We all are facing numerous personal and business challenges today, much because we are

unable to find the meaning in our job/ work and life as a whole. Our job/ work play a

significant role in our lives and it is important that we find fulfilment in what we do. Work is

as much about spirit and soul as it is about salary.

Work spirituality has become a significant aspect of organizational culture in most of the

business organizations today. The values of spirituality greatly enhance the sense of

accomplishment in an individual, which impacts on the overall productivity and growth of the

organizations. Regardless of what type of job one has and how unfulfilling it might be, one

should take steps to make his/her job ´more lovable.µ Let us discover the steps to achieve

spirituality at work place.

At the individual level, spirituality at work is a distinct, multidimensional experience

characterized by cognitive, spiritual, interpersonal, and mystical dimensions. Spirit at work

involves:

Engaging work characterized by a profound feeling of well-being, a belief that one is engaged

in meaningful work that has a higher purpose, an awareness of alignment between one's valuesand beliefs and one's work, and a sense of being authentic;

A spiritual connection characterized by a sense of connection to something larger than self;

A sense of community characterized by a feeling of connectedness to others for a common

purpose; and a mystical or unitized experience characterized by a positive state of energy or

vitality, a sense of perfection, transcendence, and experiences of joy and bliss. We yearn for

work to be a place in which we both experience and express our deep soul and spirit.

We want to feel supported, we want respect, we want to belong and we want to evolve

spiritually. Money has very little to do with any of these factors. Learning to respect andaccept others helps unite us together, strengthening that universal energy that keeps us alive.

What one calls this universal energy is unimportant. It is there, whether we see it, feel it or

believe it. When we are in harmony with it, our lives are smoother and easier. When we fight

it, we are only fighting our self.

A house divided cannot stand; a person divided cannot function fully, whether in the

workplace or in our personal lives, our attitude about the world defines how our life unfolds.

Make a choice today to live the fullest life possible - filled with friends and enjoyable work.

The world will be a better place for all of us.

The philosophy of spirituality at the work place encourages the emotions of generous love,

care, humanity, creation, inner satisfaction and self fulfilment. It is a fact in today·s dynamic

business environment; organizations· performance, productivity and competence are an

exclusive outcome of leadership spirituality.

Leadership spirituality intrinsically motivates and drives an individual·s internal focus towards

organizational development by aligning their personal values with the values of organizational

vision and mission which creates a psychological affiliation between individual and the

organization and increases the level of self fulfilment at work.

Leadership spirituality provides the essence for improving the capabilities of individuals, their

productivity and growth by setting up an organizational perspective containing the values of

love, care affection, affiliation, wholeness and loyalty which builds an inner connection of the

individual with his organization.

Spirituality in the workplace promotes the expression of talent, brilliance and genius³ talent

in the sense of our Divine gifts; brilliance in terms of our intellect and the intensity of the light

we have to shine; and genius not as a scarce commodity, but as something that everyone has.

Our true job is to connect with that genius. And moreover, spirituality in the workplace also

leads to increased self-fulfilment, contentment and a deep sense of belonging. The orientation of leadership spirituality in organizational culture empowers an individual

morally and ethically by making them bold, confident and competent, which as a result

enhances their job involvement and job satisfaction. Spirituality impacts in the strong

communication and interpersonal relationship among employees by setting up a culture ofindividual support, collaboration and intrinsic motivation of employees that subsequently leads

to highly productive and satisfied work force.

The work spirituality is also found very significant in reducing the pressure, tension, anxiety

and burden of work and makes the job more enjoyable. Spirituality is found extremely

beneficial in reducing the feelings of tensions, anxiety as it aids the individual to cope with the

burden and pressure of work.

Our work is an extension of ourselves, in ways that are personal and complex. Almost any job

has some level of natural enjoyment. In strictly economic terms work that provides us with

joy, work that we would do even if we weren·t paid for it, isn·t work at all. But we all need to

make a living. The level of toil or natural enjoyment is a large factor in how various jobs are

compensated. Many people choose jobs that they enjoy doing, even though they couldearn

higher wages doing something they found more toilsome.

21st century technology has created a global society, connecting eastern and western culture

in ways never imagined. One of the greatest benefits of this is the way spirituality has evolved.

Historically, people used spirituality as a way to seek happiness and a life of purpose.

Incorporating spirituality into our hectic schedules prepares us for all that life has to offer in a

single day.

