WELCOME

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the award-winning Spirit of Freedom! The Freedom High School

Marching Band is a great activity that helps develop confidence, positive attitude, self-esteem, cooperation, and self-

discipline. It also gives members the thrill of performing in a great band in front of lots of enthusiastic fans. It takes a great

deal of time, discipline, and dedication, but the rewards are well worth the effort.

We take great pride in our Marching Band at Freedom High School and look at

membership as a privilege and an honor. Each member will be held to the following

expectations:

1. Show respect to the people around you

2. Always put forth a dedicated effort

3. Be someone others can count on

4. Be willing to sacrifice self-interest for the benefit of the team

5. Make results, not excuses

Everyone needs to thoroughly read the information in this handbook! It contains all the information needed to

guide us towards a successful season. We look forward to working with each and every one of you as we strive towards

excellence!

WHAT IS THE SPIRIT OF FREEDOM?

More than 150 members strong, the Spirit of Freedom is one of the largest and most popular co-curricular activities at

Freedom High School. Marching Band consists of brass, woodwind, and percussion players plus a color guard. The band

performs at home football games on Friday nights and in competitions on five Saturdays through early

November. Marching Band is encouraged but not required for students enrolled in band classes.

ELIGIBILITY

Course Requirements

● Brass and woodwind players must be enrolled in a band class

● Percussion players must be enrolled in a music class (band, orchestra, guitar, or chorus)

● Student leaders must be enrolled in a band class (except colorguard)

● Colorguard members do not need to be enrolled in a music class

● Students who do not meet the eligibility requirements will be not be accepted into the organization.

Instrumentation Requirements

● Brass and woodwind players are not eligible for membership in the percussion section unless

special permission is granted. Brass, woodwinds, and colorguard are where we need the most number of

performers and accepting too many percussionists would be detrimental.

Academic Requirements

● All members must remain in good academic standing at all times. Students with failing grades will be suspended

or dismissed from the organization.

Honors Weighting

● 10th-12th grade students enrolled in a band class will receive 0.5 honors weighting for your band

class.

Substitutions

● French horn players play mellophone. Fingerings and mouthpiece size are similar.

● Trombone players play baritone or euphonium. The only difference is pushing buttons instead of moving a slide.

The mouthpiece and range is exactly the same.

● Woodwind players who play one of the instruments listed above can easily learn another woodwind instrument,

play percussion or electronics, or join colorguard.

● Freedom High School will provide instruments in these circumstances.

TRYOUTS

Prospective members must attend all tryout sessions unless there is a reasonable conflict you have pre-

arranged with the Band Director.

What to expect

● Brass and Woodwinds

○ Wear comfortable, athletic-type clothing and sneakers with socks. ○ Bring a water bottle.

○ Flute, clarinet, bass clarinet, saxophone, and trumpet players should bring an instrument. If you need to borrow a school-owned instrument, please email Mr. Galway.

○ French horn and tuba players should bring a mouthpiece. An instrument will be provided. ○ Trombone and euphonium players should bring a large-shank mouthpiece if you have one. If you do not

have one, we have one you can borrow, or you can purchase one (recommendations are listed later in this document). An instrument will be provided.

○ On the last day, there is a brief tryout consisting of a short musical performance and a demonstration of

marching techniques covered during camp.

● Percussion

○ Wear comfortable, athletic-type clothing and sneakers with socks. ○ You do not need to bring any sticks, mallets, or instruments. Everything will be provided. ○ Bring a water bottle. ○ During tryouts, you will play many different instruments so the staff can assess your strengths and

weaknesses. ○ On the last day, there is a brief tryout consisting of a short musical performance.

● Colorguard

○ Who should attend?

■ All Freedom High school students are invited to attend. Our staff will assess each participant's

skill level and assist them, regardless of skill level, making sure everyone has the most educational

experience possible.

○ I’m only auditioning for the colorguard, when do I attend?

■ If you are auditioning for the colorguard, you are auditioning for the marching band. Like the

clarinet section, the trumpet section, or saxophone section, colorguard is a section in the

marching band. Participation is required for all tryout dates. The final day will consist of the final

audition including all the performing skills and techniques taught at the previous sessions.

○ What will happen during colorguard auditions?

■ Auditions will be an evaluation of how well you perform in a real colorguard rehearsal setting.

