Dear Friends of Messmer,“Sometime in your life, you will meet someone from Messmer.”

A short time ago, one of our alumni shared this sentiment in reflecting on her experience as both a graduate and as a member of the larger community. I suspect many of you understand exactly why she said this. We frequently meet people in all sorts of places and from all walks of life who attended--or know someone who attended--Messmer. In this issue of Messmer Today, we invite you to meet Messmer again. Meet us at our three campuses, where

we faithfully serve nearly 1,700 students in grades K4-12. Take a look at what our students are up to on page 4 (A Day in the Life) and page 7 (Visiting the Windy City).

We invite you to meet us in the workplace, and in the boardroom. I invite you to meet Messmer’s Board of Directors, including our new officers: Kathy-Ann Edwards, Treasurer, Bill Otto ‘74, Vice Chair, and John Scheid, Chair. Join me in congratulating Director Mikel Holt on page 10! We encourage you to meet us online and in our various communities small and large, joining with your former classmates celebrating your time together at Messmer.

Learn about our shared history on page 8 (“90 Years – The First Three Decades), honor our deceased alumni on pages 13 and 14, and meet our new Alumni Engagement Coordinator, Lisamarie Arnold (wife of Dave ‘81 and sister-in-law of a number of Messmer graduates) on page 10.

We meet, no matter what and no matter where, in the living out of our own vocations, family and friends, and in the sacraments and traditions that ground Catholic education. It is a knowledge that strengthens our mission anew every day. Thank you for your continued prayers, support and enthusiasm for Messmer Catholic Schools.

Sincerely,

Jim PiattPresident

More than 1,000 people visited our elementary school campuses – St. Rose and Messmer Preparatory – during two

February open house events. This was no ordinary open house – aside from the usual informational sessions and building tours, our open houses featured a bouncy house, face painting, games, prizes and more. Don’t worry – if you missed the fun, join us in reliving it here!

In the Catholic Church, the traditional emphases of the Lenten season are prayer, fasting and almsgiving. However, there is one tenet of the

Catholic Church that knows no season – service. The students of Messmer Catholic Schools are taking the principle of service and ‘running with it.’ They are getting hooked on helping others – and it is changing their lives.

Mrs. Laura Hancock is the Director of Campus Ministry at Messmer High School. According to

Laura, service opportunities – particularly the off-campus opportunities – are in high demand. “I have to turn students away because too many sign up. There is always a wait list – Every. Single. Time.” One of the long-standing service opportunities offered to Messmer High School students is volunteering at St. Ben’s Community Meal.

Between six and nine Messmer High School students visit St. Ben’s twice a month. They refill beverages, distribute hand sanitizer, and help

people with disabilities or families with small children carry their trays and get their food. Messmer junior Catera Hubbert said, “I like to feel like I’m helping someone else – I would want someone to do that for my family if we needed it.”

The extra-curricular service group at Messmer High School is known as the Tablesetters. This group seeks to live the Gospel message of “Love Thy Neighbor.” The team meets weekly after school and each month they examine a different principle of Catholic Social Teaching. In January, the Tablesetters did a baby bottle collection where students and their families could fill up empty baby bottles with change and it was then donated to the Women’s Care Center.

In February, ten of our students volunteered at Habitat for Humanity. They worked on the construction of a home by doing painting, sanding, etc. For safety reasons, Habitat for Humanity only permits ten volunteers per shift. Within two days of passing out the permission slips, Mrs. Hancock had already received 14 permission slips, with at least five more promised for the next day. Hancock states, “The first time students volunteer, they are very nervous. And after that first time, they can’t get enough. Our students are transformed by the work they are doing.”

Within the last month, a new service group called the Messmer Missionaries has emerged at the Messmer Preparatory Catholic School campus. Led by Prep School teachers (who are also MHS alumni) Ms. Shamari Saleem (’08) and Mr. Walter Cullin (’05), this group meets twice a week and seeks to present service opportunities to our middle school students. So far, the Messmer Missionaries are coordinating a school wide clothing drive to donate to St. Ben’s and the Repairers of the Breach. They also plan to create a school newspaper to bring awareness on critical issues such as homelessness, as well as advertise upcoming events in the school year. Future plans include a towel drive and hygiene products drive.

