Dear parents This term is very busy for our Year 13 students because several IB Diploma final course work sub- missions, such as the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge essay, are due and this is the big term for university applicaons to be processed. Students who have followed our academic calendar and the university applicaon advice during their AIC educaon are fully aware well in advance of these deadlines, so that Term 2 of Year 13 is manageable for them. One of the advantages of the IB Diploma is that it relies not only on ex- ams at the end of Year 13. Internal assessment is completed and submied to the IBO well before then, allowing workload to be paced. AIC alumni tell us repeatedly that the style of IB learning and assessment prepares them extremely well for university study and deadlines. Time manage- ment is probably the most significant study/life skill students learn at AIC. As parents you can assist. The Year 11 Preparaon Year Programme for the IB Diploma is an ap- propriate me not only to acquire the basic learning skills and knowledge needed for the IB Diplo- ma itself, but is also the me to build a quality extra-curricular CV for university applicaons ahead. Our students have many opportunies to parcipate in extra-curricular acvies. Individ- ual and group pursuits are encouraged. Year 12 is the year of leadership opportunies in CAS (Creavity Acon and Service), because Year 12 students need only to submit to the CAS Coordinator a proposal signed by a teacher leader to start a club or acvity. Proacve leadership is encouraged. This also enhances a CV. A list of most of the current CAS acvies is included in this newsleer. Our students are achiev- ing outside the classroom at the highest levels. We have golf, badminton, table tennis, maral arts and chess naonal champions, to list just some of them. Dear parents This term is very busy for our Year 13 students because several IB Diploma final course work sub-missions, such as the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge essay, are due and this is the big term for university applications to be processed. Students who have followed our academic calendar and the university application advice during their AIC education are fully aware well in advance of these deadlines, so that Term 2 of Year 13 is manageable for them. One of the advantages of the IB Diploma is that it relies not only on ex-ams at the end of Year 13. Internal assessment is completed and submitted to the IBO well before then, allowing workload to be paced. AIC alumni tell us repeatedly that the style of IB learning and assessment prepares them extremely well for university study and deadlines. Time manage-ment is probably the most significant study/life skill students learn at AIC. As parents you can assist. The Year 11 Preparation Year Programme for the IB Diploma is an ap-propriate time not only to acquire the basic learning skills and knowledge needed for the IB Diplo-ma itself, but is also the time to build a quality extra-curricular CV for university applications ahead. Our students have many opportunities to participate in extra-curricular activities. Individ-ual and group pursuits are encouraged. Year 12 is the year of leadership opportunities in CAS (Creativity Action and Service), because Year 12 students need only to submit to the CAS Coordinator a proposal signed by a teacher leader to start a club or activity. Proactive leadership is encouraged. This also enhances a CV. A list of most of the current CAS activities is included in this newsletter. Our students are achiev-

ing outside the classroom at the highest levels. We have golf, badminton, table tennis, martial

arts and chess national champions, to list just some of them. We acknowledge in this newsletter

two AIC students who have achieved the highest level in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award.

We have active community service on local and international levels. We are often perceived as

the academic school because of high IB Diploma results, national Olympiad selections, perfect

scores and top places in academic competitions. However, we are much more than that.

Kind regards

Carolyn Solomon Principal

Sailing on the Spirit of New Zealand: Trophy Challenge for AIC Year 11 Students

AIC has been allocated another Trophy Challenge Voyage on the tall ship ‘Spirit of New Zealand’. This is a five day sailing trip for students in Year 11. AIC will put a team of five female and five male students together, who will go sailing in the Hauraki Gulf with an AIC teacher from 7-11 April 2014. The AIC team will compete against three teams from other schools in New Zealand; the team with most points at the end of the voyage wins the Trophy. Activities include: team work, problem-solving, debates, ship-handling, singing, aquatic sports, meal preparation and cleaning, many competitions and an onshore day. The costs of this amazing opportuni-ty are $675, plus the costs of getting the compulsory medical paperwork signed off by the student’s GP. Depending on the interest of Year 11 students, the selection for this trip will likely be done through a lottery system. If your child is interested in signing up for this voyage, but has questions or concerns, please ask one of the students in Year 13 who went on such a voyage in November 2011: Rosanna Cen, Phillip Kim, Shaun Lim, Katherine Zhang, Andrew Jun, Steven Wang, Nicole Tsoi, Margaret Zhou, or Laura Oh. Students wishing to apply should see Miss Keeman [email protected] by 2 December

Year 11 student, Jessica Ge, who competed in the National Taekwando Championship, won a gold medal in the Junior Female 15-17 Team category and a silver medal in the Jun-ior 15-17 Pair category. Jae Young, similarly, won second place in the Taekwondo

National Championships in Kyorugi (sparring) in her weight

division.

Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award at AIC Auckland International College is actively involved in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award. This is a voluntary, non-competitive programme of leisure activities for those aged 14 - 25, designed to offer a personal and individual challenge. It introduces young people to exciting, positive, challenging and enjoyable experiences in their free time. It encourages friendships amongst those taking part, and across the generations with adults who give up time to share skills and help organise the programme. Over 140 countries around the world participate in the Duke of Edinburgh Award making it a world-renowned qualification which looks impressive on any student’s university application or CV. How does it work? Through a four section programme with three levels. The levels are:

Bronze - open to all aged 14 and over and lasting at least 6 months

Silver - open to all aged 15 and over and lasting at least 12 months Gold - open to all aged 16 and over and lasting at least 18 months The Sections are:

Service - giving help in the local community Skills - covering almost any non-physical hobby, skill or interest Adventurous Journey - training for, practising, planning and completing a journey on foot, horse-

back or by boat or cycle Physical Recreation - sport, dance and fitness Residential Project - for the Gold level only - spending 5 or more days on a purposeful project

with new companions

Who can participate in this Programme? Students aged 14 and over. To sign up for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award a student must ac-quire a registration form from reception or Mr Montgomerie, teacher in charge of AIC Duke of Edin-burgh’s Hillary Award programme. Registration costs $64 for each level and the tramps can cost any-where from $100 to $300.

Two AIC students, David Moon and Carlene Kim, have achieved the Hillary Award’s highest level—Gold. Pictures show David Moon and other volunteers building a path and steps at the CUE Haven prop-erty in Araparera where David completed the Residential Pro-ject section of the Hillary Award.