Performance styles, dance styles, flag skills, techniques, and other philosophies will be explored

during the audition. There will be things at the audition that will push you and expand your

performance horizons and it is okay if you do not achieve something right away, colorguard skills

take time. The goal of our auditions is to give you the tools, ideas, to experience what it is like to

be a part of the Spirit of Freedom colorguard.

○ What to wear/bring?

■ Prospective members are expected to wear comfortable, fitting, dance or athletic attire with

athletic sneakers or dance sneakers. Please, NO JEANS! Hair should be pulled back, nicely, and

out of the face. Make sure to bring water and a small towel, as it can get sweaty. You do not need

to bring your own equipment. We will have equipment provided for you.

○ My ride is not participating in auditions, may they come in and watch?

■ Our audition space is for prospective members only. However, there will be a parent meeting

hosted by the Freedom High School Band Booster Association.

TRYOUT RESULTS

Students can earn one of the following two types of positions:

1. Regular Member: Full-time position in the competition show.

● Brass and woodwind players will be assigned to a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd part if applicable. Balanced

instrumentation is paramount, so it may be necessary to move some students to other instruments, especially

tuba. Be willing to sacrifice self-interest for the benefit of the team!

● Percussion players will be placed on the instrument that best fits the students’ current skill set while

maintaining a balanced instrumentation.

● Colorguard candidates will earn a spot in the show. Flag, sabre, and rifle lines will be determined during

summer camp.

2. Reserve Member: Reserve members initially serve as backup performers and do not have a full-time position in the

competition show. Reserve members will perform at football games and can earn a position in the competition show if a

regular member becomes drops out, becomes injured, or fails to meet expectations.

When tryouts are complete, each member will receive a contract that defines the position and part

assignment. This contract must be returned along with a $225 deposit payment no later than the last day

of the school year.

COMMITMENT

It is expected that if you accept your position and commit to membership in the Spirit

of Freedom Marching Band, you remain a member for the entire season. Because we

write our competition show based on the exact number commitments we receive after

tryouts, quitting at any point after that hurts the band and its membership.

Losing a member will force us to either (1) Try to find a replacement, (2) Rewrite the show to

exclude the person who quit, or (3) Perform our show with an “open hole” in the visual design. None

are desirable options. If at any point you feel overwhelmed or frustrated, Mr. Galway’s

office is always open. Stop by to talk about it.

ATTENDANCE POLICIES

Good attendance is VITAL to our success as an organization. Simply put, you cannot

contribute if you are not present. When you are absent, you will miss important information and

will fall behind putting the overall quality of the whole band at risk. The absence of one person not

only affects that person, but also the entire group. Balance, precision, spacing, and alignment

cannot be improved or maintained with absences. By joining, you are making a commitment

to the organization. Be someone others can count on!

ATTENDANCE POLICIES FROM JULY UNTIL SCHOOL STARTS

● Band Camp and Percussion/Colorguard Camp is mandatory and no student is permitted to miss

ANY PART OF these rehearsals. Do not schedule vacations, doctor’s appointments, SAT prep classes, or

any other events on these dates. Exceptions MAY be granted by the Band Director if discussed well enough in

advance.

● No student may miss more than three (3) shorter 3-5 hour rehearsals

○ Arriving late or leaving early counts as ½ absence

○ There is no distinction between excused and unexcused absences. Think of these as ‘sick days’ similar to

what an employer would give you.

ATTENDANCE POLICIES FOR PERFORMANCES

● PERFORMANCES ARE NOT TO BE MISSED, PERIOD. Check the calendar carefully to make sure you

can commit to all performance dates. When a student is missing from a performance, we will be

forced to march an ‘open hole’ which will negatively affect how we are judged.

● Again, Freedom High School policy states that students must arrive at school by 9:30 AM and

remain in school all day in order to participate in a Marching Band rehearsal or performance.

Exceptions are granted for tardies and early dismissals when accompanied by a note from a medical office.

● The only legitimate excuses for missing a performance are extreme illness (a doctor’s note may

be requested), death in the family, or a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence such as a wedding to a

close family member. All other absences will be considered unexcused and you will be dismissed from the

organization.

COMMUNICATION AND IMPORTANT WEBSITES

Please make sure you have a valid email address on file. If you have a question and need to email a staff

member, the STUDENT, not the parent, is encouraged to send the email in order to foster a culture of personal

MEMBERSHIP FEE

The Marching Band fee for 2019 is $450. The fee covers approximately 75% of the Marching Band’s total expenses

for the season. The remaining expenses are covered by the Band Boosters via fundraising (approx. 15%) and LCPS

(approx. 10%).

