N Suitable for use in northern England and Scotland

The most significant opportunities ahead lie with the shift in the way growers will be paid for land management activity. ‘Natural Capital’ and ‘Public Money for Public Goods’ are key phrases introduced in both the DEFRA 25 year Environment Plan and the Agriculture Bill. These terms signal a clear change in direction and will have increasing importance as we move through the transitional period to a life outside the European Union.

Times of change bring the need for clear guidance and industry leading expertise. Added to this, innovative services and seed products are essential to optimise the opportunities available now and in the future. Our approach to supporting your land management activity is unique, bringing together digital technology alongside seed products of the highest quality.

Innovation key to future success To make sure we remain at the forefront of innovation, we continue to invest in our 3D thinking trials programme. With a diverse network of activity across the UK ranging from formal replicated trials to on farm demonstration, our products and services are exhaustively tried and tested before being brought to market.

Delivering innovation

Discovery, Development and Demonstration are the key elements of our 3D programme. Working with seed breeders, crop protection product and machinery manufacturers, 3D thinking brings the newest products and management techniques to you.

A network of sites from the north of Scotland to the south of England enables us to thoroughly test and analyse new concepts across a range of landscapes, soil types and farming systems.

This network now includes five ‘Soil Life’ best practice sites, where we are undertaking a range of trials to improve soil structure and quality within a working farm rotation.

Our 3D Thinking Open Days provide the perfect opportunity for you to come and see the innovation first hand and meet our experts across the UK.

Independent TrialsAs well as our own in-house work, we collaborate with a wide range of research partners to support academic assessment of new crops along with cutting edge research. A key project which concluded in 2018 was our 3 year green cover trial with The James Hutton Institute in Dundee. This focussed on replicated plots of a range of green cover crops and fallow land followed by 3 consecutive crops of spring barley.

This ground breaking work has provided invaluable insight into the benefits of green cover crops on soil/water quality, biodiversity, soil resilience and spring

barley yield improvement. This provides a unique platform to deliver scientifically backed advice to growers across the UK, helping to support decision making in this fast paced sector.

Farm DemonstrationBringing all this to life on working farms across the UK is critical. We use our demonstration sites for testing and evaluation in ‘real life’ situations.

Working with independent organisations such as the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust’s Loddington, Auchnerran and Balgonie demonstration farms helps us to continue influencing at all levels from Government advisors deciding future policy through to growers planning their own requirements.

Our Integrated OfferWorking with our colleagues across Frontier, we advise on and supply a wide range of crop inputs to ensure your crops perform at their best. This includes:

• Soil tests and analysis

• Crop nutrition

• Crop protection products

• Foliar feeds

Natural Capital Overview

4

Natural Capital OverviewWhat is Natural Capital? It is defined by DEFRA as the resources around us in terms of water, air, trees, soil, energy, wood and biodiversity. Whilst these elements have always been present, Government policy is moving towards rewarding growers for looking after Natural Capital as well as producing food in a sustainable manner.

Why the change in focus? In the new era outside the European Union, the UK government is in a position to review the way farmers and land owners are paid for managing their land. This is seeing a shift from payments via the Common Agricultural Policy to rewarding farmers for producing food and managing the environment.

What is likely to happen next? The focus on delivering good agricultural practice in terms of reducing diffuse pollution, emissions and encouraging best practice with soils etc will be strong. Delivering good outcomes for farmland birds, pollinators and the wider farmed environment has the potential to be rewarded with payments. In basic terms soil, water, biodiversity, society and carbon storage will all become farm assets in the same way growers currently value machinery, land, buildings and staff.

Will there be agri-environment schemes going forward?Being paid for delivering more will be a key focus so expect to see more of a ‘payment by results’ emphasis from stewardship schemes in the future.

Paying growers in terms of the environmental outcomes is already being trialled in England with the Results Based Agrienvironment Payment Scheme (RBAPs). In addition the interest in a collaborative approach to delivering good environmental outcomes on a landscape scale are likely to continue in the form of Facilitation Funding (commonly known as Cluster Farms).

What should I be doing to prepare for/benefit from this?Begin to recognise what Natural Capital looks like on the land you manage or are involved in. Farmland birds, pollinators, improved soil management and wider rotations can all contribute to your Natural Capital. Record your current assets to give you a benchmark and then develop a plan to invest and improve on your Natural Capital returns.

