…a TRUSTed voice So 2012 is here: Olympics, Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and at the time of writing one of the hottest weeks in March – ever! Promising a great year for Britain and Moat House alike! This edition of Spirit Quarterly once again captures the developments

in the area, thanks to the Purple Patch team and all the contributors who do a great job of ensuring it’s always informative, lively and entertaining; so I’m very proud to have the opportunity to write this column.

As ever, there has been so much going on, you will read about: 100th home owner; successful time capsule ceremony; second phase of Spirit Quarters on site; plus exciting plans for the Community Games.

We have seen the hedge come down on Henley Road; welcomed our first tenant into Moat House Business Centre and we’re exploring further, exciting opportunities for the leisure centre; Henley College has a £6m development scheme underway; Moat House Cafe goes from strength to strength, extending its opening hours – Anne and team would love you to pop in - for a chat, a drink, breakfast or lunch but be warned those puds are very tempting!!

Meanwhile Moat House Community Trust continues to work on your behalf with Martin Smith challenging Centro, calling on the support of councillors and MPs, as well as coordinating meetings - you can read more about us on p10.

Welcome to the Spring edition of Spirit Quarterly

Naming our new streetsWith the second phase in full swing at Spirit Quarters, local people have been helping to name new streets in Wood End.

Suggestions for street names with a ‘wildlife’ theme were originally put forward by visitors at the Moat House Fun Day and members of Wood End Pensioners Luncheon Club.

Now these names have now been shortlisted by the Regeneration Action Team and the City Council before residents vote for the final street names!

I’m so pleased to be asked to contribute to this edition of Spirit Quarterly. At Keepmoat Homes we aim to build not just homes but also communities, and this magazine is a shining example of how something great can be produced when everyone in an area works together.

We started on site at the Spirit Quarters development in early 2010 after many years of hard work involving residents through the planning and legal process, however as a business we have operated throughout the country long before that, and I can safely say that the response shown by residents in North East Coventry is among the best we have seen.

We’re certain that the Spirit Quarters project is doing really positive things for the area and I am really looking forward to continuing to being part of this exciting regeneration project, helping local people and those from outside of the area to find new homes which are perfectly suited to them.

We are currently marketing phase 2 from our show home on the corner of Deedmore Road and Petitor Crescent, 230 homes, of which 86 are for Whitefriars for rent, shared ownership and low cost home ownership and 144 are for sale by Keepmoat. We are offering a mix of 3 and 4 bed houses and 2 bed Coach Houses and I am really pleased to report a fantastic response to the first release of this phase with 70% already having been reserved!

Moving forward we will be working with our partners to indentify the next phase for development and I appreciate the opportunity for Keepmoat to be involved in the continued transformation of Spirit Quarters.

Residents joined former 5,000m world record holder David Moorcroft to bury a time capsule at Spirit Quarters in February.

The Coventry-born running legend provided a helping hand to bury the specially prepared container to mark the completion of the first phase of the scheme.

The capsule was buried under new landscaping at Dering Close and contained carefully collected details about everything from the cost of bread to petrol prices along with historical photos to show future generations what life was like before the redevelopment started in 2010.

Wood End resident Janet Barratt, also a member of the residents Regeneration Action Team said: “It was a really special day and residents are feeling really positive about the future of their area. When the time capsule is found in years to come, we hope

local people get a sense of what life was like back in the day.”

David Moorcroft OBE said: “I’m honoured to have been invited to bury the time capsule to mark this key milestone in the regeneration. I have many memories of this neighbourhood as my wife used to work at Deedmore Primary and I would often come running here when I was training at the peak of my career. It’s great to see the changing face of the neighbourhood and celebrate this with local people.”

Local secondary school Grace Academy has received a grant worth £450 from cereal company Kellogg’s to help the schools Breakfast Club.

Grace Academy is one of 500 schools from across the country to receive the grant after research by Kellogg’s revealed that one in eight breakfast clubs have been forced to close because of budget cuts.

Kellogg’s launched the Help Give a Child a Breakfast campaign last year to help bridge the funding gap for schools as research showed the negative impact the closure of breakfast clubs could have according to teaching professionals across the UK.

