2014 SOUTHWEST FOOTBALL GAME PREVIEW
by Michael D. Gunnell Southwest Sports Information
Given the choice, not every team would necessarily like to open its season against the defending national champi-
ons and the pre-season pick to win it all again. But, that is exactly what the Southwest Bears face Thursday night as they host the Lions of East Mississippi Community College. The Lions finished last seasons undefeated (12-0) and claimed the NJCAA’s national championship and enter the 2014 season as the nation’s top-ranked team. Southwest head coach Tucker Peavey said “obviously, they’re a good football team. They’ve established themselves and we certainly want to get to the level that they’re at. At the end of the day, it’s going to be a great test for our team. “We should be able to tell a little more about ourselves after the game is over,” Peavey said. “Hopefully, we’re up for the challenge. If you want to be the best, you’ve got to play the best. That’s the way we need to approach it.” Peavey said there are no lingering thoughts from the coaching staff or the sophomore players regarding last year’s game against the Lions (a 69-0 loss in Scooba). “That was last year,” Peavey said. “We’re basically preparing for the opening game no matter who the opponent would be. That doesn’t change how we try to get ready for the game.” Other than wanting a win, Peavey said he also wants “to see our guys play with a lot of effort, a lot of intensity and handle themselves the right way. We want to see some improvement on the things we’ve been working on. The scoreboard’s going to take care of itself. We’re more concerned about what our guys do and how they go about doing it.” Southwest defensive coordinator Kelby Bowman knows his unit will be going up against one of the most potent offenses in the country. “We expect to see a good offense,” Bowman said, “a returning national championship offense. They are very versatile (and) athletic, so we can’t expect anything but the best coming from them.” Bowman said as he expects “to see a combination of several things” from the Lions. “They’re really balanced when it comes to running and passing,” he said, “but I think they favor the pass a little more than the run.” As to how his defense will counter what the Lions bring, Bowman said it is “just a matter of doing our job, just being responsible as play-ers (and) being where you’re supposed to be. What they (the Lions) do is not a big secret. It’s just ‘can you stop them?’ As far as a coun-ter, hopefully it’s not a counter. Hopefully, it’s just ‘hey, we’re doing our job from beginning to end.’” Southwest offensive coordinator Jamie Everett said he hopes fans will see successful execution from the Bears Thursday night. He said he sees that as the team’s biggest improvement from last season. But, “the problem we’ve had (in pre-season) has been consistency. So, hopefully we can consistently execute our offense.”
Asked what he expects to see from the Lions defensively, Everett said simply “the best defense in the country. There’s a reason they’re the defending national champions.” He said that seven of the Lions’ 11 defensive starters are ranked nationally by recruiting services. “So they’re obviously a great defense. They’ve got a lot of talent, a lot of speed, a lot of size. If you were to put together a junior college defense, that’s what it would look like.” Everett said his offense can not dwell on the talent on the other side of the ball. “We just have to go out and execute and do the little things we practice on every day. It’ll be a big challenge for us, but I think our kids are up to it.” Asked what is to be expected from the kicking and punting game Thursday night, special teams coach Cameron Achord said “we have a new punter and a new kicker, so hopefully we’ll have solid execution on that end. We’ve been stressing that point.” Achord said he also hopes to “have some excitement” from the special teams. “We had a couple of good returns against them (the Lions) last year (and) hopefully we can execute again this year.”
“On kickoff cover (and) punt returns-we want to be able to execute our job and maintain the ball on punt returns and pin (the Lions) deep
for our defense on the kickoff cover unit.” Achord said the Lions do a “lot of traditional NFL-type stuff with their punt team. They don’t get fancy with a lot of things, there’s not a lot of scheming. They’re going to do what they do (and) they do it well. We know what’s going to happen to us (and) we know what scheme’s coming. We just have to execute and hopefully pin them deep and have some big returns against them.” Kickoff at John I. Hurst Stadium is set for 7:00. Fans can listen to the game on WAKH 105.7FM (K106) and on smartphones by down-loading the k106 app. The game can also be seen and heard live by going to southwestbearathletics.com (go to the football schedule and click on “details”).

FOOTBALL SEASON PREVIEW
Under the direction of a new coaching staff, the Southwest Bears went from a winless 2012 to a 2-7 record in 2013. As the 2014 season approaches, second-year head coach Tucker Peavey seems cautiously optimistic that things will contin-ue to improve.
“It’ll be interesting,” Peavey said of the upcoming campaign. “I think today we’re a better team than we were last year (and) I think that’s a positive thing. Obviously, that’s all relative to your opponents and how good they are. But, hopefully, it’s a team that’s able to score a little more on offense and certainly play a little better on defense.”
“Offensively,” Peavey continued, “scheme-wise and defensively we’ll be similar to what we were last year, but there’s a lot better execution and more consistent execution (with this year’s team).”
