EstimationSignificant Figures- Start with the first non-zero number from left to right.

Try identifying the first non-zeros!

Q1. 10.25Q2. 0.0010056Q3. 1.053

Try rounding them off to 3 significant figures!- Include an extra digit for consideration.

If it is more than 5, add 1 to the previous digit. Else, drop it.

Q1. 10.25

Q2. 0.0010056

Q3. 1.053

SQUARES, SQUARE ROOTS, CUBE, CUBE ROOTSPerfect Squares are squares of whole numbers. (e.g. 1, 4, 9)

72=49

√49=7

Perfect Cubes are cubes of whole numbers. (e.g. 1, 8, 27)

Map ScalesUsually expressed in terms of 1: n, where both values are in centimeters.

1km = 1000m1m = 100cm

Example

A map is drawn to a scale of 1:50 000

(1cm on map represents 50 000cm on the actual ground)

(a) How far is it in centimeters on the map between two villages which are 2km apart?

(b) On the map, a plot of land has an area of 4 c m2 .What is the actual area in k m2 .
