Hello, Giinagay, Hai,
Last Tuesday afternoon we had the new Kindy families for
2018 come along and have an afternoon information session
regarding school readiness. Thank you to Bu Bettina and Mrs B
for being part of this knowledge sharing opportunity, so families
can make informed choices regarding the best starting time for
their children. The highlight was the parents through a virtual
platform called Zoom, having access to Shona Bass a Director
of Early Foundations and a renowned consultant who has
worked in the education field for over thirty years, relating to
school readiness. This is taken from her website.
Is Your Child Ready for School? Ready or Not?
Readiness for school is in itself an important factor for
consideration before starting school, despite the responsive
and adaptable programs that schools provide for children and
the emphasis upon individualising learning for each child.
Readiness is not about schools just adapting and attempting to
meet the needs of children. International research emphasises
that certain areas of development and maturity are essential
for children so that once at school, they are able to maximise
the opportunities provided.
Social and emotional areas are the key areas of development
that are most important for a child in regard to school
readiness. This is in contrast to what many people believe -
reading, writing and knowing colours or numbers are NOT
readiness indicators. Some schools may suggest this is
necessary, however this is only a reflection of a particular
schools position and not reflective of a child's readiness for
school.

Environmental Education
War on Waste in Scotts Head PS By Jalaara, Grace and Dimity
To help our wild life we are doing our best to make a change
to the amount of plastic that we use in everyday life.
For the last week we have been monitoring our rubbish
collection. It is usual to produce one small wheelie bin full of
rubbish.
We have a challenge for you!
If we can see a big reduction in the amount of rubbish that we
produce (particularly plastic) we can be rewarded with a
whole school beach picnic!
The challenge begins NOW!

This Friday will be our school Athletics Carnival which
is held at Buz Brazel Oval, Vernon Street Scotts Head.
All students are asked to go directly to the oval, not to
school. The school bus will pick up and drop off
students to the oval as well. There will be no staff at
school. Any parents who would like to help on the day
would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, yaarri yaraang, terima kasih.

We see the difference but a turtle would
not. Do you want to help make a change?

Senior Excursion to Canberra
Term 3 Week 3—Monday 31st July to Friday 4th August
Notes with additional information including an itinerary and list of things to bring have
been sent home today. A reminder that medical consent forms are now due to be in.
Also, the next instalment of $110.00 was due last Friday (19/5). Please ensure you
keep up to date with the payment plan.
Cooler Weather
We would like to remind parents that children who are unwell need to stay at home.
They need to rest and get better, not come to school where they will feel terrible and
pass on their germs to everyone else. We appreciate your understanding. Also, just a
reminder that children who are unwell for 3 consecutive days or more, a medical
certificate must be obtained from your doctor.
Parents, please make sure your child’s name is written on their school jumper. If they
leave it somewhere, we will be able to give it back! At the moment we have several
jumpers in the sick bay area at the office.

Weekly Round Up
Tennis This term Scotts Head PS have been involved in a fantastic Tennis Program on
Fridays. Students have been learning a variety of skills including balancing,
throwing, bouncing, teamwork and racquet handling. Our tennis instructor Kylie
has made many comments about the excellent tennis skills Scotts Head Public
School students have. Tennis is a fantastic sport for all ages, supporting hand-eye
coordination, balance and working in collaboration with a partner.
The Year 3/4 students will be participating in a valley tennis competition with other
local schools on Friday 16th June, more information to come.
Athletics Training
Over the last few weeks, all students have
been practicing athletics events in
preparation for our school athletics carnival
this Friday.
Events including high jump, long jump,
discus, shot put, running and relay races. We
are really looking forward to seeing families
coming to support their children. If there are
any parents or family members who are
willing to help on the day, any support would
be greatly appreciated with time keeping,
crowd control, measuring distances, baking
for the canteen.
We look forward to having a great day!
At lunchtime, Duke teaches us the basics of basketball. We
play a game called 21, Pig and Round the World.
I’ll explain how these games work. 21 is where you shoot
from the 2 point line and the first one to get to 21 is the
winner. Pig is where you shoot from one place, if you get it in
the next person is on a letter “P”. If you get it in 3 times, the
person is out.
Round the world is a game you start from one spot and go to
the other on the circle. First one to get to the other side, wins.
We all like it! By Brodie Harvey