The payment schedule is:

● $225 is due by the last day of the 2019 school year along with your signed contract. The show will be

designed based on the number of deposits and contracts received on this date.

● $225 is due by Monday, July 29.

BRASS AND WOODWINDS

The school will provide bass clarinets, tenor saxophones, baritone saxophones, mellophones,

baritones, euphoniums, and tubas.

● Instruments will be issued at tryouts and need to be taken home on the final day of tryouts.

● Students using school-owned instruments are responsible for providing their own supplies such as a

mouthpiece, ligature, reeds, neck strap, etc. We do have a very limited quantity of these items on hand to

borrow, but please do your best to obtain these items on your own. Suggestions are listed in the next section.

PERCUSSION

All instruments, sticks, drum heads and mallets will be provided by the school under the following

conditions:

● Battery sticks must be taped for durability. Do not use non-taped sticks or mallets.

● Students will be held financially responsible for loss or damage due to misuse.

● We have a limited budget for sticks, mallets and drum heads, so once the money runs out, we will not be able to

purchase any more replacements. Treat everything with care and try to make it last.

COLORGUARD

CARE OF EQUIPMENT

School-owned instruments and equipment must be handled with extreme care. Students will be held

financially responsible for damage due to misuse or neglect.

BRASS AND WOODWINDS

General Care:

● Brass and woodwind instruments must be in good working condition at all times. Broken instruments must

be repaired immediately. Bring maintenance issues to the staff’s attention as soon as they known.

○ Student-Owned Instruments: There are several good music stores in the area for repair of student-

owned instruments. Ask for a loaner instrument from the repair shop so you are not without an

instrument for an extended period of time.

○ School-Owned Instruments: Repair of school-owned instruments must be handled through the county-

provided service contractor. Do not repair school-owned instruments on your own.

○ Keep the finish clean and polished.

● Avoid setting your instrument on a paved surface (causes scratching). When placing your instrument on the

ground, set in grass or on a towel.

● NEVER stand your instrument on its bell (it WILL get knocked over and the bell will become creased). Always

place it flat on the ground.

● All brass and woodwind players are required to have a lyre that securely clamps onto your instrument. Damaged

or lost lyres need to be replaced ASAP.

● If using a school-owned instrument or mouthpiece, students will be held financially responsible for any loss or

damage beyond normal wear and tear.

Woodwind-Specific Care:

● Reed players must have 4 working reeds at all times or use a Legere synthetic reed. Store your reeds in a

reed case so they lay flat to dry. Reeds that are not dried properly will warp and will need replaced sooner.

This strategy for reed care will save you money, rescue you from unnecessary frustration, and

help you play with a high-quality, consistent tone at all times.

● Rain can damage pads. If we are caught outside in bad weather, do your best to protect the instrument from

getting excessively wet.

● Woodwind instruments get out of adjustment rather easily if you are not careful. If certain notes are harder to

play than others, your instrument is out of adjustment. Common reasons for out-of-adjustment woodwind

instruments:

○ Bent keys caused by setting the instrument down awkwardly

○ Dropping the instrument

○ Not storing the instrument in its case properly

If ANY note is difficult to play on your instrument, you must have it repaired immediately.

Clarinet and saxophone mouthpieces must have a patch where your top teeth rest.

Mouthpieces should be cleaned WEEKLY. Use a soft-bristle cleaning brush (Mr. Galway has many), a mild

detergent, and COLD WATER (never hot water). Failing to clean mouthpieces will result in mold and protein

buildup.

Brass-Specific Care:

● Oil valves at least every other day.

● Lubricate tuning slides and at least once per month. Use slide grease on tuning slides, NOT VALVE OIL.

● Excessive denting is a sign of neglect. If your instrument is getting dented frequently, please reexamine your

care procedures and make adjustments. Students will be held financially responsible for excessive damage.

● Trumpets: You MUST have a 3rd valve ring during rehearsals and performances. You will need to take the ring

out to install your lyre for stands music, but it must be re-installed prior to rehearsals or performances. If you

lose your ring, bring it to Mr. Galway’s attention immediately. If your valve slides do not work, please have them

repaired immediately.

● Do not drop your mouthpiece. If the shank is anything less than completely round, your tone quality will suffer.

