Agriculture has been backbone of Indian economy since ancient times and currently too it
contributes nearly 14% to the GDP of the country and provides employment to over 55% of the
population. Obviously, this sector will always be in focus of planners and policy makers in order to
generate better quality employment and also to develop technologies to meet the emerging
challenges for food and nutritional security.
Haryana has become a model state of India in agricultural progress. This could be possible
because of farmers' friendly policies of State government, technologies' backup provided by CCS
Haryana Agricultural University & ICAR and adoption of latest technologies by the farmers.
Nevertheless, new impetus has to be given to agriculture in Haryana in order to compete in WTO
era and also to enhance the income of the farmers. I appreciate the significant contribution of CCS
HAU Hisar for Commendation Award to Haryana by Central Govt for achieving consistently high
productivity in Wheat and Rice cultivation and contributing to the national food security.
Furthermore, in this era of globalization the market for horticultural and animal products is growing
at a fast rate. Therefore, the scientists must come out with strategies which can help farmers to
harvest such opportunities.
thI believe that the 7 Convention of CCS Haryana Agricultural University Alumni Association will
provide an opportunity to deliberate upon the issues concerning agriculture in this era of
competition and come out with suggestions for bringing qualitative improvement in Haryana
agriculture.
My heartfelt greetings to all alumni of CCS Haryana Agricultural University and I wish a great
success of Alumni Convention.

thIt gives me immense pleasure to know that 7 Alumni Convention of CCS Haryana th thAgricultural University Alumni Association is being organized on March 7 and 8 , 2014
and a souvenir is being brought out to mark the occasion.
CCS Haryana Agricultural University has always been in focus for its contribution in
agriculture. The crop varieties and hybrids and other technologies developed by the
university have helped in realizing agricultural revolution in the state. Consequently the
state is recognized as food bowl of India. As new problems and opportunities are
emerging, we have to revisit our strategies to revamp agriculture.
I am sure that in this convention of Alumni of CCS Haryana Agricultural University, such
issues will be discussed and suggestions will be made for planners and scientists for
future course of action. Alumni Convention is in fact a meeting of intellectuals which helps
in assessing the strengths and weakness of the institution and also to come out with
suggestions to strengthen the institution in order to enhance its competitive ability at
domestic and global levels.
I believe that the alumni will share and transfer their knowledge to the youth during this
two- days convention.
I wish the convention to be a great success.

I am indeed delighted to learn that CCS Haryana Agricultural University Alumni Association is thorganizing 7 Alumni Convention during March 7-8, 2014. I have come to know that earlier six
conventions organized by the alumni association were very successful and helped in achieving its
slated goals to a large extent. In my opinion, accelerated efforts are needed for development of
stronger linkages among the alumni of this university to achieve the objectives of benefiting the
nation in general and Haryana agriculture in particular.
Agriculture is no longer an occupation of subsistence. It is emerging as knowledge based industry.
Without application of science and technology in agriculture, the future sustainability is uncertain.
Now agriculture requires multifold approach to manage natural resources, marketing, storage,
and processing & value addition in order to make this sector more vibrant, employment oriented
and sustainable. I feel that in this convention the learned participants will also deliberate on such
issues and come out with tangible propositions.
Further, being a proud alumnus, I am happy to share that CCS Haryana Agricultural University is
widely recognized for its role in agricultural revolution in the country. I appreciate the significant
contribution of our alumni in achieving consistently high productivity in Wheat and Rice cultivation
in the state and resultant contribution to the national food security. Their consistent efforts
facilitated Haryana to bag Krishi Karman Award for highest wheat productivity state in the country
consecutively for the last two years. Undoubtedly, our graduates have contributed a lot in this
endeavor. I believe that this convention would help sensitizing CCS Haryana Agricultural University
graduates further to enhance their contributions towards enriching the agrarian based national
economy through quality based and valued added agriculture education.
I wish a grand success to this convention and convey my best wishes to all alumni of CCS Haryana

