0 0 9 Love Makes the World Go RoundLove is the basis of our lives. It might even be the reason for our existence. To love andto knowlove is the single greatest gift we can experience. Despite our great discoveries in mathand
science, love remains a mystery to us. Yet it is something that is so complex and powerfulthat it
guides and rules our lives. Knowing true love is being in a state that is tantamount to bliss. It is asclose to heaven as we are likely to get in this life. Without it, our lives are reduced tomeaningless
drudgery, misunderstanding and emptiness. What is this mysterious thing called love? Poets,
lovers and scholars down the ages havetried to capture it, define it, to depict it and tried to
analyze it. Above all, they have sought tounderstand it. Is it a thought, a feeling or an emotionthat simply passes through us or somethingfar more substantial? Amazingly, might the force of
love be a vital energy as important as lifeitself? Could it be possible that love may even literally
make the world go around?Love is the center of our attachments. It is the objective of our lives. Our well being, health and happiness, we think, relies upon our diets, our fitness, and our wealth.
Yet none of these things mean anything without love. Love can make us glow and transform our
lives. To beunloved turns us painfully into beings without purpose and direction. Isn't it true that
love is the basic force that unites us in our families and relationships? Parents don't care for achild simply because they ought to. They care for that child because of and through love. We are
united to our siblings and our families not through duty, but through love. That same feeling
extends outwardsthrough our friends and even our neighbors. It is the force that enables us toform and live incommunities. It becomes clear very quickly thatamour
is the fabric of our society. It is the fuel, the driving force and engine, all rolled into one. Withoutit would we do one single thing for another?
Real love asks for nothing in return and wants only to give. Where there is love there isharmony
and balance in the world. Where it is absent there is misunderstanding, hatred, fear and jealousy.Look at the troubled spots in the world. Who could say that if love ruled there, thekilling, the
fighting and the hostility would not stop immediately?Unconditional love for one another has
nothing to do with sex, exploitation, or subjugation. Real love will not allow these things to
operate or function. To love unconditionallyis to be completely selfless and focus on others. Tobe unloved is to be misunderstood, to bediscarded. It is to suffer the loneliest of all fates; it is to
be less than human, utterly miserable, and disconnected from the world. Love is the force that
binds us all and drives us forward. Whenwe love to do something don't we do it with passion, with care and with enthusiasm? So muchhas been achieved in the world through love and the

passion and commitment it forges inside us.To be out of love is to be at the bottom of despair
and melancholy. Doesn't the world suffer in thesame way when love and the respect it engenders
disappear? When we hurt, destroy each other and exploit our planet, aren't we turning our backson the source of the very energy that is our world? Can you think of one conflict that would not
be resolved if love was allowed to rule?Love is being completely selfless; it is to radiate energy
so powerful that it could, if we let it,stop conflict and violence throughout the world today.Violence and hate end where love begins, they cannot exist or compete with love. Love is farstronger than hate, fear or despair. That is notwishful thinking, it is a fact. Yet, sometimes we let
love out of our lives thinking we can survivewithout it, but we are wrong. We all possess the gift
to love. That gift lies dormant in us and can be ignited at any time.Love costs nothing but itrequires courage, belief, and understanding. That understanding is this:
loving is easy, it is free.Fall in love and we have the energy to work day and night, to move
mountains. There is afountain of love energy in every person. Depression, illness, and anxietycan all be battledagainst with love. Negative thoughts can be changed into positive ones. Love is
simply the most powerful force in all our lives. We can let this force work for us or try and
repress it. You can let love into your life or pretend that it does not exist. Doing so will onlymake you the most miserable lonely figure of despair. Love, because you want to change things.
Love will alter the way you see the world andthrough that, the way the world is. Love, not
because you expect something in return. Love whatyou do. Love to learn new things, to meet and
to know others, to understand and to help. Lovemakes the world go round. It is why we are hereand what we are all looking for.

