Introduction 5 \!!I,HHing Started A Loading I t.Controlling the I Simulation 6 This Handbook provides detailed operating instructions, technicaldataandtacticaltips.It appliestoallcomputer systems. TheTechnicalSupplementgivesspecificinstructions for your computer system. TheKeyGuidepresentsallthemaincontrolsandkey functionsataglance,andisdesignedtobeplacednextto your keyboard. TheTechnicalSupplementhascompleteinformation aboutloading thesimulation and itsinstallationonto hard disk. Oncethesimulationhasloadedyouwillbeaskedto insertarosterdisk.Instructionsastohow tocreatearoster disk can be found in the Technical Supplement. Thecontrolinterfaceongeneralselection/mission planningscreenswillsupportmouse,joystickand keyboardinput.When amissionhasbegun youmust usea joystick or keyboard to control your team members. j, ~ TheMain MenuIl.L.Ia.I....aL 7 ain Menu .hTheRosterScreen ~ T ! I 8 When the simulation has loaded the Main Menuwillappear. Onthelefthandsideofthescreenarefiveoptions,which will not becomeselectableuntilyouhaveinsertedarosterdiskand pressed fire. Anyblank,formatteddiskcanbeusedasarosterdisk.For further details of how to prepare a roster disk,please consult your technical supplement. Youcancreateandkeeprecordsofuptoeightdifferent SpecialForcessquadronson eachrosterdisk.Eachsquadronis givenaname,andonewillbehighlightedwhentheroster screenfirstappears.Selectthesquadron you wishtocontrol,or create a new one if it the first time you have run the simulation. Tocreate a new squadron press the 'ESC'key on the keyboard. The highlighted name willbeerasedand youshouldenter your new squadron's name via the keyboard.Pressthe "Return"key or theFirebutton onthejoysticktoacceptthenewsquadron.Be warned,creatinganewsquadronautomaticallyerasesthe previous squadron's record. Therosterscreenalsoshowsthepointsawardedtoeach squadron,themissionsattemptedbythatsquadron,andits currentstatus(ACT= Active,RTD= Retired,MIA= Missingin Action). If youhavecreatedmorethanonerosterdisk,andwishto switchbetweenthemviatherosterscreenyoumaydosoby inserting the new rosterdisk,moving the on-screen pointer over the"DIR."iconon the rightof the screenand then pressing the leftmousebuttonorjoystickfirebutton(thismethodof I selectinganoptionisreferredtothroughoutthishandbookas "clicking on" an icon). The squadron names stored on the new roster disk will appear. Whenyouhaveselectedasquadronyouwillbereturnedto themainmenu.Thefirsticonontheleftofthescreen,"DIFF. LEVEL"willnolongerbeshaded.Thisshowsthatitisnow selectable.Youshouldclickon it tosetthedifficultylevelat which you wish to attempt your first mission. Youmustselectoneoffourlevelsofdifficultyforthe operationyou are going to undertake. Levelsof difficulty areselectedby clicking on one of the four iconsat the bottom of the screen;Conscript,Regular,Veteranor Elite. Thelevelcurrentlyselectedishighlighted.Youmayview thetextreproducedbelowbymoving the on-screenpOintervia mouse,joystick or keyboard over one of the options.Click on an option to select it. Conscri pt :Yourmenhaveadvancedequipment.Your missiontargetsaremappedwhenyoubeginyourmission.The enemyarepoorlytrainedandbadlymotivated.Theyreact slowly and inefficiently. Theyalso have older,obsolete weapons. Regular:Yourteamhavemodernweapons.Yourmission objectives are givenusing a grid reference system. The enemy are properly trainedbut inexperienced.They have good reactions in training but mayhesitateor freezein combat.Theyhaveolder equipment but arefamiliar with it. The Main Menu Operation Difficulty Level 9 The Main Menu 10 Veteran:Yourmenhaveadvancedequipment.Mission objectivesarenotshownonyourmaps.Theenemyare experiencedsoldiers.Manyofthemfoughtinprevious campaigns and arehighly skilled.Theyhave modern equipment and know how to use it. Elite:Yourmen have advanced equipment. Mission objectives are notshown on your maps.Missions must often be completed