Why are these acts of service so alluring for our Messmer students? The answer is simple – because service to others is changing their lives. Students that serve become more confident and outgoing. They aren’t afraid to talk in front of people. They want to help others. When asked what acts of service do for her faith, Catera Hubbert answered,

“Service shows how God will change you and put you in certain places at certain times with certain people.” Messmer junior Neyah Thompson said that service “helps her be a better person” and that she is “more grateful” for what she has. “I know that I am sharing love. And God loves that I’m doing that.”

SERVING THOSE LESS FORTUNATE

The Messmer mission and commitment to the city of Milwaukee began well before 1926 – inspiration perhaps initially struck when Sebastian Gebhard Messmer was appointed Archbishop of Milwaukee in 1903. In 1926, he established Diocesan High School – two years later, it would be renamed Messmer High School – on the corner of 1st Street and Burleigh Avenue in Milwaukee.

The school opened with 166 students and was run by one priest and six nuns from the School Sisters of Notre Dame. It immediately began to share its namesake’s vision and heart for Milwaukee’s immigrant communities. In 1908, Archbishop Messmer approved the first Milwaukee ministry

Our 90th anniversary celebration“officially” begins with the start of the 2016-17 school year. Planning is already underway — watch for details on our website and Facebook page!

to African-Americans when a local couple organized St. Benedict the Moor Church and School. In 1929, he oversaw the establishment of the Our Lady of Guadalupe Mission for Mexican Catholics. Almost immediately, the school began to grow, and construction of a new school building began during the 1929-30 school year on Capitol Drive in Milwaukee. By 1936, enrollment had increased to 1,015 students. The Messmer Bishops – a name established in 1940 – were making a difference in Catholic education in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee.

Throughout the 1940s and early 1950s, Messmer saw further expansion and faced an excellent problem: we were running out of room. Enrollment reached an all-time high in the 1940s. Two shifts of classes were established to accommodate more than 1,400 students. Eventually, it was decided that no freshmen classes could be admitted, as the upper classmen had nowhere to go in the crowded buildings.

The story continues this summer, in the next issue of Messmer Today!

On Tuesday, December 1, approximately fifty Messmer High School students ventured to Chicago for a field trip. Messmer teachers

Chad Hofmann, Diane Nuskiewicz, Lindsay McFarland and Kim Stein accompanied the students of the Introduction to Business class, primarily sophomores, juniors and seniors.

The students visited the Federal Reserve Bank. While at the bank, they visited the Money Museum where they viewed historical United States currency and learned to spot a counterfeit bill. They also saw a video about how the Federal Reserve operates and sets interest rates and monetary policies. Finally, the students were able to have their photos taken with $1 million!

After lunch, the students reconvened at the famous Willis Tower. The students went up to the Skydeck where they were able to visit the museum and watch a video on the history and architecture of Chicago. They tested their courage by exploring ‘the Ledge’ – a glass box that extends 4.3 feet out from the Skydeck on the 103rd floor. Our brave students looked straight down to 1,353 feet below – and then happily went back to their bus to return to Messmer!

In February, Messmer Catholic Schools announced exciting changes to our Board of Directors and our Emeritus Board.

Messmer welcomes three new board members: Lisa M. Pendergast, vice president-treasurer at MGIC; the Rev. Warren Sazama, SJ, president of Marquette University High School; and Kathy-Ann Edwards, partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP.

Messmer also announced that three of our board members have been appointed officers. John Scheid has been elected chair, William Otto ‘74 has been elected vice chair, and Kathy Ann Edwards has been elected treasurer.

Scheid serves on several public and private company boards of directors and brings to Messmer a wealth of business experience, including 36 years in senior leadership positions at PricewaterhouseCoopers. While there, he led the Global and U.S. Insurance practices through their most significant period of growth, and the merger of Price Waterhouse with Coopers & Lybrand.

Otto, a ’74 graduate of Messmer High School, is a longtime business executive in the hospitality industry, having served 18 years as president of Marcus Hotels and Resorts, and currently as executive vice president of Kalahari Resorts and Conventions.

Our Board serves the Messmer mission: to faithfully serve 1,700 students in grades K-12 at three campuses. Many thanks to these men and women who share our unwavering commitment to Catholic education and the city of Milwaukee.

