Jennifer Campbell: Aiming for IndependenceLast Thanksgiving Day, Denis Campbell of Westerlo noticed his wife, Jennifer, was not herself. With a history of back problems and living with lupus, it wasn’t unusual for Jennifer to feel under the weather. But, when she seemed to improve over the holi-day weekend, Denis assumed all was well.

But it wasn’t.

On the following Tuesday, Jen-nifer was having lunch with friends who noticed she was acting disoriented and confused. Her friends called Denis at work and said he needed to get Jennifer to the emergency department ... and right away.

After a CT scan and other tests came the diagnosis — a cerebral arteriovenous malformation (AVM) that had ruptured.

An AVM is an abnormal connec-tion between the arteries and veins that interferes with the blood circulation in that organ. AVMs can happen anywhere in the body and are usually congenital. When an AVM occurs in the brain, there are often no symptoms until they rupture, resulting in sudden bleeding in the brain and causing a stroke.

Once the doctors knew what had hap-pened, they transferred Jennifer to Albany Medical Center, where Junichi Yamamoto, MD, a neuro and endovascular surgeon recommended immediate surgery. But Denis wasn’t so sure. He wanted a second opinion. Luckily, a family friend, Wendy J. Zenzen Daly, MD, a radiologist with train-

ing in neurointerventional radiology, helped the Campbell’s get that second opinion quickly from colleagues in the Boston area who agreed that surgery would be difficult; however, it could result in complete removal of the malformation.

mas Day, before being transferred to Sunny-view Rehabilitation Hospital on December 29,” said Denis, manager of technical services/data communications for the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles.

Brian Jutton, PT, on the inpatient traumatic brain injury unit, remembers when his

patient first arrived at Sunnyview. “Jennifer was unable to walk and needed assistance getting dressed and getting in and out of bed,” he noted.

Meaghan Taliercio, MS, CC-SLP, speech/language pathologist, added that Jennifer had some minor issues with swallowing, as well as trouble expressing herself and communicating her needs to her caregivers.

But with a rigorous treatment plan under the direction of physiatrist Vincent Somaio, MD, Jennifer began to improve.

On December 11, Jennifer entered the operating room at Albany Medical Center where Dr. Yamamoto and his team spent the next 16 hours repairing her brain. But, she wasn’t out of the woods yet. In the hours after the surgery she suffered a stroke which caused the complete loss of her right side. Days after the surgery, the 46-year-old had another small bleed at the site of the AVM and she also experienced a seizure.

“We spent the next several weeks at Albany Med, including Christmas Eve and Christ-

WelcomeGreetings! It is always gratifying to share good news with you!

I am happy to announce that Sunnyview recently was awarded three-year accreditation by the Commission on the Accreditation of Rehabilita-tion Facilities (CARF) for six of its programs. This marks the tenth consecutive year that Sunnyview has been awarded three-year accredi-tation from CARF, and represents the highest level of accreditation that can be awarded.

It is important to note that CARF accreditation is strictly voluntary. An organization receiving a three-year accreditation has undergone a rigorous peer review process by a team of surveyors who are professionals working in the field of medical rehabilitation. Sunnyview, during its on-site CARF visit, demonstrated its commitment to pro-grams and services that are of the highest quality, are measurable and accountable.

In its report, CARF highlighted many areas of strength and exemplary performance, including our hospital’s:• health and saftey practices• expert rehabilitation physicians• high quality interdisciplinary team• dedicated staff with long-standing service• well-maintained environment of care• array of programs and services• commitment to staff education/development

In addition, CARF noted Sunnyview’s commitment to such specialty programs as the young adult stroke survivors, low vision, driver rehabilitation, adaptive sports and recreation, and waiver services for the brain injured population, as well as leadership’s vision and dedication to the needs of our patients.

Achieving this highest level of CARF accreditation makes a strong statement about Sunnyview’s expertise and commitment to providing the highest quality and safest care. As the only area hospital specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation, we are proud of our experienced team of professionals who utilize the most ad-vanced technology and techniques available to help our patients achieve the fullest possible recovery.

Thank you to our physicians, staff and donors for this outstanding achievement — it is undoubtedly the result of the individual and collective efforts of each and every member of our rehabilitation team. Congratulations!

Sunnyview Profile: George T. Shelton, MD

Inspired by a family friend and physician, at age 13, a young George Shelton had already made up his mind that he wanted to become a doctor.

And, it’s no wonder. Medicine runs in his family. His story is of a real-life “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman.” His own great-grand-mother, Elizabeth Shelton, pioneered the way for women having served as the second-ever female physician in the state of Colorado. This was back in the late 1800s when Colorado was still consid-ered the Wild West!