Addressing his squad’s strengths and weaknesses, Peavey said “In some areas, the strengths are going to be expe-rience because we had to play a lot of freshmen last year. But, again, we’re going to have a lot of new guys in some spots. I think we’ll have a little more leadership because we’ve got more returning players. They know what’s expected and hopefully that bleeds over to the freshmen and they get used to the routine and understand what it takes in order to compete in this league.”
The Bears ran a multiple offense last season and coordinator Jamie Everett said he planned to do much the same this season. “A lot of it depends on what our kids can do,” he said. “I think we’re going to be able to run the football; we ran it very well last year. Hopefully, this year we can make some big-time improvements in catching it. I think with some of the guys we’ve got coming back and some of the guys we’ve signed, we’ve made big improvements there.”
Everett said returning quarterback De’Angelo Ballard (6’ 1”, 194-Newton County) is “a very good running quarterback. He’s improved tremendously throwing the football and this year I think we’ve got some guys around him who can catch it which will help him.”
Everett said he looked for big things from sophomore running back Chris Jones (5’ 9”, 181-Tylertown). Tight end Kel-vin Williams (6’ 5”, 242-Madison Central), who already has Division I offers, along with Jonathan McNair (5’ 7”, 170-Oak Grove) and Ladarrius Slocum (5’ 10”, 160-Tylertown) look to lead the receiving corps.
Moving from defense to tailback is sophomore Dominique Lavalais (6’, 234-Alexandria, LA). Freshmen who could see time handling the ball are Wilkinson County’s LaDarion Peterson (5’ 10”, 180), who can play tailback and receiver; Shuntez “Ed” Smith, (5’ 9”, 170), a receiver from Bogue Chitto; Bassfield receiver Kameron Williams (6’, 180); and, quarter-back Clifford Fernandez (6’ 4”, 265), a Dexter product.
Anchoring the offensive line will be sophomore Tyler Stutzman (6’ 6”, 275), from Parklane Academy. “He’s probably our best offensive lineman,” Everett said. He’s made big improvements in the weight room in the offseason. He’s got a lot bigger and stronger and has always had good feet.”
Everett has several newcomers on the offensive line including Vincent Calhoun (6’ 4”, 330-Alpharepta, GA); Jackson Prep’s Brooks Davenport (6’ 3”, 270); Hillcrest graduate Christian Davis (6’ 3”, 280); East Rankin’s Zack Taylor (6’ 2”, 260); and, Maurey Bland, Jr. (6’, 265) of Madison Central.
Defensive coordinator Kelby Bowman said he will continue to run a 4/4. “I don’t think there’s a need to change, espe-cially when you have the personnel. It’s a pretty solid defense, something the kids already know.”
“I think for the most part,” Kelby went on, “people can expect a more experienced defense (this season). I think it’ll be run a lot better (than last season). We’ll still be a multiple-coverage defense. We’ll still run stunts and blitzes when we need to.”
Terrien Steele (6’ 4”, 304-Reform, AL) and Terry graduate Omarius Bryant (6’ 4”, 292) are back on the defensive line. Also back is Greene County graduate Jarvis Wallace (6’ 3”, 220). Joining the trio are newcomers Jamol Posey (5’ 11”, 303-Hattiesburg) and Kevin Alce (6’ 1”, 249-Apopka, FL).
Natchez Cathedral graduate Khalil Brice (6’ 1 ½”, 230) and Lawrence County’s Glenn Russell, Jr. (6’ 3”, 241) return at linebacker. They are joined by freshmen Anthony Brown 6’ 2”, 205-Noxapater) and Madison Central’s Jamarian Roberts 5’ 10”, 193).
Bowman said on the back end he has E. J. Carthan (6’, 183-Terry) and Gulfport graduate Guy Stallworth (6’ 2 ½”, 190) back from last year. New to the team are Louisiana Tech transfer and North Pike graduate Tra’ Vez Taylor (6’, 185).
Newcomers in the secondary to look for are Roderick Patterson (6’ 1”, 186-Noxubee County), Madison Central’s Jac-arre Ealy (6’, 153) and Jeffrey Pate (5’ 9”, 180). Returning is Lonnie Bonner, Jr. (5’ 9”, 166-Wayne County).
Special teams coordinator Cameron Achord said “we’re probably going to try to do a few different things in the return game” this year. “We’re bringing back our leading returners from last year in Slocum, Jones and McNair. We’ve also got a couple of young guys we’re going to throw into the mix (so) it should be exciting.”
Freshman Reed James (5’ 11”, 165-Germantown) is on board as the kicker while fellow freshman Brandon Mancuso (5’ 10”, 204-Bassfield) looks to handle the punting chores.
The Bears kick off the 2014 campaign on August 28 when they host the NJCAA’s defending national champion, East Mississippi.
