classes associated with these certificates offer a rigorous educational experience.

“ClASSICAl ARCHITECTURE”If the words ‘Classical Architecture’ conjure up visions of columns on every building, you are missing an opportu-nity to fall in love with the classics again. As an architect, contractor, remodeler, interior designer or decorator, you will learn to incorporate the classical elements that will enable you to produce high quality traditional design that suits the needs of today’s lifestyles. Through our new, online certificate program in Classical Architecture you will gain an academic grounding of classical architecture without the need to return to school full-time. We proudly offer this one-of-a-kind program in collaboration with The New England Chapter of the ICA & CA (Institute of Classical Architecture & Classical America).

Introduction to Classical Architecture, the first course in the certificate curriculum, will be followed by courses

in classical theory, intermediate and advanced design studios, interiors, landscape and new urbanism, and courses in manual drawing, sketching and traditional Beaux Arts watercolor rendering skills. While the courses are oriented to practicing architects and interior designers/decorators, they are also open to those with a general interest in classicism and timeless design. To learn more details about this exciting new program and online education, please visit our website the-bac.edu/ce.

“ENvIRoNMENTAl GRAPHIC DESIGN”Wayfinding and signage, building graphics, and media and interactive environment design don’t just happen. An environmental graphic designer is essential to the success and enhancement of your project’s final outcome. If you practice architecture, interior design, exhibition design, graphic design or industrial design you owe it to yourself, your client and your project to learn the principles of EGD.

Environmental Graphic Design is the practice of visual communication in the built environment. The Environmental Graphic Design Certificate Program offers professional education for designers wishing to pursue a career in environmental graphic design or looking to integrate EGD principles into other design disciplines. You will learn the foundations of environmental graphic design history, planning, and process; as well as the technical skills involved in documenting and implementing a complex range of project types including urban, institutional, transportation, and mixed use. The certificate recipient will understand how to integrate environmental graphic design with spatial design, utilizing collaborative approaches to the design process, visualization, documentation and implementation.

The BAC’s Environmental Graphic Design Certificate is approved by the Society for Environmental Graphic Design (SEGD).

ToDD RICHARDSoNTodd Richardson is a landscape architect practicing in Saco, Maine; he is a recipient of the Distinguished Radcliffe Seminars Instructor as a member of the lI faculty.

The ASLA 2010 Award of Excellence is the most recent recognition of Todd Richardson’s award winning firm. The ASLA jury summed up the “Lakeside Retreat” design approach as “…A very light touch… the design fits its context.” Trusting that site-sensitive design can reveal the abilities of a designer, his firm’s website lets the work speak directly to the viewer. Todd received his MLA from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and teaches upper level design studios.

DESIGN, HoRTICUlTURE, HISToRy & PRESERvATIoN

THE lANDSCAPE INSTITUTEThe Landscape Institute, established in 1970 as the Radcliffe Seminars Program in Landscape Design, continues its celebrated tradition of education excellence in landscape studies at the Boston Architectural College. Our unique, highly regarded program integrates design studies with history and horticulture to foster leadership in landscape stewardship, sustainability and preservation action.

Students who have taken advantage of its curriculum have made an indelible impact across New England as designers, historians, advocates and landscape preservationists.

Our broad educational approach allows students to:nourish a lifelong interest; ·explore a new interest; ·enable a career transition; ·enhance current practice; ·contribute to nonprofit organizations and their community. ·

oUR STUDENTSLandscape Institute students come from a wide array of professional backgrounds and avocational interests. Classes include students who are exploring new ground, as well as those focused on shifting careers. Many students begin simply by taking a course that catches their interest. For these students, the possibility of working in a landscape related field emerges after taking several courses, and receiving encouragement and support from our dedicated faculty and fellow students.

For those intent on changing careers, the certificate programs offer a less expensive and flexible alternative to enrolling in a professional degree program. Our students appreciate the opportunity to develop their knowledge, skills and design talent in an environment that allows them to flexibly choose courses that support professional interests or needs.

oUR PRoGRAMOur program helps students develop a design-oriented approach, integrating artistic, theoretical and practical skills. Small class size and seminar style learning promotes par-ticipation within a collegial learning environment. Interested students can enroll in a single course to explore an interest, build a sequence of courses to meet a specific need, or pursue a certificate in:

Landscape Design ·Landscape Design History ·Landscape Preservation ·Planting Design ·

The certificate programs appeal to the design novice as well as trained design professionals such as architects and planners. In many instances, coursework directly con-nects to specific job opportunities, supports a core set of values or interests that develop into a career, or advances professional expertise. The success of our graduates attests to the effectiveness of the education, and the value of the certificate as a tool of professional advancement.