withinsettimelimits.Theenemyarehighlymotivatedand experiencedcombatveterans.Armedwiththelatestweapons, they won't hesitate to shoot. Firsttimesquadroncommandersareadvisedtoselect Conscriptlevelofdifficultyfortheirfirstassignmentand Regular fortheir second. This allows you to develop a feelfor the simulationgraduallyandtoexperiencecombat withoutcoming under intense pressure from the enemy. The difficulty level selected will have a bearing on the number ofpointsandmedalsawardedon itscompletion,toreflectthe danger you faceat higher levels of difficulty. When you have selected a difficulty level you will be returned tothe MainMenu."Diff.Level"willnow beshaded,but "Select Mission" will be selectable.Youshould do so. The Main Menu The sixteen missions available to each squadron are set in oneSelect Mission offourareasof theworld,definedby theclimatefoundin that area;Tropics,Desert,ArcticorTemperate.Pages63-84ofthis handbookgiveageneraloverviewoftheenemylikelytobe found in each area and offers background information specific to each scenario. Eachof themissionsvariesgreatlyaccordingtothelevelof difficultyselected,asdoestheamountofinformationgivento youatthemissionbriefingstage.Squadronsmayperformeach missiononlyonce;theycanperformonemissionat,for example,"Regular"difficultylevelandanotheroneat"Elite" level,butcannotrepeatapreviouslya t t ~ m p t e dmissionata differentlevelofdifficulty.If asquadronmemberbecomes "Missingin Action"(MIA)during amissionyoumay alsoreturn to attempt a rescue at a later stage, further details of which can be found on page 15. Althougheachof thesixteenmissionscanbeperformedin anyorder,youwillfindthesimulationatitsmostrewardingif the missions are played through fromthe firstTropics mission to the final Temperate mission in sequence. The mission briefing filesusually contain three pages of notes. Thefirsttwopagesgiveawrittenbriefforthemission,which shouldbereadcarefully,andthethirdpageshowsanaerial reconnaissancephotograph of themissionarea.When youstart amissionyouwillhaveaccesstothemap which youtakewith you;themissionobjectivesandconditionscanbefoundon pages63-84of thehandbook.Pleasenote that missionbriefings may change from those given in the handbook asa result of your actions on an earlier mission. Toturn the pagesin the mission briefingfile,clickon oneof thearrowsinthelowerright-handcomerofeachpage.One arrow turns the pages forwards and the other backwards. TheMain Menu Eachmissionhasaclearlydefinedobjective,whichmustbeMissionConditionsl\ achievedforsuccessfulcompletionofthemission.However,in~I somecasesmissionsmustbecompletedaccordingtocertainJl conditions,or "Rules of Engagement"Y Rulesofengagementoutlinetherangeofenemyequipment andforcesyourteamcanandcannotdestroy.SpecialForces squadsareoftenusedintimesofconventionalwarfare,when one state has declared war on another,and knowledge of the war ispublic.However,theqctivitiesofaneliteSpecialForces squadronaremosteffectivewhentheyareundertakenwithout publicknowledge,enablingpoliticianstodenyinvolvementin the affair. Duringsuchstealthmissions,yourteammusttrynotto exposethemselvesatall.Whenanoperationisundertakenin the context of a limited or conventional war it isimportant that theenemyarenotabletoreportthataspecificSpecialForces 13 The Main Menu 14 squadroncarriedouttheattack.Suchknowledgewouldallow them toprepareforfutureattacks.Oftenyouwillbe'softening' targets to prepare for the movement of other forcesinto the area. Duringamissionbriefing,notewhetheramissionisa conventional,limitedorstealthengagement.Further informationaboutrulesofengagementcanbefoundonpages 41-42 of the handbook. Youwillalsobeinformedastowhetheryour"Drop-Points" are'pre-set'or'selectable'.Youwillbetakentotheareaof operations by helicopter,which will,if drop-points are selectable, dropanymanatanypointdecidedbyyou.If theyarepre-set, the men will be dropped at the pre-set point. The choice of drop-points is