The present-day Dr. Shelton, a Cali-fornia native, first came to the Capital Region in the early 1970s to attend Albany Medical College. After complet-ing his residency at Keesler Air Force Base in Mississippi, he served as General Medical Officer at Ramstein Air Base in Germany. Once he was honorably discharged from the Air Force, Dr. Shelton returned to the Capital Region where he practiced industrial and emergency medicine for nine years.

But, in 1984, Dr. Shelton sustained traumatic injuries in a pedestrian auto accident. His personal rehabilitation experience served as a turning point in his life compelling him to change his profes-sional focus to physiatry, the practice of physical medicine and rehabilitation.

After completing his residency at Albany Medical Center in 1989, he joined the staff at Sunnyview and has been there ever since. Currently, he serves as an attending physiatrist and co-director of Sunnyview’s Regional Amputee Clinic which provides a broad spectrum of care for both upper and lower-extremity amputees, including post-operative care, care for traumatic injury and

outpatient care. Services include physical and occupational therapy, education for patients and families, prosthesis training and an amputee support group.

In addition to his work with amputees, Dr. Shelton also has a special interest in the area of stroke rehabilitation, specifically in the

unique rehabilitation needs of young adult stroke patients. “Many of our young adult stroke patients need to get back to caring for children, jobs, school or other pressing obligations. They are under a lot of pressure to return to their everyday lives as quickly as possible,” he explains. Sunnyview’s young adult stroke program is tailored to helping adult stroke patients 59 years of age and younger get back to their lives.

“There are many factors that set Sunnyview’s Stroke Center of Excellence apart from

other programs. Our clinical outcomes are excellent, we continually exceed national benchmarks for patients returning to the community and our patient satisfaction scores are constantly high,” says Dr. Shelton.

Sunnyview’s Stroke Center of Excellence is a CARF-accredited Stroke Specialty Program.

Approximately 400 stroke patients of all ages benefit from Sunnyview’s stroke rehabilitation program each year. In addition, Sunnyview offers state- of-the-art technologies, such as the Bioness system for upper and lower extremities (made possible from the Wright Family Foundation), a pressure mapping system and a therapeutic pool (from the Golub Foundation.)

Dr. Shelton attests that the key fac-tor that makes such a difference for all patients at Sunnyview is its experienced interdisciplinary team of rehabilitation experts — a comprehensive rehabilita-tion team that includes board-certified physiatrists, physical and occupational therapists, speech/language pathologists, rehabilitation nurses, audiologists, neuro-psychologists, social workers, recreation therapists, vocational counselors, driving educators and special educators.

“Sunnyview has the state-of-the-art technol-ogy, but it’s the people who use that technol-ogy who make all the difference. I am truly blessed to work with a team of dedicated professionals with such experience and skill,” remarks Dr. Shelton.

Dr. Shelton resides in Niskayuna with his wife Susann. He enjoys traveling and dab-bling in photography.

Why a Wish List?Sunnyview Rehabilitation Hospital main-tains a capital budget to purchase much- needed equipment. Every item from the wish list that the Sunnyview Hospital Foundation is able to fill is one less strain on our not-for-profit budget.

Top priority items needed:Orthopedics $25,000 per room (13 rooms)To enable the hospital to make much- needed renovations to the orthopedic pa-tient rooms. Each room will cost $25,000 to update and there are room-naming opportunities available.

Wellness Center $4,495To purchase a Cybex 530T Cardio Addition Treadmill Pro Plus Platinum used for both in and outpatients in rehabilitation therapy as well as community usage.

Cardiopulmonary $1,500 (two needed)To allow Sunnyview to purchase two lounge sleeper chairs for family members who wish to stay overnight with a loved one.

Speech and Audiology $16,000Will enable us to purchase VitalStim neu-romuscular electrical stimulation which is useful with patients with dysphasia (difficul-ty when swallowing and inability to eat or drink). Dysphasia impacts people of all age groups and is present as a result of a number of medical conditions, such as stroke, mul-tiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease and ALS.

Physical Therapy $10,000Many patients at Sunnyview benefit from the use of wheelchairs. We are in need of a portable wheelchair washer for infection control purposes.

Occupational Therapy $975To purchase a neuromuscular electrical stimulation unit for patients with brain in-jury or stroke. The unit is used to re-educate movement in a patient’s arms or legs.

Hospital-wide $4,000 (many needed)Sunnyview has used low-position beds suc-cessfully to minimize the potential for injury with patients at risk of falling. Increasing the number of beds will allow Sunnyview to meet peak demand when there is a large number of at-risk inpatients.

The Neuro-Rehab Institute – Neurological $13,000The use of a portable ultrasound bladder scanner is becoming more common in the rehabilitation setting as a noninvasive method of estimating bladder volume. Benefits include a decreased number of

invasive catheterizations, thus decreasing the potential for urinary tract infections and urethral trauma, and increasing patient satis-faction and comfort. The scanner would be used by approximately 520 patients per year and could be used up to four times a day per patient.