“Design is not linear. The tools we use to

explore actually inspire new ideas.” BRUCE WIllIAMS, lI DESIGN CERTIfICATE CANDIDATE

oUR INSTRUCToRSProfessional designers and historians are key to developing our content-rich curriculum. Many of our instructors are dedicated to the LI due to the enjoyment they derive from having a student body of engaged, experienced adults, and the rigor of the program.

oUR CURRICUlUMThe Landscape Institute provides instruction reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of the field, as well as the professional skills needed to practice.

DESIGNThe Institute enjoys a strong reputation for teaching landscape design. Through a sequence of design studios, students build their skills and design ability, starting with the fundamentals and resulting in independently driven specialized projects. Students develop projects for specific sites, often originating in their own communities, that can lead into professional practice.

CoNSTRUCTIoN & SITE ENGINEERING Landscape design is expressed not only through plants, but through materials and manipulation of the land. These courses offer instruction in the principles of grading, of directing water, the types of materials used in creating built elements, as well as the graphic skills employed in expressing the construction details of a design.

DRAfTING & GRAPHIC CoMMUNICATIoNExpert instruction in drafting fundamentals and freehand drawing teaches students how to express themselves in two and three dimensions. Drawing is a very important tool that supports both the creative and problem-solving nature of design. An entry-level short course is offered for those learning drawing for the first time.

HoRTICUlTUREThe rich, wonderful world of horticulture can be explored through the lens of botany, native plant communities, sustainable site inventories, soil structure, plant groupings and design, and much more.

HISToRy & PRESERvATIoNA distinguishing characteristic of LI curriculum is its array of history and preservation courses. Content ranges from surveys of landscape design history to specific periods

lucia has succeeded in diverse areas during her

adult life: videographer, parent, landscape designer and director of a non-profit, CoGdesign.

Lucia Droby left her career as a TV videographer and producer to care for the four foster children she and her husband adopted. But not working proved more challenging to her than raising four children. A catalog for the Landscape Institute (then the Radcliffe Seminars Program in Landscape Design) was delivered by mistake to her mailbox. Intrigued, the Institute soon became her lifeline to a stimulating learning environment, and a creative way to look at the world.

She received her certificate in design eight years after taking her first course. The catalyst which triggered her sub-sequent career occurred when design instructor John Furlong asked her Design III class if anyone would be interested in providing pro bono design services to a community group. Two other students volunteered with her, and soon they were working with the city of Portsmouth, designing urban in-fill gardens.

The team started collecting community ‘jobs’ and farming them out to LI students. In 1997, Lucia formed a non-profit organization to continue providing pro bono design services to under-served communities.

Since then, COGdesign (The Community Outreach Group for Landscape Design)

has worked with over 80 community-based design projects in greater Boston. The LI continues to be a valuable resource for COGdesign, providing the majority of project designers and organization volunteers. With the BAC’s emphasis on practicum and connection with community, Lucia finds an even stronger conceptual relationship, an overlapping of missions.

THE oNlINE SDI ClASSRooM The online classes offered by the Sustainable Design Institute (SDI) are instructor-led, interactive, small and asynchronous. Each of these characteristics is vital to their success as an educational experience.

By being instructor-led, our students are able to engage in give-and-take with the building industry experts who develop and teach the courses. Instructors include architects, engineers, researchers, landscape architects, interior designers, planners, green building consultants and authors.

The interactive nature of the courses exposes students to each other’s ideas and experience as well as those of the instructor. Class sizes are limited to 15 persons, making manageable and meaningful discussions possible.

Because our students — and instructors — are based in all time zones, the courses need to be asynchronous. This feature also allows students with busy lives — and jobs — to “enter” the classrooms according to their own daily schedules. Because they are in all time zones, students bring their own cultures and environmental conditions to the classroom, which, along with their different professional backgrounds, makes for a richly varied learning experience.

THE CoURSESWith over thirty graduate-level, half-semester sustainable design courses to choose from, the SDI curriculum is the most comprehensive available. Courses address subjects from individual buildings to communities, from new building design to existing buildings, from detailed design to whole-building assessment, and from the current state-of-the-art to future possibilities.

The full curriculum and faculty bios can be found at the-bac.edu/green.

Many SDI courses are approved for continuing education credits by the American Institute of Architects, the US Green Building Council and the Royal Institute of British Architects. (Check the website to learn which courses have been approved to date.)

oNlINE CoURSES AND CERTIfICATIoN

THE SUSTAINABlE DESIGN INSTITUTETHE STUDENTSMost SDI students are either already a part of the building industry or they wish to be. Students range from planners and developers to all kinds of designers, contractors, facility managers, consultants and advocates. There are also always some students who take our courses simply to learn about environmentally responsible building. In addition, students from the BAC’s on-campus degree programs are enrolled in the online courses.

