The Spanish Cooperative Network of Defence Libraries (CNDL):

Milestones:

Act 1551/2004 of June 25, 2004, enables the Ministry of Defence of Spain to organise and coordinate its own libraries.

To update all the regulations about libraries in the Ministry of Defence.

To promote and facilitate the knowledge and dissemination of the bibliographic and documentary heritage of the Ministry of Defence for everybody who needs it.

Establishment of the Library Coordination Unit (LCU) in September 2005.



The Barcelona Military Library



The Library Coordination Unit mission:

It is responsible for all the libraries of the Ministry of Defence.

It is in charge of carrying out the progressive and

balanced development of the CNDL. It promotes co-operation and collaboration with

other public organisms and private entities.



The Air Force Library



Library Coordination Unit objectives:

To identify. Coordinate. Evaluate the libraries of CNDL. To create the norms for processing of the

collection of the library.

Main goal: to create the legal framework for

the proper functioning of the CNDL.

Goals of the Cooperative Network of Defence Libraries:

To promote and facilitate the conservation, access and promotion of the Bibliographic Heritage of the Ministry of Defence.

To upgrade the use of libraries in all departments of the Ministry of Defence.

To support the need for updating and training of librarians.

To assure the best use of libraries and documentary means by co-operation and co-ordination and their actions.

To facilitate the exchange of experiences and communication between libraries.

To represent the interests of the libraries of the Ministry of Defence.

The Library Census of the Ministry ofDefence:

Provides a useful tool to identify all libraries of the CNDL.

manage the census. Formulates surveys to evaluate data. Results of survey:

to elaborate an updated census of the CNDL. to elaborate the statistics required by the Ministry of

Defence and the National Statistics Institute.

The new library software: AbsysNET

In May 2007 a public bid was launched for the

purchase of the new programme of library software for CNDL.

The new software will be implemented in several phases:

The first participants will be those libraries that already have bibliographic records in the library software.

At the moment 46 libraries are participating in this phase.



The Conference of Defence Libraries:

Held annually

To exchange experiences among librarians from the Libraries of Defence

We are preparing the 3rd edition of the conference

The next meeting will be in Toledo in June

The main topic will be academic libraries



The II Conference of Defence Libraries



Future plans of the Library Coordination Unit:

To set up the new web page with extensive information about the CNDL

To work out specific plans for training the staff of the CNDL

To prepare an exhibition of the treasures of Spain’s bibliographic heritage in the libraries of the CNDL

To compile lists of opinions between librarians by e-mail to exchange news, information and suggestions.

To publish a librarian’s bulletin with the interesting news and information.