See a staff member for a quick repair. Do not use a mouthpiece with a scratched rim with raw brass exposed.

● Mouthpieces should be cleaned WEEKLY. Use a soft-bristle brush (Mr. Galway has many), a mild detergent,

and water.

BATTERY PERCUSSION

● Battery instruments must remain covered except for performances.

● Instruments must be clean prior to public performance.

● Stands must be broken down and returned to the bins after use.

● When handling cases, DO NOT carry them by their fabric straps WHICH WILL BREAK. Direct parent

volunteers to do the same. Always handle cases by their metal handles.

● Students will be held financially responsible for any damage to instruments, sticks, and mallets beyond normal

wear and tear.

FRONT ENSEMBLE

● Pit instruments must be covered except when in use.

● Mallets are not to be stored in the mallet bags attached to your instrument. The staff will outline he mallet

storage procedures that need to be followed.

● Be careful when moving instruments to avoid rolling over curbs, uneven surfaces, or anything that could

damage the instrument. Direct pit helpers and parent volunteers to do the same.

● Pit instruments must be returned to their correct locations in the corner of the band room after use.

● Check your instrument frequently to make sure screws are tightened and parts are in good working order.

Report missing or broken parts to the staff ASAP.

● Do not make any adjustments to the audio mixer without permission from the staff. The mixer is set to levels

that balance the electronics to the whole band and minor adjustments can have a tremendously negative

impact. Ask first.

● Students will be held financially responsible for any damage to instruments, sticks, and mallets beyond normal

wear and tear.

COLORGUARD

● Only colorguard members are allowed to handle guard equipment.

● Pom Poms are only to be used while learning stand routines and during pep rallies and football games. Poms

must be stored in bins with lid off during marching band season and covered during off season.

● Flags:

○ Must rolled after each rehearsal.

○ Are only to be handled by the pole. Never pick up a flag by the silk.

○ Must have weights properly taped and secured to both ends of the pole.

○ Must have rubber stoppers on both sides of the pole covered with the appropriate colored tape.

○ Poles must have cheater tape.

● Rifles:

○ Must be taped before spinning (neck, tip, end, and along the barrel of the rifle).

○ Must have black cheater tape before spinning.

○ Strap bolts must be taped before spinning.

● Sabres:

○ Must have white cheater tape along the bottom or top of blade and must be replaced at the end of each

week.

○ Must have sabre tips taped to the end of the blade.

○ Bolts must be tightened at the end of rehearsals.

MUSIC AND DRILL

SHOW MUSIC AND WARM-UPS

● All sheet music for the competition show and warm-ups must be kept in a 3-ring binder with

sheet protectors. The binder will help keep music organized and the sheet protectors will help keep it from

blowing away in the wind or getting ruined when it rains. Students must have their binder with them at all times

for rehearsal.

● If you lose your music, you need to print it on your own via Google Classroom. Do not lose music!

● You must have your music binder at every rehearsal

DRILL

● Each marching member will receive coordinate sheets for the show on heavy card stock. These are used to find

your spots on the field and recheck your spots throughout the season.

● You must supply a lanyard or shoestring to tie through your coordinate sheets so you can wear them while

rehearsing.

● If you lose your coordinate sheets, you need to print replacements on your own via Google Classroom. Do not

lose coordinate sheets!

● You must have your coordinate sheets at every rehearsal

FOOTBALL GAME MUSIC

● Brass and Woodwinds

○ Stands music to be played at football games must be kept organized in a flip folder. Student leaders will

show everybody how to organize their flip folders before the first performance.

○ All brass and woodwind players must have flip folder with all football music at every

game.

○ If you lose your flip folder or any football game music, you need to obtain another flip folder and print

the music on your own via Google Classroom. Do not lose your flip folder!

● Percussion

○ Football game music will be kept in your standard binder with sheet protectors.

○ You must have your bilder with all football music at every game.

○ If you lose your binder or any football game music, you need to obtain another binder and print the

music on your own via Google Classroom. Do not lose your music!

CHECK-OFFS

● Members will have music, visual, and drill assignments checked off by the staff or student leaders

throughout the season. Assignments vary by section and time of year. Some check-offs are completed online,

some are submitted via audio or video recording, and some are completed during rehearsal. Students will be

informed of the specific item(s) to be checked off and method of assessment in advance.

● Students who fail to complete check-offs will be suspended from performing until completed.

