    Dear Calvary,

    Happy birthday to us.

    This Spring weve beenhighlighting 150 years of being a church here on thecorner of 8th & H streets inWashington, D.C. 150 yearsis a lot of yearsit makesme think of when mychildren were in elementaryschool and were assigned to

    bring in 100 of something to celebrate the 100 th day of school. Perhaps I should assign everyoneto bring 150 friends to church on June 3?

    There will, indeed, be many friends from Calvaryspast and present joining us over the gala weekendas we celebrate 150 years, but how can we fullyappreciate the gift of all of these years, longer than any one human life, long enough toencompass many lives, even your life and mine?The foresight and faithfulness that planted achurch on this corner has meant that in some way,some how, this community has been for us each ameans of gracea glimpse of God.

    From important public figures wieldinginternational power to people scraping the bottomof life, Calvary has been a place to welcome usall, a place where we could do the messy work of community as we try to live the way of Jesus.

    I am looking forward to seeing so many of youwhose lives have been touched by this place, andwhose investment of time and resources hasinsured that Calvary continues as a vitalcommunity dedicated to living out the Gospel.Please join us as we celebrate together 150 yearsof being the church!

    Looking forward tocelebrating with you,

    Pastor Amy

    Moving Forward in 2012Ken Butler, Chairman

    Calvary Board of Trustees

    The new Calvary Baptist Church Board of Trustees held its organizational meeting onJanuary 22, 2012, and elected the followingofficers:

    Ken Butler, Chairman Amanda Butler, Vice Chair Ellen Sulerzyski, SecretaryBarbara Hoffer, Treasurer

    The Board expresses its deep appreciation for Phil Renfrow who Chaired the Trustees for the lasttwo years and whose service has been invaluablefor moving Calvary forward. We intend to keepthe momentum going throughout 2012 as wecelebrate our 150th Anniversary and deal with themany issues and challenges to our church facilityand congregation that comes with being inexistence for such a long time.

    Our major goals for 2012 include the following:

    1. Conduct a major study to ascertain what weneed to maintain and improve our beautifulsanctuary at Calvary and our other facilitiesand what would be the cost of thoseimprovements;

    2. Finalize a review of Calvarys finances from2008 to 2011;

    3. Work to improve our budgetary position inorder to continue Calvarys service to itscongregation and the community;

    4. Find a partner to work with us on CampFraser and utilize that asset for what it wasintendedserving our inner city youth andothers while at the same time reducing thefinancial burden it has placed on Calvarysfinances.

    Those are just a few of the challenges we face onthe Board to keep moving ahead. With your helpand support, 2012 will be a positive step forward.

    Moderators ColumnSoren Dayton,

    Calvary Moderator

    3

    As many of you know, Calvarys Moderator writes a quarterly column and Iwanted to use this opportunity to both introduce myself and tell you how Ienvision the next year at Calvary.

    Amanda and I have been members at Calvary since 2006. We joined when wewere dating, and Calvary became a community for us in a variety of ways,including as a grounding home in D.C. as Amanda was in law school in Chicago,while I continued to work in politics in D.C. Since then, I have served as Chair of the Board of Missions, member of the Church Council, member of the PersonnelCommittee, Chair of the Pastor Search Committee that called Pastor Leah, andordination committees.

    I grew up in and around churches. My (ordained Brethren in Christ and then Congregational) mother is apastoral counselor while my (Wesleyan) father and (ordained United Methodist) step-father are seminaryprofessors. And yes, I am named after Soren Kierkegaard the Danish theologian through whom my father found his way back to faith. Though my father taught at Northern Baptist Theological Seminary, I did not growup Baptist and Calvary was the first Baptist church I attended. Amanda grew up Methodist and has theambivalences about Baptists that come from being a Southerner, and I was baptized in a Congregationalchurch; our unique story is one of many that connects us to this different kind of Baptist church.

    It is interesting that I find myself as Moderator of Calvary at such an important moment in our congregationspast and future. First and foremost we have an opportunity to reflect on the truly remarkable history of our church and wonder about ourselves, Why are we committed to servingour community, be it our congregation, our city, our country, or our world? What is our role as a high-profile church in our nations capital?

    Our self-awareness in how we answer these questions will be critical aswe come to terms with and answer a series of questions that our churchhas faced over the years. The two most immediate ones are followingthrough on the discussion about leaving the Southern BaptistConvention and the ongoing discussion about how to fulfill the mission of Camp Fraser in a financially sustainable way.

    At the same time there are fiscal and church-governance issues that wemust address. Five years ago, we had a discussion about investing inthe future of our congregation by tapping our endowment at a higher level. This added investment has been used to grow and restructure our staff, grow our membership, and reorganize our programs. This will bethe fifth year of our plan, and it is time to look forward and begin planninghow our next phase of growth will look. During this process, we havediscovered a series of problems with the way our churchs by-laws are

    structured. These are all long-term questions about our identity.My role as moderator is to listen to our congregation and staff and toguide our discussions as we work through these and other issues this year. In that capacity, I will preside over many of our business meetings and participate in many conversations about our church. In the end, however,my goal is to work with you to make our faith community flourish. If you have questions or concerns aboutwhat is happening at Calvary, please reach out to me by phone at 202-552-1860 or by email [email protected].

    I look forward to working and worshiping with every one of you.

    My role asmoderator is to listento our congregation

    and staff and toguide our discussionsas we work through

    these and otherissues this year.

    Trustees of the Kendall Mission Fund Trust, havetransferred all assets of the fund, approximately$250,000, to Calvary Baptist Church, as a gift inobservance of the churchs 150th anniversary. Thistransfer was made with a donor restriction that theprincipal and income be used solely for extraordinary maintenance and major replacements for the Calvary sanctuary building (largely financed by

    Amos Kendall), not for operation and ordinarymaintenance costs.