The Neuro Rehab Institute – Traumatic Brain Injury $2,100To allow Sunnyview to purchase three EZ Care easy release seat belts and alarms. Many times brain injury patients are at risk for falls. This seat belt for a wheelchair will sound an alarm when the patient attempts to stand up.

Dear Mr. Eisenman,

On November 9, 2008, my husband fell 20 feet out of a tree stand in

Corinth ... he was partially paralyzed from the waist down. He was taken

by helicopter to Albany Medical Center where he was operated on ...

and stayed in intensive care for 10 days. He was transferred to Sunnyview

Hospital on November 19.

Gradually, as the days and weeks wore on, our ability to understand the

enormity of the change in our lives was nurtured by your caring staff. When

something like this occurs, there is no right or wrong way to accept it. We

were bewildered as to how to help each other through this. That’s when your

professionals stepped in with care and concern beyond anything we had

experienced before in a hospital situation.

The most wonderful aspect of your hospital is the total focus on rehabilita-

tion. That focus was reflected, most of all, by your PT and OT staff during

every minute they spent with Jerry. His progress over only three months in

Sunnyview took him from the Hoyer lift to being able to walk with forearm

crutches. He continues to get better through the incredible services of your

outpatient staff.

Schenectady is lucky to have Sunnyview. It is obvious that this hospital

exemplifies the heart of recovery ... a dedicated staff.

Sunnyview Plans Upgrades to Orthopedic Unit

Credit Union DonationThanks to the generosity of members from three regional credit unions, Sunnyview Rehabilitation Hospital recently received $1,949 to be used to upgrade and purchase the new edition of the Wide Range Assess-ment of Memory and Learning, the primary clinical measure in Sunnyview’s Sports Concussion Management Program. The contribution will also support the purchase of computer scoring for the California Ver-bal Learning Test - Children’s Edition which is used in the assessment of children with brain tumors.

Credit Unions Care for Kids is a statewide community involvement program of the New York State Credit Union League (NYSCUL) with the goal being to raise money for children’s hospitals and pedi-atric units throughout New York State. Participating credit unions include: Hudson River Community Credit Union, Saratoga Community Federal Credit Union, and the TCT Federal Credit Union.

Patients to Benefit From New Van

Originally built in 1967, the orthopedic unit at Sunnyview has seen a dramatic increase in patients suffering from multiple trauma, fractures and total joint replace-ments. In fact, with the transfer of rehab beds from Eddy Cohoes Rehabilitation Center in September 2008, the numbers have been growing steadily: from 839 inpatients in 2008 to 1,089 in 2009.

With only light cosmetic changes made in 1994, the orthopedic unit is in need of a major upgrade to its patient rooms. And, we need your help!

The project includes: new floors, updated bathrooms, a reconfigured air distribution system, new lighting, increased electrical outlets and new doors, as well as new wall coverings, window treatments, wardrobes and shelving.

“Our patients want and deserve a comfort-able and attractive environment in which to heal,” noted Rosann DeMeo, vice president of patient care. “We have collected sugges-tions and feedback from patients and fami-lies and are incorporating those ideas into the design of our upgraded patient rooms.”

Plans call for construction to begin in June with completion in early 2011.

According to Kathleen Ziobrowski, ex-ecutive director of the Sunnyview Reha-bilitation Hospital Foundation, each room will cost $25,000 with total project costs estimated at $325,000.

“We look to our community to help sup-port this project. There are many naming opportunities available, however gifts of any size are appreciated,” added Kathleen.

For more information on the project, or to donate, please contact the foundation at (518) 382-4586 or go to www.sunnyview-foundation.org.

Sunnyview Introduces Practice Innovation Group

Brown-bag Luncheon

Lecture Series Sunnyview’s Luncheon Lecture Series, held the fourth Wednesday of each month, provides an informal opportu-nity to share current rehabilitation care research, new and innovative technol-ogy and techniques, and clinical best practices. The lectures, open to all Sunnyview staff and other interested individuals, are held noon - 1 pm in the Conference Center.

For more information, contact Robert Gillen, PhD, at (518) 382-4522, or email him at [email protected].

Long recognized for its innovative clinical practice and reputation for staying abreast of the most up-to-date research, Sunnyview is pleased to announce the creation of a new research/practice innovation group. Under the direction of Robert W. Gillen, Ph.D, manager of the department of psychology, the group is charged with identifying and appraising new approaches that have the potential to enhance clinical practice here at Sunnyview.

Comprised of staff members who have demonstrated a keen interest in the latest in clinical practice and research developments, the group includes representation from vari-ous disciplines throughout the hospital.