TRUE HAPPINESS
11th October 1954
It seems to have been taken for granted that by acquiring certain material resources we canraise the standard of living of human beings. Following this principle, all the countries of the
world are set upon acquiring and multiplying their resources. It is no doubt right that ahungry man cannot think of praying. Mahatma Gandhi himself once said that the hungry
man sees God only in the form of bread. But even then we should think how far this kind ofmaterial prosperity can lead to real happiness.
I have also heard that the countries, which are known to be prosperous and resourceful, are
not blessed with mental peace, whereas, on the other hand, we find lots of poor people, who excite our pity, leading a happy and contented existence. The truth is that the
source of real happiness is in one's own inner self and not in the outside world.
We equate happiness with the world of external things and that is why there is ascramble for acquisition and accumulation of things. The fact is that these things
are, at best, no more than the means to achieve happiness and not happiness
itself. One can experience happiness even without them. Apart from this, it isworthwhile considering what is real happiness.
I think real happiness or peace of mind means the complete freedom from
extraneous pressure or restraint or inhibitions. One basic fact, which must berecognized, is that any kind of inhibition or restraint is irksome. It ceases to be irksome only
when it becomes something voluntarily accepted or adopted without restraint or coercion. Itis this voluntary adoption of any line of thought or action without restraint or coercion from
outside which brings real happiness. Any subtraction from complete freedom is loss of
freedom to that extent and implies dependence on something else.
Man as a member of society or even as an individual has long ceased to be fully free, if he
ever was or can be free. All that can be aimed at or achieved is the reduction orminimization of this restraint or coercion and increasing to the maximum the freedom whichman enjoys. His material requirements can be satisfied, it is obvious, only by subjecting
himself to some curtailment of this freedom. His mental satisfaction and possibly his
spiritual aspiration becomes reduced in quantum and perhaps also in quality by the amountof material satisfaction which in the very nature of things implies restraint. What isgenerally termed progress has tended more and more to restrict man's freedom.
In every department of life and activity man has to submit more and more toexternal restraints and inhibitions.
It follows that there must be consequential and proportionate diminution in the mental
satisfaction and spiritual endeavor even though man may not feel that restraint or realizethe ever-growing restraint being put on him from day to day. It is thus clear that real
happiness lies in freedom from restraint, which in turn, implies man's capacity to carry onwith as little dependence on others as possible. We cannot escape from the conclusionthat what is generally called high standard of living has served to increase ourdependence on others and to that extent has removed us further from real
happiness.
We see in the world of today that distance between country and country has almost beeneliminated and nations living far apart from one another have come closer so that if
something happens at one place it has its repercussion far and wide. It does not hold good

with regard to only dreadful things like war but also of beneficent activities. One of the
results of this progress has been that man is now dependent for his daily necessities of life
on far off countries. An example will clarify the point. Many of us present here today haveknown the days when the railway system in India not expanded to the present extent, whenthere were no automobiles of any kind and when we had not even heard of the aeroplanes.
At that time also food was as important as it is today. Then every community depended forits food on itself and on the land, which it cultivated. True, if there was failure of a crop on
account of natural calamities like floods or drought, the community suffered. But otherwiseit managed to live on what it produced and learnt in course of time the wisdom and theprudence to save food for emergencies. On account of the improvement in the means of
transport today food grains can be easily supplied from one part of the country to another.
We saw recently that food had to be dropped by aeroplanes on areas, which were renderedinaccessible, by flood. All this sounds so nice, but we have to see whether these
developments have enhanced or restricted our freedom. My feeling is that by increasing
such needs, as he cannot fulfill himself man has necessarily restricted hisfreedom.
By giving the example of food imports, I have tried to show our dependence on other
countries. That is not all. If far off Argentina, Canada or America has a bumper wheat crop,it results in the falling of wheat prices in India. Because of the improved means of
transport, the availability or otherwise of things does not depend on localconditions but on the overall world conditions. If food cannot be imported from other
countries because of some natural calamity or as a result of the out-break of war, the needy
country will have to suffer untold misery. We saw during the last war how even people ofneutral countries had to suffer because of the restrictions on export and import of certain
articles from overseas. So, there are two aspects of this, progress. One promises plentyduring peacetime, the other threatens to release a rich harvest of sufferings and privations
in case communications are dislocated on account of hostilities.
It is necessary to remember that even if all of our requirements are satisfied, we are
bartering our freedom for that satisfaction. For instance, whenever there is disease in anepidemic form in the country, we have to depend on other countries to supply us with
medicines. Similarly, whenever there is a famine, others can save us from its dire
consequences, but at the same time, if they like, they can also starve us by withholding thesupply of food grains. If war breaks out today the belligerents need not resort to deadlyweapons in order to kill others. They can do it equally effectively by disrupting the system
of transport. Therefore, while on the one hand, we are endeavoring to raise the standard of
living; those very efforts might result in the curtailing of our freedom and independence.
In spite of this all-round progress we have not yet reached a stage when we could
produce an article in sufficient quantity so as to meet the requirements of all thepeoples of the world. When we cannot say this about food, which tops the list of man'sneeds, it is no use talking about other things which are produced in still lesser quantities.
That is why the standard of living of all the countries is not uniformly high and presents anunpleasant contrast. Those who possess more are anxious to extort more and more fromthose who do not possess much. The result is naturally conflict between man and man and
country and country. The fear of this conflict has become a nightmare for the modern man.
It is, therefore, necessary to realize that what we have assumed as axiomatic truth, namely, that increase in material prosperity also means the attainment of happiness, is neither quite
correct nor so self-evident. This assumption is true only up to a certain limit and the morewe transgress this limit the more remote become our chances of being happy. This limit has
-