How do I do this? Firstly take good advice from your trusted advisor to work out a Natural Capital business plan. Utilise key tools such as iSoyl Scout and other digital tools like MySoyl which records soil, yield, biomass and other essential data. This can then help you decide which parts of the farm to use for food production and which for the environment. In this way you can farm all your land effectively to deliver sustainable revenues whilst improving your natural capital assets at the same time.

How can Kings help?We have the expertise and understanding across the whole farm business to help you achieve multi-functional benefits from your options. For example, an EFA fallow wild bird seed mix meets your Basic Payment requirements but can also benefit farmland birds and integrate with your sporting interests.

We can provide the digital tools to support business decisions as well as help with mapping, plot measuring etc - all a lot simpler and more efficient than numerous photocopies and sketch plans on paper!

iSoyl Scout - a unique tool that enables you to measure/map plots and record habitat features

with commentary and photographs.

Making a difference with our partners

Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust Demonstration FarmsWorking across three of the GWCT’s demonstration farms, we support the implementation of cutting edge habitat creation and management.

Our partnership with the GWCT’s Allerton Project at Loddington continues to

flourish, covering green cover crops, stewardship options and game crops. Heavy soils and the extreme heat and dry weather of the summer of 2018 tested our robust habitat system to the maximum. A combination of spring and autumn sown wild bird seed mixtures in year one and two, perennials and wildflower/nectar flower plots all created a valuable mosaic of habitat. We are also evaluating dedicated wild bird seed mixtures developed for the Interreg PARTRIDGE project.

At Auchnerran, Aberdeenshire we have been establishing wild bird seed

mixtures for two years now. This has been difficult in the past due to the large population of rabbits and the soil’s highly acidic nature. With plenty of work by the farm team to reduce the significant rabbit population, and our ongoing agronomy guidance, progress is being made. Previously tired soils are improving whilst seed mixtures with full agronomy plans to control a host of weeds are boosting fortunes for farmland birds across this hill fringe farm.

SyngentaNow into its seventh year, the collaboration between Kings and Syngenta continues to develop as more pollinator, wild bird and soil improving features are created across the UK.

The Syngenta Operation Pollinator range combines the Annual Wild Flower Mix, designed to boost pollinator food sources in April/ May alongside the Bees ‘n’ Seeds wild bird seed mix, covering all bases for farmland birds and pollinators. Soil and water is looked after through the Green Headland Mix which comprises a range of key green cover species designed to intercept nutrients and soil particles, protecting watercourses.

The partnership provides a best practice model for growers through the technical support and delivery of key features clearly aligned to the Natural Capital strategies being delivered by Government now and going forward.

Gamekeepers Welfare Trust

Over the last two years, our support of the GWT has contributed £2,490 towards the care

and support of game and countryside managers from school leavers to the elderly.

We donate £1 from each pack of our Wildlife Winter Holding Cover sold to the Gamekeepers Welfare Trust. Kings is delighted to confirm that this initiative will be repeated for the third year in 2019. Not only can you improve the fortunes of game and farmland birds by planting the mix but also make a positive contribution to those in need of a helping hand. For details of the mix see page 13.

Balgonie, Fife is one of the GWCT’s Interreg PARTRIDGE grey partridge project sites. We have been working closely with Dr Dave Parish

on designing the most appropriate wild bird seed mixture to suit the land and the needs of grey partridges throughout the year. The mixture has been tailored to the Scottish climate and contains annuals, biennials and perennials. 2018 was the first year for this bespoke mixture and, despite an extremely dry summer, the crops have established exceptionally well providing pollen and nectar over summer followed by abundant feed value over winter.

Opportunities to improve the farmed environment as well as looking after soils and protecting water can be effectively supported through Ecological Focus Area compliance and voluntary application to agri-environment schemes.

Ecological Focus AreasA simple initiative to introduce habitats and look after soils through key options as highlighted below.

Countryside StewardshipGreat progress was made in 2018 with the introduction of the Simplified offer to run alongside Mid Tier and Higher Tier levels of agreement. Many growers have benefitted to date with excellent agreements delivering for pollinators, farmland birds, woodland, soils and water. It is essential that agreements are carefully collated to get the best outcomes

for the farm business and the wider farmed environment. Our team of advisors can offer simple guidance from option selection through to providing full scheme applications on behalf of growers. The key message is if you are not currently in a scheme and are waiting to see what comes, you should get on the agri-environment bus now!