The group, which meets on a bimonthly basis, reviews and reports on current

rehabilitation research; serves as a forum for presentation, discussion and decision making regarding acquisition/introduction of new technology and practice innovations; provides a venue for appraisal of research initiatives developed both by Sunnyview staff and external sources; strives to develop and/or strengthen working relationships with academic research institutions in the Capital District; reviews existing data regard-ing best clinical practices and evidence-based medicine, as well as remains abreast of new developments in these areas.

“Our goal at Sunnyview is to assure that every patient receives the highest quality clinical services, based on the most recent, empirically based evidence,” noted Dr. Gillen.

occupational therapist, Jake Ashby, OTR, chalk up Jennifer’s success to hard work.“Jennifer did a great job! She was a ‘fast mover’ ... she listened to every-thing we had to say and responded ex-ceptionally well to traditional therapy,” said Brian. “And, Denis helped enor-mously ... he was very supportive and that makes a big difference in a patient’s recovery,” added Jake.

Denis and Jennifer both agree that “the staff at Sunnyview was absolutely fantastic ... the therapists are simply ‘the best’, they explained everything so we really understood what was happening,” said Denis.

“I did a lot of research while Jennifer was still at Albany Med, and I came to realize that there are very few places in the entire country that offer what Sunnyview offers ... we are so fortunate to have a rehabilitation hospital like Sunnyview right here in the Capital Region,” he added.

On January 22, Jennifer was discharged from the inpatient unit and spent the month of February in outpatient therapy.

What’s next for the Campbells?

Denis looks forward to spring and get-ting back to trapshooting, something he and Jennifer enjoy together. They also enjoy long rides on Denis’ motorcycle.

But what Jennifer is especially looking forward to is driving.

“Where we live, it’s pretty rural. I need to be able to drive my car again. Not only will it help me be more independent ... it will make me feel normal, again.”

Patient Needs Scholarship FundSince 1999, the Patient Needs Scholarship Fund at Sunnyview has helped ease the fi-nancial burden on patients in need of medi-cal rehabilitation services who may not have the necessary financial resources or insur-ance coverage. The program, administered through Sunnyview’s social work depart-ment, uses an objective screening process to determine a patient’s eligibility. Patients from throughout the hospital are considered and are chosen based on financial need.

During 2009, the Patient Needs Scholarship Fund provided more than $82,000 in schol-arships to 130 patients, thanks in large part to the generosity of Sunnyview’s employees. According to Kathleen Ziobrowski, execu-tive director of the Sunnyview Rehabilitation Hospital Foundation, “The 2009 Employee Fund Drive raised nearly $39,000, most of which went to support the Patient Needs Scholarship Fund. In addition, the Sunny-view Auxiliary contributes an additional $30,000 each year from gift shop proceeds.”

Noelle Evertsen of Pleasantdale knows first-hand how helpful the fund can be. The 34-year-old widow, an inpatient at

Sunnyview during May and June of last year, was being treated for transverse my-elitis, a condition caused by a spinal cord injury that left her with numbness in her lower extremities. After a month as an inpa-tient, Noelle was ready to be discharged and start outpatient therapy. Yet, although the young mother had insurance, she couldn’t afford the co-payments on her Social Secu-rity income.

“That’s when we have a tremendous op-portunity to make a difference in someone’s life,” explained Laura Cornell, social worker at Sunnyview. “Noelle was able to receive outpatient physical therapy throughout the summer months and into September. While her insurance paid a portion, the Patient Needs Scholarship Fund paid her co-pays,” said Laura.

If you would like more information on the Patient Needs Scholarship Fund, or would like to make a donation, please contact the foundation office at (518) 382-4586, or e-mail us at [email protected].

2010 Roberts Scholars AnnouncedTwo Sunnyview staff members were recently named recipients of the Richard E. Roberts Scholar Award for 2010: Patricia Valenza, PT, ATP, assistant direc-tor of physical therapy, and Ann McCar-roll, PT. The scholarship will allow Patri-cia and Ann to attend a four-day course entitled “Locomotor Training Principles and Practice: An Activity-Based Therapy Program.”

Locomotor training provides task-spe-cific practice of standing and walking by optimizing the sensory cues to generate improved motor activity for mobility, standing and walking after neurologic injury. Locomotor retraining is provided

on a treadmill using partial body weight support and manual facilitation. Improved neuromuscular capacity is then transferred to over ground skills that are integrated into the home and community.

As participants in the course, Patricia and Ann will learn the scientific basis, hands-on skills, clinical decision-making, and administrative and management strate-gies to bring this innovative new therapy to Sunnyview’s Neuro-Rehab Institute.

For more information on the Roberts Scholar Award, or to make a gift for

future training of staff, please call the foundation office at (518) 382-4586.