The erstwhile Haryana Agricultural University, popularly known as HAU within
India and abroad, came into existence on February 2, 1970 by an Act of
Parliament "Haryana & Punjab Agricultural Universities Act, 1970". On 31st
October, 1991, it was rechristened as "Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana
Agricultural University". The University has continuously striven for excellence for
fulfilling all the three missions of a comprehensive land grant institution: teaching,
research and extension. True to its role of being a leading institution of the country,
CCS HAU has made significant contributions in agricultural education. Various
degree programmes are being run both at graduate and postgraduate levels, to
impart agricultural education so as to fulfil the demands of trained technical
manpower in different branches of agriculture, agricultural engineering, home
science and other allied fields.
Under the direct supervision and over-all authority of the Vice-Chancellor, the
Registrar serves as primary advisor on administrative matters. The Deans of
respective colleges bear the primary responsibility of running teaching
programmes alongwith Dean Post Graduate Studies who looks after the
postgraduate programmes. Objectivity, reliability, professional excellence and
positive approach are the guiding core values in broadening the agriculture
educational facilities in the State. As a consequence of the changing nature of a
growing economy in an era of globalization and knowledge, the significance of
agriculture education has been recognized and hence this University is capable of
continuous innovation to meet the corporate requirement.
With effect from 1.1.2009 a new Career Advancement Scheme for teachers has
been implemented in the University. This scheme provides promotional avenues
to the teachers. An Assistant Professor on the basis of consistent good
performance, passing through four stages, gets elevation to the level of Professor
within a span of 15 years. Not only this, 10% of Professors with 10 years service,
based on their scientific achievements of high order, are promoted as Senior
Professors. Also there is provision for grant of incentive increments to those
Assistant Professors/equivalent who join the University after attaining
Ph.D./M.Phil degree and qualifying NET. Those teachers who do Ph.D./M.Phil
while in service also get this benefit of incentive increments. During the last two
years as many as 25 Assistant Professors have been recruited.
During the year 2012-13 and 2013-14, 415 & 360 students have been admitted in
UG programmes and 503 & 309 in PG programmes, respectively. With effect
from the Session 2013-14 system of online submission of admission forms in
addition to offline submission of admission forms was introduced successfully.
As per directions of the Haryana Govt. five Bhutan Nationals have been admitted
to B.Sc. (Hons) Agri. 4 year programme. The secrecy work relating to external
pattern of examination in various UG and PG programmes has been successfully
completed. There is tough competition for admission to various degree
programmes of the University and admission to B.Sc. (Hons.) Agri. and M.Sc. in
FST, Molecular Biology & Biotechnology and Bio-informatics is done through
Entrance Test. Degrees upto 31.12.2012 have been awarded to the students.