Conservation Crops Case StudyFarm manager, Richard Ward, has worked with Kings technical advisor, Neil Harris, since 2016 to enhance the natural environment at Home Farm.

While Richard’s commitment to improving the farm’s natural features was always clear, initially he wasn’t sure on the best way to make it happen. In particular he had always felt very hesitant towards Countryside Stewardship, deterred by the complicated administration and application process often associated with the scheme. Thankfully, with expert guidance from Neil, Richard needn’t have worried.

Taking responsibility for mapping the farm and its features ahead of drawing up plans for implementing stewardship options, Neil was able to compile a substantial application.

All Richard needed to do was sign the dotted line.

Following acceptance onto the scheme, Neil and Richard worked closely to make the most of unproductive land by replacing it with a variety of stewardship options to help the local environment, wildlife and contribute to the farm’s bottom line. As well as enhancing biodiversity and providing beautiful spaces that benefit the local community, taking advantage of the opportunities available with Countryside Stewardship has given Richard valuable experience. Now, he is in a much better position to benefit from the new environmental payment regimes of the future.

Visit the Kings website for more detail about the work at Home Farm.

For Farmland Birds

Providing the best wild bird seed mixtures for farmland birds is critical.

Implemented alongside wild bird seed options, supplementary feeding sees the combination of wheat and oilseed rape fed with small seeds such as sunflower hearts and millet. To support agreement holders with these options, we provide the following.

• Seed mixtures or straights of the highest quality to meet agreement needs. These can be supplied as a whole mix or as a pre-mix to go with home saved cereals/oilseeds. Available in 25kg or bulk bags to meet your requirements.

• Weatherproof supplementary feeding diaries to help ensure compliance, with entry pages for a feeding ‘year’ and a handy farmland bird identification page.

• Perdix feed buckets – whilst most food needs to be ground-fed, these vermin-proof buckets are ideal for key locations where a targeted approach is required. Buckets can be mounted out of reach of game birds. We offer an automated feed bucket to save time and effort.

For Game Birds

Holding game birds from summer through to the end of a shoot season can be challenging. To help hold partridges and pheasants where and when they are needed, Kings has created two special holding mixtures. Fed on the ground or in hoppers, these mixtures have been formulated to provide superior nutritional content and entertainment for game birds.

Kibbled maize, with or without aniseed, is also available.

Seed is available in bulk bags and 20-25kg bags, both at competitive prices and mixes can be adapted to suit individual needs.

Game Cover Case StudyA recovery project to help revive the grey partridge population has seen Blankney Estates receive the Jas Martin & Co Lincolnshire grey partridge award for conservation management. Comprising a host of well-integrated stewardship options with the help of Kings technical advisor, Meehal Grint, the Estate is a great example of how to strike a commercial and environmental balance within a large-scale farm business.

The aim of commercial director, Tim Harper, is to put the same amount of effort into mitigating the business’ environmental impact and protecting local wildlife as they do their commercial operations. While grey partridge counts have been recorded since 2009, numbers have increased considerably in more recent years following the extensive conservation work. With support from Meehal, tailored mixtures have been incorporated to promote good nesting cover and valuable winter feed – crucial for ensuring the birds make it through to the breeding season.

Through the implementation of bespoke, well thought-out game cover and conservation crops, the Estate is seeing clear evidence of a growing grey partridge and farmland bird population. The business is also mitigating the effects of intensive agricultural practices, making the farmed environment more resilient for the future.

Visit the Kings website for more detail about the conservation projects at Blankney Estates.

Gaining the right advice and using the most appropriate seed products to get the best outcome from your game cover crops is critical. These crops are the key to success in holding game and presenting them on shoot days – furthermore we are increasingly seeing this core requirement having to be integrated into Ecological Focus Area and stewardship agreement requirements. The Kings team will support you through the process, ensuring you get the results you need.

Poacher Maize and Second Year Coleor Kale

Lee’s advice . . .

Maize needs targeted nutrition to ensure successful canopy and cob development. Use a combination of

seedbed fertiliser at drilling and foliar feeds as the crop develops to get

the best results.

