This issue is composed of 8 review papers written by the current editors of the APJAS who are leading experts in each field of atmospheric science branch. It is hoped that the papers in this issue will stimulate further development and confidence building for improving our knowledge of weather and climate science. Acknowledgments. As of January 2014, 50 years have passed since 1965, the

time when the Korean Meteorological Society (KMS) published

its first volume of the Journal of Korean Meteorological

Society (JKMS). The first paper of the volume was “On the

Seoul Tornado of September 13, 1964” about the tornado that

passed through the suburban Seoul. Here we would like to

point out that the copyright of the current Asia-Pacific Journal

of Atmospheric Sciences (APJAS, http://apas.edmgr.com) has

been owned by the KMS for 50 years. Full-fledged efforts for

the internationalization of the journal since mid-1990 made the

APJAS to be included in the journal list of Thomson Reuters’

SCIE (Science Citation Index Expanded) and also in SCOPUS,

the Elsevier Bibliographic Database in 2008, indicating the

increased awareness and quality of the journal.

Meanwhile, there were international memorial conference

and symposium in Seoul in 2013, celebrating the 50th anniver-

sary of the KMS, which embarked on December 19th, 1963.

This special issue is a contribution to the 50th volume of the

KMS journal as well as to the 50th anniversary of the KMS

itself. This issue is composed of 8 review papers written by the

current editors of the APJAS who are leading experts in each

field of atmospheric science branch. It is hoped that the papers

in this issue will stimulate further development and confidence

building for improving our knowledge of weather and climate

science.

Acknowledgments. We, the chief and executive editors of the

Asia-Pacific Journal of Atmospheric Sciences (APJAS), are

grateful to all the authors, reviewers, and KMS and APJAS

staffs.