PIT DUTY

● Each section of the band is required to help the pit move their instruments to and from practice locations when

assigned.

● Meet the pit in the band room prior to rehearsal and follow the direction of the pit personnel who will let you

know what needs taken out.

● After rehearsal concludes, meet the pit on the field and return instruments to the band room.

● Students who fail to complete this task when assigned will be subject to disciplinary action.

STUDENT LEADERS

In the Spirit of Freedom, we have three student leadership positions:

1. Drum Majors conduct the band in performance and supervise captains.

2. Captains mentor sections and also serve as a rank leader.

3. Rank Leaders mentor 3-4 members who play a similar instrument.

Requirements

1. Any 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year member is eligible for a leadership position. Out of a band of 150 members, we will have

approximately 30-35 student leaders.

2. Brass, woodwind, and percussion student leaders must be enrolled in a band class. Colorguard leaders do not

need to be in a band class.

3. Student leaders must be able to attend 7 out of 8 summer leadership meetings unless special permission is

granted by Mr. Galway.

4. Student leaders cannot miss any part of Band Camp (or Percussion/Colorguard Camp for members of those

sections).

Responsibilities

1. Help members learn their music, marching, drill, and general procedures.

5. Check members’ progress and provide updates to the director and staff.

6. Devote extra time towards helping students who are struggling or have fallen behind.

7. Communicate with members to ensure they know where to be, when to be there, what to do, when to do it, etc.

8. Make sure students have all necessary equipment for rehearsals and performances (music, coordinate sheets,

lyres, flip folders, etc.) and ensure everything is properly cared for.

9. Ensure rehearsal areas are set up before rehearsal begins and ensure items are put away after rehearsal if

applicable.

10. Oversee organization of the storage room and other storage areas.

● The following student leadership positions will be announced on or before Friday, 5/24:

○ Drum Majors

○ Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet, Mellophone, Baritone/Euphonium, and Tuba Captains

○ Front Ensemble Captain

● The following student leadership positions will be announced after tryouts because they are dependent on how

many members we have and for percussion, what specific instrument placement is earned:

○ Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet, Mellophone, Baritone/Euphonium, and Tuba Rank Leaders. We

create ranks of 4, so for instance, if we have 12 trumpets, there would be 1 Captain and 2 Rank Leaders. 16

Baritone/Euphoniums would mean 1 Captain and 3 Rank Leaders.

○ Battery Captain and Rank Leaders

○ Front Ensemble Rank Leaders

○ Colorguard Captain(s)

SOCIAL MEDIA

Do not post negative things about the band or its members on any form of social media including, but not

limited to, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat. If you are having an issue, bring it to the attention of your student

leader, a drum major, or Mr. Galway who will help you find a constructive solution. Students who violate this rule

will be subject to disciplinary action up to and including dismissal from the organization.

UNIFORMS

Uniforms will be issued to students during Band Camp

● The uniforms will remain stored in the uniforms closet.

● Alterations will be handled by the Band Boosters parent volunteers. Do not alter your uniform yourself without

consulting Mr. Galway first.

● Students are held financially responsible for damage due to misuse or neglect.

● Black socks, FULL LENGTH, must be worn with the uniform.

● Brass and woodwind players must wear black gloves. One pair will be provided at no charge. Replacement pairs

may be purchased at $3 per pair.

● What to wear under your uniform:

○ In hot weather, wear athletic shorts and your show T-shirt

○ In cool weather, wear form-fitting pants and tops. Under Armor-type clothing is recommended. Do not

wear bulky garments that will be seen peeking out of the uniform. Never wear jeans under the uniform.

○ At the conclusion of a performance, all uniform components will be properly hung up and put away before

leaving. This will be checked by the Band Boosters Parents.

● All of the uniform or none of the uniform:

○ The uniform must be worn as a complete uniform at all times. The only exception is during the 3rd quarter

of football games or during hot weather when the students are allowed to remove the jacket. In such a

circumstance, the pants must remain over the shoulders.

○ Do not walk around with the jacket unzipped. A sloppy look will negatively affect the public’s perception

of our band.

○ Long hair must be tucked inside the hat.

○ Visible jewelry is not permitted while in uniform. The only exception is ladies are permitted to wear small

studded earrings.

○ Do not eat or drink while wearing your jacket. If you plan to visit the concession stand, you must remove

your jacket prior to eating or drinking.

○ Public displays of affection are not allowed while in uniform.