Kings Maize

Maize continues to be the first choice game crop for those looking for an all round feed and cover provider. The exceptional heat seen in the summer of 2018 resulted in mixed results in terms of performance. Where Poacher Maize with Synergy was used many reported that despite the challenging conditions the crops came through the summer and performed well.

Where you wish to broaden your cover options you may consider planting Campaign Mix South or Poacher Millet Mix either alongside or oversown within the maize crop itself. Such a method will improve your game holding capacity and also look after farmland birds through the winter months.

It is important to recognise that 2019 will be the final year in which both Mesurol and Sonido seed treatments will be available. With this in mind, stock of treated seed will be limited so please ensure you place your order in good time to secure your requirements.

We continue to include the FAO (maturity rating) number for each maize product in order to help you choose the variety most suited to your needs. The higher the FAO number, the later the maturity date.

Synergy – our market leading treatmentKings’ exclusive and unique maize seed treatment, Synergy, continues to be a great success in helping the maize crop through the critical early establishment period.

KALE

Kings Kale Blend

Despite the extreme weather conditions seen through the late spring and summer of 2018, we have seen many excellent crops planted both as straights and within mixtures. Those that were planted from mid-summer onwards kept their heads down until the weather broke in the late summer and have since flourished. These crops will make excellent second year stands that will deliver super habitat for game and farmland birds alike.

As we enter a new era without flea beetle treatments on kale seed, it becomes even more important to put careful plans in place to ensure kale crops are a success. The Kings team has extensive experience with regard to plot preparation, drilling techniques, nutrition strategies and agronomy plans that can all come together to give you the best opportunity to successfully establish kale crops. Don’t forget that time invested in the first year with kale can often bring rewards of two or, in some instances, three year crops!

All Kings kale varieties are supplied with our exclusive Synergy seed

treatment as standard.

Paul’s advice . . .

Kale needs ongoing attention to ensure success regardless if it is planted as a

straight crop or within a mixture. Be vigilant for flea beetle, slug and

pigeon damage and be ready to address promptly.

K42e Kings Sorghum Mix • A blend of dwarf and intermediate height sorghum varieties

• An excellent option in the South of England where deer, badgers, rats or corvids have created problems with maize crops.

25kg/ha 12.5kg pack - £52.00

K42b Kings Milo • A robust cover crop that performed very well due to the hot summer of 2018

• Great for flushing cover or use as a wind break along the edge of plots.

25kg/ha 12.5kg pack - £50.00

2018 was the perfect year for sorghum growing! Warm seedbeds ensured prompt establishment and the constant heat ensured that the majority of crops thrived. The resulting winter hardy cover stood well through the winter. Understandably interest in this crop is increasing but do consider that it should not be selected for areas north of the Humber.

Whilst a straight stand has its place look to add to the value of it by including linseed, Poacher Millet Mix or triticale. Both of which are compatible with sorghum in terms of agronomy options and will bring benefit to both game and farmland birds.

Kings Sorghum mix

SORGHUM

Matt’s advice . . .

Looking for the standing power of sorghum but fancy more feed to go with it? Consider our Campaign Mix South - the best of both worlds that you can keep

weed free and help farmland birds at the same time!

Stand and Deliver

We continue to encourage all our customers to consider having a third of their area allocated to perennial crops. 2018 was a classic case in terms of difficult establishment conditions for newly sown crops - those with perennial crops already in place felt a sense of relief knowing that they had crops that would perform.

We are increasingly seeing improved return from drives with perennial headlands as they provide warmth and protection as well as giving game greater protection from overhead predation.

• If you are looking for a simple perennial cover crop with a first year nurse then this the option for you

• Can be used within the EFA Fallow option where a long term cover is required

Forage Crops Case StudyFarm managers, Richard Pennock and Gavin Wilson first introduced cover crops to their large North Yorkshire farming operation in 2016, following severe floods which decimated significant parts of the land. Determined to revive the struggling soils, they planted a large area and were blown away by the difference the crops made. Now, they are incorporated into the wider rotation and used as part of a whole-farm soil management and grazing strategy.

With the help of Clive Wood, Kings business development manager, the bespoke mixes have been designed to complement existing rotations and enhance soil health while also meeting Ecological Focus Area requirements and providing a valuable feed option for the farm’s livestock.

