Ministry is never easy. It’s not easy in any generation and every generation has its own challenges. But quite honestly, it’s hard to come up with any previous generation that has faced what we know this generation is facing even now and is going to face in the future. We’re living in a time of an increasingly secularized society moving at a pace unprecedented in human history. And furthermore, we’ve moved from a situation in which there has been a growing hostility to the gospel to where that hostility is very public. In one sense, this generation is going to be doing ministry, missions, evangelism, church planting, and pastoring in the context of a culture that is increasingly adversarial and openly hostile.

In order to prepare this generation for that, we’ve got to get them ready not only to defend the faith but to be passionately and compassionately excited about sharing that gospel. We have to train them in new skills in terms of how to face a culture that isn’t going to love them for their message and isn’t going to applaud them for their faithfulness. But we also need to prepare them so they can prepare the church because that’s where, eventually, everything fundamentally matters. Our respon-sibility is to train up a generation of faithful ministers, missionaries, and church leaders so that the church will be faithful in this generation.

The proof of what Southern Seminary is doing, the eventual test of everything we represent, comes down not to what happens here on this campus. That’s first, but ultimately it comes down to what happens in the local church served by, led by, and fed by a graduate of this institution. It’s what happens in a church planted by a Southern Seminary graduate. It’s what happens on the mission field where the gospel is taken by a graduate of Southern Seminary. Eventually, we find out if Southern Seminary is living up to our commitments — if we’re fulfilling our mission, not by anything we can see right here but by what we get to see out there in the world.

In the context of an increasingly secularized society, we know full well why Southern Seminary is needed. We serve the church, we serve the gospel, we serve the truth. Ultimately however, all these things find their true mean-ing in the fact that we serve the glory of God. Southern Seminary ultimately exists for one reason: that the church of Christ will be more faithful, the Lord’s churches will be more mature, more effective, more passionate in the truth, that the Lord’s church will be ready when he comes, and ultimately in the beginning, in the middle, and in the end, it’s all about the glory of God.

TRUSTEES NAMED R. ALBERT MOHLER JR. AS THE NINTH PRESIDENT OF SBTS IN 1993.

WE’VE GOT TO BE READY NOT ONLY TO DEFEND THE FAITH BUT TO BE PASSIONATELY AND COMPASSIONATELY EXCITED ABOUT SHARING THE GOSPEL.

Choosea FacultySouthern’s faculty is world-renowned and readily accessible.

One of Southern Seminary’s distinguishing features is its faculty, whose contributions both in scholarship and teaching place Southern at the forefront of theo-logical education. The faculty’s academic achievement is matched by a willingness to invest in students, ensuring that an indelible mark is left on their entire lives. Among all the considerations when choosing a path for ministry training, one stands above the rest: Choose a faculty.

“What sets Southern apart is the faculty’s commitment to the revealed truth of Scrip-ture. Not only are they committed to biblical truth in the classroom and the public square, but also, and most importantly, in their own personal lives. They are some of the godliest people I have ever met.”

The School of Theology trains preachers, teachers, pastors, counselors, theologians, and apologists — all for the purpose of building the kingdom of God to the glory of Jesus Christ.

THE SCHOOL OF THEOLOGY has as its central focus the glory of God and the prepara-tion of his servants. To that end, this school offers a variety of degree programs designed to prepare students for a life of faithful gospel ministry. As a student, you will be equipped to speak and minister with biblical and theological clarity in the church, the academy, and the world at large.

It’s the primary means I think God uses not only to con-vert people but then transform them into Christlikeness. I want to tell my students that there are things you’re going to learn about God in greater measure, maybe not new knowledge, but you’re going to learn those things in a deeper way when you’re having to depend on him through suffering.”

Jason Meyer was drawn to Southern Seminary because of its commitment to “the importance of the local church and how they put that emphasis into practice through local church involvement.” Meyer embodies that same commitment in his ministry as pastor of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis.

In 2012, the membership of Bethlehem Baptist Church over-whelmingly voted to accept Jason Meyer as its pastor of preaching and vision, succeeding John Piper in that role.

With humble confidence in God’s Word, counselors can minister to God’s people and the complexity of their problems. Southern’s programs are designed to equip students to approach people skillfully and knowledge-ably, fully assured of the redemptive power of the gospel.