covered more fully on page 20. Inthelowerleft-handcornerofeachpageofthemission briefing are two icons,"Exit"and "Select". "Exit"will return you to theMissionSelectionScreentoselectanalternativemission.If youarereadytoattemptthemissionforwhich youhavebeen briefed,clickon"Select".YouwillbereturnedtotheMission Selection screen.Youshould immediately click on the "Exit"icon to return to the Main Menu. The"SelectMission"optionwillbeavailable,if youwishto returntoselectanalternativemissionortocheckonyour mission briefing. If youarehappy withthemissionyouhaveselected,choose the "Select Squad"option. RESCUEMISSIONS If ateammember becomes"Missing in Action",youmay return to the WarZone to attempt a rescue at a later date. This willbe your only mission objective. The original mission will bereplacedin thefilingcabinetwith afileentitled "Rescue POW",which can be selected in thenormal way.Youwill be given the position of the POW at the mission briefing stage. TheMain Menu Uponselectingadifficultylevelandmissionyoumust selectSelect Squad your squad.Initially,eight SpecialForces operatives are available, from which you may select up to four.Youcan attempt a mission with less than four operatives, but such a decision should only be takeninexceptionalcircumstances.Asmissionsareperformed, squadmembersmaybecomeinjured,demoralised,orbecome missinginaction.Insuchcircumstances,youmay beforcedto attempt a later mission with less than four operatives. A teammemberwhohasbecomeMissingInActionwillbe greyed out.One who has been Killed In Action will not appear. Eachof theeight teammembershasbeentrainedaspartof theteam.Theirspecialistskillshavebeendevelopedsoasto complimentoneanother.Theirlevelsoffitnesswillvary throughoutacampaign,butatthestartofacampaignallwill have'average','good'or'excellent'levelsoffitness.Fitnessis closelylinkedtomorale.Althoughateammembermaynot be injuredduringamission,hisparticipationinanunsuccessful 15 The Main Menu 16 missionislikelytoaffecthismoraleandthereforehiseffortin training.Thenetresultislikelybebeadropping in hislevelof fitness. A squadmember'sfitnessalsohasadirectbearingonthe weight loadhe isabletocarryduringa mission.Thefitterhe is, the more equipment he can take with him. When thesquadselectionscreenfirstappears,SergeantMike Kolowsky'sdetailswillbeshown on the clipboard at the bottom of the screen.Heisthe soldierstanding at the left-handedgeof the upper screen. Clicking on another one of the eight operatives willbringhimtothestandingpositionandwilldisplayhis details. The personal details foreach squad member can be found on pages 85-87 of the handbook. Duringamission,teammembersareknownbyoneoffour codenames; Shark, Tiger,Cobra or Eagle. Youassignacodenametoeachmanyouwishtotakeona mission. Toassign him a codename, and hence select him for the forthcomingmission,clickon acodenamewhenhisdetailsare displayed(theman willbestanding up). Hewillbe tagged with thefirstletterofhisassignedcodenameandisnowpartof the team. Hewill remain standing until deselected. Whenyouhaveselectedallthemembersof yourteamand assignedthemeachwithacodename,selectthe"Exit"iconto returntotheMainMenu.Theoptionto"SelectWeapons"will now be available. The Main Menu Totheleftof the screenisamonitorshowing variousdetailsSelect Weapons about your team and icons foryou to select in arming your team. Totherightisthekit-bagtobeloaded.Intheupperleft-hand cornerof thescreenyouwillseethefoursymbolsrepresenting thecodenamesof yourteammembers,Shark,Tiger,Cobraand Eagle. Beloweachsymbolyouwillseethatman'smaximumload rating,inKilograms.Yourmencanonly carryequipmentthat weighsequal to or lessthan their maximum load rating.Thisis determined by physical fitness.The fittera teammember is,the more equipment he can carry. Asyouassign weaponsto each man,the weight he isto carry will be shown just below his maximum load rating. Thereareeightdifferentweaponsfromwhichtochoose, shown on the right of the screenjust abovethe kit bag.They are aBrowningPistol,aSterlingMachinePistol,aLee-EnfieldRifle, Grenades,L.A. W.Rockets,LaserTargetDesignators,Remote Explosives,and an Engager Machine Rifle.They can be combined inanyarrangementforeachteammember,providedthathis maximum load rating isnot exceeded.Full weapon specifications can be found on pages 60-62 of the handbook. Youcaneitherchooseoneofthreestandardauto-loads,or alternativelyloadwithyourowncustomisedselectionof weapons. 