This multifaceted approach contributes to the farm’s environmental assets, gives valuable ground cover and provides a cost-effective grazing method. As a result, the farm business is benefitting from improved soil management and yields, alongside significantly reduced costs associated with cover crop desiccation.

Thanks to detailed planning and careful management, Richard and Gavin are a great example of how an effective cover and forage crop strategy can help to make the most of environmental and commercial opportunities.

Visit the Kings website for more detail about Richard and Gavin’s work.

FORAGE CROPS

Kale rape hybridsThe result of hybrid breeding between kale and forage rape, kale rape is quick growing and winter hardy, ideal for summer sowing and grazing through autumn and winter. Dry matter yields are often 15%/20% above traditional forage rapes.

• Interval - Great leaf to stem ratio. Ideal for early grazing - 10-12 weeks of planting. The top yields at typically 8% above the nearest competition. Top mildew resistance.

• Swift – High yielding. Can provide notable regrowth after initial grazing period. Suits later sowings.

Forage rapeForage rape is a quick growing, leafy brassica generally planted in the summer months to provide a complete grazing crop during late autumn and early winter. With fleshy growth, most of the plant is consumed, including leaf and stem, so there is little waste. Often sown in mixtures with stubble turnips to provide a balanced autumn/winter feed.

• Sparta - Top dry matter yield potential. Importantly with clubroot resistance and high winter hardiness.

• Hobson - Excellent for finishing lambs. Top yielding conventional variety and ideal for late grazing. Good resistance to mildew and with top winter hardiness scores.

Fodder beetFodder beet is grown to harvest the mature root for feeding during winter. It will notably out-yield, in terms of Dry Matter, both turnip and swede crops. Energy beet varieties for biogas use are also available.

• Tarine - Produces the top dry matter yields. It has a medium dry matter percentage. Pink flesh with low bolting risk and Rhizomania tolerant.

• Barents - Very high yields of clean well shaped roots that allow easy harvesting with a high % in the ground. Large tops and suitable for late harvesting. Low disease risk.Rhizomania tolerant.

• Brick - A high DM% variety with top yields. Rhizomania tolerant with 75% of root in the ground like sugar beet.

• Magnum - Can produce substantial yields. Notably good frost tolerance.

• Beretta - High dry matter. Good disease resistance. Ideal for late lifting.

• Splendide - Excellent all round variety. Good dry matter content. High beet yield. High root to leaf ratio.

Turnip rapeTurnip rape provides a useful alternative to traditional forage brassicas, combining a leafy top with a small root.

• Jupiter - Quick growing and winter hardy, particularly suited to northern regions. Flexible sowing window, ideal for planting until end of September.

Main crop turnipsMain crop turnips provide a robust forage crop when planted in early summer and can provide a flexible grazing opportunity from late summer to the end of winter. Often mixed with a stubble turnip to spread the period of feed availability.

• Green Globe – Late maturing variety that can be grazed from between 90- 120 days of planting. Combines a leafy top with a substantial root.

SwedesSwedes provide a high energy winter feed that can be grazed or lifted as required. Where grazed they should be strip grazed to avoid wastage.

• Gowrie – Top yielding variety for pre or post Christmas use. Good resistance to clubroot and powdery mildew.

• Invitation – Ideal for late winter use. Very hardy with high DM% and large leaves. Useful for sheep or cattle.

MaizeForage maize is grown to make silage from the immature plant. Best results come from harvesting when most grain sites have converted soluble sugars to starch. The target for harvest is to achieve 27-35% dry matter silage.Available varieties include:

• Augustus - FAO 160 - Maturity rating 11. Ultra early variety with yield potential 4-5% over Kentaurus. No. 1 in the Ultra early class.

• Calvini - FAO 170 - Maturity rating 9. New for 2019 - sets a new standard. Exceptional yields in the early class. The best early plant vigour. Suits forage and biogas.

• Ambrosini - FAO 220 - Maturity rating 6. Later maturing but unbeatable yields. Suitable for high yielding sites in favourable locations. Ideal for AD..

Lee’s advice . . .