How does spirituality and work combine? Well for most of us the majority of our day is spent in

our work environment. And that affords us a great opportunity to implement our spiritual

practice. We have people to practice patients with whether they are co-workers or customers,we have people who are suffering from depression, anger, sadness, and loneliness, so have

compassion, and there is Gossip that should be avoided. One of the easiest ways to start is to

look at one·s self and pick and area that you feel you need to improve, Patience, Compassion,

or avoiding Gossip. Once you have determined what you want to begin with. Let·s say it is

patience, maybe there is one person who pushes your buttons all the time, what to do first

well they are your buttons and we have given our power away here, so by taking responsibility

we can reclaim our power and be steadfast, once we have realized that it is within our grasp

to control our responses then we can look at the other persons behaviour, and as stated in the

amazing book The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz evoke the second agreement Do Not

Take Anything Personally, from this perspective we understand what others do and say is a

projection of the current state of mind and we become immune to their poison and experience

Patient acceptance, but let·s not confuse this with a self righteous view of the other person,

by understanding they have a mind that is in pain, we can move to the next practice one of

Compassion. So as you can see the work place affords us many opportunities to put our study

into practice.

My description of spirit in the workplace is that it allows you to feel a greater sense of

connection by bringing your whole self, the essence of who you are, to a supportive

environment. It is not associated with religion. Let·s explore some key elements within this

description.

Connection. People are yearning to connect with others. Connections provide people with

meaning and a sense of belonging to something greater.

Whole self. The whole self concept encourages people to look at their life holistically ² that

they aren·t one person in their personal life and then another person in their professional

lives. In fact, business poet David Whyte explains how most of us only bring 60 percent of

ourselves to the workplace and leave the other 40 percent of our realself in the car.

Essence. Essence is about getting to your core, your inner self. Author Alexandra Stoddard

said that ´your spirit, your essence, is at the heart of everything about you.µ The only way

that you can get to the core is to go within and find your heart·s deepest desires.

Supportive environment. The other key piece is the environment. Whether it is at home or

on the job, a supportive environment is how the spirit is embraced and fostered.

N ot associated with religion. Spirit in the workplace does not promote a specific religion, it

promotes an all-inclusive and interconnected view similar to spirituality.

It is hard for some people to fathom working spiritually when you are in the middle ofconflicts, power trips, or personal agendas at work. Working spiritually doesn·t mean that

you walk around in a blissful state all the time. Sometimes you may feel that the most

spiritual you can be is to keep praying for strength to endure until you can see your way out of

a situation. Spirituality at work involves diligence, patience, and clarity as much as

compassion, authenticity, and forgiveness.

Conscious Evolution

You consciously evolve when you are aware of opportunities to change old patterns that no

longer work or expand your growing edge. Conscious evolution takes place at work as much as

in any other domain of life, particularly because we spend most of our waking hours at work.

You often don·t choose those with whom you work. Too many people find themselves workingin toxic work environments or unhealthy organizations. You are put into situations of swirling

energy that need to be carefully tended. Learning how to navigate through such conditions

and/or knowing when to leave requires careful spiritual discernment. Your work life offers

you tremendous opportunity to practice your spiritual truths.

If you are bothered by someone or in the middle of a conflict you need to consider what hot

button is getting triggered for you. That is where important spiritual work is for you at

present. At a minimum you can learn to be honest with your feelings and speak your truth with

compassion and wisdom. The bottom line (figuratively and literally) is to awaken and remain

open to your spiritual unfolding. Be intentional about your own growing edge in the midst of

chaos and conflict. That·s your spiritual work that needs to be done in addition to any

projects or job assignments you·re given.

Seeing Co-Workers as Spiritual Beings

When we remember our work life is integral to our spiritual journey, we see ourselves and

others as soul beings and know we are all here to learn lessons for our conscious evolution and

spiritual growth. Here·s a visualization you can use to reframe how you see your co-workers.

Imagine your work colleagues as soul beings. Greet them by name and thank them for being

part of your work. Affirm that you are each there for a purpose to help one another in your

spiritual journey« Surround them each in a gold or bright colored light. Send them energy

and thoughts of joy, care, compassion. Send them on their way with the thought that they are

a perfect expression of who they came here to be. Thank them for being teachers, guides and

supports for your spiritual journey to practice compassion, offer peace, and share joy. Remember that you are exactly where you need to be to live out the spiritual journey you

came to experience for your conscious evolution. Step in to it, celebrate it. Rejoice in being

the bright beautiful being that you are. We work as spiritual beings through our heart, mind,

and hands. Or as Kahlil Gibran more eloquently wrote, ´When you work, you are a flute,

through whose heart the whispering of the hours turns to music.µ

While working with spirituality, one has to have a sense and satisfaction of being a competent

and creative producer. As an employee, our spiritual self is one of the diverse strengths we

bring to the table. Simply by approaching projects, goals, and interpersonal relations in the

workplace with intention, one can pursue individual fulfilment while also doing our part to

gently promote a holistic, healthy and harmonious working environment.