to be fixed by man himself. This is undoubtedly beset with countless difficulties, but I do
think that it is not altogether impossible for man to achieve happiness without the
usual paraphernalia, which passes for his everyday necessities. This is exactlywhat is meant by the adage, 'simple living and high thinking'. It was by practising
this truth that Mahatma Gandhi could enjoy that happiness which a humblefollower of his is unable to have even in the palatial Rashtrapati Bhavan.
I do not suggest that ambition or high aspirations or desire for progress should be
discouraged. But let us be sure that our will to progress and rise high willmaterialize in the true sense only after we have realized that the source of our
happiness does not lie outside us but is enshrined within our own hearts. Our
happiness will vary directly in proportion to the degree of our faith in the abovetruth. The more we try to achieve happiness, basing it on the outside world, themore we shall be inviting conflicts and depriving others of their happiness.
What is Happiness?
In the ancient world back, many philosophers such as Epicures and Stoics were trying to reach and
achieve happiness in many different ways. In today's world, many people are trying to reach and achievehappiness via many ways that depend on the personal perspective of people. I am going to discuses
about how to find the true happiness and about how people describe their inner conditions in many
special ways. Although some people describe the word happiness according to their personal
perspective, true happiness does not depend on things that are around because it is within everyone.
The term happiness is a state of mind or the personal feelings characterized by pleasure, delight, love,
contentment, enjoyment, joy, satisfaction and entertainment all together. People always want to achieve
and find happiness in their life, so they can be happy. Some people have different ideas describing their
inner feelings. Also, some people have unique ideas about how to find happiness.
The first important point is that the term happiness can be described by an individual according to his or
her personal perspective. What makes you happy and what makes me happy are different things.
Individuals depict their inner emotions in a different way that you cannot compare with each other, so
there might be a lot of definitions. For example, some people think that when they move to anotherhouse, things will be better, some people think that when they have enough money, everything will be
astonishing, some people think that when they change their jobs, they will be happier, and some people
think that they can be happy when they get a lot of friends. As a result, happiness can be portrayed in
many different ways by people according to their personal point of view.
The second significant point is that individuals or people in general should not run for it because it is
already within everyone. True happiness lies within each of us, and true happiness does not depend on
the things that are around us. True happiness is not through getting or having. Things around us such as
getting or having a lot of money do not give us the real happiness that people need because having a lot
of money is something temporary, and money causes greed. For example, if a person has about
$100.000, he will always try not to decrease the amount of money, and he will be so sad when he has lost
a bit. Also, money is a temporary thing that sometimes people have and sometimes people do not, so itwould be better if you do not considered the money as an important thing in your life.
In conclusion, our life has many meaningful things, and there are many people who are interested to be
happy. Every one expresses his personal condition in a different way that you should not compare with
another. Also, individuals should not run or search for happiness because it is already within everyone.

Life is beautiful but not always easy, it has problems, too, and the challenge lies in facing them with courage, letting
the beauty of life act like a balm, which makes the pain bearable, during trying times, by providing hope
Happiness, sorrow, victory, defeat, day-night are the two sides of the me coin. Similarly life is full of moments of joy,
pleasure, success and comfort punctuated by misery, defeat, failures and problems. There is no human being on
Earth, strong, powerful, wise or rich, who has not experienced, struggle, suffering or failure.
No doubt, life is beautiful and every moment a celebration of being alive, but one should be always ready to face
adversity and challenges. A person who has not encountered difficulties in life can never achieve success.
Difficulties test the courage, patience, perseverance and true character of a human being. Adversity and hardships
make a person strong and ready to face the challenges of life with equanimity. There is no doubt that there can be no
gain without pain. It is only when one toils and sweats it out that success is nourished and sustained.
Thus, life is and should not be just a bed of roses; thorns are also a part of it and should be accepted by us just as we
accept the beautiful side of life.
The thorns remind one of how success and happiness can be evasive and thus not to feel disappointed and
disheartened rather remember that the pain of thorns is short-lived, and the beauty of life would soon overcome the
prick of thorns.
Those, who are under the impression that life is a bed of roses are disillusioned soon and become victims of
depression and frustration. One who faces difficulties with courage and accepts success without letting it go to its
head is the one who experience real happiness, contentment and peace in life.
Those, who think, that good times last forever, easily succumb to pressure during difficulties. They do not put in
required hard work and efforts because they break down easily.
You can take the example of a student, who burns the mid night oil, makes sacrifices and resists temptations so that
he can perform well. Similarly, a successful executive has to face the ups and downs of life, not forgetting that life is a
mix of success and failure, joy and sorrow.
If he loses hope during difficult times, he would not achieve success and would be replaced by others. Even the
strongest Kings and Emperors have had their cup of woes.
Life has not been a bed of roses for them. The adage Uneasy lays the head that wears the crown has been rightly
used for people, who are successful and are enjoying power and authority.
To sum up, life is beautiful just as roses but it has challenges which are like thorns and have to be faced and
overcome by all. Those, who accept these, challenges and succeed, are the ones, who know how to live life in its true
sense. Thus, enjoy life but also be prepared to bear the pricks of pain.