Forage crops are an increasingly valuable element of farm rotations. Their use as a break crop within the

wider rotation and a means of reducing the reliance on bought in feeds can not be underestimated.

www.kingscrops.co.ukTurn to the web for faster, easier online purchases

Arable silageMost commonly combining legumes and cereals, these mixtures are an excellent way to create a high volume forage crop containing both starch and protein. Sown from March onwards, they can provide fresh cut material fed directly or be ensiled for winter use. They also benefit following crops by helping to improve soil structure, retain nutrients and fix atmospheric nitrogen.

• Peas and oats – A simple combination of a legume and cereal.

• Peas, triticale and wheat – Provides a blend of energy, palatability and yield.

• Bespoke mixtures – Contact Kings to discuss mixtures to suit specific needs.

Forage ryeForage rye is excellent for early grazing where the window between other crops is short. It can be strip grazed for cattle or winter sheep and made into big bale silage as required. It is useful for Biogas with an early harvest date.

• Traktor - New for 2019. Specially bred for forage production (not a grain type). Best in class yields at 7% above Protector. Ideal for early ‘bite’ grazing as spring growth can be three weeks earlier than Italian ryegrass. Very good mildew resistance and top protein %.

• Protector – Grows quickly in low temperatures. Provides good entry to a following forage maize crop.

• Ovid – a spring rye. Can be sown between January and May.

LucerneLucerne provides palatable high protein forage from 3-4 cuts a year. Drought tolerant and it has five years potential. Seed requires an innoculant.

• Marshall - Well adapted to the UK. Highly suited to silage or hay. Thin stems give a very palatable crops.

• Daisy - Verticillium wilt resistance avoids drying out of leaves and disappearance of plants. High protein content and high dry matter yields.

Stubble turnipsStubble turnips are the most common forage crop, either broadcast into a standing cereal crop prior to harvest or drilled into the stubble immediately after the combine. Economical to grow, they provide a flexible late autumn and early winter forage opportunity.

• Samson – A fast growing sweet tetraploid that encourage significant intake by livestock. Produces large purple ‘tankard’ roots with the top yields.

• Delilah – Notably the best resistance to mildew, creates large white roots with plenty of grazing potential.

• Barkant – Traditional stubble turnip. High yielding. High leaf to root ratio.

• Tyfon – Leafy type with a small bulb. Winter hardy. Can be summer sown but also useful for late spring planting to provide grazing during dry periods, when other forage opportunities may be limited.

KaleKale can provide an abundant feed supply for grazing from mid summer to late winter. A versatile crop offering the highest dry matter utilisation of all forage brassicas. Cruiser insecticide is no longer available, but we apply our Synergy seed treatment to boost early growth - see page 29.

• Caledonian - The top yielding Marrow stem type variety, with clubroot resistance. Usually the highest yielding variety in trials. Ideal for cattle and very winter hardy. About 20% extra yield over Maris Kestrel.

• Coleor - High yielding, leafy, diploid kale of short to medium height. Renowned for high leaf to stem ratio. Notable winter hardiness. Distinctive purple colouration.

• Maris Kestrel - Excellent leaf to stem ratio. Long grazing utilisation period. Top digestibility rating and winter hardy.

A wide range of other forage crops always available - including westerwolds ryegrass, forage peas, vetch, chicory and plantain.

GREEN COVER CROPS

Green Cover Case StudyAs Scotland’s most northerly seed potato producer, efforts to safeguard the soil are paramount to production at Bindal Farm.

As well as being significant growers of malting barley, winter oilseed rape and winter wheat, farmer James Gordon and his sons Alan and Callum also sell straw. As a result, protecting their soils and trying to mitigate any nutrient loss has always been a priority but, after a challenging winter led to severe erosion, the family knew they needed to do more.

Following a visit to a local Kings Farm Demonstration Site and seeing the benefits offered to soil from cover crops, the Gordons sought the expertise of Kings Scotland technical advisor, Alan Johnson. Working together, they implemented specific green cover mixes suited to the region to mitigate erosion, capture nitrogen and improve soil health all-round.

The Gordons are also set to benefit from future agri-environment schemes too. With an increasing focus on safeguarding natural capital, many stewardship agreements look set to reward growers for enhancing the natural environment. With ongoing support from Alan and the rest of the Kings team, the Gordons are already helping to meet agriculture’s environmental objectives.

Visit the Kings website for more detail about the conservation projects at Bindal Farm.

