Dr. Philip Tsui is an internationallyacclaimed Clinical Training Specialistwith a focus on services for LGBTseniors and bringing culturalcompetency to care. Dr. Tsui bringsover 30 years of experience inbehavioral health to Felton, havingprovided training throughout the UnitedStates, as well as in Hong Kong, Macau,Singapore, Taipei and Tokyo. His workin San Francisco includes eight yearswith Asian Pacific Islander WellnessCenter serving the LGBT community aswell as serving as Program Director atRichmond Area Multi Services, (RAMS)and as a member of the Board ofDirectors of San Francisco AIDSFoundation.

Now 65, despite his manyachievements, Dr. Tsui still rememberswhat it felt like growing up in extremepoverty in Hong Kong. The memoriesof hungry days and nights give himspecial empathy for Felton's clients ofall ages with multiple needs.

Philip came to the United States as ateenager, living in Michigan, Minnesota,and New Jersey, before finding hishome in San Francisco. "For a younggay man, San Francisco was the Meccathat beckoned."

When it came to choosing a career, hemade a brief stop at law school beforediscovering that, although he liked thelaw, social work seemed like thevocation through which he could makesome contribution to society. "I ran intofriends who were social workers andpsychologists. I wanted to domeaningful work and make a decentpaycheck." He had no idea howimpactful his work would become.

"I think that having the opportunity tobe one of the foot soldiers incombating the HIV epidemic is one ofthe more meaningful things in my life. Iwas able to work with a lot ofstruggling immigrant clients; this reallymade me feel like I made a difference-not to mention also being able toimpact the careers of younger socialservice mental health professionals."

Felton's Foster Grandparent Program wasone of 20 original national pilotprojects. Limited-income, mobileseniors, ages 55 and older, receivesmall stipends for providing supportservices for 20 hours a week tochildren with special needs. Seniorsserve in classrooms, pre-schools, andchildren's units in hospitals. Theydevelop one-to-one consistentrelationships with the children, bytutoring, mentoring, and providingemotional support.

Dr. Tsui's expertise with the impact ofdementia on LGBT seniors has both aprofessional and personal dimension."My mother has middle stageAlzheimer's disease. My brother isthere with her in Hong Kong, and I visither as often I can." He deeplycomprehends the complexity of theneeds of seniors and their families. Andhe treasures the memories of hismother's advice.

"Ever since I was a boy, she would tellus -we might not be rich, but we wearclean clothes. She would remind us tostudy hard. And if she could speakclearly to me right now, I believe shewould say - you make a decent living,you're a good man, and you take careof your mother - I think she would beproud of me."

The Senior Companion Program, alsofounded in the late 1960's, is a programthrough which limited-income, mobileseniors provide companionship services15-30 hours per week to frail, isolated,and homebound seniors, ages 55 andolder. Participants serve in adult dayhealth centers and senior centers,engaging at-risk seniors in on-siteactivities. Senior companions aresupervised by case managers.

Felton President and CEO Al Gilbert,praised the volunteers, saying,

Mike isVice-President of Janet MoyerLandscaping, and he and his wife Janethave provided some happy endings forsmash and grab victims who feared theymight never again see their valuablesthat were stolen.

Three times a week Mike and Janet hikeup to Twin Peaks picking up trash.Theyoften find purses, backpacks andwallets discarded by thieves. Then theytrack down the crime victims and returnpassports, drivers' licenses, and othertreasures.

When they mailed a purse to a womanin Nevada, she called with a tearfulthank you, sharing that her car had notbeen burglarized, but that she had beenrobbed.

There are many sobering stories. Overthe last five years of Mike and Janet'sinvaluable community service, robberieshave increased in San Francisco, and sohas their determination to return asmany items as possible.

Recently, Tiana Vela's car window wassmashed and her purse was stolenwhile showing a visiting relative thebeauty of Twin Peaks. When Mike andJanet hand delivered her favorite purseto her, she cried tears of relief. It ismoments like that which continue tomotivate Mike's Twin Peaks treks.

Grandparents have served them well:lessons of patience, how to talk toseniors, and the enjoyment of sharedstories.

"I felt so much comfort that not onlywere the teachers in the classroom, butalso, the foster grandparents werethere."

Amy Solliday, Felton Board HumanResources Committee Chair and Vice-President of Old Navy Store Operations,was a genial host, warmly acknowledgingFelton staff and board members andcommending the extraordinaryindividuals who serve in the FosterGrandparent and Senior Companionprograms. One such participant is SilkGaudin, a vibrant and joyful 71 year oldgrandmother and great-grandmotherwho swims and practices yoga andQigong.

Senior Community Service EmploymentProgram (SCSEP) provides workforcetraining for older adults, age 55 andolder, in community serviceorganizations and governmentdepartments, leading to permanent jobplacement, including jobs in the privatesector.

Ted Jang had an extensive backgroundas an administrative assistant andphotographer at Hastings Law School.After the 2008 economic downturn, hefound himself unemployed andexperienced a sense of hopelessness.

Fortunately, a series of events led Mr.Jang to SCSEP. He now benefits from theprogram and, as an EmploymentFacilitator Trainee, helps other seniorsfind employment.

Speaking about his personal experiencewith SCSEP, Ted says:

"I finally felt there was a light at the endof the tunnel brimming brighter -like thesun filtering through darkened clouds;instead of a feeling of hopelessness,there was such a thing as hope."

Ted is grateful that SCSEP providesolder adults with purpose and a senseof worth.

"I want to thank SCSEP for saving my lifeand giving me the opportunity to startanew with dignity. SCSEP offers thechance to live again."
