Southfield Sixth FormCelebrating more than 100 years of continued success...

Welcome from the head of sixth form:

Welcome to Southfield School Sixth Form. Our aim is to offer students who have high aspirations an outstanding learning experience which will help them achieve

their goals and enable them to develop as people.

The vast majority of our sixth formers are aiming for university entry and Southfield Sixth Form offers a co-educational environment in preparation for this and other pathways

such as apprenticeships.

In our most recent Ofsted inspection, the Sixth Form is described as good.

“The sixth form is good. Standards reached, and the very good guidance from staff, result in all learners going on to higher education, employment or training.

Many enter into well-respected universities having received a rounded education that prepares them for the real world.”

Don’t just take their word for it though: come and visit us at our Sixth Form Open Evening.

We are also open throughout the year for visits, so please contact our admissions team for further information.

We feel that it is really important that students make plans for their future and take some time out of their busy GCSE schedule to consider life after Year 11. As Southfield School has demonstrated through growth in student numbers and exam attainment, students can feel reassured that they have the opportunity to join a school that is building on its success.

A culture of achievement

As a Sixth Form we are committed to student progress and we feel that Southfield is unique in all that it offers its students. We recognise that achievement and success do not come without support

and we have a dedicated programme in place to assist the transition from school to university. This also enables our sixth formers to grow as people.

• Teaching staff already know or get to know students very quickly as individuals, and students feel that their teachers are approachable.

• All our year 12 attend a university/careers fair.

• We take students to attend mock university interviews.

• We support students through their UCAS application.

• We also support students in applying overseas, such as through the Fulbright Commission for American Universities.

• Students who want to apply for an apprenticeship have special events throughout the year.

• All sixth form students are encouraged in their personal, social and health development through weekly forums.

• Volunteering is actively encouraged, either in or out of school.

• We regularly monitor and evaluate student progress throughout the year.

• All sixth form students will have an academic mentor with whom they will meet at least once a term.

• We offer a robust system of support early on in year 12 which is offered to students who are struggling.

• Students have study enrichment periods on their timetables to maximise their potential.

• Employability skills are developed through a tutor time program.

• Study skills workshops are available for all students.

• Forums often have guest speakers from a variety of universities and apprenticeship providers.

• Students aspiring to attend a Russell Group University, or either Oxford or Cambridge University, will receive additional advice and guidance on their application from our specialised support group.

• All students have timetabled “Silent Study Periods”. Research has shown that this improves A Level grades.

Hallam Post 16 Boys Rep.

“For me, the stand out thing about Southfield is the high standard of teaching here. For my A Levels, besides Physics, I have confidently been able to take on two new subjects, not studied at GCSE, and I am thoroughly enjoying them both.”

• We have an award-winning School Council and all Year 12 students become Buddies, mentors to new Year 7 students.

• Previously, students have travelled to Ecuador, a fabulous four week expedition with Camps International. A Himalaya Expedition is now being planned for 2019.