The use of green cover crops within rotations continues to grow in popularity across the UK. This drive comes from both legislative influence and the desire to improve soils, crop health and overall business resilience.  Working closely with research institutions and seed breeders, we continue to drive innovation on farm, delivering multiple outcomes. With our guidance, your green cover crops can support integrated pest management strategies, provide valuable forage and deliver agri-environment revenues.

Green Cover InnovationThe need to understand the issues taking place in our soils, in virtually every field we farm, has become an important starting point to address what we all realise is a yield and quality plateau. We continue to see a significant growth in the interest in and use of green cover crops across the following areas.

• Meeting compliance needs – through EFA obligations and stewardship options

• Improving soil health and structure – utilising a range of species with varied soil biota and rooting activity

• Development into Conservation Agriculture – reduced and no-tillage systems with extending rotations

• Management of soil borne pest and disease – across cereal, legume and root crops the opportunities for integrated crop management are considerable

• Supporting livestock grazing requirements – whether it be in house stock or a flying flock cover crops are becoming increasingly important to livestock interests that in turn can improve soils and hep recycle nutrients.

In order to support the ongoing innovation we are actively involved in a number of projects across the UK. We see this as a critical step in the progression of learning and knowledge transfer – the following summarises the key projects.

River Wensum Demonstration Test Catchment Project – University of East Anglia/Salle Farms

Innovative Farmers – Alternative Methods for Terminating Cover Crops

James Hutton institute – Completion of Three Year Rotational Trial of Green Cover and Spring Barley

University of Sheffield/PlantWorks - Ongoing Evaluation of Mycorrhiza and Rhizobacteria within cover crops and spring crops.

Kings is Cover Crop Partner to Groundswell 2019 as the event moves into its fourth year at Lannock Farm, Ware, Hertfordshire. There are exciting developments for this year as the site rotates to a new field within the farm – in addition to our usual fixed demonstration plots and larger scale working machinery cover crop area, we will be supporting work looking at techniques for direct drilling with and without crimping straight into a fully established crop of rye.

The 2018 event was a tremendous success with both days seeing us inundated with visitors from across the world, all of whom were hungry for information and open to expansive dialogue across this fascinating and growing sector.

We look forward to seeing on the 26th and 27th June.

Tickets go on sale in March – for details of these and the wider event visit www.groundswellag.com

Catch crops and cover crops for EFAsWith the withdrawal of the use of Plant Protection Products on all EFA areas and in particular on the nitrogen fixing crops (peas and beans), in 2019 cover and catch crops will attract greater interest as a means of meeting Ecological Focus Area (EFA) requirements of the Basic Payment Scheme (BPS).Cover crops and catch crops as an EFA option must be selected and managed to meet key requirements around mixtures, species, dates and areas.

They need to be a mix of at least two different types and within specified periods, as highlighted below.

The 2019 English EFA rules are as follows:

• Catch Crops must be established by 20th August 2019 and retained until at least 14th October 2019

• Cover Crops must be established by 1st October 2019 and retained until at least 15th January 2020.

Cereal Species Each mix needs at least 1

Oats, Rye and Barley

Non-Cereal Species Each mix needs at least 1

Radish, Mustard, Vetch, Phacelia and Lucerne

The percentage of crops contained in the mix is flexible, as long as there is a visible mix of at least one cereal and one non-cereal from the list above.

Inclusion of other species will mean that the mix will not count as an EFA.

Kings has a range of standard mixtures that suit the EFA option and can also tailor-make mixtures to individual needs. Taking advice is highly recommended to ensure compliance with the rules while also meeting the needs of the farm.

To learn more about how growing cover crops can benefit your business and the options available, speak to your local advisor or call Kings on 0800 587 9797.

Oil RadishOil radish has rapid growth and is excellent at catching residual nitrogen preventing it being leached. It produces high levels of organic matter and its strong, deep roots will penetrate and work through compaction to improve soil structure. It is not a clubroot host, making it valuable in a rape rotation and is approved for use within a mix with a cereal in Ecological Focus Areas in England and Scotland. Kings oil radish varieties include:

• Siletta Nova - Our most popular classical oil radish variety. It has a medium flowering date and produces high biomass levels with deep roots. It is useful in a potato rotation as it reduces corky ring spot and the transmission of tobacco rattle virus carried by the Trichodorus nematode.

