Quality Cadet Unit Award Update I am extremely proud to an- nounce that after all of our hard work, we earned the Quality Cadet Unit Award for 2011-2012! From the Commander . . .Capt Jason Erickson

I am continually amazed at the

leadership that we have in our

squadron. From the cadet com-

mander to the newest recruit,

everyone is a leader. What your

role is as a leader changes as

you continue through the pro-

gram.

"Leadership is practiced not so

much in words as in attitude and

in actions.”

Harold S. Geneen

In order to be an effective leader

you must learn how to lead

through example. In the first

phase you learn how to govern

yourself. In the cadets world this

development of leadership is

shown through several ways.

The ones that immediately come

to mind are being prepared,

keeping a positive attitude, and

maintaining outward appearance.

Demonstrations of efficiency and

self-control demonstrate a readi-

ness to promote. We have all

heard about doing what is right

even though others are not look-

ing. Once you can control your

own life you can begin to under-

stand how to offer guidance to

others.

"The function of leadership is to

produce more leaders, not more

followers."

Ralph Nader

Once you get to the point you can

lead yourself it is now time to

start applying what you know.

Now you start to learn how to

truly lead. By working one on

one with another person you will

begin to understand what it takes

to motivate and nurture another

person. Much of what you will

learn is required to go to the next

step.

“Never tell people how to do

things. Tell them what to do and

they will surprise you with their

ingenuity."

General George Patton

Thoughts from your First Sergeant . . .

/SMSgt Luke Hohenberger

his year Southwest Iowa Com-

osite Squadron attended the

nnual Fly Iowa Air show. Every

ear, Fly Iowa is hosted by a dif-

erent town, and this year it wasosted by Atlantic. We were lucky

hat this year’s Fly Iowa was so

ose to our home Squadron. The

eather was perfect for an Air

how, no clouds and a sunny sky.

he theme of Fly Iowa this year

as Heritage and Homecoming.

t the air show they had many

ilitary vehicles on display and

des were available. They also

ad three P-51 D Mustangs, and

a T-6 Texan painted as a Zero!

The United States Air Force had

their Stealth Super car on display

was an instant draw to the crowd,

because of its sleek design! Hot

Air Balloon rides were given, but

were sadly shut down due to thehigh winds!

At eleven o’clock the planes took

to the sky. The first performance

was the Dogfight between the P-

51 and the Zero. The second

performer was Greg Koontz and

his red Super Decathlon. After

Greg Koontz was done with his

performance, the three P-51s

took to the sky. The pilots of the

P-51s showed the high capabili-

ties of their vintage war aircraft.

One of the pilots of the P-51 was

 Atlantic’s own, Mike Henningsen!

Giving to the theme of Heritage

and Homecoming. For the Grand

Finale, the Alabama Boys pre-

sented a comedy performancewith a Piper Cub. The Alabama

Boys were hilarious; they acted

as if a person had stolen the

plane and took off with it. The

man flying the Piper Cub acted

as if he had no clue how to fly the

plane. Finally, they successfully

managed to land the Piper Cub

on top of a truck.

This year’s Fly Iowa was great,

and I can’t wait for next year.
