Updates from our Family and Consumer Science Board Spring 2017 MARCH 2017 Dear WA-FACSE members, The WA-FACSE board has decided not to provide professional development workshops at Summer Conference in August 2017. The decision to discontinue a financial rebate provided to sections in previous years was made without input from the entire WA-ACTE board (including other sections). The rebate, which was issued based on those who attended summer conference under the FACSE section, did not cover all of our expenses for Summer Conference, however it did help offset costs and expenses incurred to put on quality and worthwhile sessions while at summer conference. We asked the WA-ACTE Board to reconsider this decision and they adamantly refused. Your WA-FACSE board discussed in length the options to best utilize our resources. The board voted that the time and work spent on the planning of summer conference speakers and sessions, on top of the expense to our association with no income, would be better spent working on and planning a successful FCS Annual Fall Conference. Please know that this decision is not one that was taken lightly or made easily. It was voted on by the board at our spring meeting in Leavenworth. This does not mean we will sever ties with WA-ACTE nor does it mean we will not have FACSE workshops at future summer conferences. We want to take time to decide how best to serve you and stay on budget. We are sending this early to allow you to plan accordingly. WA-ACTE Summer Conference is in Spokane, clock hours are provided, and professional development by other sections, OSPI and WA-ACTE will be provided. FACSE specific professional development will not occur until FCS Annual Fall Conference October 15th-17th, 2017 at the Red Lion in Spokane. More information to follow. If you have any questions or concerns about this decision, please direct them to Kathi Hendrix, WA-FACSE Executive Director at [email protected]

Updates from our Family and

Consumer Science Board

Spring 2017 M A R C H 2 0 1 7

Dear WA-FACSE members,

The WA-FACSE board has decided not to provide professional development workshops at Summer

Conference in August 2017. The decision to discontinue a financial rebate provided to sections in

previous years was made without input from the entire WA-ACTE board (including other sections).

The rebate, which was issued based on those who attended summer conference under the FACSE

section, did not cover all of our expenses for Summer Conference, however it did help offset costs

and expenses incurred to put on quality and worthwhile sessions while at summer conference. We

asked the WA-ACTE Board to reconsider this decision and they adamantly refused.

Your WA-FACSE board discussed in length the options to best utilize our resources. The board voted

that the time and work spent on the planning of summer conference speakers and sessions, on top of

the expense to our association with no income, would be better spent working on and planning a

successful FCS Annual Fall Conference.

Please know that this decision is not one that was taken lightly or made easily. It was voted on by the

board at our spring meeting in Leavenworth. This does not mean we will sever ties with WA-ACTE

nor does it mean we will not have

FACSE workshops at future

summer conferences. We want to

take time to decide how best to

serve you and stay on budget.

We are sending this early to allow

you to plan accordingly. WA-ACTE

Summer Conference is in Spokane,

clock hours are provided, and

professional development by other

sections, OSPI and WA-ACTE will

be provided. FACSE specific

professional development will not

occur until FCS Annual Fall

Conference October 15th-17th,

2017 at the Red Lion in Spokane.

More information to follow.

If you have any questions or concerns about this decision, please direct them to Kathi Hendrix,

WA-FACSE Executive Director at [email protected]

Tips for Contacting Your Legislator by Deborah Strayer & Tricia Littlefield

Letters, phone calls and emails are also good ways to contact your legislators — especially if made at the

right time, with a sincere and heartfelt message. The following are some tips on contacting your legislator

in person, in writing or by phone.

Contact your legislative office when an issue is being heard in committee, especially if your legislator

serves on the committee discussing the issue.

If the legislator is unavailable, ask if there is a staff person who handles your issue.

When you want a legislator to take a position on an issue, contact them before there is a vote.

Be brief and get to the point quickly. Be specific about why you are contacting them.

If asked, be prepared to give your name, address and the organization you represent (if any).

If you live in the representative’s district, tell them.

Be polite, professional, positive and respectful.

If you are concerned about a specific bill, give the bill number and subject. State your position on the

bill and a brief reason for that position.

Tell your legislator what you want them to do.

Thank them if they agree with you.

If they disagree with you or aren’t sure, tell them how a bill will affect your family, friends,

community, business or job. Include one or two specific examples.

Offer to be a resource for issues related to FACSE and CTE.

Thank them for their time.

I hope that the second part of your school year is going great. Just think, spring break is right around the corner. Do you have plans for Spring Break yet? I am hoping to tackle making my backyard wor-thy of having visitors over this summer, the joys of home ownership. The last weekend of February, the WA-FACSE board met for our Spring Meeting in Leavenworth. The weather cooperated with us and we had a sunny trip traveling over the passes and from across the state to get to Leavenworth. We got right to work discussing our agenda and completing tasks set out for our weekend. We didn't work the whole weekend. We did have a chance to check out downtown Leavenworth on Saturday night and it was beautiful lit up with Christmas lights. It did not disappoint. We ended our weekend feeling accomplished after tackling our to-do list. Be on the lookout for information on how to join the board, what positions are available and conference information. If you ever have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact Dawn Boyden ( [email protected]) or me ([email protected]).
