they would like to

utilise the speakers during the year e.g. at lunchtime, recess, hosting talent shows on a Friday, etc.

Fresh Fruit Friday

Emma, our Parent Club President, has been able to secure the return of Fresh Fruit Friday. This return will be from

the start of Term 3. I’m sure our children (and parents) will be happy to see this program return.

Compass Learning Tasks

Learning Tasks will recommence in term 3. There will be new Learning Tasks posted in Compass approximately

every 2-3 weeks. The tasks will be Literacy Skills, Mathematics, Cold Write (narrative based) and Topic Work.

Canteen Update

School Council is close to finalising arrangements for our canteen to reopen. We have been communicating with

Fresh 5 Bendigo and the Greater City of Bendigo to work through lots of issues, including compliance, a menu,

pricing, payment methods, days of operations, etc.

It is likely that the canteen would initially operate one day per week and then be evaluated to potentially increase to

two days per week.

We are hoping that this service will commence at some stage during Term 3. Further details will be made available

soon.

Shade Sails

We are still anticipating that the shade sails will be erected in the upcoming school holidays.

Line Markings

Mr Smith has designed some new line markings to go on the new asphalt between the top and bottom oval. These

line marking will take place later this year when the weather is warmer.

Playgrounds

Quotes are currently being obtained to replace the edging and soft fall on the playgrounds at the top of the school.

School Council may also consider rubber matting/surfacing as a long-term solution, depending on cost,

environmental factors, drainage, etc.

Prep Enrolments 2021 DET advice regarding school tours remains the same and we are currently not permitted to conduct tours of the

school at the present time.

I still intend to conduct individual school tours for families when restrictions are lifted. I am hopeful that this will

take place at the start of Term 3. Please contact the school office on 5443 7230 or via

email [email protected] to record your interest. You will be contacted as soon as tours are

possible.

Prep enrolments for 2021 close on Friday, 31st July. Parents will be notified of the outcome of their application

within a week of the closing date.

Please visit our website (https://www.sgps.vic.edu.au/articles/99) for further details, including a presentation,

videos, photos and other important documents.

Social Distancing of Adults Thanks so much to our parents and carers that have been dropping off their children since school resumed. You

have all done a wonderful job. A reminder that visitors to the school grounds are still limited to those delivering or

supporting essential school services and operations.

Parents should not enter classrooms until further notice, unless prior approval has been given, but please feel free to

email or phone if there is something you need assistance with. Parents must also continue to be conscious of not

congregating outside the school grounds at the beginning and end of each school day. Once again, everyone is

doing a great job with this.

Our staff greatly appreciate the support we are receiving regarding these DET guidelines.

A Word of Thanks from DET Attached is a letter from Jenna Atta, Secretary for the Department of Education and Training.

Please have a read, as Jenny, on the behalf of DET, is thanking parents for their efforts during remote

learning. This is a nice touch, given we all know how challenging recent months have been and how families have

met the challenges and supported their schools along the way.

Our school community has certainly been amazing during this period.

Francis Trezise

Principal ([email protected])

From the Assistant Principal This week’s e-safe topic: Did You Know You Can Report Cyber Bullying? The eSafety Commissioner, provisioned by the Australian Federal Government, provides a pathway for anyone

under the age of 18 to report cyber bullying. Follow the link for steps to make a report:

Your Child’s Report for Semester 1

As Mr Trezise has mentioned previously, due to the circumstances around remote learning, it has not been possible

for teachers to write reports in the same manner that they usually would. The remote learning environment has also

not allowed us to continue with Learning Tasks in Term 2, meaning that families will have received four Learning

Tasks this semester instead of the usual seven.

Student Reports this semester have been designed to provide general commentary around your child’s achievements

in their learning and share insight into how your child has engaged in their learning during Term 1. Teachers have

also commented on observations during remote learning and how students have settled back into school since

returning this term. Semester 1 Reports will be released via Compass next Thursday 25th June. Paper copies will

only be provided upon request.

Active Travel News Well done to everyone who has been riding, walking and scooting to school in the cold weather we’ve had since

classes returned. Tingling fingers and pink noses are all worth it for the all-over body buzz you feel when you’ve

been active in the fresh air!

Although I haven’t been able to come in for WoW Wednesday counts, it’s been great to see parents and kids

walking to/from school as well as kids travelling independently. Keep it up

WoW Wednesday counts are back!

WoW Wednesday counts look like starting up again soon – thanks to our student leaders. So keep riding, walking

or scooting for your class!

Stay bright

With winter solstice nearly upon us, there’s not always much light around in the mornings. Being bright and visible

is so important. My kids and I have flashing lights on their bikes every time we’re riding on roads (even during the

day). You can buy battery-powered rear flashing lights from Target for under $10, and USB rechargeable ones from

bike shops. They’re easy to slip off into your bag once you reach your destination.