Directorate of Human Resource Management
Dr. Ram Singh, Director HRM
Human resource management is the framework for helping
employees develop their personal and organizational skills. It
is the function within an organization that focuses on
recruitment and management of an organization's workforce.
Human Resource Management means ensuring growth and
development of the employees so that they become more
valuable to the organization. The employees of any
organisation are the most dynamic and alive component and
their smooth and fruitful interaction across different
disciplines results in the growth of the institution in the right
direction. The Directorate of Human Resource Management
of the University ensures this growth through its varied
activities spread over a broad spectrum. Established in 2002
the Directorate of Human Resource Management carries out
its multifarious duties through its four cells viz., the Academy
of Agricultural Research and Education Management,
Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation Cell, Manpower
Assessment Cell and Intellectual Property Rights Cell cum
Business Planning and Development Unit. The activities of
the Directorate include trainings, experiential learning,
planning, budgeting, monitoring & evaluation, and manpower
assessment & post clearance. The Directorate facilitates
agricultural education in the University through judicious
planning and evaluation of resources. Concerns of
intellectual property and commercialization of technologies
are also dealt with by the Directorate of Human Resource
Management. For a wider reach the university enters into
MoUs with private and public agencies at national and
international levels for cooperation in teaching, research and
extension.
Academy of Agricultural Research & Education
Management (AAREM)
One of the functions of human resource management is
orienting the new employees to the new environs and
facilitating professional development through training.
Directorate of Human Resource Management does it through
AAREM. The Academy was established in 1994 under
Agricultural Human Resource Development Project of the
Govt. of India with financial support from the World Bank. The
Academy addresses the issue of career development and
competence improvement of its faculty and staff through
various refresher courses and training programmes. AAREM
has developed incomparable capability to conduct training
programmes and is equipped with all the basic and
ultramodern infrastructural facilities and teaching aids for
th7 Alumni Convention I CCS HAU, Hisar 35
institutionalized in-service trainings. It plans and conducts
need-based training programmes in emergent areas for
University teachers, scientists, extension specialists working
in SAU's and ICAR institutes as also for research managers,
policy makers, administrators, agricultural officers and other
personnel working in the field of agriculture and allied
sciences. Apart from Induction Training specifically meant
for the newly recruited faculty the academy has developed
unique expertise in the field of Educational Technology,
Research Management, Extension Management, Computer
Education and Communication Skills & Technical Writing and
offers refresher course in these fields on regular basis. Along
with these core courses AAREM also conducts area specific
training programmes on different aspects of agricultural
education, research & extension in collaboration with other
cells/ departments/ outside agencies. The Academy also
imparts trainings through various sponsored courses of
Govt. of Haryana and ICAR. AAREM has also been a favourite
choice of organizations from abroad for conducting training
programmes for their faculty and officials. Displaying a
pioneering propensity towards education the Academy has
also conceptualised and offered continuing education
programmes viz. PG Diplomas in Agricultural Journalism and
Human Resource Management for the academic and
scientific fraternity of the country. It also organizes group
discussions, seminars, workshops, educational visits etc. on
various aspects of agricultural education. To ensure a
comprehensive development of the human resource of the
university the Academy also organises training programmes
for the non-teaching/administrative staff of the university.
Since the last Alumni convention in Feb. 2012 the Academy
has conducted a total of thirty training events taking the total
number of training programmes since its inception to 293.
Out of the 30 since Feb. 2012 thirteen were for faculty, ten for
administrative / non-teaching staff and four for both teachers
and staff. One five-day international course was conducted;
and breaking new grounds the Academy also conducted two
courses for its PG students.
In addition to the training programmes, AAREM also initiates
and finalises Memoranda of Understanding with various
organisations. At present seven such MoUs are functional for
national collaboration. The faculty is also nominated regularly
for participation in trainings, seminars, conferences, and
workshops outside CCS HAU in national and international
institutes of repute. The visits of international dignitaries to
the University are planned and coordinated by AAREM. It also
handles the Experiential Learning Project of ICAR, awarded to
CCS HAU. AAREM also updates and uploads the data of the
University in respect of its faculty, staff, students and
infrastructure for the Ministry of Human Resource
Development Project i.e., All India Survey of Higher
Education.
Planning, Monitoring & Evaluation Cell
The Planning and Evaluation Section of the Directorate is
entrusted with the responsibility of planning and evaluation
work. Financial support to the University comes mainly from
the State government and the Directorate, through this
section, shoulders the responsibility of disbursing and
monitoring the financial resources for teaching, research and
extension activities of the University in the most judicious
manner. This section prepares overall perspective
development plans; evaluates the broad activities of the
university and suggests improvements. Through this
section, DHRM also maintains linkages with the State
government departments, Indian Council of Agricultural
Research, State Agricultural Universities, various
departments of Govt. India and other organizations in the best
interests of the University.
A sum of Rs. 17000.00 was sanctioned by the State
Government which included Rs. 410.00 lacs to be expended
on SCSP component during the year 2013-14. Subsequently,
the documents Annual Plan 2013-14 - (Proposed Outlay) &

Directorate of Human Resource Management
Dr. Ram Singh, Director HRM
Human resource management is the framework for helping
employees develop their personal and organizational skills. It
is the function within an organization that focuses on
recruitment and management of an organization's workforce.
Human Resource Management means ensuring growth and
development of the employees so that they become more
valuable to the organization. The employees of any
organisation are the most dynamic and alive component and
their smooth and fruitful interaction across different
disciplines results in the growth of the institution in the right
direction. The Directorate of Human Resource Management
of the University ensures this growth through its varied
activities spread over a broad spectrum. Established in 2002
the Directorate of Human Resource Management carries out
its multifarious duties through its four cells viz., the Academy
of Agricultural Research and Education Management,
Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation Cell, Manpower
Assessment Cell and Intellectual Property Rights Cell cum
Business Planning and Development Unit. The activities of
the Directorate include trainings, experiential learning,
planning, budgeting, monitoring & evaluation, and manpower
assessment & post clearance. The Directorate facilitates
agricultural education in the University through judicious
planning and evaluation of resources. Concerns of
intellectual property and commercialization of technologies
are also dealt with by the Directorate of Human Resource
Management. For a wider reach the university enters into
MoUs with private and public agencies at national and
international levels for cooperation in teaching, research and
extension.
Academy of Agricultural Research & Education
Management (AAREM)
One of the functions of human resource management is
orienting the new employees to the new environs and
facilitating professional development through training.
Directorate of Human Resource Management does it through
AAREM. The Academy was established in 1994 under
Agricultural Human Resource Development Project of the
Govt. of India with financial support from the World Bank. The
Academy addresses the issue of career development and
competence improvement of its faculty and staff through
various refresher courses and training programmes. AAREM
has developed incomparable capability to conduct training
programmes and is equipped with all the basic and
ultramodern infrastructural facilities and teaching aids for

