Post-Exam Programme 25 – 26 May 2010

Tchoukball

After the Mid-Year exam, we carried out our Post-Exam Programme which is an integral part of our school curriculum. To develop varied interests in students, they were given a total of 25 activities to choose from. These ranged from IT, Culinary Arts, Fun Healthy Lifestyle courses etc. For this year’s Post-Exam Activities, we had the support of our partners. Out of these 25 activities, five were facilitated by the Parent Support Group and two by the School Family Education staff and our Girls’ Brigade volunteers.

“I attended the Band Jamming session. When I stepped into the room, the lead singer’s voice reverberated through my ears and I was captivated by his powerful vocal rendition of ‘Hotel California’. His voice along with the upbeat drumming of the band made me reminisce the old times when Elvis Presley was still king of rock. I left the session like I just stepped out of an 80’s rock concert.”

Japan 5 – 10 June

Overseas Trips

Mt Kinabalu 1 – 6 JuneBintan 24 – 26 MayDuring the June holidays, twenty students and six teachers went on an exciting adventure – climbing the highest mountain in Southeast Asia, Mt Kinabalu in Sabah. It was a 5-day-6-night trip. The hike to the summit started on the third day.

Everyone managed to reach Laban Rata (3273m), but some did not attempt the summit climb as they had altitude sickness. We started our climb at 0145 hrs, and reached the summit at 0545 hrs. 17 of the students finally made it to the summit (4100m).

We had a great time, getting to know one another, from the start of the training till the end. We enjoyed the trip, especially the white water rafting on Padas River. It was truly an unforgettable trip! – Jody Tay Hsing Yi (3E2)

As part of the Post-Exam programme and to fulfil the promise “One Student, One Mountain, One Country”, five classes of Secondary 3 Normal students went on a 3-day-2-night Service Learning trip to Bintan, Indonesia, and climbed Gunung Bintan (340m). Besides doing Service Learning in the local schools, the students visited a slum located within a rubbish landfill and also an orphanage.

“When I was at the local primary school, I was surprised the students were very friendly. Even though they did not know what we were saying and likewise we did not know what they were saying, yet we could play together and had lots of fun.” – Jeremy Lim (3NA9)

“As I stepped into the landfill, I could not take the smell. The place was full of flies and mosquitoes. I pitied the people because they had to live beside or even on the mounts of rubbish. I was grateful that I live in Singapore!”

– Muhammad Nabil Fikri (3NA9)

Kuala Lumpur 11 – 15 June

From 11th to 15th June 2010, 30 basketball team members, accompanied by 4 teachers and the basketball coach, Uncle Foo, went to Kuala Lumpur to pit their basketball skills with their foreign counterparts.

“We played two matches today; first, the girls, then the boys. The girls were not leading in the first and second quarter. In the third quarter, we played well, but soon the other school started to lead again. We were afraid they would win, so we put in our best to play. Finally, we drew at the last minute. But the other school got to shoot at the very last second. The score was 50 to 52. We lost by one ball! The boys played next and they won on a score of 90 to 61.”

– Sherry Low (1E4)

Eighteen students and three teachers went to Kyushu, Japan. Our main objectives throughout our stay there was to interact with the locals in Japan, understand their culture and lifestyle, as well as visit interesting sights, such as the historical Kumamoto Castle, the Atomic Bomb Museum, Glover Garden etc. Thus, we got to learn about the history and geography of the country.

Besides that, we experienced travelling on bullet trains and ferries. We even managed to visit Japan’s NHK Broadcasting company, as well as the local schools to interact with the students. We also had a home stay for a night; it was a unique experience as we got to know the people, their lifestyle and their traditional values at their own homes.

We even scripted a story and made a short movie during our trip in Japan.

– Pow Liang Wei (4E4)

National Day Celebrations 6 Aug

Teachers’ Day Celebrations 31 Aug

This year’s National Day was unlike any other. The day started with the uniformed groups on the Parade Square. The uniformed groups showed harmony as they marched in unity. They showed the pride they had in their hearts, as they stood with the Singapore flag. The participants of the parade really brought out the spirit in every one of us, which then led us to singing the National Anthem together with hearts filled with joy as we stood proudly on Singapore ground.

Of the many items presented on that day, the musical was a sensational hit among us teens. Its liveliness and creative

storyline appealed to our generation, and brought along a meaningful message. It taught us the true meaning of

friendship and loyalty towards our loved ones. What’s best was that the play which was written by our very own students

turned out to be a very huge success. Indeed, something new and enjoyable has changed our perspective of National Day celebrations

for the better.– Tessa Lin Wang (2E1)
