1 Application and scope

1.1 APPLICATIONHardieFlex™SheetismanufacturedinNewZealandbyJamesHardiefromfibrecementwhichisacompositionofPortlandcement,groundsand,cellulosefibreandwater.HardieFlexSheetisapaneledlightweightwallcladdingsolutionforresidentialandlightcommercialbuildings.

• HardieFlexSheetisidealformanygeneralbuildingpurposessuchaswallcladding,widesoffits,porchesandgableendsetc.

• HardieFlexSheetisanaturalunsandedsheetandissuitableforapaintfinish.Avarietyofjointingmethodscanbeusedtoachievethedesiredlook.

1.2 SCOPEThescopeofthisspecificationisfortheuseofHardieFlexSheetlimitedtobuildingswhichfallwithinthescopelimitationsofNewZealandBuildingCode(NZBC)AcceptableSolution‘E2/AS1’paragraph1.1.ThismanualcoverstheuseofHardieFlexSheetforeitherconstructionmethodsi.e.directfixedorcavity,usedinexternalwallsoftimberframedbuildings.Pleasereferto‘E2/AS1’forfurtherinformationregardingtheselectionofconstructionmethodsforcladdings.

Thisdocumentisintendedforusebyarchitects,designersandspecifierswhomaybeinvolvedwiththespecificationofHardieFlexSheet.

2 Design

2.1 COMPLIANCEHardieFlexSheetcomplieswithsection9.7.2of‘E2/AS1’.InformationcontainedinthisdocumentisalignedwiththerequirementsofNZBCAcceptableSolution‘E2/AS1’.

2.2 RESPONSIBILITYThespecifierorotherpartyresponsiblefortheprojectmustrunthroughariskmatrixanalysistodeterminewhichconstructionmethodistobeused.Thedesignermustalsoensurethatthefigurespublishedinthisspecificationareappropriatefortheintendedapplicationandthatadditionaldetailingisperformedforspecificdesignoranyareasthatfalloutsidethescopeofthisspecification.ThedesignersshouldensurethattheintentoftheirdesignmeetstherequirementsoftheNZBC.

Alldimensionsshownareinmillimetersunlessnotedotherwise.AllNewZealandStandardsreferenceinthismanualarecurrenteditionandmustbecompliedwith.

JamesHardieconductsstringentqualitycheckstoensurethatanyproductmanufacturedfallswithinourqualityspectrum.Itistheresponsibilityofthebuildertoensurethattheproductmeetsaestheticrequirementsbeforeinstallation.JamesHardiewillnotberesponsibleforrectifyingobviousaestheticsurfacevariationsfollowinginstallation.

2.3 SITE AND FOUNDATIONThesiteonwhichthebuildingissituatedmustcomplywithNZBCAcceptableSolutionE1/AS1‘SurfaceWater’.FoundationsdesignmustcomplywiththerequirementsofNZS3604‘TimberFramedBuildings’orbeasperspecificengineeringdesign.ThegradeofadjacentfinishedgroundmustslopeawayfromthebuildingtoavoidanypossibilityofwateraccumulationinaccordancewithNZBCrequirements.

2.4 GROUND CLEARANCESTheclearancebetweenthebottomedgeofcladdingandpaved/unpavedgroundmustcomplywithsection9.1.3ofE2/AS1.Thefinishedfloorlevelmustalsocomplywiththeserequirements.Theseclearancesmustbemaintainedthroughoutthelifeofthebuilding.

HardieFlexSheetsmustoverhangthebottomplateonaconcreteslabbyaminimumof50mmasrequiredbyNZS3604.

HardieFlexSheetsmusthaveaminimumclearanceof100mmfrompavedgroundand175mmfromunpavedground.

Ontheroofsanddeckstheminimumclearancemustbe50mm.

Donotinstallexternalcladdingsuchthatitmayremainincontactwithwaterorground.RefertoFigures3and22.

2.5 MOISTURE MANAGEMENTItistheresponsibilityofthespecifiertoidentifymoisturerelatedrisksassociatedwithanyparticularbuildingdesign.Wallconstructiondesignmusteffectivelymanagemoisture,consideringboththeinteriorandexteriorenvironmentsofthebuilding,particularlyinbuildingsthathaveahigherriskofwinddrivenrainpenetrationorthatareartificiallyheatedorcooled.