Living coram Deo, or before the face of God, is the goal of Lily Park’s teaching. Park, who will graduate from Southern Seminary with a Ph.D. in Student Ministry in fall 2015, hopes to train students to counsel hurting people and glorify God in the process. Biblical counseling offers her and others the answers to life’s struggles, and offers hope in the dark places. “In contrast to hundreds of man-made theories, biblical counseling reminds people that only God truly understands human nature and life without the centrality of God is ultimately empty,” Park said. She hopes her students learn how to view the world from God’s vantage point, looking at human nature, its problems, and solutions from Scripture. “Scripture is sufficient to address the deepest issues of human nature, which are spiritual,” she said. “Training in biblical counseling equips people with necessary knowledge and skills, but our confidence always rests in God to change and help people.”

Scroggins developed the 3 Circles evangelism tool for the North American Mission Board, which he used to train and mobilize his congregation for personal evangelism in a post-Christian environ-ment. The 3 Circles tool can be presented on paper, smartphone app, or bracelet to communicate God’s design, brokenness, and the gospel. He previously served as the dean of Boyce College, the undergraduate school of Southern Seminary; teaching pastor and youth pastor for Highview Baptist Church in Louisville, Kentucky. “My experience with the Billy Graham School remains invaluable for the ministry God has given me. The relationships that were established, the books that I read, and the papers that I wrote accelerated my thinking about Great Commission work and taught me to view church planting and gospel preaching as integral to local church leadership. My favorite aspect of the BGS was the real-world experiences and life-on-life investment that our faculty poured into my life. Their mentorship helped me to understand that aggressive, innovative missiological methods must grow out of strong biblical theology and be propelled by the ancient story of redemption.”

Matt Boswell chose to study at Southern Seminary because of the “doctrinal distinctives that are both professed and taught” in the classroom and around campus. Before he came to Lou-isville, Boswell was reading and learning from professors from afar, so he eagerly enrolled to study with them in person. His time at seminary helped to form his spiritual life, which he says is invaluable. “Through the scope of my classes, and the breadth of reading, I was challenged to think through many areas of doctrine, ministry, and the Christian life. As a local church worship pastor, this training was helpful immedi-ately and has continued to prove fruitful.” Boswell’s education helped him prepare for his current ministry position at Providence Church in Frisco, Texas. He hopes he leads people well to the glory of God as he “preaches through song.” “As I work to preach through song, I want to communicate the glory of God and call people to think rightly, feel deeply, and respond wholly to the holiness of God.”

Timothy Paul Jones has been widely recog-nized as a leading writer and researcher in the fields of apologetics, Christian education, and family ministry. Christian Retailing Magazine awarded Jones top honors in 2010 in the Chris-tian education category for his book Christian History Made Easy. Charles Colson listed him as one of “four names you need to know” when responding to the new atheists. Jones has also received the Scholastic Recognition Award from the North American Professors of Christian Education for his research in faith development.

Despite his strong academic pedigree, Jones has a unique ability to communicate in an appealing, accessible style that has made

him popular beyond academic circles. He has authored or contributed to more than a dozen books, including PROOF: Finding Freedom through the Intoxicating Joy of Irresistible Grace, Misquoting Truth, The Family Ministry Field Guide, and the CBA bestseller The Da Vinci Co-debreaker. Widely sought as a commentator on theological topics, Jones has been interviewed on numerous radio and television programs, including WGN Morning News, Fox & Friends, Crosstalk America and Bible Answer Man.

At Southern, Jones serves as C. Edwin Gheens Professor of Leadership and Church Ministry and associate vice president for online education.

“If you take everything regarding the topics of church and family out of the Bible, you would have a very short book. Southern Seminary provided the environment for me to learn God’s design for these two institutions and their connec-tion in God’s great redemptive plan.”

“The focus on equipping and serving the church drew me to Boyce, but the com-munity was my favorite part — not just with peers, but also professors who are interested in our lives, having us in their homes and pouring into us spiritually.”

Boyce CollegeBoyce College, the undergraduate school of Southern Seminary, boasts a faculty of biblical and theological scholars, all of whom are devoted to equipping students to serve the church and engage the cul-ture in a variety of ways. Undergraduate education is about more than merely obtaining a degree, though. It’s about building a foundation for your future. And, through a vibrant student life culture, local church partnerships, and academic programs, there’s no better place to build your foundation than Boyce College.

“Just because you’re retired, doesn’t mean God can’t use you in ministry,” said Lane, a retired judge who has now been ordained as a minister and works primarily in hospital visitation as he completes his M.Div. His wife, Sandy, said their practical life experience in ministry alongside their academic studies has helped dramatically.