institutionalized in-service trainings. It plans and conducts
need-based training programmes in emergent areas for
University teachers, scientists, extension specialists working
in SAU's and ICAR institutes as also for research managers,
policy makers, administrators, agricultural officers and other
personnel working in the field of agriculture and allied
sciences. Apart from Induction Training specifically meant
for the newly recruited faculty the academy has developed
unique expertise in the field of Educational Technology,
Research Management, Extension Management, Computer
Education and Communication Skills & Technical Writing and
offers refresher course in these fields on regular basis. Along
with these core courses AAREM also conducts area specific
training programmes on different aspects of agricultural
education, research & extension in collaboration with other
cells/ departments/ outside agencies. The Academy also
imparts trainings through various sponsored courses of
Govt. of Haryana and ICAR. AAREM has also been a favourite
choice of organizations from abroad for conducting training
programmes for their faculty and officials. Displaying a
pioneering propensity towards education the Academy has
also conceptualised and offered continuing education
programmes viz. PG Diplomas in Agricultural Journalism and
Human Resource Management for the academic and
scientific fraternity of the country. It also organizes group
discussions, seminars, workshops, educational visits etc. on
various aspects of agricultural education. To ensure a
comprehensive development of the human resource of the
university the Academy also organises training programmes
for the non-teaching/administrative staff of the university.
Since the last Alumni convention in Feb. 2012 the Academy
has conducted a total of thirty training events taking the total
number of training programmes since its inception to 293.
Out of the 30 since Feb. 2012 thirteen were for faculty, ten for
administrative / non-teaching staff and four for both teachers
and staff. One five-day international course was conducted;
and breaking new grounds the Academy also conducted two
courses for its PG students.
In addition to the training programmes, AAREM also initiates
and finalises Memoranda of Understanding with various
organisations. At present seven such MoUs are functional for
national collaboration. The faculty is also nominated regularly
for participation in trainings, seminars, conferences, and
workshops outside CCS HAU in national and international
institutes of repute. The visits of international dignitaries to
the University are planned and coordinated by AAREM. It also
handles the Experiential Learning Project of ICAR, awarded to
CCS HAU. AAREM also updates and uploads the data of the
University in respect of its faculty, staff, students and
infrastructure for the Ministry of Human Resource
Development Project i.e., All India Survey of Higher
Education.