    At a meeting of Calvarys Board of Trustees onNovember 13, 2011, almost exactly on theanniversary of Amos Kendalls death 142 yearsearlier, the Board of Trustees humbly and gratefullyvoted unanimously to accept thegift and to abide by the donors

    restrictions. To that end, at the Annual Church BusinessMeeting on January 22, 2012,Standing Resolution 66 formallyestablished the Kendall MissionFund as a donor restricted fundof Calvary Baptist Church.

    The Kenda l l Trus t wasestablished October 15, 1869,when Amos Kendall named fivetrustees and conveyed to thosetrustees and their successors$17,000 of Camden and Amby Railroad Couponbonds of 1868, bearing six percent interest. Theresponsibility to administer the trust has beendutifully carried out by a long line of Calvarymembers serving as trustees, including the lateCharles H. Burton, J. Richard Thomason, Dr. HenryWray, and Austin Hollway. Bill Harward and AlNielsen and the remaining trustees , have continuedthat tradition to manage the trust in honor of theintent of Amos Kendall.

    Church Receives $250,000 Kendall Mission Fund GiftPhil Renfrow, Member, Board of Trustees

    The purpose of the Trustwas to help establish newSunday schools in theDistrict of Columbia thatwould grow into newself-sustaining Baptistchurches. Severalchurches were startedin early years. Success,however, has been verylimited in recent years.The Trust Indentureprovided that the wholeregulation of the trust shall be under themanagement of the Trustees and the funds shall be

    disbursed and accounted for under such regulations as they mayestablish, and with the trustees or their successors being the sole

    judges of the manner and objectsfor which income from the trust maybe devoted. The Kendall Trustees,under this authority, determinedthat the Trust could be better used.In their sole judgment and inkeeping with the original intent of Kendall, they decided to offer allremaining assets to Calvary.

    The Kendall trustees feel this is an appropriate stepas Amos Kendall played a very important part in theearly history of Calvary. He was the primary donor tosupport building the sanctuary that continues asCalvarys House of Worship today. The Trusteeshave made other gifts to Calvary from the Trust,including, but not limited to, a substantial sum towardthe recent building renovation program, installation of the Kendall Plaque at the entrance to Kendall Hall,and funds to start the Calvary Burmese Churchwhich recently celebrated its 15th anniversary.

    The purpose of theTrust was to help es-tablish new Sunday

    Schools in the District of Columbia that would

    grow into new self-sustaining Baptist

    churches.

    Deacon DigestRachel Johnson, Chair of the Diaconate BoardLife in community is never stagnant and Calvary's deacons are privileged to have the opportunity to walkalongside members of our community as we grow and change. The diaconate seeks to be a pastoral pres-ence, reminding each of our members of the love of their broader church family.

    This past February, the new deacon board met for the first time and shared our hopes for Calvary in the year to come and the ways we will help our pastors minister to the congregation. So keep an eye out for the peo-ple with the snazzy name tags during worship, and we look forward to serving with you this year as we striveto live out God's call for the people of Calvary Baptist Church.

    It is amazing how far-reaching the effects of an hour or two of working together can be. In the case of WMS, rolling bandagesand hemming baby blankets for a mission station the other sideof the world can provide a much needed bit of comfort for a childwith a broken arm, and a new cover for a tiny baby of a poor family. It also keeps us informed about world conditions that arenot always provided by the news broadcasts.

    The mission work of women at Calvary, as well as through theDCBC Women's Department began in the 1800's.The WMSprovides help through the work of our hands, as well as financialaid as requested. Each year brings new information with requestsfor specific items. New members are always welcome andneeded. The usual meeting time is 10:30 a.m. on the firstTuesday of each month of the school year. In February, we held

    the meeting in Maryland so that Dee Robbins could attend. Always adjustable, those present took up the workwith renewed enthusiasm. We welcome anyone who wishes to join us and "Study Missions, Do Missions andPray for (and learn about) missions."

    The Calvary Stitch Along group is happy to shareour love of knitting with others! In addition toworking on our own personal crafts we have takenon a mission project of making hats, blankets and

    eye shields for newborns in El Salvador.In November 2011, Pastor Edgar Palaciosdelivered handmade blankets and eye shieldsused to protect newborns during light treatmentsto his son-in-law, Dr. Mario Castro, aneonatologist in San Salvador. Join us Sunday,March 11, April 15, May 6 and June 10you arealso welcome to knit or crochet at home and bringyour crafts to church. Hats should be made of acrylic baby weight yarn. At Calvary we endeavor to create community through education programs and worshipin order to become an agent of transformation. We aim to bring the Kingdom to thishistorical context by sharing Jesus Christ with those in pain and suffering and insituations that deny life and human dignity, labor rights, and women's rights.

    One of the ways we intend to bring the Kingdom of God in a local context is throughadvocating for driver licenses for all D.C. residents, low income housing opportunitiesfor poor families, and jobs for the unemployed. Nationally, we are called to promote aculture of peace, to achieve comprehensive immigration reform, and to work for anational budget that prioritizes economic justice for all. Internationally, our mission is tostrengthen and be strengthened by our mutually supportive relationship with Shalom

    Baptist Church in San Salvador. Shalom helps bring Jesus Christ to the poor of San Salvador, Shalom haslimited economic resources, but with the guidance of the Spirit they are rich in service and creativity. We areinspired by the progress Shalom has made in San Salvador and hope to emulate their vision of the Kingdomin our own community.

    On local, national, and international levels, Calvary Baptist Church is a missionary church. May the Spirit of God continue to encourage us to advance this sublime task.
