Sukkot in a Nutshell

Vayikra 22:26 – 23:44, pages 723 -730From "Torah Sparks"Sukkot is one of our three pilgrimage holidays – called in Hebrew the ShaloshRegalim. Although today, Pesach is the most widely observed, Sukkot is actually considered the most significant of the three holidays. On Sukkot, we chant a full Hallel every day, and the rabbis referred to it as He-Chag – THE holiday. Sukkot is a time of joy. We are commanded, in fact, to rejoice – v’samachta b’chagecha v’hayita ach sameach. We’re also commanded to dwell in a Sukkah – this means having any fixed meals inside of a Sukkah, along with making Kiddush in a sukkah, studying Torah in a sukkah, and even sleeping in a Sukkah. We’re also commanded to take the Arba Minim – Lulav (palm), Etrog (citron), Hadas (myrtle) and Arava (willow), and shake them together. This is a mystical act, and a way of connecting ourselves deeply to God and the world. Today in synagogue, we read God’s instructions to Moses regarding Shabbat and the festivals – Pesach, Shavuot, Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and Sukkot. The maftir reading describes the offerings that were to be brought to the Temple on Sukkot.