• Bento - Bento is a sister variety to Siletta Nova and has the same nematode activity characteristics. Similar in growth habit to Siletta Nova but may start flowering a little earlier. It is very popular in potato rotations in Scotland.

• Baracuda - Combines a high early vigour and deep roots with, importantly, very late flowering. It covers the soil with crop canopy very quickly, making it an ideal choice as a cover crop. It is a medium/low biomass variety, making it easy to destroy. It is a Class 2 beet cyst nematode reducer as well.

• Adagio - This variety has all the benefits of Baracuda as above, but has larger biomass so is good for grazing, but still with very late (or no) autumn flowering.

• Bokito - Produces a large amount of biomass and is a good choice when grazing is needed. When increase of organic matter is your goal, Bokito is the answer. In addition, it is a BCN 2 variety.

• Defender - Classified as a multiresistant, medium flowering oil radish, it is very valuable within potato rotations. It can reduce both cyst and free living nematodes. Has good Beet Cyst Nematode reduction and is efficient at reducing free living nematodes such as root knot, stubby root and root lesion types. Offers good bio-fumigation opportunity with the correct management.

• Stinger - A tillage (Daikon type) oil radish with very deep powerful roots. Especially useful to improve soil structure either alone or in mixtures with other radish varieties.

We have a wide range of other oil radish varieties for different purposes, such as beet cyst nematode reduction only varieties (Level 1 and 2), along with alternative multi-resistant types that can tackle other free-living nematodes.Using the incorrect brassica variety may encourage some nematodes. It is important when tackling nematode problems with brassica cover crops that laboratory tests have been carried out to indicate which nematode speciesare present.

MustardAn economical option with rapid growth and high biomass, mustard has a short growing season and is suitable for late drilling. It is an efficient nitrogen catcher but not always winter hardy. Careful variety selection can provide biofumigant properties and provenreduction of Beet Cyst Nematode, but mustard can exacerbate clubroot and nematode issues, so be sure to take expert advice. Kings varieties include basic white mustard, nematode resistant mustard, brown mustard and Ethiopian mustard for biofumigation.

Clive’s advice . . .

Bringing livestock into the arable system to graze of green cover crops can bring benefits to soils and the farm business. We can offer specific guidance

on varieties and species most suit your particular requirements.

Soil Vitality Mix

Carefully formulated green cover mixtures can provide multiple benefits. They often combine a deep rooting crop to retain fertility, with a legume crop to trap atmospheric nitrogen. With careful selection, mixtures can provide increased organic matter and soil biodiversity, a rich improvement in soil humus, improved soil structure and a reduction in soil pests and diseases.

Kings’ range of standard mixtures suits most situations. Where you have more specific needs or require organic seed, we provide advice and guidance on creating individual mixtures to suit your soil type and cropping rotation.

GREEN COVER MIXTURES

Biofumigation cropsBiofumigation needs crops that mulch easily and have a high glucosinolate content that rapidly breaks down to produce biofumigant gas - Isothiocyanates. Working closely with specialist breeders, Kings mixtures of mustards and radish are formulated to give high biofumigant gas production.

VetchVetch is a large seeded legume which fixes large volumes of atmospheric nitrogen and supports soil fungi and bacteria significantly. Vetch can provide winter hardiness, deep roots and fast growth. Kings varieties include common vetch and hairy vetch. Vetch is also a very useful partner in mixtures.

CloverClovers have a wide range of growth characteristics and levels of productivity, but all of Kings’ varieties are effective at fixing atmospheric nitrogen. Options in the clover group include Berseem, Crimson, Balansa and Red varieties.

CerealsCereals are easy to establish with high biomass production, good nutrient catching ability and good support of soil bacteria and fungi - especially Mycorrhizal fungi. Depending on variety selection, other benefits include fast growth and reduction in free living nematodes. Kings’ cereal options include forage rye, strigosa oats and common oats.

GrassKings offers a number of grass based options designed to provide green cover benefits. These can range from short term Westerwolds to three year high output grass blends that will improve soils and deliver high volumes of biomass for AD units.

Other speciesOther species with benefits in a green cover situation include winter linseed, Gold of Pleasure, phacelia, sticky nightshade and buckwheat. These crops can provide nitrogen catching, soil health improvement, fast growth, good rooting and nematode reduction; take expert advice to select the best crop for your specific needs.
