The 2019 Instructor Award was presented to Bruce Radons, C.E.T., who is a Mechanical Engineering Technology instructor at Red River College. The CTTAM Instructor Award is presented to a person who encourages their students to excel in technology and provides support to students enrolled in the different technology educa-tional programs.

Bruce has been an instructor for over 12 and a half years and strives to make student learning his highest priority. Through his development of project-based learning projects within his courses, Bruce guides students successfully through exploration of creative, critical-thinking and problem-solving processes and helps students to understand the ideas and information they need in order to develop their own understanding. CTTAM thanks Bruce for his dedication to teaching technology students.

The 2019 CTTAM President’s Volunteer Award was presented to Shannon Nordal. Shannon is an Associate of CTTAM currently working towards obtaining the two years of supervised practice required for certification. CTTAM would like to congratulate the Newly Certified Members and wishes them much success in their career.

A highlight of the evening was a presentation given by Joel Turner, a Red River College Electrical Engineering Technology student, about SpaRRCky, the Shell Eco-Marathon Electric Car. SpaRRCky was built by a team of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Technology students from Red River College with the help of support from many sponsors, including CTTAM. Joel, who is on the build team and also team captain, spoke about the trials and successes of SpaRRCky. Team SpaRRCky participated in the Shell Eco-Marathon from April 3 to 6, 2019 in Sonoma, California, and placed an impressive seventh overall in the battery electric category.

The team already has plans in place to continue improving SpaRRCky for future competitions, including imple-menting data acquisition, fine-tuning the mechanical efficiency, and more training for the drivers – including time spent playing racing video games, a suggestion that came from another team. Racing games can help drivers learn to hit the most efficient angles at turns and determine when to coast and when to accelerate.

Co-op: Hire What You NeedBy Kathy Davis, Instructor of Mechanical Engineering Technology at Red River College

he time is December 17, 1903. The place is Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Two sons of a minister, Wilbur and Orville Wright

are impatient to get home to Ohio for the holidays. In 1903 the job description, ‘engineering technologist’, did not exist. It is just as well – neither Wright brother thinks of himself as an engineer or an engineering technologist. They think of themselves as canny inventors, step-ping up from humble but clever bicycle mechanics to tackle the mysteries of con-trolled flight. If either brother had waved around a Professional Engineer’s license,

the first airplane might only have existed in exquisite detail and mind-numbing precision on paper, never to reach the skies above Kitty Hawk.

Engineering Technologist – Or Wizard? The Wright brothers were not profes-sional engineers (PEs). Had they been, they probably would have viewed the whole “This thing will fly!” project as impractical and in need of substantial safety margins such as anchors and tall ladders. Engineers have excellent math-ematical skills, work largely in theory, and design systems or conduct research. They may manage projects, evaluate and test

ideas or theories, or design something as tiny as a single switch. They are not as theo-retical, perhaps, as engineering scientists, but engineers work from theory to the very doorstep of practicality. It is the engineering technologist who today carries the idea across the threshold, into the realm of reality.

An engineering technologist uses some of the same skills as an engineer, though with a bit less rigor in mathematics and theoretical science. Where the engineer might work largely on theoretical work, an engineering technologist is, frankly, a bit of a wizard.

Want Reality?Hire an engineering technology co-op student! The benefits are huge:

• Attain tax credits.• Fill your short-term staffing needs.• Free up your employees for higher

priority work.• Provide you with productive

workers during peak hours.• Finish up special projects

or initiatives.• Provide you with insight into

course curricula.• Train your future workforce.• Reduce your recruitment and

training costs.• Provide your staff with

supervisory experience.

Some Advice?• Hire an engineering technology

student through co-op. 40% of mechanical engineering technology graduates (design & manufacturing) return to a co-op employer.

• Ask for a transcript with their application. If you need help in hydraulics, think twice about hiring a student with a D in Fluid Power.

• Post your ad in January. Make a timely offer; get a timely response.

• Didn’t post in January? There are many great students still available!

• Former supervisors mentioned that 5-10 technologists can keep an engineer busy. Hiring that ratio

backwards is expensive and inefficient.

• If you need a tradesperson, hire one – Technologists are not usually tradespeople.

• Please pass this article on to your HR folks.

University College of the North Student Receives CTTAM Scholarship

Derric Trudeau is enrolled in the Natural Resources Management Technology program (NRMT) at the University College of

the North in The Pas, Manitoba. He realized the importance of education and that by enrolling in the program, he would obtain knowledge that would benefit his aspiration of becoming a conservation officer.

The NRMT program is a two-year diploma program designed to train students for a wide range of employment opportunities in the field of natural resources management emphasizing on interrelationships among natural resources including forests, water, fish, and wildlife and is designed to provide the technical skills required by technicians in the use and management of natural resources.

Derric was chosen as the recipient of the scholarship for 2019 because of his dedication to his studies, his exemplary attendance as well as his dedication in the field.

Congratulations Derric.

The Technology Ring he technology ring is a outward visible symbol of certification in the profession. A sterling silver band formed by a

repeating pattern of five gears bracketed by a maple leaf on each side. The technology ring represents the union between the member, the Association, and fellow members.

• It may be worn according to the member’s preference but professional rings are traditionally worn on the last finger of the working hand (pinky finger).

• The maple leaves were chosen in order that the ring would be

acceptable to all Canadian Technicians and Technologists.

• The gears represent the five mem-bers of the engineering team: trades person, technicians, technologists, engineers, and scientists.

• The ring is distinctive enough so that the general public could identify at a glance a Certified Engineering or Applied Science Technician or Technologist from other professions.

The Technology Ring is available to all Certi-fied Technicians and Technologists at a cost of $100 and can be purchased from CTTAM. The office is located at 602 – 1661 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg. Please contact Anita at 204-784-1083 for more information.

Endowment Fund and scholarships will be awarded through Red River College. Red River College will be able to provide a tax receipt for larger sponsorship/donations.

There are different levels of sponsorship available this year. Please go to www.cttam.com for the registration form and sponsorship opportunities.
