Sheila Arnold and Dom Tourneur already had 11 Alice Springs Cups between them before Monday — a figure they improved upon when The Ruffian turned the Red Centre’s richest race into a one-act affair. The Ruffian, who had won the Darwin Guineas-NT Derby double as a three-year- old, put his very best foot forward in one of the most dominant big race victories you will ever seen. Sure, there have been horses win the race by greater margins, but you knew a hell of a long way from home that the Mauritian Magician had a sixth Cup in eight years in his keeping. Tourneur rides Pioneer Park like the track is in his own backyard, not a venue he visits once a year. The Ruffian joins his previous Cup triumphs on Granzig (2012), Naratel (2011), Tradesman’s Choice (2008), Catechism (2007) and Zylvester (2006). It is a record that will take some beating, especially if Tourneur returns next year in search for No. 7. Sheila Arnold already has her seventh in the bag and you could tell Monday’s win meant plenty to the legendary Alice Springs horsewoman. Despite being now based in Geelong, Arnold remains a Red Centre favourite, 38 years after winning the Cup for the first time with Mallee Magic in 1975. ■■■■ FOR all the good racing Alice Springs Cup Day delivered, I’m still trying to get my head around the brilliant performance by Periduki to win his second Pioneer Sprint (1200m) last Saturday. To do what he did under 61.5kg — spotting his rivals from 6.5 to 7.5kg — by coming from a seemingly hopeless position on the turn was truly remarkable. It reminded me of the effort produced by Jade City in the 2008 Palmerston Sprint when he unleashed a blistering finish to, ironically, run down Periduki in the last stride. Popular Red Centre race- caller Shane Green summed up the emotions when he said ‘‘That is the greatest win I’ve ever seen at Pioneer Park’’ and added ‘‘Ladies and gentle- men, we have just witnessed a miracle.’’ Periduki might be prepared by South Australian trainer Mick Whittle, but he remains a quintessential Alice Springs favourite. To add another Pioneer win to his history- making success as a three- year-old just puts cream on the cake of his legacy. ■■■■ TAKING a look at the Alice Springs Cup Carnival standings and Lisa Lefoe finished as the leading trainer with six winners. Lefoe, who has won the past four Red Centre premier- ships, unveiled some smart horses during the past four weeks, but none more so than speedy filly Perfect Pause. The two-year-old filly is by Domesday out of the mare Whatyouwaitingfor, who won races in Darwin and Adelaide River during her own career, before going to the breeding barn. Of the 39 races run during the 2013 carnival, 21 were won by Centralian trainers. Interstate trainers supplied 10 winners, with Mt Isa trainer Jay Morris, Mick Whittle and John O’Loughlin (SA) each finishing with three. The trek down from Darwin paid off for Dick Leech and Kerry Petrick, who each prepared three winners, and Gary Clarke won two races. The riding honours were shared between 16 hoops with Paul Denton, Kim Gladwin and Kacie Connor each riding five winners, while Jacque Brown was not far away on four. ■■■■ DUAL Darwin Cup champion Hawks Bay produced an encouraging first-up fourth at Flemington on Saturday. In his first appearance since winning the Territory’s most famous race last August, Hawks Bay finished two and a half lengths from Strawberry Boy in the Secondbite Fresh Food Open Handicap (1400m). Trainer Neil Dyer was rapt by the performance. ‘‘It was a good run, I was very happy,’’ Dyer said. ‘‘Steven Arnold said he couldn’t have gone any better. ‘‘No matter what you put him in he is pretty honest and I did think he was going to go as well as he did.’’ Dyer will look at another 1400m at Flemington in a fortnight and step Hawks Bay up in ground before making a firm decision about chasing a third straight Darwin Cup triumph. ‘‘If he is still in one piece and we aren’t going go get weighted absolutely ridiculous, there is a chance we could have another go,’’ Dyer said. ■■■■ WITH the Alice Springs Cup Carnival over for another year, focus now shifts towards the Top End and the build-up to the 2013 Darwin Cup Carnival. Racing returns to Fannie Bay on Saturday with a five- race program scheduled. A total of 34 nominations have been taken for the meeting, with Chris Pollard, David Jupp and David Bates supplying the bulk of the entries. John Peacock is heading up from Alice Springs and nomi- nated three runners. Acceptances are out today. ■■■■ Continued Page 43