the junior most undergrads to the senior most Ph.D. scholars
is the University Youth Festival which has been very
appropriately named Utsav. This fest is truly a celebration of
life. The University Youth Festival is organized in two parts.
A total of forty events are organized; Part-1 witnesses the
students competing in 17 literary and graphic arts events,
while Part-II is dedicated to cultural activities pertaining to
music, dance, drama etc. A full-fledged Film Club organizes
film shows for the students and staff of the University. The
Directorate of Students' Welfare does not rest on its laurels. It
continues to look for new activities, which are useful and at
the same time of interest to students, and keeps on adding
them to its calendar of events.
Dramatics and music are very popular among students. The
faculty with the Directorate trains and moulds the students for
musical events and teams are sent regularly to participate in
inter-college / varsity competitions and Youth Festivals. The
activities of SPICMACAY are also looked after by this
Directorate. Artistes of international repute are invited for
lectures-cum-demonstrations in the university. Another
pioneering step that the Directorate has recently taken is
staging of Haryanvi Swangs in a bid to revitalize our folk
traditions. All these efforts have succeeded in acquainting the
students with the rich cultural heritage of the country and the
state. The Literary & Debating Society, on a regular basis,
organizes inter-college debating, declamation, essay writing
competitions in a bid to hone the skills of students, and train
them for competitions at the State and National level. Those
having inclination for photography are nurtured through
Graphic Art Society.
Inter-college sports, literary and cultural competitions are a
regular feature at the university and we are proud to inform
our alumni that the renewed efforts of the Directorate have
borne fruits. The Mountaineering Club has been re-
established and it has started working with a rejuvenated
effort. In its present stint the members of the Mountaineering
Club have scaled a number peaks. It goes to the credit of the
Club that girls also joined as members of the climbing
parties.
NCC and NSS have a special role in developing the sense of
discipline and service in the youth. Over the last few years,
the Directorate has taken a lead in strengthening the activities
of NCC and NSS at the university. NCC unit for girls, which
was lying in abeyance for past several years, has been
revived. The seats of NCC are being increased, and we hope
that very soon five Units of NCC as against three at present
will start functioning in the University. With the guidance of
increased and greater numbers are now admitted. To cater to
the increased number of female students Godavari Hostel,
which was earlier, meant for boys, has been converted to
Girls' Hostel and suitable alterations have been made. An
International Girls Hostel has also been added as 'Yamunotri'
hostel having rooms with provision of self-cooking and
attached bathroom. One distinctive feature of the university
hostel facilities is a PG Married Hostel which is a self-
contained unit adequate for a small family. Two new hostels
are in the pipeline. The Directorate believes in the old proverb
"All work and no play make jack a dull boy" and, therefore,
also strives to better the entertainment experience of the
students. With this view, LCD TVs have been installed in all
hostels. The facility at the University Hospital, which also
comes under the purview of the Director Students' Welfare, is
now better geared to serve the University community with
improved facilities.
The infrastructure has further been improved through the up
gradation and proper maintenance of playgrounds. All
playgrounds have now netted walls around them. The
University has the Synthetic Track of the international
standards. The Badminton & Volleyball Courts and Hockey
ground have been provided with added facilities of global
standards. This improved infrastructure is amply utilized
through various sports activities organized by the Directorate
for the students. Regular Athletic Meets are now organized
annually where students make and break records. A
distinctive feature of the Athletic Meet is that there are several
sporting activities for the faculty and employees in various
age groups. The Directorate has ensured that facilities for all
the registered games exist on the Campus. As a result
tournaments of various games have been organized. The
students of the University have widely participated and
secured inter-varsity and inter-agri.-varsity positions in
various tournaments. Several old records have been
improved upon. The Directorate of Students' Welfare has
well-qualified sports faculty under whose guidance camps in
various sporting activities are organised regularly.
CCSHAU is committed to the growth of its students in all
areas. That is why the par ticipation in games and
extracurricular activities is mandatory for its students. To
achieve this purpose the DSW has constituted as many as
25Clubs/societies in the University, with members of the
faculty as advisers to the students. Each undergraduate
student has to compulsorily participate in one of the
approved game or cultural activity. Qualified faculty are there
to guide the students for this purpose. Cultural and literary
activities form a regular feature of the Campus activities.
Apart from the regular activities being organised by various
healthy interaction between the students and the faculty is
maintained through various formal and informal activities.
The responsibility of an educational institution is not over with
providing good education only. We prepare our students for
life outside the University. We also try to ensure that they
follow satisfying career path after their education is over.
This issue is taken care of by the Counselling Placement Cell
through its various training programmes and campus
placement drive.
Today is the era of healthy but stiff competition and the youth
needs to have a well balanced and rounded personality to
succeed in life. Our old scriptures also advocate the
acquisition of various other skills along with academic
excellence. Since its inception, the University has recognized
the importance of effective Counseling and Placement
program for students. The activities of the Directorate are
targeted towards this aim. The Students' Counselling &
Placement Cell in the Directorate has been associated with
multifaceted development of the University students for their
personality development and to prepare them to face the
challenges of future with greater confidence.
All personality development activities have been intensified.
In fact the number of training programmes towards this end
has doubled during the last two years. It seems pertinent to
mention here that the Directorate through the Counselling &
Placement Cell organizes general trainings for students in the
fields of communication skills, spoken English, computer
education, public speaking skills, group discussion etc. In
addition to these, job oriented specialized trainings in various
areas of agriculture and allied sciences are also organized. To
attain its underlined objective, SC&P Cell of the Directorate
has organized more than 50 job/self-employment oriented,
skill development and technical training programs over the
last two years during the off academic hours. The Cell also
guides and provides relevant information on scholarships
and fellowships in India and abroad, financial assistance
available to students for their own agri-business and other
self-employment units as also various competitive
examinations,. The SC&P Cell brings out a fortnightly 'Career