17 The Main Menu 18 AUTO-LOADING Toauto-loadasingleteammember,highlighthiscodename symbol.Then select icons "I", "2"or "3"immediately to the right of"Auto-Arm".Hewillbeloadedwithyourchosenstandard load.Details of the three standard loads can be foundon page 62 of the handbook. Toauto-loadthenext teammember,highlight hiscodename symbolandrepeattheprocess.Alternatively,allteammembers can beimmediately auto-armedwiththe samestandard loadby selectingicons"1","2"or"3"immediatelytotherightofthe "Arm-All"icon. CREATING YOUR OWN BAGS. Clickonaweaponandthemousepointerturnsintothe selectedweapon.A descriptionoftheweaponyouhavepicked upwillappearin themessagewindow. Takecarefulnoteof the weapon weight. Youcan now increase or decrease the amount of ammunition asrequired for that weapon by clicking on the + or -buttons .Takenoteofthemaximumnumberof magazines/weaponsallowedforeachweapontype,andthe weightof anyammunition. If youexceedeitherthenumberof roundsallowedorthemaximumloadratingforthatoperative youwillnotbeallowedtoplacethatweaponintothekitbag. Whenyouhavedecidedtotaketheselectedweaponandhave settheamountofammunition,simplymovetheweaponover an empty bag slot and click. Youcanalsoarmeachteammemberwiththesamecustom picked bag. If,forexample, you make up a bag forShark,by selecting the nextteammemberandthenselectingtheCOPYBAGoption, you may duplicate Shark's bag for the next team member. TheDEL.optionwilldeleteeveryiteminthecurrentbag displayed. When youhavearmedeachteammember withhisrequired weaponry,youarereadyforcombat!Selectthe"Exit"iconto return to the Main Menu. Select the "Enter Warzone"icon. There's no turning back. The Main Menu Yourteam of men areflownto the mission area by helicopter.Entering TheWarzone~ Theexactpointatwhichtheyaredroppedoffisoftenyour,u decision;occassionally drop-points will be pre-set,when advance intelligencehasindicatedthatonlylimitedsafedrop-pointsare available.Pre-setdroppOintsshouldalwaysaffordyourteama margin of safety in the first fewminutes of the operation. 19 The Main Menu ~Selecting Drop-Points 20 Assoonasyouselecttoenterthewarzoneyouwillviewthe mapofthearea.Aseachmapisdifferent,itisnotpossibleto giveyoumorethan a generaloverviewof theenvironment you areabout to enter.Enemy reactions and concentrations of troops will vary by scenario and by difficulty level chosen. Youareadvisedtospendsometimestudying the mapof the area.Thelikelihoodof successof amissionusuallydependson carefullyselecteddrop-points.Yourdrop-pointsarealsousedas pick-uppoints.Thehelicopterwillonlyreturntoapointat whichithaspreviouslydroppedoffateammember,exceptin extraordinary circumstances. Thebuildings,roads,riversandanybridgesonthemapare easily identifiable.Foreach mission,a brief overview isprovided on pages64-83of the handbook,illustrating important buildings andpointsofnoteinthemissionarea.Youshould,ofcourse, takecarefulnoteof thehintsgivenduringthemissionbriefing. Installationsdescribedinthebriefingwillusuallybeeasily identifiable from that description. Youwill be invited to select the drop-point foryour firstteam member,usually "Shark".Find the cross-hair pointer on the map. Youcanmovethecross-hairsviajoystick(therecommended methodofcontrol)orkeyboard.Thecross-hairswillmove quicker if you pressthe firebutton while moving the joystick.As thecross-hairsmoveyouwillseereddotsappearon thescreen. Thesereddotsrepresentthelastknownpositionofenemy