Colorguard-Specific Items

● Colorguard uniforms should be washed after every performance week. Cold water, gentle cycle. NO BLEACH.

● No jewelry of any kind can be worn with uniforms.

● For football games, colorguard Members MUST change out of the uniform after halftime to avoid spills/damage to

the uniforms while eating/drinking.

FOOTBALL GAME PROCEDURES

Your actions during the games are seen by the school, teachers, administrators, the South Riding community, and visiting

fans. You are expected to model outstanding etiquette at all times.

● All students are required to be fully dressed and ready to warm-up by the designated call time.

● Brass and woodwind players must have their lyre and flip folder for games. Percussionists must have their 3-ring

binder with pep music.

● Before the game, we will perform the Star Spangled Banner, Fight Song, and possibly other music as needed.

● When the game begins, students are expected to sit with their sections and be prepared to play pep songs at the

director’s command. Generally, we will play when our team is on defense, during timeouts, and in between the 3rd

and 4th quarters.

● Do not play your instrument unless directed to do so.

● We will perform all or part of our competition show at halftime.

● Students are given the 3rd quarter off. You may visit friends, concessions, etc. but you MAY NOT LEAVE THE

STADIUM AREA for any reason. Front ensemble and colorguard is excluded from this policy so you can return

equipment to the band room and/or change into warm-ups.

● Students must be back in the stands BEFORE THE END OF THE 3RD QUARTER. We will play at the conclusion of

the 3rd quarter. Any student not back and ready to play in time will lose the privilege the next game.

● At the end of the game, we will line up to march out.

● Students are dismissed once all uniforms and equipment are properly put away, verified by your rank leader.

COMPETITIONS AND TRAVEL

Parents are encouraged to come to competitions to support the band!

● An itinerary will be posted in the Call Sheet in advance of the event.

● We will usually practice before departing the day of a competition. After practice, students will be given time to

pack up and change into uniforms. Be prepared to move your equipment to the truck when called.

● Students will sign up for a bus prior to the event. You must ride the bus you signed up for, both there and back.

● Bus behavior expectations:

○ Keep hands and feet to yourselves.

○ Do not make a mess. Clean up after yourselves.

○ Food and drink is generally not permitted on LCPS buses. Check with the driver before eating or drinking.

○ Keep your volume to a level that does not disturb others.

○ You must sit with a seat partner and should only sit in a seat by yourself at the chaperones’ discretion.

○ Follow directions from the driver, chaperones, or parents THE FIRST TIME GIVEN. They are

volunteering their time and deserve your respect.

○ Public displays of affection are not allowed.

● At the competition site:

○ FOCUS! Know where to be, when to be there, and how to be when you get there. Move from one location

to another quickly and with a purpose.

○ Do not behave in a way that will embarrass yourself, Freedom High School, or your band director.

○ Bring money for concessions.

○ Bring warm clothes when the weather is cold.

○ We will usually stay until the end of competitions for awards.

● Upon arrival back at the school:

○ Students will be dismissed when everything is properly put away, verified by your rank leader.

○ If you are not planning on riding the bus home, a note must be provided by a parent IN ADVANCE of the

event. Students may only leave with a parent or designated family member.

PARENT VOLUNTEERS

Managing an organization as large and successful as ours required a great deal of volunteer support from parents. Parents

are expected to volunteer for at least one activity per season. Parents are an integral part of the success and growth

of our band. Volunteer opportunities include:

● Fundraising – Planning, organizing, and implementation

● Tag Day and Mattress Sale Fundraisers – Driving students

● Band Camp – Helping students with first aid and medical concerns

● Meals – Planning and organizing meals for football games and 8th grade band day

● Uniforms – Assigning, fitting, maintenance, and repair

● Chaperones and Pit Crew – Accompany the band to and from performances; help us set up prior to each

performance

● Building/Carpentry – Building carts, props, assembling new equipment, etc.

● Truck/Trailer Driving – We haul equipment in our trailer and a large rented truck for each competition. Three

drivers are needed for each competition.

● Load Crew – Assist with loading equipment onto the truck and trailer prior to each competition.

Many others will come up throughout the season

More information about volunteer opportunities will be discussed at the mandatory parent meeting during Band

Camp. An online sign-up form will be available at www.freedombandboosters.org. If your schedule prohibits you

from being able to volunteer your time, please consider making a donation to the Band Program instead.