The Counselling and Placement Cell in the Directorate
arranges campus interviews and advises students regarding
career opportunities in different areas. During the last five
years 720 students of the University were selected by public
sector undertakings and 146 in private sector undertakings
the Directorate, the students have been able to realize their
potential and a record four, two boys and two girls, NSS
volunteers participated in this year's Republic Day Parade.
One of our students Mr. Devender Kamboj brought laurels to
the University by winning Indira Gandhi National Award for
being best volunteer during 2012-13. Equally envious have
been the achievements of NSS at the State, National and
International level. Under the aegis of NSS programme
several days/seminars/campaigns/camps viz., population
education, national literacy, anti-polio, AIDS awareness,
pollution control and other issues of impor tance are
organized.
University Youth Red Cross in the Directorate is doing a
yeomen service by sensitising the students to the emergent
social issues. The Directorate encourages the participation
of Red Cross Volunteers of the University in the state and
national level camps where volunteers learn techniques of
disaster management, environment preservation, first-aid
and other emergency situations. Newly admitted
Undergraduate students ( both boys and girls) are trained by
the University Youth Red Cross in the Directorate in the first
aid service so as to serve the helpless victims of accidents
and other calamities irrespective of caste, creed, community,
country, race and languages. Our students gave
commendable performance during their tests in these camps
and brought many a laurel for their university. Since 2010 the
tradition of holding Blood Donation Camps with the support
of Red Cross has been continuing successfully. The
students have given an overwhelming response to the call of
donating blood; and over the last four years more than 3200
units of blood have been collected for the needy. University
Youth Red Cross in the Directorate organized Blood Donation
Camps and collected 427 and 326 units of blood during the
years 2012 and 2013, respectively.
Female education is important for their emancipation.
Equally important is the issue of their protection. In today's
world when girls and women have to go out of their homes to
make a career, they need to be able to protect themselves.
Self-defence, therefore, becomes an important priority for
women. Taking cognizance of this need the Directorate
regularly arranges for trainings on self-defence for girl
students by professionally qualified experts.
At CCSHAU, the students are nurtured with love and care. At
the same time, they are also taught the value of discipline.
The University follows the policy of zero tolerance towards
any irresponsible or in disciplined activity. Motorized
vehicles have been banned in the hostels. It has been
ensured that the University campus - be it colleges or
hostels - is absolutely free of the menace of ragging. A

Under the leadership of Dr. K.S. Khokhar (Worthy Vice-Chancellor), Dr. R.K. Yadav (DSW) conceived the idea of promoting the Folk Art Culture of the region (Swang). Swang was widely appreciated in the region with the magical performances of its performers Dr. Satish Georgy Kashyap and Dr. Sandhya Sharma Raman.

What is theatre for if it is not for entertainment? It is a kind of entertainment which is not entertainment alone. It carries within it the entire folk culture with all its social and religious reflections. This is Swang an... entertaining sattire.

Swang continues....Swang continues....Swang continues....
The major theatrical tradition of folk entertainment in upper India is
that of Swang. This will clarify our position when we refer to any theatre
form as a theatre of entertainment. Other aspects are not totally
excluded, they are there, but the basic stress is on folk entertainments,
particularly through music and dance. The Swang tradition has
assumed different forms in different regions by absorbing in its texture
different regional theatrical conventions, modes of music and
innovations of local creative theatre workers. The forms such as
Bhagat, Nautanki, Khayal and Saang that are prevalent in Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh
and Bihar belong to Swang tradition.
Swang is a musical folk drama which enacts near similar stories in all its related regional variations. These stories are in
verse and are sung in different classical, semi-classical but mostly in popular folk musical modes. Dialogues and
speeches in prose is the modern graft on these musical modes. Dialogues and speeches in prose is the modern graft on
these musical plays of great charm. These plays are enjoyed for their music and singing, as well as delightful poetry,
where acting generally takes a secondary position. Appropriate costumes and make-up are used when needed, but the
characters, in true folk tradition, may appear in their ordinary day-to-day clothes. Except for Bhagat which is a non-
professional theatre, the companies of Nautanki, Swang and Khyal move from village to village attending various fairs,
festive social occasions and religious celebrations to earn their livelihood. DR. RAM KUMAR YADAV
