DAREarts is a non-profi t organization that works with identifi ed children

ages 9 to14 in high priority communities

across Canada.

Our out-of-school programs use creative

thinking and interaction with arts professionals

to inspire personal discovery and insight.

Experiences in all the arts move children out of diffi cult life

circumstances to see the world through a positive

and innovative lens.

By peer teaching in their schools, children build leadership skills and infl uence over 10,000 Canadian children yearly.

DAREarts LETTER TO STAKEHOLDERS

In its 15th year, DAREarts reached out to empower 10,000 Canadian children with self-confi dence, courage and leadership skills using the arts. DAREarts focuses on children who are challenged by their socio-economic environments: 65% live in the GTA, 25% live in rural Ontario and 10% live in other regions of Canada. The success of DAREarts’ education programs is measured by analysis and reviews from children, parents, schools and artists.

DAREarts All-The-Arts Core Program From January to June, 200 children, aged 9 to 14, who had been chosen as delegates from over 60 schools in priority neighbourhoods, gathered to explore all the arts. They engaged in ‘real life’ experiences in music, dance, drama, visual art, architecture, literature, photography, fashion and culinary arts. These youngsters then returned to their respective school communities as leaders to ‘peer teach’ another 6,000 children. The children learned the value of self-discipline and responsible action as tools for success. Lead teachers, Genevieve Anthony and Ann Lyons, plus six experienced teachers and 60 arts professionals engaged the children in day-long workshops. Education partners included the AGO, Bata Shoe Museum, Canadian Opera Company, Gardiner Museum, the National Ballet School, Opera Atelier, the ROM, the Textile Museum and many more.

DAREarts Extension ProgramsThese programs continue to build on the values that have been introduced in our core program. They evolve in response to opportunities and requests from the youth.

DARE2Act : On Friday nights, teen grads of DAREarts helped to organize their own sessions to continue learning life skills that built their confi dence, courage and leadership. In partnership with Wayne Box, they learned ways to give back to their community by raising almost $1,000 so that younger DAREarts children could visit local museums.

DARE2Drama : Actors Adam Waxman, Jennifer Gillespie and Noelle Scorrano led DAREarts summer camps for 50 youth that culminated in a trip to The Stratford Shakespeare Festival where they toured the theatre, tried on costumes, saw ‘The Tempest’ and met privately with lead actor, Christopher Plummer. The youth then performed the play, increasing their sense of accomplishment. Lombard Insurance and Coach Canada generously provided a special day of tours, workshops and performance at The Shaw Festival in Niagara-on-the-Lake for 30 DAREarts teens. Many of these youth had never experienced a small town or been inside a theatre to see a live play.

DARE2Play: Funded by the Herman Smith Music Trust, 6 children received after-school violin lessons with violinist Moshe Hammer. The project expanded into numerous schools in priority neighbourhoods as the Hammer Band – ‘From Violence To Violins’ program.

DARE2BDance : In partnership with ‘Break It Down’, 180 youth from six high schools developed dance skills in weekly lessons with young B-Boy professionals. The program culminated in an energetic showcase ‘battle’ of their accomplishments in June.

DARE2Draw: 3,000 Canadian children joined one million ‘Children for Peace’ worldwide in painting original cards to sell and help children hurt by wars. In partnership with Headwaters Arts Festival and NATO peace keepers, they helped children in Afghanistan go to school safely. Our children felt great pride in knowing they were taking positive action to help children in need.

DARE2Sing : In partnership with jazz musicians Howard Rees and the legendary Barry Harris, and funded by an anonymous donor, 400 children from central Toronto schools rehearsed weekly with Brian Katz, Sam Chung and Rachel Cleland-Ainsworth. In January, they showcased their jazz at the Koerner Hall as the We Are One Jazz Choir.

National Ballet of Canada : 250 DAREarts children and their families were able to enjoy nights out at the National Ballet through their ‘Share The Magic’ program.

DAREarts ‘First Roots’ Aboriginal ProgramThirty Webequie teens continued the work from the past two years, telling their story in their own poetry, song, photography and videography. DAREarts artists-as-teachers, led by Cathy Elliott, partnered with community leaders, artists and teachers in this remote northern Aboriginal community to inspire the youth and help them combat suicide and substance abuse. This multi-year pilot project has helped to create a national template for use in other communities across Canada. Underwritten by Noront Resources Ltd., ‘Fill My Hollow Bones’, a full length documentary by Peter Elliott and narrated by Graham Greene, is now ready for national media distribution. Much of the footage is shot by the youth themselves.

DAREarts Leadership ProgramWhile our focus is elementary school children, DAREarts continues to support its graduates through their teen years. Many graduates continue to live by DAREarts’ core values of Discipline, Action, Responsibility and Excellence. Many frequently return as volunteers to help the younger children. Some even start their own charities! Five hundred corporate leaders and patrons supported the DAREarts Leadership Awards Gala, our fl agship fundraiser in Toronto. Six DAREarts teen graduates were awarded scholarships for showing leadership in their lives. Canadian icon Eugene Levy and The Second City were honoured with 2010 DAREarts Cultural Awards.

Revenue SourcesFor the year end July 31, 2010, total revenues increased 18.1% to $646,700. Although corporate donations were fl at at $319,900, they were once again lead by the annual Lombard Inner Circle’s contribution. Individual donations were up 18.3% while foundations and government funding doubled over the last year to $119,400. Management maintained its goal of ‘breakeven’ operations as required by Revenue Canada with a nominal defi cit of $11,400. Net assets remained steady at $114,700; with cash & receivables down from $122,400 to $108,700 for computer upgrades. Long term DAREarts supporters continued showing their commitment to the children through this economic downturn.

Revenue Sources 2010

Richard Patina, President & CEO Lombard Insurance continued as Chairman of DAREarts with J.C.Pennie, Chairman & CEO, Windrush Energy, as Vice-Chairman and Treasurer and Julian Sale as Vice-President.

Education program expense represented 71.8% of costs that included art supplies, space rental, bussing, artists and teachers that once again impacted the lives of about 10,000 children. Administration costs dropped to 13.2% of revenues. Funding and Promotion costs were also reduced from last year to 16.7% of revenues to continue the Leadership Awards campaign and update the DAREarts website. The DAREarts Foundation did not have any debt at year end.

Expenditures in 2010

The Year AheadChildren, parents, schools and teachers continue to request more DAREarts programs for children. With gangs, drugs and violence on the rise in many communities, it is our mission to provide positive and safe risk-taking activities for vulnerable children. Thank you for your help. With our proven success records, we will continue to build a diverse funding base while maintaining widespread community support.

In 2011, we will:• Partner with others to further multiply the DAREarts

experience for more children; • Expand DAREarts’ national, provincial and local reach;• Initiate a National Advisory Council;• Build more effective communications, including social media, to

maximize awareness of DAREarts;• Increase support from both public and private sources.

One child at a time, we truly can change the emerging culture of violence and apathy in our children’s world by challenging them to reach inside themselves to build their self-confi dence and courage to become leaders and ignite change in their communities. Thank you for helping.