THE CERTIfICATESWhile some students take individual courses of interest, most choose to enroll in the SDI certificate program. Four graduate certificates are available in:

Sustainable Design ·Sustainable Building Design and Construction ·Sustainable Community Planning and Design ·Sustainable Residential Design ·

Each certificate has its own specific course require- ments drawn from the overall SDI curriculum. See the-bac.edu/green for further information.

fEATURED CoURSES

SUSTAINABlE DESIGN of HEAlTHCARE fACIlITIESGreening healthcare projects should be a no-brainer — what building type has occupants more deserving of a healthy space? Unfortunately, when people think of healthy spaces, hospitals are often among the last to come to mind. The intense resource requirements, code constraints, pro-grammatic requirements and institutional culture can make green building a more significant challenge than with other typologies. This course explores the theories and practices of sustainable healthcare design, what it means to create a healthy and healing environment, and how to balance the complex demands of hospitals with those of the natural envi-ronment. Topics will include energy and water use intensity, toxicities in building materials, daylighting and opportunities for connections to nature, greening a healthcare campus, use of rating systems, and more.

GloBAl PERSPECTIvES oN SUSTAINABlE DESIGNIt didn’t all start with LEED. Efforts to reconcile the demands of the built environment with the demands of the natural

world and finite resources have been going on around the world for a long time — in some places for millennia. For at least the last thirty years, significant green advances in building products, systems, planning and design have taken place in Europe, Asia, South America, and Australia-New Zealand as well as in North America. This course will examine the most innovative and exciting green design approaches, projects, policies and programs from around the world. While not all of these are transferable across cultural and geographic boundaries, this course is offered in the belief that, as we face the increasingly urgent need to build sustainably, we can all learn from each other.

SUSTAINABlE NEIGHBoRHooDSAs appreciation grows of the importance of sustainability at the “greater-than-a-single-building” scale, much attention is now being given to greening cities and regions. Also important to this effort are neighborhoods, those local communities where people live and work. Over the last few decades, organizations, planners and urban designers have considered how our heavily resource- consumptive development patterns can be changed to

create resource-efficient, humane and desirable communi-ties. This course will examine ways in which these changes can be brought about and evaluated for neighborhoods. LEED for Neighborhood Development will be studied as will other efforts to define sustainable communities. Case studies of successful and innovative community development around the world will be reviewed.

GREEN RESIDENTIAl REMoDElING & RENovATIoNWhile designing new green homes has been the focus of many organizations and practitioners over the last twenty years, most people live in existing homes built before our current interest in efficient resource use and healthy indoor environments. These homes need to be addressed. This course will examine the options available for retrofitting or completely renovating an existing house to make it more efficient in terms of energy, water and materials use and to improve or guarantee the quality of its indoor environ-ment. Approaches to the envelope which conserve what is deserving of retention while greatly increasing energy efficiency will be considered.

Sometimes when people see the name Sustainable Design Institute (SDI) at the Boston Architectural College, they think, “I’m not in Boston. I’m not an architect. These courses don’t apply to me.” Well…no not necessarily, and they might. While practicing architects do indeed take SDI courses/certificates, historically only 20% of SDI students have been architects. The rest come from all across the building industry — from developers and planners to facility managers — and beyond. Here are two:

Mike luongo completed college in the early 1970’s after which he made a career as a construction manager. In 2000, he

was put in charge of building the US EPA’s New England Regional Laboratory in Chelmsford, MA, which was to be

LEED Certified. Bringing that project — and LEED certification — to fruition was a process that Mike says “forced me to realize that the mundane business of con-structing buildings had a big role to play in conserving the planet for our kids.” In January 2010, Mike decided to pursue this realization by getting a certificate in sustainable design from the BAC. Mike soon “caught onto the format of the online interface and then became completely caught up in pursuit of the investigations (he) took up” as part of the course. Mike completed his Certificate in Sustainable Design and Construction in August 2010 and is looking forward to contributing “to changing the way construction works.”

A 2007 graduate of Middlebury College, Blair kershaw was determined to find for a career path about which she felt passionate. While living abroad, she recon-nected with two lifelong interests — design

and the environ-ment — which led her to sustainable design. In January 2010, Blair began the BAC’s online program and

completed the Certificate in Sustainable Building Design and Construction by August. Blair now reports that she found the program and learning environment to be intellectually stimulating and incredibly flexible. Since completing her first cer-tificate, Blair has begun working towards a Certificate in Sustainable Community Planning and Design, as she awaits the Fall 2011 start of the BAC’s new Masters of Design Studies in Sustainable Design; she is currently back in the States and seeking employment in the field.

So consider Sustainable Design at the BAC. Enhance your skills. Develop your passion. Help make a positive future.