WallsshallincludethoseprovisionsasrequiredbytheNZBCAcceptableSolution‘E2/AS1’‘ExternalMoisture’.Inadditionallwallopenings,penetrations,junctions,connections,windowsills,headsandjambsmustincorporateappropriateflashingsforwaterproofing.Theothermaterials,componentsandinstallationmethodsusedtomanagemoistureinexternalwalls,mustcomplywiththerequirementsofrelevantstandardsandtheNZBC.ForfurtherinformationondesigningforweathertightnessrefertoBRANZLtdandtheDepartmentofBuildingandHousingupdatesonthefollowingwebsitesrespectively,www.branz.co.nzandwww.dbh.govt.nz.

2.6 STRUCTURETimber-framedbuildingsmustbedesignedinaccordancewithNZS3604(TimberFramedBuildings).Whentheframingisprovidedasperthespecificengineeringdesign,theframingstiffnessmustbeequivalenttoormorethanthestiffnessrequirementsofNZS3604.

2.7 WIND LOADINGHardieFlexSheetcladdingaresuitableforuseinallNewZealandwindzonesuptoandincludingEHasdefinedinNZS3604.Aspecificdesignisrequiredforallsituationswherethebuildingsfallinaspecificengineeringdesign(SED)windzone.

2.8 STRUCTURAL BRACINGHardieFlexSheetcanbeusedtoachievestructuralbracingrequiredfortimberframedbuildingsdesignedandconstructedinaccordancewithNZS3604.TheHardieFlexSheetmustbeinstalledasperspecificbracingsystemdetailsthatareavailableseparately.HardieFlexSheetbracingsystemshavebeenindependentlytestedandassessedbyBRANZandaresuitableforbothconstructionmethodsi.e.directfixandcavity.RefertoJamesHardieBracingDesignManualfordetails.

2.9 FIRE RATED WALLSHardieFlexSheetcladwallsusingdirectfixorcavityconstructionmethodcanachievefireratingsupto60/60/60whenthewallsareconstructedinaccordancewiththisliteratureandincludethefireratedsystemrequirementsasspecifiedinJamesHardie‘FireandAcoustic’DesignManual.Referto‘FireandAcoustic’DesignManualforfurtherinformationaboutfireratedsystems.

2.10 ENERGY EFFICIENCYExternalwallsconstructedusingHardieFlexSheet,bulkinsulation,wheretheareaofglazingis30%orlessofthetotalwallareaandconstructedasperthistechnicalspecificationcomplieswiththerequirementsforwallsinNZBCAcceptableSolutionH1/AS1(NZBCClauseH1EnergyEfficiency),ReplacementTable1.Tomeetthermalinsulationrequirementsfortheconstruction,thebulkinsulationasspecifiedinTable1mustbeused.ThisinsulationmaybesubstitutedwithinsulationshavinghigherR-values.Thethermalinsulationofawallgetsaffectedwhenthedepthofthetimberframingisincreasedordecreased.ThecalculationusedinTable1isbasedonatimberframingsize90x45mmandusinganinternalliningmaterialsuchasJamesHardieVillaboard®Liningora10mmplasterboard.

3 Framing

3.6 TOLERANCESInordertoachieveanacceptablewallfinish,itisimperativethatframingisstraightandtrue.

FramingtolerancesmustcomplywiththerequirementsofNZS3604.Allframingshallbemadeflush.

3.7 CURVED WALLSHardieFlexSheetcanbeusedinacurvedapplication.RefertoJamesHardietechnicalsupportforfurtherinformation.

4 Preparation4.1 BUILDING UNDERLAY/HOMERAB®

PRECLAD™ LININGBuildingunderlayorHomeRAB®PreClad™LiningmustbeprovidedaspertherequirementsofNZBCAcceptableSolutionE2/AS1‘ExternalMoisture’andNZS3604.ThebuildingunderlaymustcomplywithTable23ofE2/AS1andAS/NZS4200.1.ThebuildingunderlaymustbefixedinaccordancewithE2/AS1,NZS3604andAS/NZS4200.2‘PliableBuildingMembranesandUnderlay–Installation’standardandtheunderlaymanufacturer’srecommendations.

