September 22 Monday – Music, Tuesday – Art, Wednesday – P.E., Thursday – Music, Independent Reading 5 th grade students have officially received their first quarter due dates for their Independent Reading Goal. Each quarter 5 th grade students are required to read 5 chapter books of their choice that are in their Lexile range . Once they have finished their book they are required to take a Scholastic Reading Counts test and report their score to their teacher. Students may only choose 1 graphic novel (Examples include: Dork Diaries or Diary of a Wimpy Kid) to read this quarter. If a student chooses, they may complete the reading BEFORE the due dates for the quarter and then be on a “Reading Vacation” the rest of the quarter. The due dates for each book are below. Students may have the opportunity to use some Reading Workshop time to read but most will have to read at home to complete this requirement. As the year progresses, and I continue to get to know your students, I’m grateful to see the diversity of the students’ personalities, as well as learning styles. We continue to charge forward with excellence in the classroom. Next week, we will have an early release day on the 20 th , and the fishing field trip on the 21 st . I mean, “outdoor education” trip. I’ve reviewed the expectations and rules with your students. Guided reading groups will begin this week. Writer’s Workshop: We will also do our first writer’s workshop on the Tuesday after Labor Day! We’ll begin to work with nouns and pronouns as well as the basics of the writing process. Spelling: We will focus on Unit 4 words this next week. Your child should be bringing this list home to study as well as the parent- student activity each week. Math: We will continue our first chapter in Math. We’ve covered multiplication and division, and will move into order of operations (PEMDAS) with hopes to finish the chapter Birthday Treats Students are welcome to bring treats for their birthday. The Jefferson City Public School District passed POLICY JCHF which states that for any food to be served in the classroom the ingredients MUST BE KNOWN. Mr. Hettich CANNOT SERVE ANY FOOD WITHOUT A LIST OF INGREDIENTS. Birthday treats must be ready-to-serve. If the food needs to be cut, it must be cut BEFORE it is sent to school. Birthday treats will be passed out in the afternoon around 3:30 PM. We have 22 students in our class. *We do have students this year who have various allergies. Please keep their needs in mind when purchasing your child’s treat to share.* Cedar Hill students, staff and families are committed to ensuring high levels of learning for all students and providing a positive, safe, and consistent climate that promotes student character.

Independent Reading Goals
