John Flanery is the Director of Choral Activities at New Mexico State University. At NMSU, he supervises the masters in choral conducting program, teaches choral literature and conducting, and oversees the University Singers, Women’s Chorale, The Statesmen and the Masterworks Chorus. Since his arrival at NMSU in 2015, the choirs have performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City as well as perform in Vienna and Salzburg including giving the Viennese premiere of James Mulholland’s Missa Romantica with Viennese orchestra. The choir numbers have dramatically increased and the choral program is on the rise. The choirs have begun a relationship with the Universidad Autónoma de Ciudad Juárez in neighboring Juárez, Mexico. The choirs have collaborated on concerts and projects five times in the last year and a half, encouraging an international friendship with universities separated by less than 60 miles. John has served ACDA in various positions including recently been elected as President-elect for New Mexico ACDA. He served as the Mississippi president from 2011-2014. For national ACDA, John has been on the poster selection committee for both the conferences in Dallas (2013) and Salt Lake City (2015). As a founder of new events, John began an ACDA summer conference in Mississippi in 2013. He began a summer camp at Southern Miss that he oversaw for seven years and had over 1,000 students and teachers attend. John began the Festival of Choirs on the Mississippi Gulf Coast in 2007 to encouraging choral singing in an area hit hard by hurricane Katrina. Additionally at Southern Miss he began the Spirit of Southern men’s a cappella group which became a recruiting tool and ambassadors for the choral department. The ensemble was selected to perform at the Mississippi ACDA/MMEA conference in 2011 and 2015. CLIN

STUDENT SELECTION PROCESS Each high school is invited to bring two or three balanced SATB quartets to participate in the honor choir. Community colleges are invited to bring three or four balanced SATB quartets for the community college honor choir. Students must be excellent sight-readers, have good vocal technique, and display exemplary rehearsal behavior. If possible, priority should be given to students who will continue to sing in college. Please limit selection to those students who read music well and work hard in rehearsal.
If you have a need to bring a group that is not balanced with voice parts, permission must be sought from Dr. Fuller ([email protected]).
SCHOLARSHIP AUDITION At SICC, students have the opportunity to earn choral scholarships to The University of Southern Mississippi for the 2017-18 academic year. Auditions are open to all high school seniors and community college students who attend SICC. Students planning to be music majors should prepare two songs—one of a fine art (or “classical”) nature and one from any style. Those planning on being music minors or who plan on not majoring in music at all should prepare one piece of a fine art (or “classical”) nature. An accompanist will be provided.
FAQ STUDENT ATTIRE School-appropriate clothing should be worn for all rehearsals, and the SICC T-shirt and jeans or khakis should be worn for the concert (no shorts for performance).
REHEARSALS To help us make SICC a successful conference, we ask that any deviation from the schedule be cleared with Dr. Fuller. It is important that all conference attendees help our productivity by being present and keeping distractions at a minimum. Please consult with us before allowing any student to arrive late or depart early from any rehearsal or event. PARKING PASSES Parking passes will be available prior to SICC on the Web at www.usm.edu/choirs.
CEUs CEUs are not included in the teacher registration fee but are available at an additional cost. Teachers must attend all CEU sessions in order to receive their credits.