Wallswhicharenotlinedontheinsidefacee.g.garagewallsorgableendsmustincludearigidsheathingoranairbarrierbehindthecladdingwhichcomplieswiththerequirementsofNZBCAcceptableSolutionE2/AS1Table23.HomeRABPreCladLiningissuitableforuseintheseapplications.ItmustbeinstalledinaccordancewithJamesHardieRigidAirBarriersInstallationManual.

4.2 RIGID AIR BARRIERForEHwindzonesRAB®Boardmustbeusedinlieuofbuildingunderlays.RefertoJamesHardieRigidAirBarriersInstallationManualforinformationregardinginstallation.

4.3 VENT STRIPTheJamesHardieuPVCcavityventstripmustbeinstalledatthebottomofallwallsconstructedusingthedrainedandventilatedcavityconstructionmethod.Itisimportantthattheopeningsintheventstriparekeptclearandunobstructedtoallowfreedrainageandventilationofcavities.JamesHardieuPVCventstriphasanopeningareaof1000mm2/mlength.

4.4 CAVITY BATTENSBuildingswithariskscoreof7-20calculatedinaccordancewithNZBCAcceptableSolution‘E2/AS1’Table3,requireHardieFlexSheettobeinstalledonacavity.

Thecavitybattensprovideairspacebetweentheframeandthesheetandareconsidereda‘packer’onlyinthisspecification.

3.1 GENERALThisHardieFlexSheettechnicalspecificationisonlysuitablefortimber-framedbuildings.Otherframingmaterialsoutsidethescopeofthisspecification.

3.2 DIMENSIONSA45mm(nominal)minimumstudwidthisrequiredatallsheetedges.Elsewherea35mmwidestudmaybeused.

3.3 TIMBER GRADEMinimumtimbergraderequirementsareNo.1FraminggradeasperNZS3631‘NewZealandTimberGradingRules’orequivalent.

3.4 DURABILITYTheexternalframingmustbetreatedtoaminimumH1.2treatment.RefertoNZBCAcceptableSolutionB2/AS1‘Durability’forfurtherinformationaboutthedurabilityrequirements.

FortimbertreatmentandallowablemoisturecontentinformationrefertoNZS3602(TimberandWood-BasedProductsforuseinBuildings)andNZS3640(ChemicalPreservationofRoundSawnTimber)forminimumtimbertreatmentselectionandtreatmentrequirements.Alsorefertoframingmanufacturer’sliteratureforfurtherguidanceontimberselection.Framingmustbeprotectedfrommoistureatsitesinaccordancewiththerecommendationsoftheframingmanufacturer.

4.5 FLASHINGSAllwallopenings,penetrations,intersections,connections,windowsills,headsandjambsmustbeflashedpriortosheetinstallation.PleaserefertomoisturemanagementrequirementsinClause2.5.

Thebuildingunderlaymustbeappropriatelyincorporatedwithpenetrationandjunctionflashings.Materialsmustbelappedinsuchawaythatwatertracksdowntotheexterioronthefaceofbuildingunderlay.JamesHardiewillassumenoresponsibilityforwaterinfiltrationwithinthewallduetopoorinstallationofflashingsorbuildingunderlays.TheselectedflashingmaterialsmustcomplywiththedurabilityrequirementsoftheNZBCAcceptableSolution‘E2/AS1’.

5 Fixing HardieFlex Sheet

5.1 GENERALHardieFlexSheetsmustbekeptdryandundercoverwhilstinstorageorduringinstallation.FramingmoisturecontentsmustnotexceedthemaximumlimitspecifiedinNZS3602priortosheetinstallation.Everyendeavourmustbemadetokeepframingdryoncesheetfixingcommences.

Allsheetedgesmustbesealedpriortoinstallation.Thesheetedgesmustalsobesealedaroundwindow/dooropeningsandotherpenetrationse.g.meterboxesetc.

5.2 FASTENER DURABILITYFastenersmustmeettheminimumdurabilityrequirementsoftheNZBC.NZS3604specifiestherequirementsforfixingmaterialtobeusedinrelationtoexposureconditionsandaresummarisedinTable2.