Emeritus Board

Greetings, beloved Messmer Catholic Schools alumni!

I am thrilled to “meet” you as your new Alumni Engagement and Special Events Coordinator. I am excited to be the link between Messmer Catholic Schools and you, our alumni.

The Messmer Catholic Schools leadership team gratefully recognizes and embraces each of you as vital to its success in carrying forward the deep-rooted Messmer mission. Therefore we encourage all alumni to be engaged and invested. In creating my new position, the leadership team is taking that encouragement to the next level.

Let me tell you a little bit about myself. With over 20 years of experience in marketing communications and event planning, my intent is to serve you in supporting the advancement of Catholic education. As a high-school graduate of St. Mary’s Academy, and college graduate of both Mount Mary University and Marquette University, I am personally vested in Messmer’s strong commitment to sustaining the availability of a Catholic education for the children of Milwaukee. I am proud to be part of the Messmer family through marriage. Dave Arnold (Messmer ’81), and I were married in 1985. We have three children and belong to Holy Family Parish in Whitefish Bay.

I look forward to providing you with meaningful volunteer opportunities, enhancing your Messmer Catholic Schools connection and building a strong partnership with you and your fellow classmates. Please don’t hesitate to contact me with questions or to inquire about events or volunteer opportunities.

MESSMER ATHLETICS

12MESSMERTODAY

The Class of 2015 was inducted into the Messmer Athletic Hall of Fame on June 28, 2015, in a ceremony held at the Wisconsin

Club. Former Messmer athletes were nominated and selected based on their achievements on and off their respective playing fields. Friends, family members and past inductees gathered for cocktails, dinner and the induction ceremony, which particularly honored the accomplishments of Messmer athletes of the 1970s as well as the School Sisters of Notre Dame. Radio personality and Messmer alum Mike McGivern served as our evening emcee.

Since the Athletic Hall of Fame was founded in 1998, 110 men and women have been inducted. An induction ceremony is held every other year.

Two former Messmer Coaches (and graduates of Messmer!) have been recognized in state and national Halls of Fame for their contribution to high school athletics.

Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame Class of 2016

National High School Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame Class of 2016

Bob Neja (Messmer High School and West Bend East High School) Messmer Class of 1952

Throughout his 10-year career as a basketball coach at Messmer, Bob Neja won two state championships

(and placed second and fourth two other seasons). Additionally, his teams won a conference championship and appeared in the state tournament three times. As coach, Neja had the best Class A winning percentage in Messmer history (.699). As a Messmer High School student, he earned six major letters. Neja excelled as a 2nd Team All-Conference basketball player, a varsity baseball shortstop and a starting football quarterback. Neja continued to excel in college. As a St. Norbert College athlete, he was named MVP for All Sports his senior year, and was named college All-Midwest, All-Catholic. He has been elected to Halls of Fame for St. Norbert College, Wisconsin High School Tennis Coaches and Old-Time Ballplayers Association.

Ron Davies (Messmer High School and Kenosha Tremper High School) Messmer Class of 1960

Ron began teaching and coaching football in 1972 at Kenosha Tremper High School. In 1974 he became the head football

coach and from 1979 through his retirement (after the 1992 season) his record was 111 wins and 25 losses. His teams were undefeated WIAA Division I State Champions in 1979, 1980, and 1991. They were State runners-up in 1990 and 1992. In 1980 Ron was named the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association Coach of the Year. He was selected as WFCA District Coach of the Year six times and was selected as Milwaukee Sentinel Area Coach of the Year in 1980 and again in 1991. In 1998 he was inducted into the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

In 2002 Ron began teaching at his alma mater, Messmer. After a nine-year hiatus from coaching, he was appointed the head football coach at Shorewood/Messmer which had formed a co-op football team in 2001 that had gone winless. Messmer had not fielded a football team for almost 20 years. In Ron’s first year they were able to win three games and had winning seasons in 2004 and 2008, the year he retired from coaching. Three times Ron was awarded High Honorable Mention as CNI Suburban Football Coach of the Year which encompasses Milwaukee area suburban teams. In 2009 he was honored as Messmer Catholic Schools Alumnus of the Year.

Congratulations, Messmer Alumni Coaches!