Reports show that 62% of school teachers felt that the lack of breakfast clubs in schools would have a negative impact on the behavioural and psychological growth of children as breakfast helps them to remain active during the day.

Michelle Finn, Extended Schools Coordinator at Grace Academy said: “Breakfast clubs are a lifeline for many children but with budgets being tight they could sadly become an unaffordable luxury in future”.

“This grant will really help our breakfast club and we will be spending the money on some new equipment and games for the children as well as a selection of the children’s favourite cereal bars and juices.”

What’s happening at Godiva Awakes?

Saturday 28th July: Lady Godiva will ‘awake’ at Millennium Square where there will be performances involving dancers, actors, aerialists, musicians and pyrotechnicians,

Sunday 29th July: Carnival acts and 220 young people will process through city centre before Lady Godiva starts her journey down to London where she will make a spectacular entrance at the Olympics.

Costume making for city centre celebrations

Local residents have been getting into the Olympic spirit by preparing for a once-in-a-lifetime event this summer.

80 residents from the four local neighbourhoods will be joining other Coventry citizens in a special procession at the 2012 City Olympiad celebrations taking place in the city centre on 28th and 29th July.

The weekend celebration will see a carnival style procession behind a six metre high technetronic Lady Godiva who will be mechanically powered with the aid of 50 cyclists at a time.

“It’s going to be a really special celebration so it’s great that local people in this area will have the chance to get involved,” said Carol Speed, Community Connections Officer at Neighbourhood Action.

To help make costumes for Godiva Awakes, three dedicated mums have been attending regular workshops with Imagineer Productions where they have learnt carnival techniques and design so they can teach costume design in their own communities.

“These ladies are all from the local area and will be employed to deliver the workshops over the next few weeks to help their own communities create stunning costumes,” said Carol.

Godiva Awakes is part of Artists Taking the Lead, a series of 12 public art commissions across the UK to celebrate the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad, funded by Arts Council England. The project is also supported by Coventry City Council and is part of the Cities 2012 programme.

Celebrations as next phase kicks off!Residents and partners were in high spirits after work started on the second phase at Spirit Quarters.

This means developers will now build 144 new homes for sale, 60 for affordable rent (Whitefriars) and 26 for low cost home-ownership along Lapworth Road and River Walk.

“It’s fantastic to see some action on the ground as it’s something the people in this area have been looking forward to for a long time. We’ve seen how the redevelopment has

progressed down the road in Deedmore and now we can’t wait to see new homes being built in Wood End,” said local resident Janet Barratt.

Top 10 tips to keep your house safe

Residents can now watch a two-minute video which gives tips on how to make their homes more secure.

West Midlands Police have introduced a quick-fire style video which can be watched on your phone or computer to

help people to take simple measures to reduce the chances of burglary in their home.

The short film highlights ten quick tips like locking windows, not leaving keys in view and locking away ladders which can help to secure your home and put off burglars. The video was created to get help prevent burglaries in the Midlands and since the release of the video, burglary figures have dropped to 3,000 fewer victims this year as compared to last year when the crime rate was high.

The Mission is already running a number of services for local people and is currently looking for new people and groups to use the building to help develop their services.

“We want the community to be involved by giving their ideas on what could happen in the centre, and can offer these facilities for local groups too,” said Darren Burgess, Director for Coventry City Mission.

Ideas for future projects include a learning room; a kitchen garden project called “Seeds of Hope” and a Job Club.

The building comprises of a meeting/training room as well as a large area purpose built for crèche facilities. There are several smaller rooms which would be ideal for counselling/meeting rooms or office space if required.

Local families joined in with festivities when Moat House Leisure and Neighbourhood Centre celebrated its three year birthday in March.

To mark the anniversary, a community fun day was held on Saturday March 24th at the centre with fun activities like football, zumba, face painting, a bouncy castle and a barbeque.

Community groups who turned up on the day to show their support included local Resident Associations, Wood End Community Centre, Circle of Friends and Warwickshire Wildlife Trust. All monies that were raised on the day went to Sport Relief

Since opening in 2009 the centre has gone from strength to strength and in the last year we have welcomed 220,000 people through our doors – nearly double since we opened three years ago!” said Richard Marrs, Centre Manager.