7 Finishing

7.1 PREPARATIONPaintingofHardieFlexSheetsisrequiredinordertomeetthedurabilityrequirementsoftheNZBCandproductwarranties.HardieFlexSheetsmustbedryandfreefromdirtbeforepainting.Coatingmustbecompletedwithin3monthsofsheetinstallation.

WhenusinguPVCflashings,thelightreflectivevalueofthecolourusedmustbemorethan40%asrequiredunder‘E2/AS1’.Darkcolourscauseexcessivemovementanddeterioratethecladdingperformance.

Product WarrantyOctober 2013JamesHardieNewZealand(“JamesHardie”)warrantsforaperiodof15yearsfromthedateofpurchasethattheHardieFlex™Sheet(the“Product”),willbefreefromdefectsduetodefectivefactoryworkmanshipormaterialsand,subjecttocompliancewiththeconditionsbelow,willberesistanttocracking,rotting,fireanddamagefromtermiteattackstotheextentsetoutinJamesHardie’srelevantpublishedliteraturecurrentatthetimeofinstallation.JamesHardiewarrantsforaperiodof15yearsfromthedateofpurchasethattheaccessoriessuppliedbyJamesHardiewillbefreefromdefectsduetodefectivefactoryworkmanshipormaterials.

NothinginthisdocumentshallexcludeormodifyanylegalrightsacustomermayhaveundertheConsumerGuaranteesActorotherwisewhichcannotbeexcludedormodifiedatlaw.

CONDITIONS OF WARRANTY: Thewarrantyisstrictlysubjecttothefollowingconditions:

a) JamesHardiewillnotbeliableforbreachofwarrantyunlesstheclaimantprovidesproofofpurchaseandmakesawrittenclaimeitherwithin30daysafterthedefectwouldhavebecomereasonablyapparentor,ifthedefectwasreasonablyapparentpriortoinstallation,thentheclaimmustbemadepriortoinstallation.

b) Thiswarrantyisnottransferable.

c) TheProductmustbeinstalledandmaintainedstrictlyinaccordancewiththerelevantJamesHardieliteraturecurrentatthetimeofinstallationandmustbeinstalledinconjunctionwiththecomponentsorproductsspecifiedintheliterature.Further,allotherproducts,includingcoatingandjointingsystems,appliedtoorusedinconjunctionwiththeProductmustbeappliedorinstalledandmaintainedstrictlyinaccordancewiththerelevantmanufacturer’sinstructionsandgoodtradepractice.

d) TheprojectmustbedesignedandconstructedinstrictcompliancewithallrelevantprovisionsofthecurrentNewZealandBuildingCode(“NZBC”),regulationsandstandards.

e) Theclaimant’ssoleremedyforbreachofwarrantyis(atJamesHardie’soption)thatJamesHardiewilleithersupplyreplacementproduct,rectifytheaffectedproductorpayforthecostofthereplacementorrectificationoftheaffectedproduct.

f) JamesHardiewillnotbeliableforanylossesordamages(whetherdirectorindirect)includingpropertydamageorpersonalinjury,consequentialloss,economiclossorlossofprofits,arisingincontractornegligenceorhowsoeverarising.WithoutlimitingtheforegoingJamesHardiewillnotbeliableforanyclaims,damagesordefectsarisingfromorinanywayattributabletopoorworkmanship,poordesignordetailing,settlementorstructuralmovementand/ormovementofmaterialstowhichtheProductisattached,incorrectdesignofthestructure,actsofGodincludingbutnotlimitedtoearthquakes,cyclones,floodsorothersevereweatherconditionsorunusualclimaticconditions,efflorescenceorperformanceofpaint/coatingsappliedtotheProduct,normalwearandtear,growthofmould,mildew,fungi,bacteria,oranyorganismonanyProductsurfaceorProduct(whetherontheexposedorunexposedsurfaces).

g) Allwarranties,conditions,liabilitiesandobligationsotherthanthosespecifiedinthiswarrantyareexcludedtothefullestextentallowedbylaw.

h) Ifmeetingaclaimunderthiswarrantyinvolvesre-coatingofProducts,theremaybeslightcolourdifferencesbetweentheoriginalandreplacementProductsduetotheeffectsofweatheringandvariationsinmaterialsovertime.