troops,asseen by infra-red spy satellites monitoring the area. Whenconsideringthebestpositionfordrop-pointsyou shouldpayspecialattentiontothepositionofenemytroops. Eachbuildingorinstallationislikelytoshowahigh concentrationoftroops.Troopbarracks,theenemyHQ,key junctionssuchasbridgesorcross-roadsandanyspecifically namedtargetsarelikelytobeheavilyguarded.Selectingdrop-pOintsimmediatelyadjacenttosuchfeaturesisunwise, particularly during stealth missions. Donotassumethatyourteammembersneedbedropped neareachotherornearspecifictargets.If theenemyarewell drilled,youwillalmost certainlyneedtocauseadiversionaway fromthe central target.Often,only one team member willreach theprimaryobjective.Otherswillbedrawingattentionaway from him. Thebestoptionisoftentodroptroopsawayfrom installations,but nearenoughtoreachthatinstallationquickly, andtoreturntothedrop-pointforpick-upquickly.Donot expectyourfirstmissiontobeeasy.Youwilllearnthe appropriate tactics for each mission as you play it. Notethat eachteammemberneednot returntohisspecific drop-point to be picked-up. Anyteam member can be picked up from any other member's drop-point. Toselect a drop point simply position the cross-hair and press thespacebar.Eachteammembercanbeassignedadifferent drop-point,butyourteammaybemoreeffectiveworkingin pairs or asa teamof four. Althougha team of fourismore easily spottedbytheenemy,theywillbeabletocovereachother during the mission.

The Main Menu1111 21 The Main Menu 22 Whenyouhaveselectedadrop-pointforthefirstteam member,youwillbeinvited to repeat the processforthe others. If yourmenareworkinginformations,thesettingofa waypoint for the lead man in the formation willcause all men in that formation to move together. Onceawaypointhasbeenset,youmaywatchtheteam member'sjourneybyreturningtotheWarZoneView.On completionofhisjourneyamessagewillappearintheradio message box,and he willstopmoving.Youcanhalt hisjourney prematurely forwhatever reason by simply pressing hisFunction Keytore-takedirectcontrol.Thecross-hairwillre-appearand you can move him by moving the joystick. MOVING VIA DIRECT CONTROL The team member displayed on the Main Screen immediately beforeyouaccessedtheScaledTerrainMapwillbe flashingand hisexactposition denoted by areddot immediately next to the flashingnumber.Youstillhavedirectcontrolofthisteam member, and moving the joystick will cause him to move. Youcan takedirectcontrol of ateam member and movehim aroundviatheScaledTerrainMapevenifhewasoriginally under computer control, by pressing and holding the "SHIFT"key andsimultaneouslypressingtheteammember'sFunctionKey (FI-F4).Byholdingthe"SHIFT"keyandpressingtheFunction Key again you can put him back to computercontrol. Moving team members directly viathe Scaled Terrain Map can beuseful,especiallyif theteammemberisinopenspacewith fewenemycloseby.However,nearbuildingsandinstallations (andtherefore usually near enemy troops!)directcontrol viathe Scaled Terrain Map isnot usually advisable. ImmediatelyaccesstheScaledTerrainMapandturnonthe Grid.Beaware that,if your target ismobile (e.g.a person), it may move fromgridto grid.Obviously,it cannot move directly from gridreference A.2to D.4,but will move to an adjacent square. YouwillreceiveanyupdatedgridreferencesviatheSatellite RadioLink. Whenplayingat"Veteran"or"Elite"levelsyourspecific missionobjectivesremain unmapped.Youmust searchforthem yourself. Although this can prove difficult,a little thought will go a long way!Peopleand documents areunlikely to be foundvery farfrombuildings,exceptinexceptionalcircumstances,and other clues can often be found in the mission briefings. Youwillreceiveradiomessagesinforming youof any changeRadioMessages intheenemy'sstateof alertandthemovementof anytarget object,thefrequencyof whichdependon thelevelof difficulty youhavechosen.Messageswillalsoappeartoinformyouif anotherteammembercomesunderattack,iswounded,orhas becomemissinginaction,andtotellyouwhenanewsatellite map update isavailable. 