The £11m centre on Winston Avenue was built in 2009 after local residents prioritised funding to build a community hub which would bring together leisure, neighbourhood and community facilities.

Centre celebrates three years on

The centre is also home to Moat House Community Trust, Wood End Advice Centre, Neighbourhood Action (CCC), North East Social Services (CCC) and North East Multi Disciplinary Team (CCC).

“Three years on and it’s fantastic to see more and more people using the centre which has become a real community resource,” said Alan Tyrrell, a local resident who was involved in the original plans.

Your free thermocardCommunity art to help cut crimeLocal residents have been working together to create a new mural at Doctor Phillips shopping centre in Wood End.

The community came together to help design the artwork after Wood End Residents Action Group (WERAG) successfully bid for money to make the side entrance near Wappenbury Road safer.

“The area near the steps used to be very dark, smelly and unwelcoming, there were concerns about personal safety for many of my customers,” said a local shopkeeper.

After consulting with young people and business owners at Dr Phillips, the resident’s group suggested that the cash was used to fit new lighting and a mural – similar to one which already exists on the other side of the building – to help improve visibility and attractiveness in the area.

With the support of Neighbourhood Action (Coventry City Council), WERAG successfully applied for £3,500 from the Crime Innovation Fund to run art workshops for the local community to involve them in the project. Coventry City Council has agreed to pay for the maintenance of the new lights in the future.

The new mural is now completed and is already helping to improve the local area and make it look more inviting for everyone to use.

“I use this entrance on a regular basis and it looks much better already, I hope it encourages people to use their local shops.” said Ray Maher.

Local residents are being reminded about the importance of keeping their home warm by using a FREE thermo card from a new citywide initiative.

The Keeping Coventry Warm partnership, a project funded by the department of health, has launched a campaign to

help vulnerable citizens living in poorly insulated homes resulting in high energy bills.

The card will help you to monitor your room temperature and advises what action to take if you are at risk. There are also a number of useful telephone numbers on the back.

As part of the campaign, organisations across the city have teamed up to offer a number of free support services to vulnerable citizens to help reduce the number of people suffering by making their homes energy efficient ahead of next winter:

What are the aims of the Trust?The Trusts overall aim is to create a prosperous and powerful community where people are proud to live or work. It wants to do this by…

- Bringing employment, training and business opportunities to the areas for local people- Making sure that residents continue to be supported through the Spirit Quarters redevelopment- Bringing health and lifestyle programmes to encourage people to live healthier lives - Working with public bodies to make sure environment, health services, education, housing and crime prevention remain a priority for the neighbourhood- Providing a hub for local residents and community groups to hold meetings and run an open door policy

If Moat House Community Trust is a charity, where do its funds come from?Fortunately the Trust has inherited some funds and assets from the former NDC programme which is paying for current running costs, however the Trust also has two different arms which bring in an ‘income’.

The enterprise arm (Moat House Enterprises Ltd) consists of three different businesses (called social enterprises) which employ people to ‘make’ money for the Trust. The three enterprises are:

Purple Patch - A communications and design agencyMoat House Café – A community café based inside the leisure centreMoat House Business Centre – Office and industrial space under one roof at Alderman Greens

The charity arm (Moat House Community Trust) brings money into the charity through traditional methods like fundraising and applying for grants to benefit the local community. Recently the Trust has been successful in bidding for funding to deliver ICT training for over 50s and employment support training for young people

How does the Trust operate? On a day to day basis the Trust is run by a small core team which is overseen by a board of Directors. The board, all of whom are unpaid volunteers, meet on a regular basis to make important decisions and decide what the charity needs to do to improve the local area. This board is made up of a majority of local residents and other organisations which have a vested interest in the area (City Council, Whitefriars, local businesses and voluntary organisations)

What is Moat House Community Trust?Moat House Community Trust is a community based charity which has been set up to continue the improvements in Wood End, Henley Green, Manor Farm and Deedmore since the New Deal for Communities Programme ended in April 2011

What has the Trust done to achieve these aims?Although the last 12 months have been heavily focused on setting up the core structure and developing the three social enterprises, the Trust has also:

- Provided free social media training for residents, organised free employment support in the area and looked at new social enterprise ideas for create more jobs in the area- Made sure local people have been regularly updated about the Spirit Quarters redevelopment through Purple Patch - Worked with City Council to develop projects around healthy eating- Refreshed comminity agreements with Police, Fire Service and City Council to demonstrate ongoing commitment around residents problems like street lighting, buses and litter- Run regular meetings where all four neighbourhoods can continue to put forward their issues (WEHM Committee), run a One Voice community conference, supported local resident associations and regularly attended Tea and Talk held every Tuesday

A warm welcome for 100th homeowner

Mike and Cherlyn Rees were the 100th homeowners to move into Spirit Quarters this year after moving homes in January.

