IntroductionWelcome to the Wandsworth Sport and Physical Activity DisabilityDirectory. Through consultation with a number of disabilitycommunity groups and members of the community, WandsworthLeisure and Sport Services have produced this directory to helpremove some of the barriers for the disabled community to accesssport and physical exercise on a more regular basis.
By reading through the information in this directory you should findyourself informed and empowered to make decisions on whichlocal facilities are most accessible, identify all current and suitableactivities and gain an understanding of who manages and deliverssuch sessions.
Sport England’s Active People (2006) revealed the borough ofWandsworth had the highest percentage of people with a disabilityparticipating in sport and physical activity three times a week incentral London. Leisure and Sport Services are determined tocontinue this leading rate of participation and continue to providefurther opportunities and quality programmes that cater for alldisability groups within Wandsworth.

Benefits of physical activityRegular physical exercise can assist in weight management, maintaining your independence and improving your quality of life.
People with disabilities are less likely to engage in regular moderatephysical activity than people without disabilities, yet they have similarneeds to promote their health and prevent unnecessary disease.
An active lifestyle that includes regular exercise can:
• Lower your risk of developing heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and osteoporosis.
• Lower your blood pressure, if it’s mildly elevated.
• Help you manage your weight.
• Help you improve your cholesterol level.
• Improve your ability to cope with stress.
• Provide psychological benefits, such as improved self-image andself-confidence, better sleep and a positive outlook on life.
An active lifestyle can mean taking part in a number of activities, ranging from walking in the park, playing football, swimming at yourlocal leisure centre and even taking part in a chair-based fitnessclass. This directory will provide you with the opportunity to accesssuch activities and ultimately assist you in receiving the benefitsoutlined above.

London Taxicard Scheme for Disabled PeopleTaxicard is a method of providing subsidised door-to-door transportfor people who have serious mobility impairment and difficulty inusing public transport. Taxicard holders make journeys in licensedLondon taxis and the subsidy applies directly to each trip.
How much will my journey cost?
The Public Carriage Office sets fares for journeys made by licensedtaxis. The metered fare will be shown on the Taximeter at the end ofthe journey. The Taximeter works on a combination of both distanceand time. The Taxicard scheme is subsidised by local boroughs andthe Mayor of London, which means you pay considerably reducedfares. For most journeys you will pay a flat fare and your localauthority will pay the balance of the limit shown in the table.
1. Member Flat Fare
In most boroughs, members pay a £1.50 flat fare up to the fare limit– see below.
2. Borough Maximum Subsidy
The borough maximum subsidy per trip is the maximum amount theborough will pay towards each trip. This amount is differentdepending on the time of day and at weekends in most boroughs(Table 1). This is because it is more expensive to travel at night andweekends than on weekdays.
3. Fare Limit
The Fare Limit is the Borough Maximum Subsidy and Member FlatFare added together. If the fare on the meter is less than the farelimit, you only pay the flat fare. If the fare on the meter is more thanthe fare limit, you will have to pay the flat fare plus the differencebetween the fare limit and the meter reading.