37 38 Your Objectives locating your Objectives Youwillalsobe toldwhen ateammember comesnear toan object which isworth retrieving or a target. This willusually be a missionobjective,but may beanenemy disguise.If youcollect the enemy disguise you can move anywhere on the map without being detected. Eventuallyyouwillcome veryclosetospecificobjectives.In theWarZoneView,specificobjectiveswillalwaysbeclearly identifiable.A person who must be rescued will bestanding with hishandstied,andsomeonewhomustbeassassinatedwillbe marked by an arrow above his head. If thepersonwhoformsyourobjectiveistobeassassinated, you can do soby any means. Simply eliminate him asyou would any other enemy soldier. If the person isto be rescued,simply move alongside him and pressthe"ESC"keyonthekeyboard.A helicopterwillarrive quickly to speed you away to safety,in the same way that you are normallypickedupfromamission.Notethat youdonot have to be in a pick-up zone to be rescued if you areaccompanied by a hostage. If youmust findanobjectaspart of yourmission,youmust moveovertheobject,thenitwilldisappear.Youmustthen return to a pick-up zone for collection. .,

When yourmenareundercomputercontrol(whichismost of the time) they can each be set to behave in one of two general ways;tobestealthy,attemptingtohidefromtheenemy wheneverpossible,elimatingthemwhenevernecessary;orto attack,opening fireon any enemywithinrange, without regard to concealment or secrecy. These two"moods" arecalled "Stealth" and "Attack". Thecurrentmoodofateammembercanbeseenonthe WarZoneView,asexplainedonpage24.A daggerindicates "Stealth" and apistolindicates"Attack".Eachteammembercan be in either mood,independent of team-mates' moods. Totogglebetweenthesetwomoods,simplypressthe"TAB" key on the keyboard. WheninStealthmodeateammemberwillhidefromas muchenemyactivityaspossible.Hewillnotattackunlesshe hasbeenseenandisabouttobeattacked.Stealthmodeis designed to be used on the stealth and limitedengagements. While Attack mode can be usedonstealthandlimitedengagements,itisreallydesigned for use on conventional engagements. Rulesof Engagement 41 42 Rules of Engagement Eachmissionmustbeundertakeninaccordancewiththe missionconditions,or"RulesofEngagement"setat themission briefing.Rulesofengagementoutlinetherangeofenemy equipment and forcesyour team can and cannot destroy.Special Forcessquadsareoftenusedintimesof conventionalwarfare, when onestatehasdeclaredwaron another,andknowledgeof the war ispublic.However,the activities of an elite Special Forces squadronaremosteffectivewhentheyareundertakenwithout publicknowledge,enablingpoliticianstodenyinvolvementin the affair. Duringsuchstealthmissions,yourteammusttrynotto expose themselvesto the enemy at all.Points arescored forthe accomplishmentofthePrimaryObjectiveandforyourmen leavingtheWarZonesafely.Thedestructionofotherbuildings will result in the removal of points. DuringLimitedEngagementsyouwillreceivepOintsforthe accomplishmentofyourmissionobjectiveandforthe destruction of some buildings and allenemy troops.However,if the number of enemy troops killed exceeds a limit determined by the level of difficulty selected,the enemy will be put on fullalert. SpecialForcesteamwork can bedivided into twoseperate but related areas; formations and tactics. FORMATIONS Teammemberswilloftenbeworkingin veryclosephysical proximity,whether travellingfrompoint A topointB together, undertaking asweepsearchof an area,or holding aposition. In such circumstancesyouwillbe asking apair of men,or allfour, to move in the same direction at the same time. Theissuing of such ordersto each man viathe Scaled Terrain Mapwouldbetedious;viatheWarZone,impossible.However, thespecialformationoptionallowsyoutoovercomethese problems. There are three formations which your men can adopt; Single Member - the standard one-by-one 'formation' .