The couple, who are the proud parents to baby Daniel, used to live on the Woodloes Estate in Warwick before they bought a three-bedroomed house in Deedmore. They moved into the new property earlier this year.

“When we bought the property in November I was heavily pregnant so we were looking to move into a house which offered us more space and needed little work. Daniel was born in December and we moved in after the new year so it all worked out really well,” said new mum Cherlyn.

The couple had looked at other new build properties in Coventry before they visited Spirit Quarters. After visiting Bovis Homes, they quickly decided to buy the three-bedroomed Beardsley property, which made them the 100th homeowner.

Mike, who works at St Michael’s Hospital in Warwick said: “When we were researching into buying a new home we realised we could get better value for our money simply by moving 10 miles up from Warwick. With our first baby on the way, we wanted to start saving towards the future and the move to Coventry has helped us to do that.”

To mark the momentous occasion Vicky Scott, Chair of the local residents association, welcomed the new family by presenting them with a bouquet of flowers.

Vicky Scott said: “It’s fantastic to welcome Mike, Cherlyn and baby Daniel to our neighbourhood, one of many new families who are moving into the area. It feels like just the other day when work first started on this site. It really is exciting seeing the neighbourhood change day by day.”

This spring the Sowe Valley in Wood End will begin to be transformed as the new footpath is installed and planting along the river can begin!

The Sowe Valley Project, which is part funded by Spirit Quarters developers BKW, has been working with local residents since October 2009 to improve eight miles of the River Sowe from Wood End to Whitley.

During that time the Sowe Valley Volunteers have worked tirelessly to remove rubbish, survey stretches, plant native species and host community events.

This spring it is your chance to get involved. The Sowe Valley Project, in partnership with Keepmoat Homes, are organising some community planting days along the river in Wood End and are keen to hear from people who may be interested in lending a helping hand!

Anna Squires, Sowe Valley Project Coordinator said, “We are really looking forward to working alongside the local community to plant up the ‘Sowe Valley Parkland’ area of Wood End with trees, shrubs and wildflowers. We hope the planting will make big difference for both people and wildlife in the area”.

The Sowe Valley Project has received £211,512 of funding from Natural England’s Access to Nature Programme, funded by £25m from the Big Lottery Fund’s Changing Space programme. The project has also received funding from the Environment Agency, BKW housing consortium and kind donations from Warwickshire Wildlife Trust members. It is also supported by Coventry City Council.

Recently there have been incidents of people stealing the bins and causing anti social behaviour by setting them alight. This then causes distress for the person who has

Sheila’s RecipeEasy Bakewell Cake Serves 6 - 8

Ingredients150(5½oz) golden caster sugar150g (5½ oz) self raising flour150g(5½oz) ground almonds2 large free range eggs1tsp vanilla extract6tsp raspberry jam1x 150g punnet raspberries50g (1¾oz) flaked almonds

PREPARATIONPreheat the oven to 180 ºC/ fan 160 ºC/ gas 4. Line a 22-24cm (8½-9½in) spring form cake tin with baking parchment.

Using a food processor or electric whisk, mix the butter, sugar, flour, ground almonds, eggs and vanilla extract together.

Place half of the mix into a lined cake tin and smooth it over. Then dot the jam, half a teaspoon at a time, all over and scatter with the raspberries.

With the remainder of the cake mix, drop dollops over the fruit to cover, but don’t worry about the holes- just use your fingers to spread it about a bit.

Scatter the flaked almonds over and bake for 45-50 minutes until golden brown.

Serve warm with hot chocolate, coffee or on a bowl of ice-cream.
